Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:Let G be a finite abelian group with |G| > 1. Let a (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) be k distinct elements of G and let b (1), aEuro broken vertical bar, b (k) be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation pi on {1, aEuro broken vertical bar,k} such that a (1) b (pi(1)), aEuro broken vertical bar, a (k) b (pi(k)) are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Abstract:In this paper we consider two functions related to the arithmetic and geometric means of element orders of a finite group, showing that certain lower bounds on such functions strongly affect the group structure. In particular, for every prime p , we prove a sufficient condition for a finite group to be p -nilpotent, that is, a group whose elements of p′ -order form a normal subgroup. Moreover, we characterize finite cyclic groups with prescribed number of prime divisors.

Abstract:Originally motivated by questions of P. Etingof related to growth rates of tensor powers in symmetric tensor categories, we obtain general bounds on the order of finite subgroups of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{C})$ with restricted composition factors (as usual, modulo Abelian normal subgroups). We place the question in a wider context, and find other applications.

Abstract:We obtain an asymptotic upper bound for the product of the $p$-parts of the orders of certain composition factors of a finite group acting completely reducibly and faithfully on a finite vector space of order divisible by a prime $p$. An application is given for the diameter of a nondiagonal orbital graph of an affine primitive permutation group.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ of order $n.$ Denote the sum of the inverse-power of element orders in $G$ by $m(G).$ Let $\mathbb{Z}_n$ be the cyclic group of order $n.$ Suppose $G$ is a non-cyclic group of order $n$ then we show that $m(G)\geq \frac{5}{4}m(\mathbb{Z}_n).$ Our result improves the inequality $m(G)>m(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ obtained by Baniasad Azad, M., and Khorsravi B. Moreover, this bound is best as for $n=4l, l$ odd, there exists a group $G$ of order $n$ satisfying $m(G)=\frac{5}{4}m(\mathbb{Z}_n)$. Moreover, we will establish that $\frac{1}{q-1}m(G)< m(\mathbb{Z}_n)\leq \frac{4}{5}m(G),$ where $G$ is a non-cyclic group of odd order.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 02, Page 341-346, June 2024. Let [math] be a finite group and [math] the set of all irreducible complex characters of [math]. Let [math] be the set of all irreducible complex character degrees of [math] and denote by [math] the set of all primes which divide some character degree of [math]. The character-prime graph [math] associated to [math] is a simple undirected graph whose vertex set is [math] and there is an edge between two distinct primes [math] and [math] if and only if the product [math] divides some character degree of [math]. We show that the finite nonabelian simple groups [math], [math], [math], [math], [math] and [math] are uniquely determined by their degree-patterns and orders.

Abstract:Given a positive integer $u$ and a simple algebraic group $G$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p$, we derive properties about the subvariety $G_{[u]}$ of $G$ consisting of elements of $G$ of order dividing $u$. In particular, we determine the dimension of $G_{[u]}$, completing results of Lawther [7] in the special case where $G$ is of adjoint type. We also apply our results to the study of finite simple quotients of triangle groups, giving further insight on a conjecture we proposed in [10] as well as proving that some finite quasisimple groups are not quotients of certain triangle groups.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ and an irreducible complex character $\chi$ of $G$, the codegree of $\chi$ is defined as the integer ${\rm cod}(\chi)=|G:\ker\chi|/\chi(1)$. It was conjectured by G. Qian in [13] that, for every element $g$ of $G$, there exists an irreducible character $\chi$ of $G$ such that ${\rm cod}(\chi)$ is a multiple of the order of $g$; the conjecture has been verified under the assumption that $G$ is solvable ([13]) or almost-simple ([11]). In this paper, we prove that Qian's conjecture is true for every finite group whose Fitting subgroup is trivial, and we show that the analysis of the full conjecture can be reduced to groups having a solvable socle.

Element orders in extraspecial groups

Abstract:By using the structure and some properties of extraspecial and generalized/almost extraspecial $p$-groups, we explicitly determine the number of elements of specific orders in such groups. As a consequence, one may find the number of cyclic subgroups of any (generalized/almost) extraspecial group. For a finite group $G$, the ratio of the number of cyclic subgroups to the number of subgroups is called the cyclicity degree of $G$ and is denoted by $cdeg(G)$. We show that the set containing the cyclicity degrees of all finite groups is dense in $[0, 1]$. This is equivalent to giving an affirmative answer to the following question posed by Tóth and Tărnăuceanu: ``For every $a\in [0, 1]$, does there exist a sequence $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of finite groups such that $\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty} cdeg(G_n)=a$?". We show that such sequences are formed of finite direct products of extraspecial groups of a specific type.

The main purpose of this paper is to establish new results on gaps between the elements of multiplicative subgroups of finite fields. Abstract:In a finite group G , ρ(G) denotes the product of element orders of G . Let p,q,r,s and t be prime numbers. Recently, it was proved that Cp3 , C pq , Cp2q and C pqrs are characterizable by the product of element orders, and if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr) , then G≅A5 or Cpqr . In this paper, we continue this work and we show that Cp×A5 (for p > 5) and C pqrst are characterizable by the product of element orders. In the rest of the paper, we show that if ρ(G)=ρ(Cpqr)sρ(Cs)p2q, then (p,q,r,s)=(2,3,5,11) and G≅L2(11) . This shows that the structure of ρ(G) uniquely determined L2(11) and so L2(11) is the only group with this form of ρ(G) .

Abstract:Continuing our work on group-theoretic generalizations of the prime Ax-Katz Theorem, we give a lower bound on the $p$-adic divisibility of the cardinality of the set of simultaneous zeros $Z(f_1,f_2,\ldots,f_r)$ of $r$ maps $f_j:A\rightarrow B_j$ between arbitrary finite commutative groups $A$ and $B_j$ in terms of the invariant factors of $A, B_1,B_2,\dotsc,B_r$ and the \emph{functional degrees} of the maps $f_1,f_2,\dotsc,f_r$.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group and let ψ(G) denote the sum of element orders of G. It is well-known that the maximum value of φ on the set of groups of order n, where n is a positive integer, will occur at the cyclic group Cn. For nilpotent groups, we prove a natural generalization of this result, obtained by replacing the element orders of G with the element orders relative to a certain subgroup H of G. Abstract:We find the nonabelian finite simple groups with order prime divisors not exceeding 1000. More generally, we determine the sets of nonabelian finite simple groups whose maximal order prime divisor is a fixed prime less than 1000. Our results are based on calculations in the computer algebra system GAP.

Abstract:Let X be a normal complex algebraic variety, and p a prime. We show that there exists an integer N=N(X, p) such that: any non-trivial, irreducible representation of the fundamental group of X, which arises from geometry, must be non-trivial mod p^N. The proof involves an analysis of the action of the Galois group of a finitely generated field on the etale fundamental group of X. We also prove many arithmetic statements about fundamental groups which are of independent interest, and give several applications.

Abstract:This paper is an attempt to find out which properties of a finite group G can be expressed in terms of commutators of elements of coprime orders. A criterion of solubility of G in terms of such commutators is obtained. We also conjecture that every element of a nonabelian simple group is a commutator of elements of coprime orders and we confirm this conjecture for the alternating groups.

Abstract:We describe a generalization of the concept of a pc presentation that applies to groups with a nontrivial solvable radical. Such a representation can be much more efficient in terms of memory use and even of arithmetic, than permuattion and matrix representations.
