Abstract:Along with the development of high energy or high power lasers,especially laser weapon and lasers for controlled nuclear fusion,the laser induced damage threshold of the optical films gradually becomes the bottleneck against the development of the lasers,which is of considerable interest from the world.Laser induced damage mechanism of optical films,test flat and method for laser induced damage threshold were expatiated.The development of researches on the technologies and methods for laser damage resistance of optical films at home and abroad,which included ion beam pretreatment,ion beam or anneal treat-ment,pretest coating with the materials of high refractive index and so on,were analyzed.The pulsed laser deposition with mag-netic filter technology was emphasized in the expectation,and the atom layer deposition was advised to accelerate to develop, which supplied the theoretic base to improve the laser damage resistance of optical films to settle for current requirements.

Abstract:Multi-spectral antireflective coating (AR) was deposited by electron beam evaporation on MgO doped LiNbO3 crystal, and the transmission band of the coating is 1.064 μm, 1.4-1.6 μm and 3.5-4.3 μm. The laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of un-coated and AR-coated samples were measured. The AR-coated samples have a better LIDT than un-coated crystal.

Abstract:Visible + 1.54 mu m laser/long-wave infrared dichroic beamsplitters, which separate the incident spectrum into visible light, laser and longwave infrared light, take an important role in multichannel imaging spectrum technique. The choice of substrates and coating materials was discussed. Then the coating design of reflecting the visible(400 similar to 800nm) and laser (1540nm) light while transmitting the longwave infrared( 8 similar to 12 mu m) spectrum was analysed, and the beamsplitter was manufactured by e-gun evaporation. The measured reflectivity and transmittance of the corresponding channel are all above 94% and the dichroic beanisplitters has been used in practical optical system successfully.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional spatially and temporally resolved method for measuring laser-induced damage fluence by identifying the time onset of defect damage and the damage location in the three-dimensional coordinate system of a Gaussian beam. When considering a second-harmonic beam splitter as an example, the defect fluence of fundamental wave (1064 nm) and second harmonic wave (532 nm) simultaneous irradiation is captured accurately by the proposed method. The defect damage threshold of a second-harmonic beam splitter and the coupling effect between multi-wavelength lasers during defect damage initiation are investigated. Our test method can not only identify complex multi-wavelength laser coupling damage mechanisms that traditional test methods cannot observe, but also provides a new method for obtaining accurate defect information for optical films, which is helpful for improving the laser resistance ability of optical films.</p>

Abstract:The unavoidable surface defects on the practical processed potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) crystals, especially the most common protuberance defects, which are prone to damage under intense laser irradiation, seriously limit the application of KDP optics in laser fusion facilities. In this work, a defect-induced laser damage explosion model that couples the electromagnetic field and stress field was constructed to reproduce the dynamic damage process and reveal the laser-induced damage mechanisms innovatively. First, the near-field optical modulation to incident lasers was considered to describe the effect of structural parameters of surface defects on the optical transmission performance. A multi-physics field coupled failure model was then established for the first time to explore the laser damage mechanism through the dynamic behaviors of laser damage that reproduced by this model. It was proved that the protuberance defects on KDP crystal surface would lead to severe laser damage with the characteristics of large transverse spalling and longitudinal cracks due to the Rayleigh and stress waves, which well agrees with the results of laser damage experiments. The established damage model is capable of revealing the hazards of protuberance defects, and providing effective guidance for the suppression of surface defects introduced in the optical ultra-precision machining processes.

Abstract:Detecting subsurface defects in optical components has always been challenging. This study utilizes laser scattering and photothermal weak absorption techniques to detect surface and subsurface nano-damage precursors of single-crystal silicon components. Based on laser scattering and photothermal weak absorption techniques, we successfully establish the relationship between damage precursors and laser damage resistance. The photothermal absorption level is used as an important parameter to measure the damage resistance threshold of optical elements. Single-crystal silicon elements are processed and post-processed optimally. This research employs dry etching and wet etching techniques to effectively eliminate damage precursors from optical components. Additionally, detection techniques are utilized to comprehensively characterize these components, resulting in the successful identification of optimal damage precursor removal methods for various polishing types of single-crystal silicon components. Consequently, this method efficiently enhances the damage thresholds of optical components.

Abstract:Based on the finite element analysis method, establishment of a three dimensional fused silica lens model under the laser irradiation, and simulated the ideal fused silica surface temperature field and thermal stress field distribution situation, then the influences of subsurface deficiency on fused silica's laser damage threshold (LDT) were analyzed, which include scratch and impurity. It is found that the deficiencies in subsurface may affect the distribution of temperature field and thermal stress field of the fused silica surface, which makes the injected laser beams energy centralize on a small area around the deficiencies, thus leading to stress cracking of fused silica and LDT reduction.

