Abstract:The removal of impurities in molybdenum concentrate has become a new challenge for enterprises due to the cancellation of pickling. Whether impurity minerals can be converted into soluble ions during roasting is important for the impurity removal by current water washing. In this work, the interaction between various impurity elements in the treatment process of molybdenum concentrate was studied by process simulation experiments combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), ion chromatography (IC), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), the use of FactSage7.0 modeling and the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA). The results show that most of the impurity elements such as K, Si and Al exist in the form of alkaline minerals with large molecular weight. In the roasting process of molybdenum concentrate, K-containing minerals, such as muscovite and orthoclase, can be transformed into K+, Al3+ and other soluble ions, and then can be removed by water washing. Humidification increased the conversion degree of orthoclase to soluble ions, which was conducive to the removal of impurities by the washing process. The results of MLA microscopic analysis confirmed that impurities such as FeS2, CaSO4, SiO2, and especially FeS2, would form a high density mixture with MoO3 during the high temperature roasting process, and thus reduced the leaching rate of Mo. Therefore, the humidification and control of the molybdenum concentrate is an effective measure to remove impurities.

Abstract:Molybdenum is an important alloy element for metallurgical industry because of its high temperature stability. As the major mineral reserve for molybdenum, molybdenite (MoS2) is commonly found in porphyry copper deposits. Molybdenite is naturally floatable and can be separated from copper sulfide mineral using froth flotation. Properties of molybdenite such as mineralogy, microstructure, surface wettability, zeta potential, etc. can have a great effect on its floatability. Organic and inorganic depressants and surface pre-treatment methods are applied to improve the recovery of molybdenite. Electrochemical potential measurements using different electrodes are used to monitor process conditions and enable processing parameter adjustments to improve flotation circuit performance and reduce operating costs. Cations like Ca2+ and Mg2+ are reported to have negative effects on the flotation of molybdenite in alkaline solution, and dispersants and oil collectors need to be added to restore the flotation of molybdenite. In addition, effects of gangue minerals, particle size, and oil collectors and surfactants on molybdenite recovery are also discussed in this manuscript.

Abstract:The preparation process of sodium molybdate has the disadvantages of high energy consumption, low thermal efficiency, and high raw material requirement of molybdenum trioxide, in order to realize the green and efficient development of molybdenum concentrate resources, this paper proposes a new process for efficient recovery of molybdenum from molybdenum concentrate and preparation of sodium molybdate by microwave-enhanced roasting and alkali leaching. Thermodynamic analysis indicated the feasibility of oxidation roasting of molybdenum concentrate. The effects of roasting temperature, holding time, and power-to-mass ratio on the oxidation product and leaching product sodium molybdate (Na 2 MoO 4 ·2H 2 O) were investigated. Under the optimal process conditions: roasting temperature of 700°C, holding time of 110 min, and power-to-mass ratio of 110 W/g, the molybdenum state of existence was converted from MoS 2 to MoO 3 . The process of preparing sodium molybdate by alkali leaching of molybdenum calcine was investigated, the optimal leaching conditions include a solution concentration of 2.5 mol/L, a liquid-to-solid ratio of 2 mL/g, a leaching temperature of 60°C, and leaching solution termination at pH 8. The optimum conditions result in a leaching rate of sodium molybdate of 96.24%. Meanwhile, the content of sodium molybdate reaches 94.08wt% after leaching and removing impurities. Iron and aluminum impurities can be effectively separated by adjusting the pH of the leaching solution with sodium carbonate solution. This research avoids the shortcomings of the traditional process and utilizes the advantages of microwave metallurgy to prepare high-quality sodium molybdate, which provides a new idea for the high-value utilization of molybdenum concentrate.

Abstract:A method for separation of metal sulfides in molybdenum concentrate by vacuum distillation has been developed. The feasibility for separation was mainly dependent on the differences in saturated vapor pressure between impurity sulfides and molybdenum disulfide, which was determined by theoretical calculation. The main factors including distilling temperature and heating duration were studied by experiments. The volatiles enriched on the graphite condensation plates were also investigated by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction and according to that the volatilization behavior of impurities was analyzed. Multiple impurity sulfides could be removed through one-step vacuum distillation on the premise that MoS2 did not decompose. It's turned out that the contents of impurity elements were efficiently decreased by this method without breaking crystal and layered structure of MoS2.

