Abstract:The removal of impurities in molybdenum concentrate has become a new challenge for enterprises due to the cancellation of pickling. Whether impurity minerals can be converted into soluble ions during roasting is important for the impurity removal by current water washing. In this work, the interaction between various impurity elements in the treatment process of molybdenum concentrate was studied by process simulation experiments combined with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), ion chromatography (IC), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS), the use of FactSage7.0 modeling and the mineral liberation analyzer (MLA). The results show that most of the impurity elements such as K, Si and Al exist in the form of alkaline minerals with large molecular weight. In the roasting process of molybdenum concentrate, K-containing minerals, such as muscovite and orthoclase, can be transformed into K+, Al3+ and other soluble ions, and then can be removed by water washing. Humidification increased the conversion degree of orthoclase to soluble ions, which was conducive to the removal of impurities by the washing process. The results of MLA microscopic analysis confirmed that impurities such as FeS2, CaSO4, SiO2, and especially FeS2, would form a high density mixture with MoO3 during the high temperature roasting process, and thus reduced the leaching rate of Mo. Therefore, the humidification and control of the molybdenum concentrate is an effective measure to remove impurities.

Abstract:Molybdenum is the essential micro element for plants and animals, but it can produce bad effects when excess intake.It has caused molybdenum pollution in China.The main treatment technologies for molybdenumcontaining wastewater treatment, such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange resin, adsorption, membrane separation and biological methods were reviewed on removal effects, influence factors and mechanisms.Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the above technologies were summaried, and the development direction was prospected, so as to supply reference for molybdenum-containing wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Iron and manganese are considered to be strategic national mineral resources. Ferromanganese ore, which is characterised by low-grade, fine particle size, and complex associated relationships, represents the primary source of manganese resources. Given the urgent demand for ferromanganese resources in China, it is of significant importance to carry out basic research and cutting-edge technology exploration around co-associated ferromanganese ores in order to realize the efficient separation and utilization of these resources, with the aim of reducing the country’s dependence on imports. This study reports on the physicochemical properties of ferromanganese ore and conventional separation methods, including mechanical beneficiation, leaching technology, roasting technology, and pyrometallurgical smelting. This paper presents a review of the various technical principles, parameter optimization and mechanism characteristics associated with the extraction and separation of iron and manganese from ferromanganese. This review offers guidance for the selection and development of ferromanganese or other complex refractory iron and manganese ore resources. In light of the aforementioned considerations, a novel approach to the treatment of ferromanganese via microwave fluidization roasting is proposed in the paper.

Abstract:The vast seabed holds tremendous resource potential that can provide necessary materials for future human societal development. This study focuses on the mineralogy of seafloor manganese nodules off the coast of China in the Western Pacific and the primary techniques for extracting valuable metal elements from manganese nodules. The research indicates that the main valuable metal elements in the manganese nodules from this region include Cu, Co, Ni, Mn, Fe, etc. The key to extracting these valuable metals lies in reducing Mn(IV) to Mn(II) to disrupt the structure of the nodules, thereby releasing the valuable elements. The extraction processes for the main valuable metal elements of manganese nodules are mainly divided into two categories: pyrometallurgical–hydrometallurgical and solely hydrometallurgical. In order to cope with the challenges of environmental change and improve utilization efficiency, bioleaching, hydrogen metallurgy, and co-extraction are gaining increasing attention. For promoting commercialization, the future development of manganese nodule resources can refer to the technical route of efficient short-process extraction technology, the comprehensive recovery of associated resources, and tail-free utilization.

Abstract:Strategical elements, such as rare earth elements, play a crucial role in the industry, especially in producing high-tech materials. Major global industries have developed a strong dependence on rare earth materials. Every year, there are innovations in industries such as modern technology, green energy, or communications technology, which need more strategic metals to improve investment profitability. This article reviews advances in rare earth separation methods and techniques to guide and recommend the best extractants, depending on leaching conditions and the final target product. Each method for separating and extracting agents is individually revised in terms of the mechanism and interaction of providing rare earth elements. This paper also evaluates past and current trends in these methods and technical extractants and identifies their strengths and weaknesses.Graphical abstractThis review summarized the research progress of methods applied by industries to extract rare earth elements used in up-to-date advanced technology. The research shows a broad and deep understanding of REE and provides further information on the scientific aspect. Four significant methods of REE are distinguished and were profoundly described. Abstract:The investigation on ore nature,flotation process,beneficiation equipment,industrial tests for Jinduicheng molybdenum ore provides a reliable basis for the new process design and industrial-scale production of 57% molybdenum concentrate.The molybdenum concentrate grading at 57% with recovery rate of not less than that by the original flotation process was successfully achieved in industrial production by adopting the concentration off-drugs,the grinding and scouring,and the flotation column concentration.This new process has been applied into two concentration systems of the dressing plant with an annual 9000 tons of production capacity and molybdenum concentrate grade of 57%.It can provide high-quality raw materials for high melting molybdenum oxide roasting process and acid-free low-temperature ammonia leaching process of ammonium molybdate,thus increasing the technological level of molybdenum industry.

