Abstract:We classify all complex quadratic number fields with 2-class group of type (2,2^m) whose Hilbert 2-class fields have class groups of 2-rank equal to 2. These fields all have 2-class field tower of length 2. We still don't know examples of fields with 2-class field tower of length 3, but the smallest candidate is the field with discriminant -1015.

Abstract:We first study some families of maximal real subfields of cyclotomic fields with even class number, and then explore the implications of large plus class numbers of cyclotomic fields. We also discuss capitulation of the minus part and the behaviour of p-class groups in cyclic ramified p-extensions.

Abstract:Let $K= \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ be a real quadratic field with $d$ having three distinct prime factors. We show that the $2$-class group of each layer in the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of $K$ is $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ under certain elementary assumptions on the prime factors of $d$. In particular, it validates Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of the Iwasawa $\lambda$-invariant for a new family of infinitely many real quadratic fields.

Abstract:The $p$-group generation algorithm is used to verify that the Hilbert $3$-class field tower has length $3$ for certain imaginary quadratic fields $K$ with $3$-class group $\mathrm{Cl}_3(K) \cong [3,3]$. Our results provide the first examples of finite $p$-class towers of length $> 2$ for an odd prime $p$.

Abstract:We generalize Schoof's theorem in 1986 and apply this to construct a class of Kummer extensions of the cyclotomic fields with infinite class tower. As an application, we give some number fields with a small root discriminant, which has an infinite $p$-class field tower when $p=3, 5, 7$.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the unit groups and the $2$-class numbers of the Fröhlich's triquadratic fields $\KK=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{p},\sqrt{q})$, where $p$ and $q$ are two prime numbers such that ($p\equiv 1 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$) or ($p\equiv 5$ or $3 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$). Furthermore, we determine some families of the fields $\KK$ whose $2$-class groups are trivial or cyclic non trivial, and some other families with $2$-class groups isomorphic to the Klein group.

Abstract:This paper presents a necessary condition for the ideal class group of an imaginary quadratic function field K = k(~(1/2)D) (k = Fq(x),2+q) to be of exponent ≤ 2. The condition is proved to be sufficient in some cases. Particularly, the authors present an analogue of S. Louboutin's result[1] in the case of function field.

Abstract:For any positive integer $n$, we show that there exists a real number field $k$ (resp. $k'$) of degree $2^n$ whose $2$-class group is isomorphic $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ such that the Galois group of the maximal unramified extension of $k$ (resp. $k'$) over $k$ (resp. $k'$) is abelian (resp. non abelian, more precisely isomorphic to $Q_8$ or $D_8$, the quaternion and the dihedral group of order $8$ respectively). In fact, we construct the first examples in literature of families of real biquadratic fields whose unramified abelian Iwasawa module is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and so that satisfying the Greenberg conjecture.

Abstract:Cyclic number fields of odd prime degree are constructed as ray class fields over the rational number field. They are collected in multiplets sharing a common conductor and discriminant. The algorithms are implemented in Magma and applied to all cyclic quintic and cyclic cubic fields with conductors below 100000. Our primary attention is devoted to the theory of cyclic cubic fields with two or three prime divisors of the conductor. These fields form doublets and quartets. Theoretical techniques comprise cubic residue conditions between the primes dividing the conductor, the structure of 3-class groups of all components of doublets and quartets, Galois cohomology of unit groups and ambiguous principal ideals, absolute genus fields and their bicyclic bicubic subfields, class number relations, transfer kernels and abelian quotient invariants of unramified cyclic cubic extensions and their impact on the class field tower, pattern recognition via Artin transfers on descendant trees of finite groups with order a power of 3, the Shafarevich Theorem on the relation rank of the 3-class field tower group, and the Galois action on the tower group and on its metabelianization. Rigorous proofs are given for the first occurrences of three-stage towers over cyclic cubic fields with elementary bicyclic or tricyclic or non-elementary bicyclic 3-class group. Experimentally, the second p-class groups and the length of the p-class tower are determined for all conductors below 100000 and for p=2,3,5, with the exception of the few intricate octets. An interesting application is able to identify and realize the closed groups by Andozhskii and Tsvetkov.

Abstract:This paper develops explicit class field theory for orders: of rank 1 in any global function field -- Hayes theory -- and of rank 2 in real quadratic function fields -- Real Multiplication. The essential ingredient in the development of the Hayes Theory is an orders version of Shimura's Main Theorem on Complex Multiplication. The section on Real Multiplication for orders uses values of the quantum modular invariant to generate the Hilbert class field of a rank 2 order contained in the integral closure of $\mathbb{F}_{q}[T]$.

Abstract:We consider the class numbers of imaginary quadratic extensions $F(\sqrt{-p})$, for certain primes $p$, of totally real quadratic fields $F$ which have class number one. Using seminal work of Shintani, we obtain two elementary class number formulas for many such fields. The first expresses the class number as an alternating sum of terms that we generate from the coefficients of the power series expansions of two simple rational functions that depend on the arithmetic of $F$ and $p$. The second makes use of expansions of $1/p$, where $p$ is a prime such that $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and $p$ remains inert in $F$. More precisely, for a generator $\varepsilon_F$ of the totally positive unit group of $\mathcal{O}_F$, the base-$\varepsilon_{F}$ expansion of $1/p$ has period length $\ell_{F,p}$, and our second class number formula expresses the class number as a finite sum over disjoint cosets of size $\ell_{F,p}$.

Abstract:Let F be a quadratic number field. We give a criterion, via Hilbert symbols, for an element of order two in the tame kernel of F to be a fourth power in the tame kernel of F. The result can be applied to compute the 8-rank of the tame kernel of F and the Tate kernel of an imaginary quadratic number field. We list the 8-ranks of K2OF for all quadratic number fields whose discriminants have exactly two odd prime divisors. In the case when F is an imaginary quadratic number field with the 8-rank of K2OF=0, the Tate kernel of F is given too. An application of our method to the maximal real subfield of a cyclotomic field is discussed. Numerical examples, in particular the examples of quadratic number fields F with 4-rank of K2OF= 8-rank of K2OF=2 illustrate our results.