Abstract:Laser-induced structural damage to dielectric thin-film coatings was investigated using a TEM(00) Q-switched ruby laser. This study included mono-, bi-, and multi-layered coatings of the materials TiO2, SiO2, ZrO2, MgF2, and ZnS on substrates of glass, fused silica, rocksalt and spinel. The samples included coatings for antireflection and reflection at the ruby wavelength and were produced either at USC or by a commercial vendor. Damage threshold energy densities were measured with attention paid to dependences on laser beam spot- size, film material and thickness, substrate condition and incipient scattering of the film. Two major facts about laser damage to thin films were discovered. One fact is that laser-induced scatter, indicative of film break-up, is observed prior to the threshold of spark formation at the film. The other fact is that the damage threshold of the thin-film increases as the laser beam spot- size decreases. A theoretical model was developed which correlated the nature and distribution of coating defects to this spot-size dependence.

Abstract:Manufacturing-induced defects have drawn more and more attentions to improve the laser damage resistance performance of KDP crystal applied in high-power laser systems. Here, the morphology of surface scratches on diamond fly-cut KDP crystal is characterized and their effect on the laser damage resistance is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The results indicate that surface scratches could lower laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) by modulating incident lasers and producing resultant local light intensifications. The induced maximum light intensity enhancement factors (LIEFs) are dependent on scratch shapes and dimensions. The diffraction effects originating from scratch edges are responsible for the strongest light intensification. Even for ultra-precision finished KDP surface with scratches that well satisfy the currently applied scratch/dig specification, the induced LIEFs are quite high, indicating that the actual defect dimension allowance should be amended and specified according to the defect-induced LIEFs. The effect of scratches on laser damage resistance is experimentally verified by the tested LIDT, which is approximately consistent with the simulation one. The morphologies of laser damage sites further confirm the role of scratches in lowering LIDT. This work could offer new perspective and guidance for fully evaluating the performance of ultra-precision manufactured optical materials applied in high-power laser facilities.

Abstract:Micro surface defects (SDs) would be unavoidably induced on most fused silica surfaces (FSSs), substantially reducing their laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). There is still no clear understanding of the relation between SD structural feature and their LIDTs, which poses a challenge to the recognition and mitigation of the dangerous SDs with low LIDTs in industrial production. In this work, the brittle-plasticity and stress states of the SDs are found to dominate the atomic point-defect densities on FSSs and resultantly dominate their LIDTs for the first time. Based on this, the SDs have been divided into four categories: pressure-induced brittle defects (PBDs), pressure-induced plastic defects (PPDs), tension-induced brittle defects (TBDs) and tension-induced plastic defects (TPDs). Based on the tested LIDTs, laser damage morphologies and photoluminescence (PL) characteristics, the laser damage resistance of different kinds of SDs are compared, whose reasons are revealed on the basis of the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The sharp increase of the atomic point-defect density from the plasticity to the brittleness of the material, the significant disparity in tensile and compressive strength of fused silica, the distinctly different material response behaviours under tensile and compressive forces, as well as the opposite effects of the tensile and compressive forces on the material compactness significantly affect the atomic point-defect densities on FSSs and resultantly contribute to the different laser damage resistance of different kinds of SDs. This work possesses great significance in solving the laser damage on FSSs. It could also provide a new understanding of the impact of the tensile and compressive forces on the LIDTs of various optical elements.

Abstract:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an emerging coating deposition technique filled with potential that is expected to deposit coatings with high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). As lasers play an important role in space exploration which are gradually moving to higher orbits and longer lifetimes, a higher demand for space laser coatings has been raising. At the current state of the art, the reliability of ALD-deposited laser coatings for space applications is unclear. This work presents investigations on the stability of three ALD-deposited oxide coatings under space proton and UV radiation at values typical for space environment. Changes in the coatings containing low and high amounts of impurities under space radiation were analyzed through optical parse and composition analysis respectively. Both SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 coatings with few impurities generated color centers after irradiation, which resulted in increased absorption loss and reduced transmittance and optical band gap, and increased probability of damage under laser irradiation. However, the changes in the ZrO 2 coating were surprising, when the ZrO 2 coating with a large amount of impurities was exposed to radiation, the impurity atoms bound to Zr were displaced first, and the released Zr combined with the oxygen vacancies in the coating, which reduced the number of defects, reduced the absorption loss of the coating, and led to a higher transmittance and an increased optical band-gap. This work provided a novel insight on the impact of the impurities on the stability of the ALD-manufactured oxide coatings against laser-induced damage in effect with space proton and UV radiation. Additionally, we show that high initial LIDT in ALD-prepared oxides may be compromised by the space radiation, while fine tuning of the impurities may result a mitigation approach leading to enhanced laser coatings for space applications.