Abstract:The synergetic utilization of ferruginous gibbsite ores (Al-Fe ores) and ferruginous manganese ores (Mn-Fe ores) by the carbothermic co-reduction roasting–magnetic separation process was proposed as an innovative and green process for the separation and recovery of the valuable metal elements of Mn, Fe and Al from these ores. In this paper, a ferromanganese crude alloy with 72.47% Fe and 10.19% Mn and a high recovery of 85.89% Fe was prepared, which produces an acceptable feed to produce manganese steels with an electric arc furnace. The synergistic co-reduction of the two kinds of complex and refractory minerals was favored to separate Fe, Mn and Al from these ores. The influence of the operating variables on the recovery and separation of valuable metals from Mn-Fe ores and Al-Fe ores is initially studied. Then, the stepwise reduction behaviors of a composite oxide Mn1-xFexO (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and hercynite (Mn1−yFeyAl2O4, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1) were investigated to clarify that Mn-Fe ores have a positive impact on the reduction of fayalite and hercynite in Al-Fe ores. This study reported a simple green route, the carbothermic co-reduction–magnetic separation process, to economically and effectively treat Al-Fe ores and Mn-Fe ores.

Abstract:Silver-bearing manganese ore (Mn-Ag ore) is an important resource for the extraction of the precious metal Ag. However, the efficient and economical utilization of low-grade Mn-Ag ore poses challenges due to its polymetallic co-occurrence, complex associated mineral structures, and lower Ag grade compared to an industrial Ag grade of 80 g/t. In contrast, the Ag grade of commercially viable concentrate, achieved through physicochemical beneficiation, generally exceeds 1000 g/t. This work briefly discusses the metallogeny and resource characteristics and the processing technologies of Mn-Ag ore to produce high grade Ag concentrates. Based on the metallogeny characteristics of Mn-Ag deposits, this work delves into the challenges and difficulties in the physical separation of Ag and Mn. By regulating the differences in the chemical properties of Mn and Ag constituents, chemical beneficiation processes, including unit operations of pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, result in favorable Ag and Mn enrichment and separation. The chemical principles, technical parameters, Mn-Ag separation efficiency, and advantages and disadvantages of chemical beneficiation (blast furnace smelting, chlorination roasting, one-step leaching, and two-step leaching) were systematically summarized and discussed. This work can provide theoretical and technical guidance for the effective treatment of low-grade Mn-Ag ores.

Abstract:Molybdenum is an important alloy element for metallurgical industry because of its high temperature stability. As the major mineral reserve for molybdenum, molybdenite (MoS2) is commonly found in porphyry copper deposits. Molybdenite is naturally floatable and can be separated from copper sulfide mineral using froth flotation. Properties of molybdenite such as mineralogy, microstructure, surface wettability, zeta potential, etc. can have a great effect on its floatability. Organic and inorganic depressants and surface pre-treatment methods are applied to improve the recovery of molybdenite. Electrochemical potential measurements using different electrodes are used to monitor process conditions and enable processing parameter adjustments to improve flotation circuit performance and reduce operating costs. Cations like Ca2+ and Mg2+ are reported to have negative effects on the flotation of molybdenite in alkaline solution, and dispersants and oil collectors need to be added to restore the flotation of molybdenite. In addition, effects of gangue minerals, particle size, and oil collectors and surfactants on molybdenite recovery are also discussed in this manuscript.
Clean separation and purification for strategic metals of molybdenum and rhenium from minerals and waste alloy scraps–A review

Abstract:Molybdenum (Mo) and rhenium (Re) are strategic key metals for the development of modernization. In nature, 99 wt.% of Re is associated with molybdenite minerals via the form of isomorphism, and the element abundance of Mo (about 1.1–1.5 ppm) and Re (about 0.0004–0.0026 ppm) is tremendous in the continental crust. These congenital characteristics make it difficult to separate Mo and Re. In this work, the Mo and Re resource features and products consumption are briefly summarized, and the pre-separation of Mo and Re from minerals or secondary alloy scraps, and the deep separation of the dissolved Mo and Re from solutions are systematically reviewed. Pyrometallurgy approaches are suitable for the treatment of high-grade Mo concentrates, however it lacks vast energy consumption and SO2 emission. Hydrometallurgical process is appropriate to deal with low-grade Mo concentrates, but leaching efficiency of Mo is low and numerous expensive oxidants are consumed. As for deep separation of Mo and Re from the solutions, selective chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and solvent extraction are commonly used in industry to separate Mo and Re. Due to separation efficiency, Mo and Re mixture solutions with low concentrations generally lower than 0.5 g/L are concomitantly generated after ion exchange and solvent extraction. Selective adsorption is a prospective method to separate Mo and Re from ultra-low concentration solutions, while the existing preparation technologies of high-selectivity adsorbents are characterized as complex and expensive. Developing facile and low-cost preparation of adsorbents is a promising research orientation for clean and deep separation of Mo and Re from solutions.