Abstract:The synergetic utilization of ferruginous gibbsite ores (Al-Fe ores) and ferruginous manganese ores (Mn-Fe ores) by the carbothermic co-reduction roasting–magnetic separation process was proposed as an innovative and green process for the separation and recovery of the valuable metal elements of Mn, Fe and Al from these ores. In this paper, a ferromanganese crude alloy with 72.47% Fe and 10.19% Mn and a high recovery of 85.89% Fe was prepared, which produces an acceptable feed to produce manganese steels with an electric arc furnace. The synergistic co-reduction of the two kinds of complex and refractory minerals was favored to separate Fe, Mn and Al from these ores. The influence of the operating variables on the recovery and separation of valuable metals from Mn-Fe ores and Al-Fe ores is initially studied. Then, the stepwise reduction behaviors of a composite oxide Mn1-xFexO (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and hercynite (Mn1−yFeyAl2O4, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1) were investigated to clarify that Mn-Fe ores have a positive impact on the reduction of fayalite and hercynite in Al-Fe ores. This study reported a simple green route, the carbothermic co-reduction–magnetic separation process, to economically and effectively treat Al-Fe ores and Mn-Fe ores.

Abstract:Roasting experiments were carried out with pure reagents as raw materials. The self-sintering behaviors of molybdenite (MoS2) during oxidation were investigated by thermodynamic calculation, XRD, SEM-EDS and high-temperature in situ analysis. The results indicate that the desulfurization efficiency of MoS2 pellet decreases with the increase of roasting temperature from 600 to 700°C, owing to the expansion of sintered area. At the very beginning of roasting, sintered layer can be rapidly formed and cover the pellet surface on the windward side, and meanwhile, MoO2 and Mo4O11 intensively appear and constitute the sintered layer together with MoO3. Moreover, it is proven that MoO3-rich products containing low-valence molybdenum oxides have low melting points, thus easy to be melted during the occurrence of exothermic reaction between MoS2 and O2, which leads to the sintering of materials.

Abstract:Sintering is a common phenomenon, which often takes place during the oxidation roasting process of molybdenite concentrate in multiple-hearth furnaces. The occurrence of sintering phenomena has detrimental effects on the product quality and the service life of the furnace. In this work, the influence of two key factors (roasting temperature and K content) on the sintering behavior is investigated using molybdenite concentrate as the raw material. Different technologies such as XRD, FESEM-EDS, and phase diagrams are adopted to analyze the experimental data. The results show that the higher the roasting temperature is, the greater the mass loss and the more serious the sintering degree will be. The results also show that with the increase in K content, the mass loss of the raw material is first increased and then decreased, while its sintering degree is still gradually increased. The sintering products obtained during the oxidation roasting process are often tightly combined with the bottom of the used crucible with a smooth and dense surface structure, while their internal microstructures are very complicated, which not only includes numerous MoO3 species, but also unoxidized MoS2, Mo sub-oxide, SiO2, and a variety of molybdates. Among them, both MoO3 and molybdates can be easily dissolved into the ammonia solution, leading to a residue mainly composed of SiO2 and CaMoO4. This study also finds that the sintering phenomenon is caused by the increase in local temperature and the formation of various low-melting-point eutectics. It is suggested that decreasing the roasting temperature and K content, especially the K content, are effective methods for reducing the sintering degree of molybdenite concentrate during the oxidation roasting process.

