Abstract:We generalize Schoof's theorem in 1986 and apply this to construct a class of Kummer extensions of the cyclotomic fields with infinite class tower. As an application, we give some number fields with a small root discriminant, which has an infinite $p$-class field tower when $p=3, 5, 7$.

Abstract:Cyclic number fields of odd prime degree are constructed as ray class fields over the rational number field. They are collected in multiplets sharing a common conductor and discriminant. The algorithms are implemented in Magma and applied to all cyclic quintic and cyclic cubic fields with conductors below 100000. Our primary attention is devoted to the theory of cyclic cubic fields with two or three prime divisors of the conductor. These fields form doublets and quartets. Theoretical techniques comprise cubic residue conditions between the primes dividing the conductor, the structure of 3-class groups of all components of doublets and quartets, Galois cohomology of unit groups and ambiguous principal ideals, absolute genus fields and their bicyclic bicubic subfields, class number relations, transfer kernels and abelian quotient invariants of unramified cyclic cubic extensions and their impact on the class field tower, pattern recognition via Artin transfers on descendant trees of finite groups with order a power of 3, the Shafarevich Theorem on the relation rank of the 3-class field tower group, and the Galois action on the tower group and on its metabelianization. Rigorous proofs are given for the first occurrences of three-stage towers over cyclic cubic fields with elementary bicyclic or tricyclic or non-elementary bicyclic 3-class group. Experimentally, the second p-class groups and the length of the p-class tower are determined for all conductors below 100000 and for p=2,3,5, with the exception of the few intricate octets. An interesting application is able to identify and realize the closed groups by Andozhskii and Tsvetkov.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We study growth patterns associated with finitely ramified Galois groups considered over the various number fields varying in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower. These Galois groups can be considered as non-commutative analogues of ray class groups. For certain $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions in which a given prime above $p$ is completely split, we prove precise asymptotic lower bounds. Our investigations are motivated by the classical results of Iwasawa, who showed that there are growth patterns for $p$-primary class numbers of the number fields in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower.

Abstract:Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension field of an algebraic number field $k$. Moreover, we take a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $K_\infty$ over $k_\infty$. In this paper, we study the behavior of the $p$-part of the class number of certain intermediate fields of $K_\infty /k$. We also consider the structure of the unramified Iwasawa module of $K_\infty / k_\infty$ for several cases.

Abstract:We prove, assuming resolution of singularities in positive characteristic, an analogue of Siegel's theorem on sum of squares in positive characteristic. The method of proof combines techniques from central simple algebras with model theory and builds on work of Anscombe, Dittmann and Fehm. As an application, we show that, for each finite field $\mathbb{F}$ of odd characteristic and any positive integer $n$ coprime with the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$, the first-order theory of the field given by the compositum of the fields generated by adjoining the $n$--th roots of all monic irreducible polynomials in $\mathbb{F}[t]$, of degree divisible by $n$ is undecidable in the language of rings with the variable $t$ as a constant.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a tower of number fields $\cdots \supseteq K(1) \supseteq K(0) \supseteq K$ arising naturally from a continuous $p$-adic representation of $\mathrm{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/K)$, referred to as a $p$-adic Lie tower over $K$. A recent conjecture of Daqing Wan hypothesizes, for certain $p$-adic Lie towers of curves over $\mathbb{F}_p$, a stable (polynomial) growth formula for the genus. Here we prove the analogous result in characteristic zero, namely: the $p$-adic valuation of the discriminant of the extension $K(i)/K$ is given by a polynomial in $i,p^i$ for $i$ sufficiently large. This generalizes a previously known result on discriminant-growth in $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of local fields of characteristic zero.

Abstract:Let $\ell$ and $p$ be prime numbers and $K_{n,m}=\mathbb{Q}(p^{\frac{1}{\ell^n}},\zeta_{2\ell^{m}})$. We study the $\ell$-class group of $K_{n,m}$ in this paper. When $\ell=2$, we determine the structure of the $2$-class group of $K_{n,m}$ for all $(n,m)\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^2$ in the case $p=2$ or $p\equiv 3, 5\bmod{8}$, and for $(n,m)=(n,0)$, $(n,1)$ or $(1,m)$ in the case $p\equiv 7\bmod{16}$, eneralizing the results of Parry about the $2$-divisibility of the class number of $K_{2,0}$. We also obtain results about the $\ell$-class group of $K_{n,m}$ when $\ell$ is odd and in particular $\ell=3$. The main tools we use are class field theory, including Chevalley's ambiguous class number formula and its generalization by Gras, and a stationary result about the $\ell$-class groups in the $2$-dimensional Kummer tower $\{K_{n,m}\}$.

Abstract:The $p$-group generation algorithm is used to verify that the Hilbert $3$-class field tower has length $3$ for certain imaginary quadratic fields $K$ with $3$-class group $\mathrm{Cl}_3(K) \cong [3,3]$. Our results provide the first examples of finite $p$-class towers of length $> 2$ for an odd prime $p$.

Abstract:The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].

