Abstract:Let k be a global function field over the finite field F(q) with a fixed place infinity of degree 1. Let K be a cyclic extension of degree dividing q - 1, in which infinity is totally ramified. For a certain abelian extension L of k containing K, there are two notions of the group of cyclotomic units arising from sign normalized rank 1 Drinfeld modules on k and on K. In this article we compare these two groups of cyclotomic units.

Abstract:Let k = Q(√u) (u ≠ 1 squarefree), K any possible cyclic quartic field containing k. A close relation is established between K and the genus group of k. In particular: (1) Each K can be written uniquely as K = Q(√vwη), where η is fixed in k and satisfies η ⪢ 1, (η) = U2√u, |U2| = |(√u)|, (v, u) = 1, v ∈ Z is squarefree, w|u, 0 < w < √u. Thus if u ≠ a2 + b2, there is no K ⊃ k. If u = a2 + b2 then for each fixed v there are 2g − 1K ⊃ k, where g is the number of prime divisors of u. (2) Kk has a relative integral basis (RIB) (i.e., OK is free over Ok) iff N(ε0) = −1 and w = 1, where ε0 is the fundamental unit of k, (or, equivalently, iff K = Q(√vε0√u), (v, u) = 1). (3) A RIB is constructed explicitly whenever it exists. (4) disc(K) is given. In particular, the following results are special cases of (2): (i) Narkiewicz showed in 1974 that Kk has a RIB if u is a prime; (ii) Edgar and Peterson (J. Number Theory 12 (1980), 77–83) showed that for u composite there is at least one K ⊃ k having no RIB. Besides, it follows from (4) that the classification and integral basis of K given by Albert (Ann. of Math. 31 (1930), 381–418) are wrong.

On units with Galois complex conjugates of equal absolute value

Abstract:We prove, using a theorem of Northcott, that if a number field K with s real embeddings and 2t complex ones has a group of units U such that all elements in U have all its complex conjugates of same absolute value, then one necessarily has t = 1. This fact has an interesting implication in complex hermitian geometry, namely it describes all Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds carrying locally conformally Kahler structures. It is then shown that the same method also works for the situation concerning the existence of pluriclosed metrics on Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In this paper, it is proved that if F is a global field, then for any integer n > 3, there is an extension field E over F of degree n such that K 2 E is not generated by the Steinberg symbols {a, b} with a ∈ F*, b, ∈ E*. If however, F is a number field and D is a finite-dimensional central division F-algebra with square free index, then K 2 D is always generated by the Steinberg symbols {a, b} with a ∈ F*, b ∈ D*. Finally, the tame kernels of central division algebras over F are expressed explicitly.

Rankin-Selberg's local zeta integrals produce linear functionals on generic irreducible admissible smooth representations of $GL_n(k)\times GL_r(k)$, with certain invariance properties. Abstract:In this paper, using the theory of double coverings of cyclotomic fields, we give a formula for [Formula: see text], where K = ℚ(ζn), G = Gal (K/ℚ), 𝔽2 = ℤ/2ℤ and UK is the unit group of K. We explicitly determine all the cyclotomic fields K = ℚ(ζn) such that [Formula: see text]. Then we apply it to the unit square problem raised in [Y. Li and X. Zhang, Global unit squares and local unit squares, J. Number Theory128 (2008) 2687–2694]. In particular, we prove that the unit square problem does not hold for ℚ(ζn) if n has more than three distinct prime factors, i.e. for each odd prime p, there exists a unit, which is a square in all local fields ℚ(ζn)v with v | p but not a square in ℚ(ζn), if n has more than three distinct prime factors.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the higher even $K$-groups of the ring of integers of a number field in terms of class groups of an appropriate extension of the number field in question. This is a natural extension of the previous collective works of Browkin, Keune and Kolster, where they considered the case of $K_2$. We then revisit the Kummer's criterion of totally real fields as generalized by Greenberg and Kida. In particular, we give an algebraic $K$-theoretical formulation of this criterion which we will prove using the algebraic $K$-theoretical results developed here.