Abstract:The demand for rare earth elements (REE) is increasing rapidly owing to the emergence of new clean-energy and defense-related technologies. China's dominates the world production of REE. In this paper, we review the ore characteristics of four typical REE deposits in China and discuss the conventional beneficiation techniques, including gravity and magnetic separation, flotation, and hydrometallurgical processing of these ores. Some of the latest laboratory findings and industrial applications, as well as the development of novel reagents for REE processing in China are presented. The REE beneficiation technologies developed and employed in China could constitute a good case study for many other emerging projects being explored around the world.

Abstract:Magnetic separation technology is a physical separation method that uses the differences in magnetism between matter to separate them from each other by different motion behaviors in a non-uniform magnetic field. It is highly efficient, green, and environmentally friendly, with little change in the physical and chemical properties of raw materials. Magnetic separation technology is commonly used in the field of mineral processing engineering for magnetite, hematite, titanite, and other magnetic ferrous metal oxide minerals. This paper summarizes the application of magnetic separation technology for resource utilization and environmental treatment in different fields, such as non-metal decomposition, valuable metal recovery, use of magnetic carrier chemical separation, biomedical targeted magnetic separation, and use of magnetic species separation in water and wastewater treatment. We seek to review the application and potential of magnetic separation technology in various fields, emphasize their key role, and explore possible directions for their future development.

Abstract:Exploitation and utilization of mineral resources have played a vital role in China's rapid economic developments. Although the history of mineral processing is quite long, technologies in this field have varied with the changes of market demands. This is particularly the case for minerals whose high-grade deposits are depleting. The aim of this review is to present our recent efforts on developing new routes for the utilization of low-grade minerals, such as iron ores and brine-containing lithium. The emphasis on the two minerals lies in the fact that iron plays a vital role in modern-day civilization and lithium is a key component in electric vehicles for transportation. Furthermore, the utilization of magnesium chloride reserves, one of the largest wastes in western China, as raw materials for fabrication of functional materials is also included in this review.

Abstract:Rare earths are significant for new material developments. China has the largest proved reserve of rare earths, and developed leading theories and technologies of rare earth extraction separation in the world. To adapt to the new requirements of environment protect and intelligent manufacturing in the last two decades, rare earth separation technologies behave the development trends of continuous chromatography, higher product purity, automatic control and process coupling. A flow-sheet with hyperlink extraction technology presents the separation efficiency as continuous ion exchange chromatography. Improvements on cause-effect analysis and control technologies of cross contamination during the process deepened the purification limitation by extraction separation. Automatically controlled production based on a special simulation expert system for flow-sheet optimization design will provide effective guarantee for the quality and stability of rare earth products. The coupling of extraction separation with other processes has proved to be a new idea to further improve green manufacturing level of rare earth separation. Herein, in combination with our recent studies, we have introduced the trends and progress of the theory of countercurrent extraction and rare earth separation technology.
Characterization and utilization potential of typical molybdenum tailings in Shaanxi Province, China

Abstract:Shaanxi Province is located in the most important molybdenum ore district in the world, but a lot of molybdenum tailings have been released, polluting the environment and wasting resources seriously. Taking eleven tailing samples collected at the main molybdenum tailings ponds in Shaanxi Province as the research object, the physical, chemical, and mineralogical characteristics were studied through scanning electron microscope, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, and others. The ecological risk and utilization potential of molybdenum tailings were investigated through leaching test, geo-accumulation index, potential ecological risk assessment, and other methods. The results demonstrated that the main chemical and mineralogical composition of various molybdenum tailings in Shaanxi Province is similar, and the predominant mineral composition is muscovite, quartz, microcline, and calcite. The potential ecological risk of heavy metals in six molybdenum tailings is high, while Pb and Cd are the main pollution risk elements. Molybdenum tailings contain considerable amounts of critical minerals with huge potential economic value, and molybdenum tailings with high environmental hazards could be converted into a possible source for critical minerals by recovering the critical minerals and repurposing the secondary tailings as an additive or cement substitute. This study provides an innovative idea for the pollution treatment of molybdenum tailings and indicates the prospect of molybdenum tailings as a secondary source for critical minerals.
