Abstract:Stretchable electronics are of huge interest as they can be useful in various irregular non-planar or deformable surfaces including human bodies. High density multi-functional stretchable electronics are beneficial as they can be reliably used in more compact regions. However, simply stacking multiple layers may increase induced strain, reducing degree of stretchability. Here, we present the design approach for the stretchable multilayer electronics that provide a similar degree of stretchability compare to a single layer electronics although the multilayer electronics are in much more compact form. We provide experimental and computational analyses for the benefits of the approach along with demonstrations with compact form of the multi-functional stretchable implantable bio-electronics and of the stretchable multilayer passive matrix LEDs array. The results presented here should be useful for a wide range of applications that require stretchable high-density electronics.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to address the problem of achieving high integration and miniaturization of multilayer flexible electronic devices while maintaining high stretchability. Specifically, traditional multilayer flexible electronic devices increase internal strain when stacking multiple layers, thereby reducing overall stretchability. This paper proposes a new design method that vertically separates the interconnects in the multilayer structure, allowing multilayer flexible electronic devices to achieve a more compact form while maintaining stretchability similar to single-layer devices. ### Main Issues: 1. **Integration and Miniaturization of Multilayer Flexible Electronic Devices**: How to make multilayer flexible electronic devices more compact while maintaining high-density multifunctionality. 2. **Impact of Multilayer Stacking on Stretchability**: How to reduce the internal strain caused by multilayer stacking to maintain high stretchability of the device. ### Solutions: 1. **Vertical Separation of Multilayer Structure (VSMSC)**: By separating the interconnects in the vertical direction, the mutual constraints between layers are reduced, thereby lowering internal strain. 2. **Experimental and Computational Analysis**: The effectiveness of this design was verified through experiments and finite element method (FEM) analysis, demonstrating its performance under mechanical deformations such as bending and stretching. ### Application Examples: 1. **Implantable Bioelectronic Devices**: A four-layer implantable bioelectronic device based on VSMSC was designed for electrocardiogram signal acquisition and cardiac stimulation, showcasing its application potential in the biomedical field. 2. **Stretchable Passive Matrix LED Array**: A dual-layer VSMSC passive matrix LED array was designed, demonstrating its application potential in display technology. ### Conclusion: The design method proposed in this paper not only achieves high integration and miniaturization of multilayer flexible electronic devices while maintaining high stretchability but also provides an effective solution for future complex circuit designs.
