Abstract:Gas film seal technology is becoming increasingly important as an advanced new rotary shaft seal technology in aviation engines and industrial gas turbines. In this paper the impacts of several parameters of T-groove cylindrical gas seal such as groove number, groove depth, groove width ratio, dam groove width ratio and floating ring length on the steady-state characteristics of cylinder film seal are studied in detail by the method of control variable using computational fluid dynamics software, and the focuses are on the pressure distribution, the gas film stiffness, and the leakage. Results show that with the increase of the number of grooves, the gas film stiffness increases gradually, but the leakage and leakage stiffness ratio decrease. The results also show that with the increase of groove depth, there is a maximum value for the gas film stiffness and a minimum value forleakage. This research plays an important role in guiding the design and the application of cylindrical gas seal.

Designated H2Pro, they have been developed to meet the challenges of hydrogen production, transportation and storage, and end use. Here we provide further details of two specific materials in the range, discuss their properties and look at how they can be used.
Investigation into Replacement of Viton ‘O’-Rings

Abstract:Abstract — Fluorocarbon ‘O’-rings to DTD5612A:1982 have been used for many years for sealing at −40°C. The UK Department for Transport (DfT) issued a letter on 12 March 2001 raising concerns over the suitability of these ‘O’-rings for service temperatures down to −40°C as required by the regulations for certain types of packages containing radioactive material, and requested that the technical justification for continued use was reviewed. Gravatom Engineering Systems Ltd performed a low-temperature test, at Harwell, using design no 3406 with new fluorocarbon ‘O’-rings and bolts. The test proved that these ‘O’-rings are not suitable for temperatures down to −40°C since the seals would not hold a vacuum at temperatures lower than −24°C. This necessitated an investigation to find a suitable ‘O’-ring material with a leak rate pelformance of 10−5 Pa.m3. s−1 SLR at −40°C to +330°C since this represents the widest temperature range of the AWE Type B(U) containers. Various seal manufacturers were contacted, and following further investigation two seal materials presented themselves as possible options: Viton GLT, a fluorocarbon manufactured by Parker-USA (Parker compound V0835–75) with CEETAK Ltd acting as agents in the UK, and EPDM-30H developed by BNFL and manufactured by James Walker & Co Ltd. Following testing, the EPDM-30H seals proved to be the most suitable sealing material option for an operating temperature range of −40°C to +330°C. The seal achieved a leak rate at −40°C of better than 8.0 × 10−10 Pa.m3.s−1 which is well within the equivalent target leak rate of less than 1.2 × 10−4 Pa. m3.s−1. The seals also remained effective down to at least −50°C with no loss in sealing pelformance. A leak rate of better than 7.2 × 10−6 Pa.m3.s−1. was achieved at +330°C which is within the target leak rate of less than 6.4 × 10m−5 Pa.mm3.s−1. The interspace pressure increased slightly during heating, but recovered fully on cooling to give a leak rate at ambient temperature of 1.0 × 10−10 Pa.mm3.s−1. The EPDM-30H seals proved satisfactory at high temperature, with excellent recovery on cooling. It was concluded that EPDM-30H seals may be used as a direct replacement for Viton where the temperature range does not exceed −40°C to +330°C and where the higher temperature of that range is of relatively short duration (i.e. less than 24 h).

Abstract:This paper surveys common gasket materials and construction types evaluated against sealing conditions. The end-user often asks the question, “Which type of gasket should I use for this application?” While much attention has been recently focused on temperature/pressure performance, other end-user concerns include whether or not a particular joint is capable of achieving a desired leakage range (e.g., tightness) and how well a gasket may compensate for some non-ideal flange issues. Different gasket materials/constructions are more forgiving than others. Selected gaskets often used in the chemical process industry will be compared for minimum gasket seating stress to achieve various tightness levels, the required “chemical service tightness” gasket stress against the “max out” component stress for a typical joint, and associated gasket compression. This paper compares ASME Class 150 NPS 3” and 4” joints using gaskets of various materials and constructions. Materials include fiber, filled and expanded PTFEs, flexible vermiculite, and flexible graphites. Construction types include sheet-based rings, spiral wounds, groove-profiles, and corrugated metal. Comparing typical stress and compression ranges for the various materials and constructions will help the end-user learn to narrow the selection of available gaskets and achieve a more economical bolted joint design.
Characteristics of a taper-seal type gasket for the Conflat® sealing system

