Abstract:To get rid of the conventional toxic depressants, such as NaHS and Na2S, that are currently widely used in Cu-Mo flotation separation practice, a novel ozone nanobubbles preconditioning (ONP) strategy was introduced in this study. Single minerals flotation showed that copper flotation was depressed after ONP, whereas the likewise treated molybdenite maintained its good floatability with the aid of kerosene. Mixed minerals flotation showed that a concentrate containing 53.4 % Mo with 88 % recovery and a separation window of 78 % were obtained after 10 min ONP of bulk Cu-Mo concentrates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) together with surface xanthate amount determination, infrared spectroscopy and surface wettability characterization were employed to understand the underpinning mechanism. It appears that in addition to the formation of hydrophilic oxidation products as well as the removal and destroy of xanthate on chalcopyrite surface, the rapid and complete decomposition of xanthates in flotation pulp solutions by ONP may also contribute to the depressed copper flotation after ONP. It is interesting that the unfavorable cleaning effect of ONP on the floatability of molybdenite was compensated by a further addition of kerosene.

Abstract:In order to promote current efficiency and decrease energy consumption in electro-oxidation process for molybdenite concentrate, ultrasonic wave was introduced to intensify the leaching process. Under the ultrasonic field leaching conditions can be ameliorated, surface superstralum of electrodes can be sharply reduced, and electrolytic current be increased remarkably. The results indicate suitable leaching conditions as follows: ultrasonification is eradiated 3 min per 15 min, cell potential is about 3.5 V, ratio of ore pulp liquid to solid (L/S) 10, anode current density 700 A/m2, original pH of pulp value 10, electrode spacing 13 mm. Under these conditions the current efficiency is above 100%.
Extraction of Molybdenum from Low-Grade Molybdenum Concentrates

Abstract:Using roasting,ammonia leaching and alkaline leaching,the extraction of molybdenum from low-grade molybdenum concentrates was studied.The experimental results showed that the addition of the sodium carbonate increases the leaching rate of molybdenum by accelerating the decomposition of calcium molybdate.The optimum conditions for the molybdenum extraction are as follows: the roasting temperature is 600 ℃,the roasting time 2 h,the ammonia leaching temperature 80 ℃, the excess coefficient of aqueous ammonia 1.4,the dosage of the sodium carbonate 467 kg/t and the ratio of liquid to solid 4∶1.The leaching residue was treated by hydrochloric acid leaching(HCl) method and alkaline leaching(Na2CO3+NaOH) method separately to further leach molybdenum.The recovery rate of molybdenum in the residue is only 34.92% by the former method and,meanwhile,the leaching process by this method is difficult to control,showing that the method is not practicable.In the latter method,the dosages of the sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide are 533 and 433 kg/t,respectively.The scale-up experiment showed that the total recovery rate of molybdenum is up to 96.8%.

Abstract:This research investigates the hydrometallurgical processing of molybdenum middlings extracted from copper-molybdenum ore at the Shatyrkul-Zhaysan cluster in Kazakhstan. Molybdenum intermediate product obtained after selective flotation of the copper-molybdenum concentrate was used, with 0.07% yield, 22.23% molybdenum content, and 74.91% extraction. Mineralogical analysis shows molybdenite and chalcopyrite as the main minerals. Experiments study atmospheric leaching with nitric acid in single-stage and two-stage countercurrent modes to optimize molybdenum extraction and reduce acid consumption. The optimal conditions obtained were: 300 g/L nitric acid, 100 g/L sulfuric acid, 90?C temperature, and 2 hours leaching time in single stage leaching, giving 98.8% molybdenum extraction. Two-stage leaching under optimized conditions allows obtaining 94.3% molybdenum extraction in solutions with lower residual acidity (0.89 g-eq/L) and redox potential (550 mV) without reducing valuable component extractions. Molybdenum extraction reaches 94.3% in the subsequent solvent extraction stage from two-stage leaching solutions. The final product, calcium molybdate containing 46.83% molybdenum, meets commercial grade specifications. This research demonstrates an effective process for the hydrometallurgical production of commercial calcium molybdenite from copper-molybdenum ore, with high molybdenum recovery, reduced acid consumption through two-stage leaching, and minimal hazardous discharges.

