Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.
Micro Defects Evolution of Nickel-Based Single Crystal Superalloys during Shear Deformation: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract:Nickel-based single crystal superalloys have become the main structural materials of the aero-engines due to excellent high-temperature strength. The micro defects evolution of nickel-based single crystal superalloys under shear deformation was investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the present study. It is found that the interfacial dislocations decompose into Shockley dislocations under low shear stress, resulting in the plastic deformation of the Ni phase. The initial plastic deformation of the Ni 3 Al phase is caused by Shockley dislocations cutting into the Ni 3 Al phase. The following deformation from low temperature to medium temperature is controlled by dislocation slip, but the deformation at high temperature is changed. It is also found that the microvoid evolution can be divided into void growth and coalescence during shear deformation. The microvoid could prevent dislocation entanglement, accelerate dislocation decomposition, and promote earlier plastic deformation under relatively low temperatures.

Abstract:Mechanical behaviors of a Ni-based single crystal superalloy have been investigated by tensile testing at various temperatures. Deformation substructures and mechanisms have been systemically revealed from micrometer to atomic scales by using advanced scanning electron and scanning transmission electron microscopes. Results show that deformation mode of the alloy strongly depends on the temperature due to competitive responses of the gamma and gamma' phases under mechanical loading and their original stress statuses. At temperatures from ambient to 750 degrees C, plasticity is governed by dislocation shearing in both phases, where slip modes of gamma are < 110 >{111} and those of gamma' are < 112 >{111}, < 110 >{111} and < 110 > {001}. At moderate temperatures (850 degrees C <= T <= 900 degrees C), plasticity mainly involves microscopically uniform deformation of both phases. The matrix deforms first so that channels parallel to tensile direction are narrowed due to the Poisson's effect, after that deformation of gamma' follows. The active slip modes are < 110 > {111} for gamma, < 112 >{111}, < 110 >{111}, < 110 >{001}, and < 001 >{001} for gamma'. At temperature higher than 1000 degrees C, plastic strain is also derived from deformation of both phases, but deformation of the matrix plays critical roles, due to relatively weak strength of this phase. The operative slip modes are < 110 > {111} for gamma, but mainly < 110 >{001} and < 001 >{001} for gamma'. Our results clearly provide a comprehensive and multiscale (from micrometer to atomic) understanding on the deformation mechanism of Ni-based superalloys, which can be critically beneficial and offer mechanistic guidelines to design new/next generation superalloys. Abstract:The effects of γ′ phase volume fraction, morphology and size on tensile deformation behaviour of Ni-based superalloys at 300 K were studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The differences caused by different parameters were discussed in terms of atomic structure evolution, dislocation motion and stress–strain curve. The results showed that when the volume fraction of the γ′ phase was between 50% and 70%, the tensile strength and elongation increased with the volume fraction, but the variation trend was opposite when it was less than 50%. The cubic γ′ phase produced larger resistance to plastic deformation. Models with different-sized γ′ phases contributed to different fracture modes. Dislocation pile-up was avoided owing to the progressive movement of partial dislocations.

Abstract:Cyclic loading is the main contributor to fatigue failures in mechanical components. In this paper, the fatigue deformation behavior of nickel-based single crystal superalloys was investigated through molecular dynamics methods. It was found that the fatigue process can be divided into the hardening stage and the saturation stage. The stress amplitude, dislocation density and number of planar faults fluctuated before the saturation stage, but they were relatively stable in the saturation stage. The Perfect dislocations at the interface decomposed into Shockley dislocations with temperature increase before fatigue. The decomposition process became more dramatic as fatigue began. As the fatigue continued, the extended dislocations in the Ni phase gradually got rid of the Ni/Ni 3 Al interface and sheared the Ni 3 Al phase, leading to the generation of antiphase boundaries. The extended dislocation moved reciprocally when the fatigue reached the saturation stage. The difference was that the extended dislocations crossed the interface at 300 K but not at other temperatures.