Abstract:We prove that the Krull-Schmidt decomposition of the Galois module of the $p$-adic completion of algebraic units is controlled by the primes that are ramified in the Galois extension and the $S$-ideal class group. We also compute explicit upper bounds for the number of possible Galois module structures of algebraic units when the Galois group is cyclic of order $p^{2}$ or $p^{3}$.

Abstract:In this note, we study the unit groups and class numbers of three classes of bicyclic biquadratic number fields. Following Wada and Zhang's methods, the unit group and class number of a bicyclic biquadratic number field can be represented by the fundamental units and class numbers of their quadratic subgroups. The reason why this method works in our case is that the fundamental unit of the quadratic subfields of our bicyclic biquadratic fields can be determined explicitly.

Abstract:Let K be an arbitrary field of characteristic not equal to 2. Let m, n is an element of N and V be an m dimensional orthogonal space over K. There is a right action of the Brauer algebra B-n(m) on the n-tensor space V-circle times n which centralizes the left action of the orthogonal group O(V). Recently G. I. Lehrer and R. B. Zhang defined certain quasi-idempotents E-i in B-n(m) (see (1.1)) and proved that the annihilator of V-circle times n in B-n(m) is always equal to the two-sided ideal generated by E[(m+ 1)/2] if char K = 0 or char K > 2(m+1). In this paper we extend this theorem to arbitrary field K with char K not equal 2 as conjectured by Lehrer and Zhang. As a byproduct, we discover a combinatorial identity which relates to the dimensions of Specht modules over the symmetric groups of different sizes and a new integral basis for the annihilator of V circle times m+1 in Bm+1(m).

Abstract:Let F be a totally real number field with degree n = [F: Q] >= 3. Mazur and Urbanowicz proved that ifK2OF similar or equal to (Z/2Z)([F:Q]) (*)and F is not Q(zeta(7) +zeta(-1)(7)) or Q(zeta(9) + zeta(-1)(9)), then F must be one of the 14 cases listed in Mazur and Urbanowicz (1992). In this article, it is proved that 3 of these 14 cases don't satisfy (*), while all the other cases satisfy (*). Hence we find all totally real number fields which satisfy (*).

Abstract:Let p be a prime and F be a finite field of characteristic p . Suppose that FG is the group algebra of the finite p -group G over the field F . Let V ( FG ) denote the group of normalized units in FG and let V * ( FG ) denote the unitary subgroup of V ( FG ). If p is odd, then the order of V * ( FG ) is ∣ F ∣ (∣ G ∣−1)/2 . However, the case p = 2 still is open. In this paper, the order of V * ( FG ) is computed when G is a nonabelian 2-group given by a central extension of the form and G ′ ≅ Z 2 , n, m ⩾ 1. Furthermore, a conjecture is confirmed, i.e., the order of V * ( FG ) can be divisible by , where Ω 1 ( G ) = { g ∈ G ∣ g 2 = 1}.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth projective curve over a finite field F with q elements. For m⩾1, let Xm be the curve X over the finite field Fm, the m-th extension of F. Let Kn(m) be the K-group Kn(Xm) of the smooth projective curve Xm. In this paper, we study the structure of the groups Kn(m). If l is a prime, we establish an analogue of Iwasawa theorem in algebraic number theory for the orders of the l-primary part Kn(lm){l} of Kn(lm). In particular, when X is an elliptic curve E defined over F, our method determines the structure of Kn(E). Our results can be applied to construct an efficient DL system in elliptic cryptography.

Abstract:Let U ( n , ℚ) be the group of all n × n (upper) unitriangular matrices over rational numbers field ℚ. Let S be a subset of U ( n , ℚ). In this paper, we prove that S is a subgroup of U ( n , ℚ) if and only if the ( i, j )-th entry S ij satisfies some condition (see Theorem 3.5).