Abstract:Mineral resources today are increasingly determined by the concept of "persistent". The reason for their difficult opening is in the composition of sulfide nature, leading to passivation of the surface and inhibition of hydrometallurgical processes. The way out in practice was found in oxidative firing and some other technologies. The work compares the results of leaching of molybdenite concentrate of Almalyk MMC JSC according to the schemes: the existing calcining-ammonia and non-calcining with nitric acid, hypochlorite opening and leaching. Non-calcining with hypochlorite opening and leaching scheme is not only ecologically cleaner in compare with pyro-metallurgy, but it relocates quantitatively to the solution not only molybdenum, rhenium, but gold and silver as well.

Abstract:Molybdenum is an important alloy element for metallurgical industry because of its high temperature stability. As the major mineral reserve for molybdenum, molybdenite (MoS2) is commonly found in porphyry copper deposits. Molybdenite is naturally floatable and can be separated from copper sulfide mineral using froth flotation. Properties of molybdenite such as mineralogy, microstructure, surface wettability, zeta potential, etc. can have a great effect on its floatability. Organic and inorganic depressants and surface pre-treatment methods are applied to improve the recovery of molybdenite. Electrochemical potential measurements using different electrodes are used to monitor process conditions and enable processing parameter adjustments to improve flotation circuit performance and reduce operating costs. Cations like Ca2+ and Mg2+ are reported to have negative effects on the flotation of molybdenite in alkaline solution, and dispersants and oil collectors need to be added to restore the flotation of molybdenite. In addition, effects of gangue minerals, particle size, and oil collectors and surfactants on molybdenite recovery are also discussed in this manuscript.

Abstract:The investigation on ore nature,flotation process,beneficiation equipment,industrial tests for Jinduicheng molybdenum ore provides a reliable basis for the new process design and industrial-scale production of 57% molybdenum concentrate.The molybdenum concentrate grading at 57% with recovery rate of not less than that by the original flotation process was successfully achieved in industrial production by adopting the concentration off-drugs,the grinding and scouring,and the flotation column concentration.This new process has been applied into two concentration systems of the dressing plant with an annual 9000 tons of production capacity and molybdenum concentrate grade of 57%.It can provide high-quality raw materials for high melting molybdenum oxide roasting process and acid-free low-temperature ammonia leaching process of ammonium molybdate,thus increasing the technological level of molybdenum industry.

Abstract:The invention discloses a method for directly recovering molybdenum from molybdenum oxide fine grained disseminated raw ore, comprising the following steps of: (1) grinding: weighing 20g of ore sample, grinding the molybdenum oxide raw ore to the monomer dissociation, and the particle size of the grinding product is 0.075 mm to be 80%; (2) leaching: using a mineral acid to leach the ground sample,the mineral acid concentration is 10-60%; the liquid-solid ratio is 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and the leaching temperature is 70-80 DEG C; the leaching time is 30-60min, mechanical stirring in a stirrer isperformed, the rotation speed is 300 r/min; (3) filtering; (4) adsorbing: the molybdenum filtrate obtained in the step 3 using an ion exchange resin to adsorb molybdenum; (5) rinsing; (6) desorbing:desorbing the resin rinsed in the step 5; (7) crystallizing: evaporating and cooling the desorption liquid of the step 6 to room temperature to obtain ammonium molybdate with a purity of 99%. The molybdenum is directly extracted from the molybdenum oxide raw ore to prepare the ammonium molybdate, therefore, the extraction process flow is reduced, and energy consumption is reduced; at the same time, the technological process of the method for directly recovering molybdenum from molybdenum oxide fine grained disseminated raw ore is simple, the beneficiation flow complexity is avoided, and operation is easy.

