Abstract:This paper compares and analyzes the insulation structure of the vacuum interrupter, focusing on the influence of the mechanical characteristics and the structure of the shield on the insulation, and establishes an electric field calculation model for the axisymmetric structure of the vacuum interrupter. Finally, the radius of the conductive rod and the thickness of the contact are compared and optimized, and then the thickness of the shield is compared and calculated, and then simulated and analyzed with ANSYS software to verify the optimization direction.

Abstract:Here,we addressed the relationship between the shield potential and the internal pressure of the vacuum circuit breaker in the three phases of the pressure building-up,based on electromagnetic theory,gas discharge theory,and the published results in the literature.The dependence of pressure on the dielectric constant of the residue gases was evaluated.The shield potential,especially when the pressure in the vacuum interrupter is lower than 0.1 Pa,was modeled,approximated,and calculated in three-dimension finite element method.The calculated results show that in the pressure range below 0.1 Pa,as the pressure increases,the A.C.shield potential increases with an amplitude up to 2 V;whereas at a pressure above 0.1Pa,the shield potential turns into a D.C.potential.
Research on Contact Structure in Vacuum Interrupter for DC Breaking Capability

Abstract:The fast DC vacuum circuit breaker is required that the vacuum interrupter can not only break large current within several milliseconds, but also guarantee the required mechanical life under the condition that the mechanical impact is much larger than that of the AC vacuum interrupter. This paper investigates the DC breaking capability of three typical vacuum interrupters with axial magnetic field contact structure without slots, with radial slots and with parallel slots by simulation. And the current breaking capability of contacts without slots is proved by prototype test. A test circuit and a method for current breaking capability of fast switchgears are proposed. The research results can provide technical reference for the engineering application of fast DC vacuum switchgears.

Abstract:As the core device of vacuum circuit breaker, the insulation performance of the interrupter is closely related to the internal structure. In this paper, the electric field distribution of arc interrupter under simulated lightning impulse overvoltage is studied. It is found that the instantaneous electric field intensity is at a high level and the electric field uniformity is poor under lightning impulse. In order to further improve the electric field distribution of the interrupter, this paper proposes a method based on the combination of neural network and particle swarm optimization (PSO) to optimize the important structural parameters of the interrupter. A neural network model was established with suspension shield length (L1), suspension shield radius (R1), end shield radius (R2), contact plate thickness (H1) and end shield length (H2) as inputs, and the maximum electric field strength and the uniformity of electric field on both sides of the static and dynamic contacts as outputs, respectively. The structure of the vacuum interrupter was optimized by PSO algorithm. The optimization results show that: When the structural parameters of the vacuum interrupter H1 are 4.6 mm, H2 is 20 mm, R1 is 3.6 mm, R2 is 3.4 mm and L1 is 110 mm, the electric field distribution of the interrupter is obviously improved, and the electric field distribution of the optimized structure can also be well improved under the power frequency operating voltage. Its electric field intensity between the electrode is significantly low. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

High Voltage Vacuum Interrupters; Technical and Physical Feasibility versus Economical Efficiency

Abstract:Tn the medium voltage range the vacuum switching principle is well established (Fink and Renz, 2002). Today vacuum circuit breakers are available up to 52 kV rated voltage and 80 kA short-circuit current. By using a series arrangement of two or more vacuum interrupters it is basically possible to double or multiply the dielectric strength without increasing the operating energy substantially. Applications with two 24 kV or 36 kV standard vacuum interrupters in series for rated voltages of 52kV or 72kV are well known. In principle there is no restriction on the medium voltage range for single vacuum interrupters. Tubes for 72kV and even 145kV applications are described by several manufacturers. However due to a nearly square-root dependence between the dielectric strength and the contact stroke it is not trivial to find acceptable solutions. Concerning environmentally aspects also the external insulation of the interrupter causes problems. SF6 is well established in compact gas-insulated switchgears (GTS). Of course designs for air-insulated switchgears (AIS) are possible. But adequate solutions have to be found. Another issue to be considered is the interrupting capability. The dependence on contact stroke for conventional contact systems may limit short circuit current interrupting capability. The higher the stroke the lower the maximum current, which can be proper, interrupted. Increasing of the contact diameter ad infinitum is useless. Switching capacitors is the next technical challenge. On one side a dielectric sufficient stroke is necessary, on the other side increasing contact gap reduces the interrupting capability. Overvoltages produced by switching inductances also deserve closer attentions. Common contact materials for medium voltage vacuum interrupters are maybe not suited for low surge behaviour in high voltage devices. Together with the electrical items the mechanical stability of the interrupter has not to be sneezed at. The endurance of the bellows and housing as well as the bending and upsetting of the conduction bolts demand high sophisticated engineering. In spite of all the technical problems proper solutions up to 72kV were developed in the past and 145kV-bottles with a single interrupter gap are possible. The main handicap against the introduction of vacuum technology into the high voltage domain is obviously the economical efficiency. Well established technologies and production facilities enable cost-effective products today. A decision pro vacuum is possible for high voltage applications as recently as technical and commercial solutions are available

