Abstract:In this paper, we compute the unit groups and the $2$-class numbers of the Fröhlich's triquadratic fields $\KK=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{p},\sqrt{q})$, where $p$ and $q$ are two prime numbers such that ($p\equiv 1 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$) or ($p\equiv 5$ or $3 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$). Furthermore, we determine some families of the fields $\KK$ whose $2$-class groups are trivial or cyclic non trivial, and some other families with $2$-class groups isomorphic to the Klein group.

It is of interest to characterize the structure of [math] groups for [math]. The [math] groups for [math] have been investigated by several authors. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of [math] 2-groups by showing there are five classes of such groups which are nontrivial and nonabelian.

Abstract:Let p be a prime and F be a finite field of characteristic p . Suppose that FG is the group algebra of the finite p -group G over the field F . Let V ( FG ) denote the group of normalized units in FG and let V * ( FG ) denote the unitary subgroup of V ( FG ). If p is odd, then the order of V * ( FG ) is ∣ F ∣ (∣ G ∣−1)/2 . However, the case p = 2 still is open. In this paper, the order of V * ( FG ) is computed when G is a nonabelian 2-group given by a central extension of the form and G ′ ≅ Z 2 , n, m ⩾ 1. Furthermore, a conjecture is confirmed, i.e., the order of V * ( FG ) can be divisible by , where Ω 1 ( G ) = { g ∈ G ∣ g 2 = 1}.

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and $F$ be a finite field of characteristic $p$. Suppose that $FG$ is the group algebra of the finite $p$-group $G$ over the field $F$. Let $V(FG)$ denote the group of normalized units in $FG$ and let $V_*(FG)$ denote the unitary subgroup of $V(FG)$. If $p$ is odd, then the order of $V_*(FG)$ is $|F|^{(|G|-1)/2}$. However, the case when $p=2$ still is open. In this paper, the order of $V_*(FG)$ is computed when $G$ is a nonabelian $2$-group given by a central extension of the form $$1\longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{2^n}\times \mathbb{Z}_{2^m} \longrightarrow G \longrightarrow \mathbb{Z}_2\times \cdots\times \mathbb{Z}_2 \longrightarrow 1$$ and $G'\cong \mathbb{Z}_2$, $n, m\geq 1$. Further, a conjecture is confirmed, namely, the order of $V_*(FG)$ can be divisible by $|F|^{\frac{1}{2}(|G|+|\Omega_1(G)|)-1}$, where $\Omega_1(G)=\{g\in G\ |\ g^2=1\}$.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the units of integral group rings of cyclic $2$-groups of small orders, namely, the orders of $2^n$ for $n<8$. Immediately we should note the issues our consideration describe in the introduction in more detail. Here we will indicate the main directions of our research. Previously, we proved that the normalized group of units of an integral group ring of a cyclic 2-group of order $2^n$ contains a subgroup of finite index, which is the direct product of the subgroup of units defined by the character with the largest character field and the subgroup of units that is isomorphic to the subgroup of units of the integer group ring of the cyclic $2$-group of order $2^{n-1}$. Because of this, it is very important to study the structure of the subgroup of units defined by the character with the largest field of characters, which is the cyclotomic field $Q_{2^n}$ obtained by adjoining a primitive $2^n$th root of unity to $Q$, the field of rational number. That subgroup of units of an integral group ring of a cyclic $2$-group is isomorphic to the subgroup of the group of units of the integer ring of the specified cyclotomic field. Therefore, the research of units of an integer group ring of a cyclic $2$-group is reduced to study the properties of the group of units of the integer ring of the cyclotomic field $Q_{2^n}$. Thus, we will study of groups of circular units of integer rings of cyclotomic fields $Q_{2^n}$ in large part.

Abstract:For any positive integer $n$, we show that there exists a real number field $k$ (resp. $k'$) of degree $2^n$ whose $2$-class group is isomorphic $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ such that the Galois group of the maximal unramified extension of $k$ (resp. $k'$) over $k$ (resp. $k'$) is abelian (resp. non abelian, more precisely isomorphic to $Q_8$ or $D_8$, the quaternion and the dihedral group of order $8$ respectively). In fact, we construct the first examples in literature of families of real biquadratic fields whose unramified abelian Iwasawa module is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and so that satisfying the Greenberg conjecture.

Abstract:Astonishing new discoveries with quartets and octets of cyclic cubic fields sharing a common conductor are presented. Four kinds of graphs describing cubic residue conditions among the prime divisors of the conductor enforce elementary bi- or tricyclic 3-class groups and either a metabelian 3-class field tower group of coclass at least two or a closed Andozhskii-Tsvetkov group of order 6561. In the latter situation, abelian type invariants of first and second order are required for the identification.

Abstract:In this paper, using the theory of double coverings of cyclotomic fields, we give a formula for [Formula: see text], where K = ℚ(ζn), G = Gal (K/ℚ), 𝔽2 = ℤ/2ℤ and UK is the unit group of K. We explicitly determine all the cyclotomic fields K = ℚ(ζn) such that [Formula: see text]. Then we apply it to the unit square problem raised in [Y. Li and X. Zhang, Global unit squares and local unit squares, J. Number Theory128 (2008) 2687–2694]. In particular, we prove that the unit square problem does not hold for ℚ(ζn) if n has more than three distinct prime factors, i.e. for each odd prime p, there exists a unit, which is a square in all local fields ℚ(ζn)v with v | p but not a square in ℚ(ζn), if n has more than three distinct prime factors.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to find all the prime numbers p for which whenever we add to p an odd square less than p we obtain a number which has at most two different prime factors. We solve completely the cases $p\equiv 1,3,5 \pmod 8$. The idea of the proof in these cases is to find the class number for the quadratic imaginary field $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt p)$. Since we know all these quadratic imaginary fields with class number 1, 2 or 4, we are able to solve these cases. The most interesting case is $p\equiv 7 \pmod 8$. We prove in this case that the Ono invariant of the field equals the class number. S. Louboutin succeeded to find all these fields, with one possible exception. Assuming a Restricted Riemann Hypothesis, the list of Louboutin is complete.

Abstract:In classical number theory, one has the famous theorem of Kummer–Sinnott giving the index of the cyclotomic units in the total unit group. Using the division values of sgn-normalized rank one Drinfeld modules, we construct the group of extended cyclotomic units for an abelian extension of a global function field and calculate its index in the whole unit group. The result could be regarded as an analogue and a generalization of Kummer–Sinnott's.

Abstract:In earlier work we initiated a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic geometric invariants of modular curves in a systematic way. In the present work we continue this program, with a focus on the two smallest sporadic simple Mathieu groups. To do this we first elucidate a connection between a special case of umbral moonshine and the imaginary quadratic class numbers. Then we use this connection to classify a distinguished set of modules for the smallest sporadic Mathieu group. Finally we establish consequences of the classification for the congruent number problem of antiquity.