Abstract:The preparation process of sodium molybdate has the disadvantages of high energy consumption, low thermal efficiency, and high raw material requirement of molybdenum trioxide, in order to realize the green and efficient development of molybdenum concentrate resources, this paper proposes a new process for efficient recovery of molybdenum from molybdenum concentrate and preparation of sodium molybdate by microwave-enhanced roasting and alkali leaching. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the feasibility of oxidation roasting of molybdenum concentrate. The effects of roasting temperature, holding time, and power-to-mass ratio on the oxidation product and leaching product sodium molybdate (Na 2 MoO 4 ·2H 2 O) were investigated. Under the optimal process conditions: roasting temperature of 700°C, holding time of 110 min, and power-to-mass ratio of 110 W/g, the molybdenum state of existence was converted from MoS 2 to MoO 3 . The process of preparing sodium molybdate by alkali leaching of molybdenum calcine was investigated, the optimal leaching conditions include a solution concentration of 2.5 mol/L, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, a leaching temperature of 60°C, and leaching solution termination at pH 8. The optimum conditions result in a leaching rate of sodium molybdate of 96.24%. Meanwhile, the content of sodium molybdate reaches 94.08wt% after leaching and removing impurities. Iron and aluminum impurities can be effectively separated by adjusting the pH of the leaching solution with sodium carbonate solution. This research avoids the shortcomings of the traditional process and utilizes the advantages of microwave metallurgy to prepare high-quality sodium molybdate, which provides a new idea for the high-value utilization of molybdenum concentrate.

Abstract:This article investigated extraction process of molybdenum (VI) from acid leaching solution to explore the basic data for the recovery of Mo resources from spent hydroprocessing catalyst. The extractant 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) was adopted as the extractant, and the effects of specific operating parameters on Mo extraction and stripping were systematically investigated. The Mo extraction was greater than 99.5%, and the co-extraction of Al and Co were less than 0.2% under optimal conditions. The corresponding stripping processes were also performed focusing on reducing phase-separation time and preventing third-phase generation. Almost 100% (>99%) Mo was easily stripped using 0.9 mol/L NH3 center dot H2O with the addition of NH4NO3 ranging from 0.3 to 1.2 mol/L. Saturation extraction capacity method was applied to explore extraction mechanism. Abstract:Improvements of the direct electro-desulfurization of molybdenum disulfide in NaCl-KCl eutectic molten salt by employing a liquid zinc electrode was studied in this work. According to the previous studies, one of the rate controlling step of the MoS2 desulfurization process is the sulfur ions’ diffusion through solid MoS2 pellet, and a decreasing reaction rate is considered to result from the poor conductivity between the loosely connected partial reduced molybdenum particles. Based on these facts, liquid zinc electrode, along with a graphite crucible as the container, was employed to collect the reduced molybdenum particles as long as keep providing a fresh three-phase interline (3PI) as the current collector. Transient electrochemical technologies were introduced to study the electrochemical behavior of molybdenum ions with and without the appearance of zinc ions. Zn-Mo alloy was obtained through the potentiostatic electrolysis process, and molybdenum powders mainly sank into the bottom of liquid zinc due to the gravity. Metallic molybdenum shall be obtained by distilling the electrolysis product.

Abstract:A new hydrometallurgical process based on the methanesulfonic acid system was proposed to extract the bismuth efficiently from by-products of lead smelting. The bismuth extraction process includedelectrorefining, oxidation leaching, and electrodeposition. The optimum conditions of the bismuth extraction process were determined by a single-factor test. The bismuth plate with a purity of 99.8% was obtained under the optimum conditions. Cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry were applied to investigating the cathode reaction mechanism of electrorefining. The results show that lead deposition, bismuth deposition, and hydrogen evolution occur at the cathode, and the reactions of metals deposition are irreversible and diffusion-controlled. In addition, decreasing the temperature and acidity can improve the purity of the cathodic product (lead powder) in the electrorefining process.