Abstract:The heat treatment process plays a pivotal role in enhancing the characteristics of nickel-based single crystal (NBSC) superalloys. Nevertheless, there exists a paucity of comprehensive investigations concerning the microstructural evolution of NBSC superalloys during heat treatment. This study employs a molecular dynamics simulation method to control the temperature of the NBSC superalloy precisely, aiming to unveil intricate details regarding microstructural evolution, temperature distribution patterns, mechanical properties, and other pertinent aspects during the cooling phase. Additionally, a comparative analysis of internal defect evolution under varying cooling rates is undertaken. The findings highlight the consistently heightened activity of atoms in the γ phase compared to those in the γ' phase. Notably, the stability disparity between these phases gradually diminishes as the temperature decreases during the cooling process. At elevated temperatures, the prevalence of amorphous phases and dislocations in the γ phase channel diminishes concomitantly with the temperature reduction. Strain distribution in the alloy primarily concentrates in the γ phase channel and the central cross position of the γ' phase. The temperature reduction correlates with a decline in the alloy model's strain. In the initial phase of strain reduction, stress fluctuation trends in the X, Y, and Z directions exhibit an initial increase followed by a gradual decrease. Furthermore, the atomic number of HCP defects and dislocation density exhibit distinct patterns of change contingent upon the cooling rates employed.

Abstract:A mesoscale study of a single crystal nickel-base superalloy subjected to an industrially relevant process simulation has revealed the complex interplay between microstructural development and the micromechanical behaviour. As sample gauge volumes were smaller than the length scale of the highly cored structure of the parent material from which they were produced, their subtle composition differences gave rise to differing work hardening rates, influenced by varying secondary dendrite arm spacings, gamma-prime phase solvus temperatures and a topologically inverted gamma/gamma-prime microstructure. The gamma-prime precipitates possessed a characteristic `X' morphology, resulting from the simultaneously active solute transport mechanisms of thermally favoured octodendritic growth and N-type rafting, indicating creep-type mechanisms were prevalent. High resolution-electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) characterisation reveals deformation patterning that follows the gamma/gamma-prime microstructure, with high geometrically necessary dislocation density fields localised to the gamma/gamma-prime interfaces; Orowan looping is evidently the mechanism that mediated plasticity. Examination of the residual elastic stresses indicated the `X' gamma-prime precipitate morphology had significantly enhanced the deformation heterogeneity, resulting in stress states within the gamma channels that favour slip, and that encourage further growth of gamma-prime precipitate protrusions. The combination of such localised plasticity and residual stresses are considered to be critical in the formation of the recrystallisation defect in subsequent post-casting homogenisation heat treatments.

Abstract:The formation of recrystallization can cause great damage on the performance of nickel base single crystal superalloy turbine blade. The stress, strain and stored energy distribution of single crystal superalloy were modeled and simulated under the condition of inhomogeneous deformation. The critical stored energy was established which takes the anisotropic mechanical properties of single crystal superalloy and the recrystallization grain boundary migration process into account. Based on the calculation of the critical stored energy, the recrystallization microstructure in the local deformation zone after heat treatment was simulated by using cellular automaton (CA) method. DD6 single crystal test bars were treated by the cold deformation process and then annealed at the temperature of 1280 C for 30, 60 and 240 min. The experimental results showed that the recrystallization occurred on the surface near the deformation area. The recrystallizaton area and the grain size increased gradually with time. The simulated microstructure results agree well with the experimental ones (EBSD) and indicate that the recrystallization process of single crystal superalloy can be well simulated by the proposed model.

Abstract:In the present paper, the dislocation-precipitate interaction in the Inconel 718 superalloy is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulation. The atomistic model composed of the ellipsoidal Ni3Nb precipitate (γ′′ phase) and the Ni matrix is constructed, and tensile tests on the composite Ni3Nb@Ni system along different loading directions are simulated. The dislocation propagation behaviors in the precipitate interior and at the surface of the precipitate are characterized. The results indicate that the dislocation shearing and bypassing simultaneously occur during plastic deformation. The contact position of the dislocation on the surface of the precipitate could affect the penetration depth of the dislocation. The maximum obstacle size, allowing for the dislocation shearing on the slip planes, is found to be close to 20 nm. The investigation of anisotropic plastic deformation behavior shows that the composite system under the loading direction along the major axis of the precipitate experiences stronger shear strain localizations than that with the loading direction along the minor axis of the precipitate. The precipitate size effect is quantified, indicating that the larger the precipitate, the lower the elastic limit of the flow stress of the composite system. The dislocation accumulations in the precipitate are also examined with the dislocation densities given on specific slip systems. These findings provide atomistic insights into the mechanical behavior of nickel-based superalloys with nano-precipitates.

