Abstract:<p>The development and application of white light‐emitting diode (WLED) lighting technology are of great significance for reducing energy consumption. Commonly used WLED devices rely on the use of rare earth luminescent materials. However, rare earth elements are nonrenewable resources, and mining and refining processes have an adverse impact on the environment. In recent years, new white light‐emitting luminescent materials that do not contain rare earth elements have been developed, such as quantum dots, fluorescent carbon dots, perovskite luminescent materials, organic luminescent materials, and metal–organic framework materials, among others, some of which are successfully applied in the development of WLEDs. Herein the latest progress in this research field is reviewed, analyzing the construction of practical WLED devices and comparing the characteristics of newly developed rare earth‐free luminescent materials. Last, the future development prospects in this field are described.</p>

Abstract:Rare-earth luminescent material is a new functional material with great potential.The properties and ap- plications of the rare-earth luminescent materials are introduced in this paper.The main preparation methods including high- temperature solid-state,chemical co-precipitation,burning technique,gas reaction,hydrothermal synthesis and microwave for rare-earth luminescent materials are summarized.The activating theories of rare-earth ions on the luminescent materials are discussed.The prospects for this field are pointed out.A new type of yellow fluorescent luminescent material(SrAl_2O_4)with Ce~(3+) and Tb~(3+) as activators,which shows excellent luminescence property,is successfully synthesized by high-temperature burning method.

Abstract:Light-emitting devices based on MgxZn1-xO/ZnO:RE/Si heterostructures are proposed. Hot holes formed in MgxZn1-xO layers enter into ZnO:RE layers to impact-excite the RE3+ ions therein. From the devices using ZnO:RE (Eu, Er and Tm) films, electroluminescence in red, green, blue, and also optical-communication wavelengths are achieved. Such RE-related electroluminescence can be activated by extraordinarily low voltages of only several volts. Abstract:Rare-earth-based nanoparticles are currently attracting wide research interest in material science, physics, chemistry, medicine, and biology due to their optical properties, their stability, and novel applications. We present in this review a summarized overview of the general and recent developments in their synthesis and functionalization. Their luminescent properties are also discussed, including the latest advances in the enhancement of their emission luminescence. Some of their more relevant and novel biomedical, analytical, and optoelectronic applications are also commented on.

Abstract:Rare earth activated nanophosphors have attracted extensive attention because of their potential applications in lighting,display and fluorescence bio-label,and also of their elementary importance on understanding of the 4fN electronic transition properties of rare earth ions in nanosized particles.In the latest ten years,a great number of improvements have been achieved in this field.In this review article,we mainly present some important research results on photoluminescence properties of rare earth doped oxide nanophosphors.The contents concern exciton and charge transfer transitions,symmetry sites and local environments surrounding rare earth ions,radiative transition and nonradiative relaxation processses on 4fN states,temprature-quenching and concentration-quenching of luminescence,energy transfer among rare earths,electron-phonon coupling,ultravoilet irradiation induced spectral change and etc.Besides,the luminescence properties of rare earth actived one-dimensional oxide nanowires(tubes,rods)and upconversion nanophosphors were introduced independently.It is expected that more universal conclusions relative to nanoparticle size and structure on the photoluminescence of rare earth actived nanoparticles can be drawn,however,it should be noted that some results introduced here might be still controversal,because some photoluminescence properties depend strongly on the preparation technique and detailed conditions.

Abstract:Rare earth doped upconversion nanolum nescent materials (UCNP) can convert low-frequency photons into high-frequency photons, usually near-infrared light excitation and visible light emission. This unique optical property makes it promising for biological applications. In recent years, UCNPs have made significant progress in the imaging and sensing fields. This paper reviews the important progress in synthesis, surface modification, and bioassay using UCNPs, covering important advances in biological detection, and including upconversion fluorescence-based temperature, ions, small molecules, and important proteins and nucleic acids.

Abstract:This chapter mainly focuses on the fundamental principles of rare earth luminescence, which are important for the investigation of the photofunctional rare earth hybrid materials. It introduces the rare earth elements and their physiochemical properties, the atomic spectral term and energy level transition of rare earth ions associated with their electronic configuration, and the luminescence and spectroscopy of rare earth ions, rare earth inorganic compounds for phosphors, rare earth coordination compounds for molecular luminescence, and photofunctional rare earth hybrid materials combining the characteristics of both phosphor and molecular luminescence. This chapter provides a basis to understand the contents of the subsequent chapters.
Rare-earth Doped Optical Spectral Conversion Materials with Their Applications