Abstract:DC Vacuum Circuit Breakers based arc control has been a major topic in the last few decades. Understanding vacuum arc (VA) gives the ability to improve vacuum circuit breakers capacity. In this paper, the interaction of a DC vacuum arc with a combined Axial-Radial magnetic field was investigated. The proposed system contains an external coil to produce axial magnetic field (AMF) across the vacuum chamber. The vacuum interrupter (VI) contacts were assumed to be untreated radial magnetic field (RMF) contacts. For this purpose, Finite Element Method (FEM) based Multiphysics simulation of the immerging magnetic field influence on the VA is presented. The simulation shown the ability of the presented system to deflect high DC vacuum arc, also reveals that the vacuum arc interruption capability increases with the rise of the axial component of the magnetic field. Simulation results shown that this method can be applied to improve the interruption capability of the VI.
Breakdown of shield gaps in vacuum interrupters

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to determine how the high-voltage discharging metal vapour deposited on the nearby ceramic inner surface influences the breakdowns of gaps between centre shield and end shield in vacuum interrupters. Two types of shield materials were selected, namely copper and stainless steel. The end curvature radius of the shield was 3 mm. The distance between the shields could adjust manually from 4 to 8 mm. The distance between the shields and ceramic was 3.5 mm. The negative polarity standard lightning impulse voltage (12/50 μs) was repeated for 900 operations based on an up-and-down method. The experimental results illustrated that the metal deposition layer on the inner surface of the ceramic envelope significantly influenced the breakdown voltage of the shield gaps. At a shield gap distance of d = 4 mm, the breakdown voltage of the shield gap increased from an initial lower voltage to the saturation voltage by approximately 200 operations. Then, the breakdown voltage decreased to a lower voltage range during only 50 operations, and the breakdown voltage maintained at this lower voltage range until the end of 900 operations. Furthermore, as the shield gap distance increased from d = 4 to 6 mm and 8 mm, the breakdown voltage also maintained at this lower voltage range. A metal deposition layer was formed on the inner surface of ceramic by repetitive application of the lightning impulse voltage. To analyse the influence of the metal deposition layer, the electric field distributions were calculated for the original vacuum interrupter and the vacuum interrupter with the metal deposition layer on the ceramic inner surface. The simulation results suggested that the metal deposition layer took part in the breakdown path between the shield gaps and deteriorated the insulation performance.

Abstract:In order to design and improve the 72.5 kV high voltage vacuum interrupter, its static electric field is calculated and optimized by ANASY software and genetic algorithm so as to uniform the electric field distribution and minimize the electric field intensity in the vacuum interrupter interior. As a result, the configuration of the 72.5 kV vacuum interrupter is improved, and the calculation results show that genetic algorithm has good flexibility and validity.

Abstract:The vacuum interrupter is the core component of the DC circuit breaker to ensure the vacuum arc is extinguished reliably. The objective of this paper is to propose a method for extinguishing a DC vacuum arc directly by using an over 400 mT uniform unidirectional transverse magnetic field (TMF). The TMF is generated by an annular Halbach array consisting of 8 permanent magnets. The evolution process and interruption characteristics of the DC vacuum arc under Halbach TMF are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the whole interruption process consists of two stages, namely, the stable stage and the unstable stage. The stable stage corresponds to the stagnation and aggregation of cathode spots, and the unstable stage corresponds to the arc motion and reignition. The arc motion and reignition lead to the irregular oscillation of the arc voltage. Meanwhile, lateral movement of the arc followed by a fall at the edge of the contacts is the key to the rapid drop in current. It is found that a large arc current leads to a long duration of the stable stage, while the critical current is proportional to the contact separating distance. The experimental results show that the DC interruption capacity of the vacuum interrupter under the Halbach TMF exceeds 500 V/ 830 A, 700 V/ 660 A, and 1200 V/ 370 A, respectively. At last, two topologies based on Halbach TMF vacuum interrupter for DC interruption are proposed, and their future applications in mechanical/ hybrid DC circuit breakers are discussed.