Abstract:The evolution models of interfacial dislocation and yield mechanism are critical for the mechanical properties of nickel-based single crystal superalloy. In this paper, the deformation process of nickel-based single crystal superalloy was investigated through molecular dynamics methods. It was found that the interfacial dislocations decomposed and formed a special "cone-like" microstructural defect under uniaxial compressive loading, but this special structure would disappear with the increase in temperature. The special structure can significantly improve the yield strength due to its strong ability to hinder the slipping of dislocations. The yield mechanism is the decomposition of sessile dislocations and the shearing of the γ' phase by the Shockley dislocation for uniaxial compressive loading. In contrast, the yield mechanism is the shearing of the γ' phase by extended dislocation and the generation of antiphase boundary for uniaxial tensile loading. Although the temperature did not affect the yield mechanism, it could influence the yield strength by changing the dislocation density. Moreover, both the evolution models of interfacial dislocation and the yield mechanism exhibited tension-compression asymmetry, which eventually led to the tension-compression asymmetry of mechanical properties.

Abstract:It is acknowledged that voids are unavoidable manufacture defects influencing the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of nickel-based superalloys. The present work investigates the influences of void on the dislocation evolution and mechanical properties of nickel-based superalloys under different thermal conditions and strain rates. The simulation uses an embedded cubic model with voids in which the γ′ phase with L12 structure is surrounded by γ phase with FCC structure to represent the real microstructure of single crystal superalloys. A model without voids is also studied. The existence of voids changes the misfit dislocation network by introducing cylindrical dislocation network around the voids which play a vital role on preventing the void coalescence at low strain. Dislocation extraction algorithm (DXA) analysis finds that new type of dislocation appears in the model with voids and the dislocation length is longer. The elastic modulus and yield strength are decreased by voids, as well as the ductility of the material. This paper demonstrates that the accumulation and reaction between dislocations are the most direct reason for declining the mechanical properties of nickel-based superalloys with void defects.
Effects of crack-γ/γ' interface relative distributions on the deformation and crack growth behaviors of a nickel-based superalloy

Abstract:Using the molecular dynamics (MD) method, we investigated the effects of crack distributions on the deformation and crack growth of a nickel (Ni)-based superalloy. The results indicated that as the distance between two cracks increased, both tensile strength and plasticity decreased, while the crack growth rate significantly increased. In systems with short crack distances, strong interactions occurred between the dislocations that emitted from two cracks and the γ/γ' interface mismatched dislocation network. These interactions led to an overlap in the plastic zones ahead of the crack tips at the γ/γ' interface, which resulted in significant passivation at the front and middle regions of the cracks. Consequently, the two cracks merged in the X-direction to form a wide crack. The cracks coalescence consumed a lot of external deformation work, resulting in the highest tensile strength and plasticity. In this study, we proposed a potential approach to simultaneously enhance the strength and plasticity of multidefect systems, providing a theoretical basis for explaining deformation mechanisms and crack growth in these systems.

Abstract:Tensile interruption experiments with different strains were conducted on additively fabricated nickel-based Inconel 939 superalloys at 700 °C to investigate the evolution of multiple deformation mechanisms. The microstructures of different strain groups captured by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were analyzed, and it was concluded that a total of four various deformation mechanisms were identified, of which the first to be activated was the Orowan loop bypassing γ', and a tendency of transition from double to single loop was observed. Anti-phase boundary (APB) shearing was subsequently initiated, with a needed critical resolved shear stress level of approximately 195.82 MPa. Stacking faults (SFs) and deformation twinnings were observed at higher stress, accompanied by the dissociation of dislocations. In addition, the magnitude of the stacking fault energy of AM 939 superalloys at intermediate temperature was calculated and estimated by matching the experimental phenomena with the critical shear stress.

Abstract:Hot compression tests on cylinders using nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD6 were conducted to introduce the stored energy for recrystallization. Annealing was carried out at different temperatures for different time to investigate the kinetics of recrystallization of DD6. The experimental results show that the recrystallization rate increases gradually with temperature. The stress, strain and stored energy distribution of single crystal superalloy were modeled based one macroscopic phenomenon-based elastic-plastic model, considering the orthotropic properties of SX superalloys. Recrystallization microstructure on the cross-section perpendicular to the cylinder axis was simulated using cellular automaton (CA) method. The model can predict experimental results.

Abstract:Stress-controlled low cycle fatigue tests with different mean stress of a second-generation nickel-based single crystal superalloy DD6 with [001] orientation is investigated in the current study. The observation of fracture surface and microstructure show that although the phase structure does not change for different conditions, the damage failure mode changes for different mean stress. It is found that ratcheting strain exhibits a significant dependency on mean stress and microstructure damage. Ratcheting strain cannot be simulated only considering the evolution of back stress. To simulate the whole process evolution of ratcheting strain, crystal plasticity constitutive model coupled with a new anisotropic damage is developed. The simulated results showed that the anisotropic damage model could accurately predict the ratcheting strain for different mean stress. Different damage evolution modes are well identified by a damage index in the proposed model.