Abstract:A low-cost and high-efficiency solid reaction method has been reported as an effective technology to synthesize manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 with a spinel crystal structure. This work clarified the underlying reason for the influence mechanism of SiO2 and Al2O3 on the synthesis of MnFe2O4. Synthetic MnFe2O4 polyhedral microparticles with a saturated magnetization of 71.19 emu/g, a ratio of saturation magnetization to residual magnetization (Ms/Mr) of 0.062 and a coercivity (Hc) of 6.50 Oe were successfully obtained at an oxidization roasting temperature of 1100 °C for 60 min. The experimental results indicate that the tetrahedral Mn2+ ions and octahedral Mn3+ ions in the crystal structure of manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 were replaced by tetrahedral Si2+ ions and octahedral Al3+ ions from (Mn2+)x(Fe2+)y(Si2+)1−x−y[Fe3+]2O4 and (Mn2+)[Fe3+]2−x[Al3+]xO4, respectively. In addition, hercynite FexMn1−xAl2O4 with a spinel crystal structure and olivine MnxFe2−xSiO4 with an orthorhombic crystal structure were partially formed in the synthesis of manganese ferrite MnFe2O4, in which some Fe2+ ions were easily replaced by Mn2+ ions to form stable hercynite MnAl2O4 and olivine Mn2SiO4 in these crystal structures. The current research work provides comprehensive insights for synthesizing manganese ferrite MnFe2O4 and continuously advances its technical progress.

Abstract:Owing to its complex characteristics, the large-scale utilization of ferromanganese ore is limited by the traditional processes. In this study, suspension magnetization roasting and magnetic separation technology was proposed, and the thermodynamics, phase and magnetic transformation, and microstructure evolution of the main minerals were systematically investigated during roasting. Results show that iron concentrate with iron grade of 68.31% at a recovery of 96.34% can be obtained in the magnetic separation concentrate, and manganese concentrate with manganese grade of 33.70% at a recovery of 86.83% can be obtained in magnetic separation tailings under optimum conditions. Pyrolusite and braunite were reduced to weak magnetic manganosite, and weak magnetic hematite was selectively transformed into strong magnetic magnetite. Many cracks appeared in the ores owing to the multiple reduction and dehydration reactions of ferromanganese ore, which was favorable for grinding and separation of manganese and iron.

Abstract:Roasting of metallic ore is an important process in the metal smelting industry, in which the ore undergoes intense chemical changes to purify the metallic components. Fluidized bed technology has the advantages of strengthening mass and heat transfer, enhancing the chemical reaction rate, and at the same time the temperature uniformity in the furnace, which often makes it the preferred choice in metallic ore roasting. The development of fluidized bed roasting technology in the roasting of different types of metal ores with the latest advances in reaction kinetics, flow and heat transfer characteristics, and process optimization are introduced by taking three typical applications of fluidized bed roasting of pyrite, hematite, and zinc sulfide concentrate as examples. The future development trend in the context of carbon neutrality is prospected. Fluidized bed roasting technology is anticipated to be applied to more types of metallic ores. Meanwhile, it could be rapidly developed in flow and particle size optimization, pollutant control, and energy utilization.
Magnetic Properties and Washability of Roasted Suspended Siderite Ores

Abstract:Steel is one of the most important industrial materials, which mainly comes from the smelting of iron ore. In view of the huge steel consumption every year, the exploitation of vast reserves of siderite ores is significant for improving the self-sufficiency rate of iron ore resources and ensuring the strategic security of the iron and steel industries. This paper investigated the influence of temperature, time, and other parameters on the magnetic properties of roasted siderite ores using the method of suspended roasting and analyzed the washability of roasted ores under weak-magnetic-field conditions using the magnetic separation tube experiment. The findings of the study explained the iron phase transformation process, i.e., FeCO3 was transformed into Fe3O4 by suspension magnetization roasting. Furthermore, the saturation magnetization of the roasted ore increased in due time at a constant temperature range of 550-750 °C and a roasting time of less than 5 s. It also increased with increasing temperature and constant time. The roasted ore achieved the best magnetic characteristics after roasting at 750 °C for 5 s. After low-intensity magnetic separation, the iron grade of the concentrate changed to 55.12%, with a recovery rate of 90.34%. The study results provide a reference for the development and application of siderite suspension magnetization roasting technology.