Abstract:Disk (flat ring) gaskets are commonly employed in conjunction with the ConFlat® metal sealing system. The use of the disk gasket, however, limits the seal performance on the ConFlat system because considerable tightening force is wasted in the sealing process when the flange knife edge cleaves the surfaces of the disk gasket. The taper-seal type gasket, which seals entirely by the compression of its corners without surface shearing, can be expected to improve the inefficiency of the ConFlat system relative to performance using conventional disk gaskets. Tightening tests on both gasket versions demonstrated that the seal area on the taper-seal type gasket was some 1.6–3.7 times larger than that on conventional disk gaskets, even when the taper-seal type gasket material is relatively hard. This result suggests that the tightening force acts more effectively to form a sealed area on a taper-seal gasket than a disk gasket. The two types of gaskets also differed in their stress distributions under the tightening load. Results of stress analyses using computer simulation showed that the stress concentration occurred in the conventional disk gasket around the tip of flange knife edge, and that maximum stress could be over four times larger than that seen in the taper-seal gasket. This excessively high stress in the disk gasket prevented achievement of a wide seal area, and intensified the creep of gasket materials during the baking process, this increasing the probability of leaks developing. The characteristic mode of deformation of the taper-seal gasket generates a highly stable stress distribution, virtually independent of the tightening torque; thus, good seal performance is realized, even under sever thermal cycling conditions.

Abstract:The preparation method of low-temperature resistance nitrile-butadiene rubber coat-metal sealing gasket was introduced. The type and the dosage of curing agent, reinforcing agent and other additives were considered, the optimum technological factor was determined. Use of such nitrile-butadiene rubber coat-metal sealing gasket, its low temperature resistance and oil resistance were good enough for the seals which work at -40 -160 .

Abstract:Abstract Metallic spiral-wound gasket sealing are generally applicable for the service conditions, which are subject to the periodic temperature and pressure changes, shocks or vibrations. The nominal size of the largest spiral wound gasket of flanges is according to the provisions of HG/T 20631; those more than this specification are in the scope of non-standard parts, which require customization and manufacturing. This paper aims for introducing the successful experience of the first application of customized for non-standard spiral-wound gasket sealing of the large opening flange used for pressure vessel which bears high temperature and high pressure. The paper demonstrated the basic principle and critical points for the design and application of customized non-standard spiral-wound gasket sealing for the large opening flange and provided the valuable reference of actual application experience for the design and manufacturing of similar components. This paper presents the experiences summary in the study field and provides valuable reference of actual application experience for the design and manufacturing of similar components.

Abstract:This paper reviews the material properties of the seal gaskets of shield tunnels. In order to understand the function of sealing gaskets, the significance and structure of gaskets in tunnel segments are briefly introduced. Then, the material types of gasket are presented. Gasket materials include two categories: (i) the traditional elastic gasket and (ii) the hydrophilic composite elastic gasket. The traditional elastic gasket is composed of chloroprene rubber (CR) and ethylene propylene diene rubber (EPDM), in which the sealing function is implemented as a result of the elastic properties of the materials. The hydrophilic composite elastic gasket includes vulcanized water swelling rubber (WSR) and water swelling polyurethane (WSP), in which the sealing function is obtained from both the elastic properties and the water absorption ability of the gasket material. CR and EPDM were the earliest materials used in engineering practice; however, EPDM is the main material of the gasket today. The sealing mechanism of both CR and EPDM is presented at the molecule level. After that, the water absorption process for both WSR and WSP in hydrophilic composite is reviewed. Methods to improve the sealing behavior of WSR are also summarized. Furthermore, the aging of the gasket material is discussed. Finally, perspectives for future developments of new materials or ways to improve the performance of seal gaskets are proposed.
Thermomechanical properties of zirconium tungstate/hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) composites for low-temperature applications