Abstract:High temperature uniaxial compression deformation test was carried out on nickel-based powder superalloy FGH96 alloy by thermal processing simulation test machine, and the relationship between grain boundary characteristics and nucleation mechanism of recrystallized grains, growth characteristics of recrystallized cores and related dynamic softening mechanisms was studied. According to the correlation and evolution law of grains, combined with the change trend of grain orientation during the deformation process, the recrystallization behavior characteristics of the grains with special orientation generated during the deformation process were analyzed. When the deformation temperature is 1070 °C, the evolution rules of the substructure grain boundaries with an orientation difference of less than 10° are different under different deformation rate conditions, which indicates that the dynamic softening mechanism of FGH96 alloy is slightly different with the increase of deformation rate. There are different. With the increase of the deformation rate, the nucleation mechanism induced by Σ3 twinning gradually replaced the nucleation mechanism of continuous subgrain rotation and coarsening, and the grain growth rate gradually slowed down.

Abstract:The γ/γ′ interface has an important influence on the nanoscale deformation of nickel-based single crystal superalloy. In this paper, nano-cutting simulations of nickel-based single crystal superalloy are performed by molecular dynamics methods, and the mechanical properties, atomic displacements, dislocation evolution, temperature, surface quality and Al atom precipitation behavior of the workpiece are analyzed in depth. We found that: the γ/γ′ interface will hinder the force conduction and dislocation development, resulting in fluctuation of processing force and dislocation density. In addition, the special two-phase structure will affect the deformation of the material, and the dislocation motion will stay in the γ phase for a long time and occur dislocation accumulation and work hardening, meanwhile, there are more displacement atoms in the γ phase than in the γ′ phase, and the degree of plastic deformation in the γ phase will be more drastic. It is also found that there is always a difference in the temperature distribution of the two phases of the material, and the uneven cutting surface always appears at the junction of the two phases, and the Al atoms on the subsurface will precipitate and form an Al film covering the surface after being influenced by the cutting temperature.

Abstract:Plastic deformation and recrystallization of a Ni-based single crystal superalloy were experimentally investigated. Compression and Brinell Indentation were utilized to cause plastic deformation, and thereafter some deformed samples received heat treatment. Surface topography around the indent confirms the anisotropic plasticity of single crystal superalloys. The influential distance below the indent is much larger than that on the indent surface. Microstructural observation by Electron Back-scatter Diffraction (EBSD) shows that it is easier for nucleation and grain boundary migration in the dendritic arms. In addition, the recovery has almost no effect on preventing recrystallization for deformed samples with small plastic strains (around 5%).

The friction force, atomic displacement, wear scar morphology, subsurface defects, potential energy, and other aspects were comprehensively studied to understand the friction mechanism of NBSC during working conditions. The frictional force fluctuated significantly and the coefficient of friction decreased during the repeated friction process. As the friction cycles increased, the wear scars of the γ' phase deepened, whereas those in the γ phase became shallower. Simultaneously, repeated friction reduced the volume and number of stacking faults. Additionally, the two phases softened to some extent at higher temperatures, but the phase boundary still had good wear resistance at high temperatures.

Abstract:Evolution laws of structure and performance of Cu-10Ni-1Fe-1Mn alloy in the process of continuous casting-planetary rolling-drawing deformation were studied by OM, SEM, TEM, Brinell Hardness tester and universal material testing machine. Results demonstrated that the alloy ingot is composed of thick dendrites. The ingot makes grain crushing and dynamic recrystallization after planetary rolling. The hot rolling samples still have abundant fine recrystallization textures after multi-pass drawings. Due to roller-core head or internal-external mold opposite pressure, dislocations in different regions of sample move along the glide plane, forming a macroscopic slip band. Two adjacent macroscopic slip zones which move toward opposite directions compose the folded structures after the deformation. Refined crystalline strengthening, solution strengthening of Fe, Ni and Mn, work hardening, and iron-containing particle precipitation are major causes of alloy strengthening. SEM analysis of tensile fracture demonstrated that the material still maintained good plasticity after rolling and drawing deformation. However, material plasticity declined with the increase of cold processing-induced deformation.