Abstract:Fast isolating switch is one of the key components of Hybrid DC circuit breaker. It is difficult for conventional breakers to provide such a fast operating speed when the switching time is within a few milliseconds. In this paper, based on the study of the vacuum switch, focusing on the application of small vacuum gap in DC isolation, arcless breaking situation, a series of experiments were designed. After solving the problems of synchronous as well as voltage distribution in every break, a 200kV DC fast isolating switch with less than 3ms switching time is developed, And through the whole test of DC circuit breaker.
A Fast LVDC Vacuum Hybrid Circuit Breaker: Dielectric Recovery and Design Consideration

Abstract:Aiming at the fast protection requirements of electrical ships LVDC distribution system, this paper studies a topology of unidirectional vacuum hybrid circuit breaker. The hybrid circuit breaker is an improved current injection LVDC breaker based on precharged capacitor, which improves the dielectric recovery capability of vacuum interrupter after artificial current zero by using a freewheel diode. A synthetic test platform is built to study the dielectric strength recovery characteristics of a 45 mm diameter CuCr50 butt contact vacuum interrupter (driven by Thomson coil actuator, average opening speed of about 3 m/s)under high current(about 20 kA) and small gap(about 1 mm). The experimental results indicate that the dielectric strength of the contact can recover at a very fast speed within the arc time of 100 mu s; when the arc time is increased to 320 mu s, the dielectric strength of the contact cannot recover for a long time. Therefore, the design principle of the circuit breaker is obtained: within the arc time of 100 mu s, by increasing the arc time can increase the contact distance, so the transient interruption voltage tolerance margin of the circuit breaker can be improved. Based on the results of the test, this paper also proposes a calculation method of forced commutation circuit parameters, which is verified by the simulation. The research results show that the DC circuit breaker can realise the rapid breaking of 20 kA fault current within 2 ms, and has a good application prospect in the LVDC distribution system.

Abstract:This paper introduces the development history of vacuum circuit breakers. According to the low reliability of the vacuum circuit breakers with single opening and closing coil, this paper proposes a new type of 10kV quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils. This new type circuit breaker has two opening and closing coils, which together act on the metal disc of the circuit breaker to ensure the reliability. Then, the electromagnetic repulsion force of the metal disk is deduced using the equivalent calculation method. On this basis, mathematical analysis and calculation are performed on the electromagnetic repulsion of the circuit breaker's metal disc. Thereby the reliablity of the quick vacuum circuit breaker with double opening and closing coils is proved.

Abstract:The present state of knowledge concerning the physical phenomena of high-current interruption with vacuum interrupters (VI) is reviewed. Two arc control methods, application of externally applied axial magnetic field (AMF) or transverse magnetic field (TMF), are available to distribute the heat flux from arc to contacts homogeneously over contact surface, to avoid local overheating. AMF spreads the arc at fixed location. TMF moves the constricted arc over contact surface. Change from diffuse to constricted arcing mode results from superposition of two effects: “instability of anode sheath” and “influence of magneto-gas-dynamic,” when no AMF component exists. Conditions of arc memory at current zero determine the process of current extinction and of recovery of breakdown strength to its ultimate value. Evaporation of metal vapor continues. Charge exchange between fast ions and slow vapor atoms increases the residual charge, left in the switching gap at current zero. Post arc current prolongs and increases consequently. Breakdown during recovery of dielectric strength occurs instantaneously or sporadically delayed. Behavior of breakdown is essentially determined by vapor density. Breakdown mechanism of delayed breakdown is still unresolved. Vapor density is too low to initiate breakdown alone. Lack of fundamental knowledge in combination with complexity hampers numerical treatment of arc behavior, as well as heat flux to contact during arcing and process of interruption presently, as needed for interpretation of experimental results and prediction purposes.

Abstract:The use of vacuum interrupters (VIs) as the current interruption component for switches, circuit breakers, reclosers and contactors operating at distribution voltages has escalated since their introduction in the mid-1950’s. This electrical product has developed a dominating position for switching and protecting distribution circuits. VIs are even being introduced into switching products operating at transmission voltages. Among the reasons for the VI’s popularity are its compactness, its range of application, its low cost, its superb electrical and mechanical life and its ease of application. Its major advantage is its well-established reliability. In this paper we show how this reliability has been achieved by design, by mechanical life testing and by electrical performance testing. We introduce the “sealed for life” concept for the VI’s integrity. We discuss this in terms of what is meant by a practical leak rate for VIs with a life of over 30 years. We show that a simple high voltage withstand test is an easy and effective method for monitoring the long-term vacuum integrity. Finally we evaluate the need for routine inspection of this electrical product when it is used in adverse ambient environments.

Current distribution and power loss within the sliding contact structure of vacuum circuit breaker

Abstract:Power loss and Temperature rise are key characteristics which must be considered carefully when designing a high voltage circuit breaker. In this paper, a model for a whole sliding contact structure used in a high voltage vacuum circuit breaker has been created. It is composed by an inner cylinder conductor, an outer tube conductor and 2-4 rows of sliding contacts between the former two conductors. Current distribution, resistance and power loss features of the whole structure have been analyzed by Finite Element Method (FEM) software. The influences of different geometric and electric parameters have been considered thoughtfully based on current skin effect, including the radius of inner cylinder conductor, the thickness of outer tube conductor, the overtop length of outer tube conductor, the spacing between contacts, the equal resistivity of sliding contact, and the number of contacts rows. Furthermore, some suggestions on selecting parameters to reduce the resistance and power loss of the whole structure have been pointed out. For copper and structure assigned, 11 mm is the optimal thickness of outer tube conductor, more than 35 mm should be chosen as the radius of inner cylinder conductor, and it will be better to reduce other dimensions.