Abstract:Rubber compounds for pressure sealing application typically have inferior dimensional stability with temperature fluctuations compared with their steel counterparts. This effect may result in seal leakage failures when subjected to decreases in temperature. Composites of hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) and zirconium tungstate as a negative thermal expansion filler were prepared in order to control the thermal expansivity of the material. The amount of zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) was varied in the range of 0 to about 40 vol%. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), bulk modulus, uniaxial extension and compression set properties were measured. The CTE of the ZrW2O8-filled HNBR decreases with the filler content and it is reduced by a factor of 2 at the highest filler concentration used. The filler effect on CTE is found to be stronger when HNBR is below the glass transition temperature. The experimental thermal expansion data of the composites are compared with the theoretical estimates and predictions given by FEA. The effect of ZrW2O8 on the mechanical characteristics and compression set of these materials is also discussed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The low temperature sealing behaviors of five elastomer components used in aircraft hydraulic sealing systems were evaluated through a series of tests subsequent to exposure at 135 °C for a maximum of 28 days in air or hydraulic oil. These assessments encompassed standard material tests such as glass transition temperature (Tg), temperature retraction at 10% shrinkage, mechanical test, and compression set and a customized test to measure sealing force of a certain temperature. In addition, a low temperature gas leakage test was conducted. NBR stiffened upon aging with degradation of properties in an elongation loss, and Tg increased because chain mobility decreased due to increased crosslink density, and restoring force sharply decreased in cooling and in extracting plasticizer. In contrast, in the gas leakage test for both fluorocarbon rubber (FKM) and blends of epichlorohydrin with NBR (ECO), the Tg values showed good accordance, with minimal sealing temperature (Tseal), whether FKM or ECO were aged or not. However, the value of Tseal is significantly higher than that of Tg after NBR aging, indicating a complicated sealing mechanism. Thus, relying solely on standard material tests may not suffice for accurately forecasting the low temperature sealing performance in aircraft hydraulic sealing systems.

Abstract:Due to the temperature effect on material deformation and ageing, bolted flange joints operated at elevated temperature is far more difficult to seal than those at room temperature. The service temperature has been regarded as a limiting factor that affects design, operation and maintenance of the flange joint system. This paper summarized recent advances of bolted flange joints at high temperature, which include the testing set-up and measuring techniques, elevated temperature behavior of gaskets, and analysis of flange and flange-bolt systems.

Abstract:The performance of sealants based on liquid Amine-Terminated Butadiene Acrylonitrile(ATBN) and epoxy was outlined.The sealants have inherent resistance to high temperature and,in addition,exhibit high flexibility at temperatures as low as 253K due to their chemical structure the ATBN.Sealants based on this technology possess more excellent physical properties than traditional sealants such as low-molecular-weight polysulfide(Thiokols LP) sealants or silicon sealant.Dynamic mechanical analysis shows ATBN and epoxy form two phases in the sealants.The tensile strength and the ultimate elongation increase with increasing content of acrylonitrile of ATBN.Sealants based on ATBN show good properties on resistance to compression.
Temperature effect on rubber gasket under high-frequency load

Abstract:The performance degradation of rubber gaskets under vibration compression is faster than that under static load, and the degree of performance degradation will continue to increase under humidity and thermal environment. For rubber gaskets under a long-term service, the mechanical properties of rubber gaskets were measured after accelerated aging process with different temperature in the temperature box. The precipitates of rubber structures were detected by energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Molecular chain of silicon rubber gasket quickly breaks to form free radicals under high-frequency stress, which initiate oxidation chain reaction and mechanochemical process. Surface leakage of silicon (Si) and magnesium (Mg) indicates that a larger percent of macromolecular chains are broken and decomposed. High temperature activates the molecular chain cracking or cross-linking, while high-frequency stress leads to transport leakage on chain decomposition. The oxygen diffusion rate and activation oxidation reaction were accelerated by the residual stress to rubber oxidation reaction rate.

Abstract:Based on studying combination property evaluation technology of gasket,a new sealing gasket testing machine was developed.The machine uses low pressure sealing cavity to detect leakage,which has more precise than that using high pressure area.The design principle and special function of the machine were introduced.The measurement range and accuracy of leakage rate were estimated by Gauss error function.The combination properties of stainless steel-graphite spiral wound gasket and asbestos rubber gasket were tested.The experimentation indicates this tester can simulate compression resilience,creep relaxation and sealing performances of gaskets,and it can provide experimental basis for preventing leakage.

Abstract:We consider elastomer composites with fillers made of a material that exhibits negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Such fillers provide an opportunity to reduce the thermal shrinkage of the composite in cooling. It is especially relevant in sealing applications for structures operated at low temperatures. It is known that CTE of rubber is at least an order of magnitude higher than that of steel. Due to this fact, an elastomer seal compressed in its groove may lose interference with the mating steel surface upon temperature drop and, thus, form a leak path for the contained fluids like hydrocarbons. In the present paper we start with estimates of the contact pressure drop in a typical O-ring rubber seal caused by cooling. Then we investigate how the volume fraction and the shape of filler particles affect thermo-elastic properties and the sealing performance of the composite. We demonstrate that the contact pressure drop due to freezing down to -60∘C$${-}60\,^{\circ }\hbox {C}$$ can be reduced twice in the case of spherical inclusions, and the effect can be significantly enhanced by changing the shape of the filler particles. Finally, having in mind the strain fracture criterion, we estimate local strains at the interface between elastomer and filler considering various shapes of the filler particles.

