Abstract:Precious and rare elements have traditionally dominated inorganic photophysics and photochemistry, but now we are witnessing a paradigm shift toward cheaper and more abundant metals. Even though emissive complexes based on selected first-row transition metals have long been known, recent conceptual breakthroughs revealed that a much broader range of elements in different oxidation states are useable for this purpose. Coordination compounds of V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu now show electronically excited states with unexpected reactivity and photoluminescence behavior. Aside from providing a compact survey of the recent conceptual key advances in this dynamic field, our Perspective identifies the main design strategies that enabled the discovery of fundamentally new types of 3d-metal-based luminophores and photosensitizers operating in solution at room temperature.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

To realise state‐of‐the‐art lamps, TV sets, monitors, and medical scanners, took an enormous scientific and technical effort. Inorganic luminescent materials are key components, which were, are, and will be prerequisite to the functionality and success of many lighting and display systems. In this Highlight, a hundred years of inorganic luminescent material research are reviewed. Abstract:Inorganic luminescent semiconductors have triggered burgeoning research interest in all‐solid‐state light‐emitting devices over the past decades owing to their band‐to‐band transitions along with their high efficiency and excellent long‐term stability compared with most organic luminescent materials. Recent booming developments in 2D materials demonstrate their fascinating tunable layer‐dependent electronic structures, strong light–matter interactions, high carrier mobilities, and broad spectral ranges at the 2D limit, which are promising for high‐performance light‐emitting devices. Here, state‐of‐the‐art 2D luminescent nanomaterials are reviewed from the fundamental aspects of crystal structures and electronic properties to practical applications, providing insights into the luminescence mechanism. Many research paradigms are comprehensively discussed to elaborate ingenious luminescence modulation strategies through control of the microstructure, such as the number of layers, defects, morphologies, charge carriers, heterostructures, and surface states of 2D systems. Promising applications of 2D luminescent systems in light‐emitting diodes, lasers, and bioimaging and biosensing devices are systematically illustrated. Finally, by summarizing the luminescence in 2D materials, challenges are proposed, which will provide new opportunities for developing 2D luminescence physics, luminescent materials, and related light‐emitting device applications.

Abstract:Recently, the developing direction of materials is the functional complementarity and the property optimization. The rare earth complexes have highly luminescent properties and good chromatic purity, but they are unstable and lack the desired mechanical properties to be directly used as luminescent sources. These problems are expected to be solved by doping the complexes into suitable solid matrices. The resulting (inorganic/)organic hybrid luminescent materials combine the respective characteristics of organic and inorganic parts. According to the interactions between the rare earth complexes and the matrices, the hybrid materials include Class Ⅰ(the interactions are weak, typically hydrogen bonds or Van der Waals forces) and Class Ⅱ(the organic ligand is covalently linked to the silica framework). We briefly describe the preparation methods and give a review on the developments for the two classes hybrid luminescent materials. The developing trend for inorganic/organic hybrid materials doped with rare earth complex is also prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as particularly exciting multifunctional hybrid materials due to their inherent advantages of both organic linkers and inorganic metal ions, as well as the tailorability in terms of structure, dimension, size, and shape. As one special type of MOF materials, the lanthanide MOFs provide the bright promise to develop various types of luminescent applications due to their unique luminescence properties such as high luminescence quantum yield, long-lived emission, large Stokes shifts, and characteristically sharp line emissions. Up to now, lanthanide MOFs have been proven successful in many applications. In this chapter, we review the latest developments in lanthanide MOFs and their applications in sensing, light-emitting devices, and biomedicine. In addition, we highlight some strategies for effectively improving their luminescent function applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very promising multifunctional luminescent materials because of their inherent advantages of both organic linkers and inorganic metal ions, as well as the tailorability in terms of structure, dimension, size, and shape. Furthermore, the metal centers, organic linkers, metal-organic charge transfer, and guest molecules within porous MOFs all can potentially generate luminescence. Such uniqueness can allow us to generate luminescent MOF materials with systematically varied luminescence properties which are crucial for the lighting, display, and optical devices. Although luminescent MOFs are still in their infancy, the currently available results have unambiguously demonstrated that the design and construction of MOFs for luminescent functionality is very active, and hundreds of papers published in the last few years indicate that this interest is still increasing. This chapter outlines the basic principles and luminescence origins of MOF materials and then describes the latest developments in luminescent MOFs and their applications in light-emitting devices, chemical sensors, and biomedicine. As a conclusion, several evident research trends were proposed which are particularly promising but will require concerted effort for success.

This review will be a guideline for the design, synthesis and optical performance optimization of persistent materials in the future.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the panel display market, demand for efficient light emitters as active layers in electroluminescence (EL) devices has significantly increased. Luminescent inorganic lanthanide compounds (ILCs) with a characteristic f-d transition are particularly preferred for EL devices because of their high photoluminescent quantum yield, short excited-state lifetime, tunable emission spectra, and high thermal stability. In this Perspective, we first present an overview of inorganic lanthanide compounds with an emphasis on the mechanisms and characteristics of f-d emission. Then, the comprehensive advances of lanthanide element-doped inorganic compounds for EL study in recent decades are summarized. Moreover, the recent progress in directly employing ILCs for EL applications and rational improvement strategies in EL performance are highlighted. Last, we summarize the current challenges and opportunities of ILC-based EL devices as well as future improvement directions.

Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks(Ln-MOFs),which is composed of organic bridging ligands and Ln3+ions/clusters,is an important component of luminescent MOFs.Compared with transition metal ions,lanthanide ions have a higher coordination number and abundant coordination geometry.Moreover,Ln-MOFs have special characteristics such as good porosity,topological diversity,high surface area and highly adjustable structure.The energy transfer(ET)process in Ln-MOFs could be easily affected by the interac-tion between host framework and guest,resulting in the change of luminescence intensity or color.Over the past few decades,the features of Ln-MOFs open the door to a range of incredibly important applica-tions.However,there are few reviews on systemic summary of the various applications of Ln-MOFs.In this paper,we summarized the latest progress of Ln-MOFs applications,including the Ln-MOFs in chem-ical and biological sensors,optical information devices and catalysis,respectively,and discussed design mechanism.The possible problems in current research are briefly prospected,hoping to provide some helpful guidance for the future development of Ln-MOF materials.

Abstract:This paper reviews the physics of luminescent materials. For “classic” materials, like CaWO4 and Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl): Sb3+.Mn2+, this implies the configurational coordinate model with large offset, and the theory of Förster Dexter for energy transfer between two species. For new materials, with rareearthions as activators, this approach has to be extended to a configurational coordinate model with small offset, and energy migration, i.e. a sequence of many energy transfer steps. In this way higher efficiencies are possible. Finally it will be shown that a mixture of all these physical models is necessary to discuss the luminescence properties of compounds with different concentrations of Bi3+ and related ions.

Abstract:Near‐infrared materials exhibiting high photoluminescence quantum yields present a promising avenue to broaden our capacity and threshold for detection and manipulation, extending beyond the visible emission range. The spotlight has shifted to near‐infrared (NIR) luminescent materials emitting beyond 1000 nm, with growing interest due to their unique characteristics. The ability of NIR‐II emission (1000‐1700 nm) to penetrate deeply and transmit independently positions these NIR luminescent materials for applications in optical‐communication devices, bioimaging, and photodetectors. The combination of rare earth metals/transition metals with a variety of matrix materials provides a new platform for creating new chemical and physical properties for materials science and device applications. In this review, we summarize the recent advancements in NIR emission activated by rare earth and transition metal ions and illustrate their role in applications spanning bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics. We start from the various synthesis techniques, including high‐temperature solid‐state, hydrothermal, and thermal decomposition methods, on how to delicately incorporate the rare‐earth/transition metals to the NIR various matrixes, each imparting distinct characteristics to these luminescent materials. We then extend the discussion to strategies of enhancing excitation absorption and emission efficiency, spotlighting innovations like dye sensitization and surface plasmon resonance effects. Subsequently, a significant focus is placed on functionalization strategies and their applications. Finally, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and proposed strategies for rare earth/transition metal ion‐doped near‐infrared luminescent materials, summarizing the insights of each section. Abstract:Intrinsic luminescence from metal nanostructures complements conventional scattering and absorption behaviors and has many interesting and unique features. This phenomenon has attracted considerable research attention in recent years because of its various potential applications. In this review, we discuss recent advances in this field, summarize potential applications for this type of luminescence, and compare theoretical models to describe the phenomena. On the basis of the excitation process, the characteristic features and corresponding applications are summarized briefly in three parts, namely, continuous-wave light, pulsed laser, and electron excitation. A universal physical mechanism likely operates in all these emission processes regardless of differences in the excitation processes; however, there remains some debate surrounding the details of the theoretical model. Further insight into these luminescence phenomena will not only provide a deeper fundamental understanding of plasmonic nanostructures but will also advance and extend their applications.

Abstract:Luminescent small, all‐organic molecules are of tremendous interest in materials and life science applications. Nevertheless, targeted design requires a basic understanding of the excited state deactivation pathways of the molecules themselves, and the modulations of the processes that occur in the solid state. This particularly concerns crystalline molecular solids, as here not only solid‐state rigidification contributes to these modulations, but specific intermolecular interactions as well. Starting from the molecular properties, this work carefully disentangles all intramolecular and intermolecular factors to the radiative and nonradiative processes in crystalline all‐organic molecular solids to provide guidelines for targeted molecular materials design.

Abstract:Due to the isolation and fabrication of a rapidly increasing number of 2D materials, extensive attention is drawn to investigate 2D materials for scientific and technological studies as well as potential applications. In recent years, a series of significant and fascinating properties have been found and further modified in graphene and graphene‐like 2D layered materials. Among them, luminescence is one of the important investigation aspects, which is relevant to the unique structural, carrier transport, photonic, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. Herein, a general overview of recent advances of luminescence in 2D systems, including 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, is given. This review article provides an insight into the mechanism of luminescence and the luminescent characterizations and performance as well as the methods employed to modulate the luminescence behaviors of 2D systems. A number of recent works are introduced to specifically describe the new developments of photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and nonlinear optics in 2D materials. Then, the applications of luminescence in 2D systems are discussed in terms of optoelectronics and biological fields. By summarizing the importance of luminescence in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, the challenges and opportunities for future investigation and applications are highlighted. Luminescence in 2D materials is not only essential for structural and properties' characterization but also significantly important for device applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and future quantum technologies. Herein, recent advances and new developments in luminescence are reviewed, including the luminescent mechanism, characterizations, performance, and applications based on 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures.