Abstract:We describe and give computational results of a procedure to compute the divisor class number and regulator of most purely cubic function fields of unit rank 2. Our implementation is an improvement to Pollard's Kangaroo method in infrastructures, using distribution results of class numbers as well as information on the congruence class of the divisor class number, and an adaptation that efficiently navigates these torus-shaped infrastructures. Moreover, this is the first time that an efficient "square-root" algorithm has been applied to the infrastructure of a global field of unit rank 2. With the exception of certain function fields defined by Picard curves, our examples are the largest known divisor class numbers and regulators ever computed for a function field of genus 3.

We also prove the $3$ - divisibility of the plus part of the class number of another family consisting of infinitely many cyclotomic fields. Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime and let $\mathbb{Q}_p$ be the field of $p$-adic numbers. It is known that the finite extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of a given degree are finite up to isomorphism. Given a cubic field extension $L$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ generated by the root of an irreducible polynomial $h$, we present a practical (closed-form) method to determine the isomorphism class in which $L$ lives, based on the coefficients of $h$. We discuss the subtleties of the wildly ramified case, when the degree of the extension coincides with $p$, the characteristic of the residue field. We also present a method for tamely ramified extensions of arbitrary prime degree.

Abstract:We develop Kummer theory for algebraic function fields in finitely many transcendental variables. We consider any finitely generated Kummer extension (possibly, over a cyclotomic extension) of an algebraic function field, and describe the structure of its Galois group. Our results show in a precise sense how the questions of computing the degrees of these extensions and of computing the group structures of their Galois groups reduce to the corresponding questions for the Kummer extensions of their constant fields.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a projective variety over a number field $K$ endowed with a height function associated to an ample line bundle on $X$. Given an algebraic extension $F$ of $K$ with a sufficiently big Northcott number, we can show that there are finitely many cycles in $X_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ of bounded degree defined over $F$. Fields $F$ with the required properties were explicitly constructed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2107.09027" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2107.09027">arXiv:2107.09027</a> and <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.04446" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.04446">arXiv:2204.04446</a>, motivating our investigation. We point out explicit specializations to canonical heights associated to abelian varieties and selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^n$. We apply similar methods to the study of CM-points. As a crucial tool, we introduce a refinement of Northcott's theorem.

Abstract:This article discusses variants of Weber's class number problem in the spirit of arithmetic topology to connect the results of Sinnott--Kisilevsky and Kionke. Let $p$ be a prime number. We first prove the $p$-adic convergence of class numbers in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a global field and a similar result in a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-cover of a compact 3-manifold. Secondly, we establish an explicit formula for the $p$-adic limit of the $p$-power-th cyclic resultants of a polynomial using roots of unity of orders prime to $p$, the $p$-adic logarithm, and the Iwasawa invariants. Finally, we give thorough investigations of torus knots, twist knots, and elliptic curves; we complete the list of the cases with $p$-adic limits being in $\mathbb{Z}$ and find the cases such that the base $p$-class numbers are small and $\nu$'s are arbitrarily large.

Some new infinite families of non-$p$-rational real quadratic fields

Abstract:Fix a finite collection of primes $\{ p_j \}$, not containing $2$ or $3$. Using some observations which arose from attempts to solve the SIC-POVMs problem in quantum information, we give a simple methodology for constructing an infinite family of simultaneously non-$p_j$-rational real quadratic fields, unramified above any of the $p_j$. Alternatively these may be described as infinite sequences of instances of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$, for varying $D$, where every $p_j$ is a $k$-Wall-Sun-Sun prime, or equivalently a generalised Fibonacci-Wieferich prime. One feature of these techniques is that they may be used to yield fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ for which a $p$-power cyclic component of the torsion group of the Galois groups of the maximal abelian pro-$p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside primes above $p$, is of size $p^a$ for $a\geq1$ arbitrarily large.

Abstract:We establish that any finite extension of function fields of genus greater than 1 whose relative class group is trivial is Galois and cyclic. This depends on a result from a preceding paper which establishes a finite list of possible Weil polynomials for both fields. Given this list, we analyze most cases by computing options for the splittings of low-degree places in the extension, then consider the effect of these options on the Weil polynomials of certain isogeny factors of the Jacobian of the Galois closure. In one case, we use instead an analysis based on principal polarizations, modeled on an argument of Howe.

Abstract:We prove the finiteness of the genus of finite-dimensional division algebras over many infinitely generated fields. More precisely, let $K$ be a finite field extension of a field which is a purely transcendental extension of infinite transcendence degree of some subfield. We show that if $D$ is a central division $K$-algebra, then ${\bf gen}(D)$ consists of Brauer classes $[D']$ such that $[D]$ and $[D']$ generate the same subgroup of $Br(K)$. In particular, the genus of any division $K$-algebra of exponent 2 is trivial. Note that the family of such fields is closed under finitely generated extensions. Moreover, if $char(K) \ne 2$, we prove that the genus of a simple algebraic group of type $\mathrm{G}_2$ over such a field $K$ is trivial.