High-Temperature Encapsulation Materials for Power Modules: Technology and Future Development Trends

Abstract:The applications of wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors represented by silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) in power modules are currently limited by the thermal stability of encapsulation materials, especially when operating temperatures raising to 200 °C or above. According to their glass transition temperatures (Tgs), the typical encapsulation materials are commonly divided into two categories: hard encapsulation materials (Tg > highest operating temperature) represented by epoxy (EP) resins and soft encapsulation materials (Tg < lowest operating temperature) represented by silicone gels (SGs). However, both materials face reliability challenges under high working temperatures (over 200 °C). In this work, recent progress for EPs and SGs was first discussed with Tgs and coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs), respectively. When considering EPs, their Tgs are usually around 150 °C, which is not sufficient enough for applications above 200 °C, while, for SGs, since they employ over Tgs, their high CTEs are not comparable with chips and other packaging materials, which leads to CTE mismatches for power modules’ packaging. Therefore, a list of materials with high Tgs and proper CTEs was concluded for both academia research interests and industrial applications. High Tg polymers were introduced, including the EP-cyanate ester blend system, phthalonitrile, and bio-based polymers. Furthermore, innovative materials, including cement, glass, and insulating liquids, were also discussed. This article is established as a guideline for developing high-temperature encapsulation materials that offer a wide range of choices of materials and related selection criteria.

Abstract:Bolted flanged joints play a crucial role in connecting pressure vessels and piping systems. The corrosion of the flange surface is one of the most common causes of leakage failure in bolted flanged joints. This research investigates the effect of three gasket materials on the corrosion behavior of 321 stainless steel flange material using a novel setup specially designed for corrosion quantification of such assemblies. The results show that graphite gaskets cause more corrosion to flange surfaces under the same working conditions compared to graphite gaskets with metal foil inserts and virgin polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gaskets. The mechanism of flange face corrosion is that, for PTFE gaskets, corrosion propagation mainly occurs at the gasket inner diameter and propagates through the depth of the flange while, for graphite gaskets, corrosion occurs on the whole contact surface of the flange and the gasket.

Abstract:Reciprocating seals are key components that affect the safety and reliability of hydraulic systems. This paper establishes a thermo-elastohydrodynamic (TEHD) model of Glyd-ring combined seals and reveals the macro and micro characteristics in a wide temperature range. Specifically, the TEHD model considers the changes in material and hydraulic oil parameters with temperature, and the parameter values at different temperatures are obtained through actual measurements. During the iterative calculation process of the TEHD model, parameters such as seal size, material, and hydraulic oil are constantly updated according to temperature changes. This paper also proposes a method to optimize the sealing performance of Glyd-ring seals by reducing the root mean square roughness.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of lubrication, oxidation and expatiation of seal unit using in heat extraction of oil at high temperature, Ag/graphite composites seal rings are used. The seal rings were prepared by high pressure-infiltration method. The influence of this method upon the performance of seal ring was discussed by using Gribbs' theory. The energy spectrum and microstructure of Ag/graphite composites were studied and observed by SEM, indicating that the surface elements are composed of Ag, C, 0 and S. There are only C elements under the surface of the ring and the structure is parallel slices. The no-loading test, cold test and high temperature test were made to certify the effect of seal rings. The result is that there was nearly no leaking in the system under 25 MPa at 350 degrees.

Abstract:Abstract A highly hydrophobic sealing material system has been developed using high-temperature melt-quenching and sintering technologies for harsh environmental electrical connector package sealing applications. The sealing material properties can be varied by its phase structures, such as amorphous glass, crystalline monoclinic and tetragonal mixed phase, and covalent bond tetragonal phase, which are determined by a two-stage synthesizing process. The dilatometer measurements have found that the ambient coefficient of thermal expansion varies from ~5.8 to 7.1 ppm/°C while the coefficient of thermal expansion at its glass transition temperatures varies from ~7.0 to 9.0 ppm/°C. These coefficients of thermal expansion could provide not only wide options for integrating metal materials, such as Ti-alloy, Kovar, Inconel alloys, and Stainless Steels for making reliable electrical connector packages, but also enable the design of electrical connector packages with a safety factor of 3 performance, operable at 30KSI (30,000 PSI) pressure, and −100 −300°C harsh conditions while maintaining at least 5,000MΩ insulation resistances, for reliable signal, data, and electrical power transmissions.
