Abstract:In this paper, we compute the unit groups and the $2$-class numbers of the Fröhlich's triquadratic fields $\KK=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{p},\sqrt{q})$, where $p$ and $q$ are two prime numbers such that ($p\equiv 1 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$) or ($p\equiv 5$ or $3 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$). Furthermore, we determine some families of the fields $\KK$ whose $2$-class groups are trivial or cyclic non trivial, and some other families with $2$-class groups isomorphic to the Klein group.

Abstract:A characterization of the quotients of $p$-class tower groups of quadratic fields by terms in the lower $p$-central series plays an important role in the formulation of conjectures by Boston, Hajir and the author about the distribution of such groups as the base field varies. In this paper, another equivalent criterion is given which resolves an issue that arose as part of the group-theoretical calculations carried out in relation to these conjectures.

Abstract:We consider the class numbers of imaginary quadratic extensions $F(\sqrt{-p})$, for certain primes $p$, of totally real quadratic fields $F$ which have class number one. Using seminal work of Shintani, we obtain two elementary class number formulas for many such fields. The first expresses the class number as an alternating sum of terms that we generate from the coefficients of the power series expansions of two simple rational functions that depend on the arithmetic of $F$ and $p$. The second makes use of expansions of $1/p$, where $p$ is a prime such that $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and $p$ remains inert in $F$. More precisely, for a generator $\varepsilon_F$ of the totally positive unit group of $\mathcal{O}_F$, the base-$\varepsilon_{F}$ expansion of $1/p$ has period length $\ell_{F,p}$, and our second class number formula expresses the class number as a finite sum over disjoint cosets of size $\ell_{F,p}$.

Abstract:Unit group computations are a cryptographic primitive for which one has a fast quantum algorithm, but the required number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^5)$. In this work we propose a modification of the algorithm for which the number of qubits is $\tilde O(m^2)$ in the case of cyclotomic fields. Moreover, under a recent conjecture on the size of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_m + \zeta_m^{-1})$, the quantum algorithms is much simpler because it is a hidden subgroup problem (HSP) algorithm rather than its error estimation counterpart: continuous hidden subgroup problem (CHSP). We also discuss the (minor) speed-up obtained when exploiting Galois automorphisms thanks to the Buchmann-Pohst algorithm over $\mathcal{O}_K$-lattices.

Abstract:For any positive integer $n$, we show that there exists a real number field $k$ (resp. $k'$) of degree $2^n$ whose $2$-class group is isomorphic $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ such that the Galois group of the maximal unramified extension of $k$ (resp. $k'$) over $k$ (resp. $k'$) is abelian (resp. non abelian, more precisely isomorphic to $Q_8$ or $D_8$, the quaternion and the dihedral group of order $8$ respectively). In fact, we construct the first examples in literature of families of real biquadratic fields whose unramified abelian Iwasawa module is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, and so that satisfying the Greenberg conjecture.

Abstract:We prove that the Krull-Schmidt decomposition of the Galois module of the $p$-adic completion of algebraic units is controlled by the primes that are ramified in the Galois extension and the $S$-ideal class group. We also compute explicit upper bounds for the number of possible Galois module structures of algebraic units when the Galois group is cyclic of order $p^{2}$ or $p^{3}$.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to find all the prime numbers p for which whenever we add to p an odd square less than p we obtain a number which has at most two different prime factors. We solve completely the cases $p\equiv 1,3,5 \pmod 8$. The idea of the proof in these cases is to find the class number for the quadratic imaginary field $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt p)$. Since we know all these quadratic imaginary fields with class number 1, 2 or 4, we are able to solve these cases. The most interesting case is $p\equiv 7 \pmod 8$. We prove in this case that the Ono invariant of the field equals the class number. S. Louboutin succeeded to find all these fields, with one possible exception. Assuming a Restricted Riemann Hypothesis, the list of Louboutin is complete.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a modulo $p$ congruence which connects the class number of the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p})$ and the trace of a certain monomial in a root $\theta$ of the Artin-Schreier polynomial $\theta^{p}-\theta-1$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ of $p$ elements. This formula has a flavor of Dirichlet's class number formula which connects the class number and the $L$-value. The proof of our formula is based on several formulae satisfied by the Bell number, where the latter is defined as the number of partitions of $\{ 1, 2, ..., n \}$ and a purely combinatorial object. Among such formulae, we prove a generalization of the so called ``trace formula'' due to Barsky and Benzaghou which describes the special values of the Bell polynomials modulo $p$ by the trace mentioned above.

Abstract:Cohen, Lenstra, and Martinet have given conjectures for the distribution of class groups of extensions of number fields, but Achter and Malle have given theoretical and numerical evidence that these conjectures are wrong regarding the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the class group when the base number field contains $p$th roots of unity. We give complete conjectures of the distribution of Sylow $p$-subgroups of class groups of extensions of a number field when $p$ does not divide the degree of the Galois closure of the extension. These conjectures are based on $q\rightarrow\infty$ theorems on these distributions in the function field analog and use recent work of the authors on explicitly giving a distribution of modules from its moments. Our conjecture matches many, but not all, of the previous conjectures that were made in special cases taking into account roots of unity.

Abstract:Let p be a prime and F be a finite field of characteristic p . Suppose that FG is the group algebra of the finite p -group G over the field F . Let V ( FG ) denote the group of normalized units in FG and let V * ( FG ) denote the unitary subgroup of V ( FG ). If p is odd, then the order of V * ( FG ) is ∣ F ∣ (∣ G ∣−1)/2 . However, the case p = 2 still is open. In this paper, the order of V * ( FG ) is computed when G is a nonabelian 2-group given by a central extension of the form and G ′ ≅ Z 2 , n, m ⩾ 1. Furthermore, a conjecture is confirmed, i.e., the order of V * ( FG ) can be divisible by , where Ω 1 ( G ) = { g ∈ G ∣ g 2 = 1}.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime, let $N$ be a prime with $N \equiv 1 \pmod{p}$, and let $\zeta_p$ be a primitive $p$-th root of unity. We study the $p$-rank of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(\zeta_p, N^{1/p})$ using Galois cohomological methods and obtain an exact formula for the $p$-rank in terms of the dimensions of certain Selmer groups. Using our formula, we provide a numerical criterion to establish upper and lower bounds for the $p$-rank, analogous to the numerical criteria provided by F.~Calegari--M.~Emerton and K.~Schaefer--E.~Stubley for the $p$-ranks of the class group of $\mathbb{Q}(N^{1/p})$. In the case $p=3$, we use Redei matrices to provide a numerical criterion to exactly calculate the $3$-rank, and also study the distribution of the $3$-ranks as $N$ varies through primes which are $4,7 \pmod{9}$.