Abstract:This paper briefly reviews the evolution of vacuum circuit breaker (VCB) and vacuum interrupter (VI) technology from the early days up to the present day, and then looks at future trends and applications for the technology. The paper starts with a simple overview of the basic principles which both provide the excellent performance of vacuum interrupters in switching current, and which are also responsible for the limitations of this technology. The next section is a brief review of how VI & VCB technology has developed over the past 60 years and has been applied in circuit breakers up to the present day. Finally, future requirements and applications are discussed together with the strengths and weaknesses of the technology in meeting these new challenges.

Abstract:This paper introduces a research work on the development of high-voltage (HV) vacuum circuit breakers (VCBs) in China from its start point 1989 to 2006. In this period, a 126-kV two breaks VCB prototype and a 126-kV single break VCB prototype were developed. A latest 252-kV single break interrupter prototype is introduced. Five HV VCBs technologies are discussed, which include HV vacuum insulation, high current interrupting technology with long contact gaps, increasing nominal current, operating mechanism characteristics, and contact bouncing damping. In vacuum insulation, adding a metal ring at electrode back can decrease breakdown possibilities in the gap between the electrode back and main shield. Surface melting layer of contact material could have influence on voltage withstanding capability of a vacuum gap. For interrupting high current with long contact gaps, strong axial magnetic field (AMF) is needed for a better vacuum arc control. Therefore, a single coil AMF electrode is introduced. Heat radiators are effective to increase nominal current of VCBs. Thermal analysis can help to give appropriate design parameters. There is an optimum opening characteristic that is helpful to improve the interrupting performance of VCBs. Permanent magnet operating mechanism and spring-type operating mechanism are suitable for HV VCBs. Contact bouncing in HV VCBs can be damped by installing contact spring and bellows on stationary end of VCBs.

Abstract:To understand the effect of rabbet assembly position of moving and static contacts on performance of vacuum interrupter,simulation and experimental methods were employed to analyze the performance of a vacuum interrupter with different rabbet assembly position,and the effects of rabbet assembly position on magnetic flux density and arc pattern were obtained.The results showed that when the dislocation degree of rabbet was 45°,the maximum value of magnetic flux density was 63.71,64.31 and 64.18 mT,respectively;the arc had smaller size,more stable movement,and the voltage of 36 V;and the interruption performance of the vacuum interrupter was better.So it is concluded that the interruption performance of the vacuum interrupter can be improved at 45° dislocation of rabbet in assembly.

Abstract:The medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) distribution grids have been given significant attention because of their wide applications in the grid integration of the renewable energy sources and in the improvement of the stability and quality of the grid. However, due to the absence of the natural zero current crossings and the high rate of the short-circuit current, the fault current interruption in the MVDC systems is more problematic than that in the ac systems. Several types of interruption schemes have been proposed, and the vacuum interrupter-based dc circuit breaker (DCCB) is a promising solution for the MVDC interruption. Because of its high arcing current, the dielectric strength of the vacuum interrupter after the current crossing point stays low, which makes the dielectric recovery strength a critical factor for the reliability of the interruption. To estimate the reliability of the MVDC interruption, an experimental circuit is designed to measure the dielectric recovery strength of the vacuum interrupter, and the main influence factors are investigated with the experiments conducted under different arcing currents, contacts, $di/{Delta t}$ before the current zero, and arcing times. The analysis and comparison of the dielectric recovery strength under different conditions are presented. The safe recovery time under different interruption conditions is proposed.

Application of arc breaking simulation in development of extra high voltage SF6 circuit breaker

Abstract:During the short-circuit current breaking of the ultra-high voltage SF 6 circuit breaker, it needs to withstand a very high transient recovery voltage after the current zero time, which requires the interrupter to have a very strong breaking capacity. In this paper, the arc simulation method is used to simulate the L90 test process of the SF 6 circuit breaker design prototype, and the pressure, temperature and Mach number distributions of the interrupter at the current zero time are obtained. The study found that there is a shock wave in front of the static arc contact inside the nozzle, which causes high-temperature gas to be dissipated between the fractures, which may cause the failure of the interruption. According to the simulation results and design experience, an improvement proposal for the arc extinguishing chamber is proposed for this design structure defect, and the simulation calculation is used to verify it. The calculation results show that the improved interrupter scheme has no shock wave at the front end of the static arc contact, and the improved scheme has achieved the expected results, providing support for subsequent type tests.