Abstract:Based on the research work carried out in our laboratory in recent years, we focus on three categories of rare-earth doped spectral conversion materials, i.e., red phosphor for white-LED lighting, near-infrared downconversion materials and upconversion nanosized biological fluorescent labeling materials. Our work on the red phosphor for white-LED has been mainly focused on Eu3+ doped materials, and the energy transfer from sensitizers to Eu3+ ions is investigated in order to enhance the efficiency under the excitation of near-ultraviolet light. For the purpose of enhancing the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells, we have carried out the studies on near-infrared downconversion materials based on stepwise and cooperative energy transfer mechanisms and have clarified the downconversion mechanisms in NaYF4:Ho3+, Yb3+ and YVO4:Yb3+ materials. Biological fluorescent labeling is another important application of luminescent materials, which has some stringent requirements on the materials, such as the nanoparticle size, water-solubility, non-toxicity and luminescent efficiency. In our recent work, core/shell NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+(Tm3+)/NaYF4 UCNPs have been successfully synthesized and transferred to aqueous phase by coating a cross-linked PMAO polymer. The cross-linked core/shell nanoparticles are very stable for several days, and are successfully internalized into human prostate cancer cells, which substantiates the utility of these nanoparticles in biolabeling applications. To sum up, due to significant existing and potential applications in biological and chemical sensing, new energy resources, energy saving and environmental protection, rare-earth doped spectral conversion materials have been attracting extensive attention. The future of rare-earth doped optical spectral conversion materials would be bright.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern technology and information systems, optical anti-counterfeiting and encryption have recently attracted considerable attention. The demand for optical materials is also constantly increasing, with new requirements proposed for performance and application fields. Currently, rare earth ion doped materials possess a unique electronic layer structure, underfilled 4f5d electronic configuration, rich electronic energy level, and long-life excited state, which can produce a variety of radiation absorption and emission. The distinctive properties of rare earth are beneficial for using in diverse optical output anti-counterfeiting. Design is essential for rare earth ion doped materials with multiple responsiveness and multi-channel optical information anti-counterfeiting in the field of information security. Therefore, this mini review summarizes the luminescent mechanisms, preparation methods, performance characteristics and anti-counterfeiting application of rare earth doped materials. In addition, we discuss some critical challenges in this field, and potential solutions that have been or are being developed to overcome these challenges.

Abstract:Scintillation materials have been widely used in the fields of high energy physics,nuclear medical imaging,industrial non-destructive testing,security inspection at ports,geological exploration and space exploration.The scintillation materials activated with trivalent rare-earth ions with allowed 5d-4f transition have high light yield and fast decay properties and become an important part of the inorganic scintillation materials.Higher and higher imaging resolutions were required by the above application fields,especial in the nuclear medical imaging,therefore,the detector instruments have higher requirements for the scintillation materials which is key material of detector.Recently,eutectic scintillation materials with well-organized micro-pixels,which can significantly improve the imaging resolution in the detection for high-energy ray,have received special attentions.This work summarized the forming mechanism of well-organized micro-nano structure in eutectic scintillation materials and the effect on the properties of scintillation materials,then reviewed the research progress of rare-earth eutectic scintillation materials from the aspects of preparation,performance optimization and application.

Abstract:Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely investigated as light emitting materials in bio-imaging and sensing, solid state lighting and display, anti-fake tags and light conversion films, due to their characterized photophysical properties including large Stokes shift, long lifetime, and sharp emission spectrum, arising from the sensitized f - f transitions. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in luminescent lanthanide complexes and their applications from 2015 to August 2017 concerning of general concepts to potential applications. We first introduce the basic concept of sensitized luminescence of lanthanide complexes and the strategies used for highly luminescent complexes. Then recent varieties of luminescent lanthanide complexes and their hybrid materials are presented. Finally, applications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:As a special kind of luminescent material, rare earth complexes have attracted great interest throughout the world owing to their peculiarities of their luminescent properties and potential application in full-color flat panel displays. In this article, we clarified the design and synthesis of novel rare earth europium and terbium complexes in recent years, and the optimization of electroluminescent devices based on rare earth europium and terbium complexes. Several helpful methods in enhancing electroluminescence properties of rare earth complexes were summarized. The new applications of europium, terbium and gadolinium complexes as sensitizer in organic electroluminescent devices were also emphatically introduced. The results showed that the application of rare earth complexes as sensitizer can realize the complementary advantages of rare earth complexes and transition metal complexes, thus improving the performances of organic electroluminescent devices. These provide a new way for design and optimization of new high-performance organic electroluminescent devices.