Abstract:A brief review of bioleaching of molybdenum minerals was firstly put forward,and the factors reasonable for low molybdenum recovery in bioleaching were summarized.Secondly,key problems in bacterial leaching of molybdenum minerals were discussed,which included leaching feasibility of the molybdenite,bacteria involved in leaching,leaching mechanisms,the influence of Mo ions to microbial growth and inhibition of precipitation to mineral dissolution.Additionally,technologies for efficient bioleaching of molybdenite were proposed.The technologies contained bacterial genetic modification,multistage bioreactor leaching and redox potential adjustment in leaching systems.

Abstract:The presence of iron (Fe) and copper (Cu) negatively impacts molybdenum (Mo) recoveries in existing metallurgical processes. This study investigated the speciation of Mo in highly acidic solutions, exploring the removal of Fe and Cu from low-grade molybdenum calcine through acid washing. The species distribution diagram for the Mo-H2O system indicated that Mo predominantly existed as a monomeric and dimeric species at pH < 0. Acid washing experiment results indicated that 92% of Fe and 97% of Cu were removed, and the Mo loss rate remained < 4%. Furthermore, optimized conditions included 3 M H2SO4, 150 min, 90°C, and a liquid–solid ratio of 2:1. Characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy- energy dispersion spectrum (SEM-EDS) analysis of the acid washing residue indicated that Mo existed in the form of MoO3. Furthermore, solvent extraction successfully recovered over 97% of Mo from the acid washing solution. Recycling the raffinate into the acid washing process was found to reduce overall process costs. This study offered a practical and economical approach, optimizing the utilization of Mo resources by addressing challenges associated with Fe and Cu contents in existing processes.

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for selectively extracting and separating molybdenum in a spent catalyst leaching solution by utilizing a benzyl quaternary ammonium salt deep-eutectic solvent. The method comprises the following steps of: (1) synthesis of the benzyl quaternary ammonium salt deep-eutectic solvent: mixing a hydrogen bond donor and a hydrogen bond acceptor according to a molar ratioof (1-4): 1, stirring and mixing uniformly at 30-80 DEG C, wherein the stirring time is 10-60 minutes, and vacuumizing and drying a sample after reaction to obtain the deep-eutectic solvent; and (2)extraction and separation of molybdenum: fully mixing an extracted organic phase with the spent catalyst leaching solution to be treated for reaction, and performing phase-splitting reverse extractionafter reaction to obtain a molybdenum product. In the extraction and separation process, the extracted organic phase containing the deep-eutectic solvent is added into the molybdenum-containing acidic leaching solution, the two phases are fully mixed for reaction, and phase splitting is performed after reaction to obtain a loaded organic phase; and after phase-splitting reverse extraction, efficient separation of molybdenum and other metal ions is realized, so that the extraction selectivity and the purity of molybdenum are improved.

Colloids and Surfaces A Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects

Abstract:During froth flotation, the separation of chalcopyrite from molybdenite is hindered by their similar surface properties. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an efficient selective collector with innovative minerophilic groups and reduce the use of inhibitors. In this study, 5-methyl diethyl dithiocarbamate-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thione (MDCODT) was first introduced as a collector in chalcopyrite flotation separation from molybdenite. Micro-flotation experiment results expressed that the selectively separation of chalcopyrite from molybdenite could be realized without the addition of inhibitor. Wettability tests, ζ-potential analyses and UV spectrum demonstrated that MDCODT specifically adsorbed on the surface of chalcopyrite rather than molybdenite. And the adsorption mechanism was future explored by AFM scan, electrochemical tests, FTIR spectrum, XPS spectrum and DFT calculation. The active centers of MDCODT are concentrated in dithiocarbamate and oxadiazole thione groups, and MDCODT-Cu(I) complexes can be covered on the chalcopyrite surface with formation of Cu-S and Cu-N bonds. The di-minerophilic group oxadiazole-thione collector, MDCODT, exhibits the advantages of cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness, rendering it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.