Abstract:To repair the damaged SiC coated C/C composites, a double-layer coating including a SiO2-Nd2O3 external layer (∼60 μm) and a Si-SiC inner layer (∼240 μm) was prepared by a slurry-based laser cladding technique, and the laser-ablation tests under two heat fluxes (23.89/39.81 MW m−2) were performed. The spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and 3D profilometer were used for characterization. For avoiding the secondary damage of laser-ablation, the laser-reflection of the repaired area was enhanced, which was conducive to the mitigation of mass and linear ablation. Combined with Finite Element Analysis, by raising the reflectivity, the surface and back temperature of samples could be reduced greatly by 1224 K and 983 K respectively, and plenty of ablation reactions could be avoided. Therefore, the SiO2-Nd2O3 coating possessed an excellent laser-ablation resistance and protected the C/C substrates from thermal damage and oxidation effectively.

Abstract:Focusing on solving the adverse laser-inducing damage problem, high-power laser-resistant strategies have attracted more attention. In order to improve the laser-resistant property, a novel dynamic porous structure generation idea for laser irradiation was presented in this study, both of high-reflection and reaction endothermic effects. A detailed investigation on phase structure change, optical properties variation, micro-structure evolution, and substrate temperature development during laser irradiation was performed. The initial reflectivity of two coatings at 1064 nm was high, around 80–90%. During laser irradiation, the reflectivity grew continuously, reaching a maximum of 93%. During laser irradiation, a skeleton porous structure formed, promoted by the endothermic reaction of aluminum tri-hydroxide, whose structure contributes to the heat insulation from surface to interior. Thus, the prepared coating showed excellent anti-laser ablation performance, being dependent on its thermal insulation by the reaction-generated porous structure; high reflectivity by surface; and heat dissipation by endothermic reaction. Under 2000 W/cm2, 10 s laser irradiation (spot area is 10 mm × 10 mm), the back-surface temperature is just 159 °C, which is far away from the melting point of aluminum substrate. The coatings and strategy mentioned in this study have a great potential to be applied in the anti-laser field.

Abstract:In order to study the damage behaviors of optical mirrors induced by film defects (as film bumps, film pits and film contaminants) in high-power CW laser, a simulation study was carried out, which considered temperature, thermal stress and thermal deformation in results. The results show that the bumps of the film will primarily absorb laser energy, and its temperature, thermal stress and thermal deformation will become extremely high, which is easy to damage the film; similarly, the film pits will also absorb laser energy for its temperature rise, and the pits will expand to the inwards. The larger the size of the pits, the larger the expansion of melting range will be, and eventually damage the film layer; after absorbing the laser energy, the temperature of the film contaminants is very high (for film contaminants size of 150 μm, its maximum temperature reaching 900 K), even exceeding the damage temperature (523 K) that the film can withstand, and finally causing the film to be ablated.

Abstract:By considering the rapid change of standing-wave electric-field and assuming the interface defect distribution, an improved model is developed to analyze the defect density distribution and assess the damage performance of high-reflective coatings. Two kinds of high-reflective coatings deposited by e-beam evaporation (EBE) and ion beam sputtering (IBS) techniques are analyzed with this method. The lower overall damage threshold is the major feature for the coatings deposited by IBS method according to the defect parameters extracted from the model. Typical damage morphologies of coatings are also measured and analyzed. The assumption of interface defects is supported by the damage behavior. The damage mechanisms of two high-reflective coatings are attributed to the formation of molten pool and mechanical ejection. The influence of the incident angle on the damage probability is also considered and numerically calculated. The defect analysis model improved here is suitable for high-reflective coatings.

Abstract:The fatigue damage behavior of antireflective coating over KDP crystal under vacuum environment was studied with varied UV-laser irradiation, and the dynamic process from initial damage to complete failure of this coating was obtained. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and slow positron beam (SPB) technique was employed to study the macro- and micro-defects in the process of evolution. The formation of non-bridging oxygen (NBO) and the variation of O/Si ratio along the direction of coating depth were obtained during the damage process based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The idea that oxygen with low binding energy absorbs UV light and produces oxygen defects to induce damage was put forward, and the damage mechanism of sol-gel antireflective coating under UV-laser irradiation was given.

Abstract:Anti-laser damage has become a major concern because of the rapid evolution of high power continuous-wave laser technology. While phenolic matrix composite coatings exhibit good anti-laser property, they show low reflectivity during laser irradiation, resulting in high energy absorption. A novel composite coating that consists of Al(OH)3 and nano-copper fillers with phenolic resin matrix has been designed to solve the low reflectivity problem. X-ray diffraction reveals that Al2O3 particles generate on the surface of the coating during laser irradiation because of the dehydration reaction of Al(OH)3. The endothermic effect of this dehydration reaction and the transpiration of nano-copper particles have a significant cooling effect on the coating. The reflectivity of coating is monitored in real time during laser irradiation. It is confirmed that the reflectivity gradually increases with the accumulation of Al2O3 particles. According to the temperature of back-surface substrates, the improved reflectivity does lead to a better anti-laser property of the coating. The laser ablation behavior of the composite coating was studied in detail through different laser parameters. The results show that both laser power density and irradiation time have effect on the micro-morphologies and reflectivity of the coating.Graphic abstract