Abstract:The concentrated sulfuric acid roasting method and caustic soda method, as the main processes for treating Bayan Obo mixed rare earth concentrate, have been operating normally for decades. However, due to their serious pollution, high cost, and waste of accompanying resources, relevant rare earth enterprises are facing severe environmental and cost pressures. The sodium carbonate roasting method is a clean method for treating rare earth minerals, but due to the phenomenon of "ring formation" in the rotary kiln during the reaction process, this process has not been widely promoted. Based on the above facts, this article proposes a decomposition method for sodium pelletizing to decompose monazite, which effectively alleviates the related technical problems caused by the "ring formation" problem. Moreover, the rare earth leaching rate is 86.87%, and the recovery rates of F, P, and Th are 98.64, 13.87, and 88.96%. It is a potential rare earth mineral cleaning production process and can provide certain technical references for relevant rare earth enterprises.

Abstract:Due to the great affinity and the similarity of the physical performance of iron and molybdenum disulfide in the concentrate, it is difficult to affect the removal and separation of iron during the procession of molybdenum concentrate. The application of molybdenum disulfide two-dimensional layered materials is seriously restricted by the relatively high content of iron. Considering the direct purification of MoS2, vacuum chlorination roasting for decreasing iron of molybdenum concentrate is proposed. Thermodynamics of iron removal by vacuum chlorination roasting is analyzed. FeS can be chloridized into FeCl2, which volatilizes easily by solid chlorination agent in vacuum. The experimental results showed that the iron content decreased to 0.43% at 1223 K and P ∼1 Pa for 60 min, and the Fe content was reduced to 0.082% after acid washing, with a removal rate of 94.2%. which offers a novel way to replace the conventional method for elimination of iron sulfide in molybdenum ore. Possible separation mechanism of iron sulfide is also discussed in this work.

Abstract:A brief review of bioleaching of molybdenum minerals was firstly put forward,and the factors reasonable for low molybdenum recovery in bioleaching were summarized.Secondly,key problems in bacterial leaching of molybdenum minerals were discussed,which included leaching feasibility of the molybdenite,bacteria involved in leaching,leaching mechanisms,the influence of Mo ions to microbial growth and inhibition of precipitation to mineral dissolution.Additionally,technologies for efficient bioleaching of molybdenite were proposed.The technologies contained bacterial genetic modification,multistage bioreactor leaching and redox potential adjustment in leaching systems.

STUDY ON OXIDATION ALKALINE LEACHING BEHAVIOR OF MOLYBDENUM FROM Mo-BEARING BLACK SHALE

Abstract:Oxidation and dissolution of Mo-bearing minerals are key factors to enhance the Mo leaching rate from Mo-bearing black shale.The paper analyzes the theory of oxidative alkaline leaching of Mo-bearing black shale and draws molybdenum concentration-pH figure,based on which,several experiment are completed.The experimental results show that the leaching rate of molybdenum under the different pH of the leaching system of Mo-bearing black shale was consistent with the lgT-pH diagram under the condition of temperature 150℃,reacting time 3 hours,agitator rotating 500 r/min and oxygen pressure of 1.2MPa.

Abstract:(NH4)2SO4 roasting followed by water leaching to process nickel- chromium mixed metal oxidized (MO) ore was investigated. The optimal operating parameters were obtained after determining the influences of the molar ratio of (NH4)2SO4 to mixed oxidized ore, roasting temperature and roasting time on metal extractions. The extraction efficiencies of Ni, Fe, Mg, Al and Cr reached 94.02%, 87.87%, 84.14%, 74.00% and 41.49%, respectively. The transformation of mineral phases during roasting were identified by XRD analysis combining with TG-DTA curves and phases transformation analysis of analytic reagents with (NH4)2SO4. The phase transition process in experimental temperature range can be summarized as: MO to (NH4)2M(SO4)2 to MSO4 and M2O3 to (NH4)3M(SO4)3 to NH4M(SO4)2 to M2(SO4)3 (M is divalent and trivalent metallic element). The work demonstrates an effective process to treat nickel-chromium mixed metal oxidized ores. The reaction mechanism of Fe meets the chemical reaction control mechanism, while the reaction mechanism of Ni, Mg and Al follows the mixed control mechanism of the chemical reaction and diffusion controls.
