Abstract:The enthusiasm for research on lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles is driven by both a fundamental interest in the optical properties of lanthanides embedded in different host lattices and their promise for broad applications ranging from biological imaging to photodynamic therapy. Despite the considerable progress made in the past decade, the field of upconversion nanoparticles has been hindered by significant experimental challenges associated with low upconversion conversion efficiencies. Recent experimental and theoretical studies on upconversion nanoparticles have, however, led to the development of several effective approaches to enhancing upconversion luminescence, which could have profound implications for a range of applications. Herein we present the underlying principles of controlling energy transfer through lanthanide doping, overview the major advances and key challenging issues in improving upconversion luminescence, and consider the likely directions of future research in the field.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has received considerable interest for broad applications due to the potential remarkably high sensitivity and extremely wide dynamic range. In recent years, due to the unique physical (structural, electronic, magnetic and optical) and chemical (catalytic) properties of nanomaterials (NMs), great efforts have been made to investigate their application in ECL. In this review, we present a general description of ECL related to NMs as the emitter. It mainly focuses on the basic mechanisms and the development of an ECL sensing platform fabricated from semiconductor nanocrystals and metal nanoclusters. Finally, we conclude with a look at the future challenges and prospects of the development of ECL.

TrAC Trends in Analytical Chemistry

Abstract:In recent years, luminescent metal nanoclusters (metal NCs) with the unique features of intriguing optical properties and excellent biocompatibility, have emerged as a promising emitter in photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence biosensing and bioimaging field. Nevertheless, with ever-increasing demand for sensitivity and brightness, relatively low quantum yields of metal NCs limit their potential applications. Gaining a deeper understanding of structure-function relationship will guide the preparation of high-efficient luminescent metal NCs and advance their applications. In this review, delving into fundamental photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence mechanism, we discuss the effect of ligand structure on luminescent properties of metal NCs. Furthermore, we summarize recent progress in high-efficient metal NCs as well as their sensing and imaging applications on photoluminescence and electrochemiluminescence in recent three years. More importantly, we envisage the challenges of metal NCs in future research, which will bring exciting opportunities for the tailor-made functional metal NCs for promising analytical applications.

Abstract:Photoluminescence of plasmon nanomaterials is now a fundamental property of plasmons.Over the past two decades,this phenomenon has been observed in various plasmon materials with diverse structures.This study briefly discusses experimental research progress in plasmon photoluminescence,focusing on the representative types of proposed plasmon photoluminescence and briefly analyzing their photophysical processes.Furthermore,this study explores the cutting-edge applications of photoluminescence using plasmon materials in recent years in sensing,biological imaging,and other fields.Finally,it summarizes the research progress and problems faced in the photoluminescence of plasmon materials,the prospects of this photophysical process,and future research directions.

Abstract:The use of labelling or staining agents has greatly assisted the study of complex biological interactions in the field of biology. In particular, fluorescent labelling of biomolecules has been demonstrated as an indispensable tool in many biological studies. Types of fluorescent labelling agents that are commonly used include conventional classes of organic fluorophores such as fluorescein and cyanine dyes, as well as newer types of inorganic nanoparticles such as QDs, and novel fluorescent latex/silica nanobeads. The newer classes of fluorescent labels are gaining increasing popularity in place of their predecessors due to their better optical properties such as possessing an enhanced photostability and a larger Stokes shift over conventional organic fluorophores, for example. This paper gives an overview of the recent advances on these luminescent nanomaterials with emphases on their optical characteristics that are crucial in fluorescence microscopy, both advantages and limitations in their usage as well as challenges they face, and puts forward the future direction of fluorescent labels in the area of biolabelling.

Abstract:Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been widely investigated as light emitting materials in bio-imaging and sensing, solid state lighting and display, anti-fake tags and light conversion films, due to their characterized photophysical properties including large Stokes shift, long lifetime, and sharp emission spectrum, arising from the sensitized f - f transitions. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in luminescent lanthanide complexes and their applications from 2015 to August 2017 concerning of general concepts to potential applications. We first introduce the basic concept of sensitized luminescence of lanthanide complexes and the strategies used for highly luminescent complexes. Then recent varieties of luminescent lanthanide complexes and their hybrid materials are presented. Finally, applications are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Luminescent Janus nanoparticles refer to a special category of Janus-based nanomaterials that not only exhibit dual-asymmetric surface nature but also attractive optical properties. The introduction of luminescence has endowed conventional Janus nanoparticles with many alluring light-responsive functionalities and broadens their applications in imaging, sensing, nanomotors, photo-based therapy, etc. The past few decades have witnessed significant achievements in this field. This review first summarizes well-established strategies to design and prepare luminescent Janus nanoparticles and then discusses optical properties of luminescent Janus nanoparticles based on downconversion and upconversion photoluminescence mechanisms. Various emerging applications of luminescent Janus nanoparticles are also introduced. Finally, opportunities and future challenges are highlighted with respect to the development of next-generation luminescent Janus nanoparticles with diverse applications.

Abstract:In recent years, mechanoluminescence, as a unique luminescence phenomenon, exhibited huge potential applications and rapid development in stress detection, anti-counterfeiting, encryption, light sources and bio-imaging, etc. Recently, great efforts have been made on molecular aggregation science, molecular packing and intermolecular interaction in the solid state have been deeply understood, directly promoting the development and application of mechanoluminescence and photoluminescence materials. The phenomenon and mechanism of mechanoluminescence were firstly introduced, the relationship between mechanoluminescence and aggregation behaviors of organic compounds were discussed in detail. The measurement and characterization of mechanoluminescence, the relationship between applied stress and mechanoluminescence intensity, and the color of mechanoluminescence were briefly introduced, then, the current application of mechanoluminescence was highlighted. In the end, the prospect of organic mechanoluminescence materials was afforded.

Abstract:Intrinsic luminescence from metal nanostructures complements conventional scattering and absorption behaviors and has many interesting and unique features. This phenomenon has attracted considerable research attention in recent years because of its various potential applications. In this review, we discuss recent advances in this field, summarize potential applications for this type of luminescence, and compare theoretical models to describe the phenomena. On the basis of the excitation process, the characteristic features and corresponding applications are summarized briefly in three parts, namely, continuous-wave light, pulsed laser, and electron excitation. A universal physical mechanism likely operates in all these emission processes regardless of differences in the excitation processes; however, there remains some debate surrounding the details of the theoretical model. Further insight into these luminescence phenomena will not only provide a deeper fundamental understanding of plasmonic nanostructures but will also advance and extend their applications.

Abstract:Due to the isolation and fabrication of a rapidly increasing number of 2D materials, extensive attention is drawn to investigate 2D materials for scientific and technological studies as well as potential applications. In recent years, a series of significant and fascinating properties have been found and further modified in graphene and graphene‐like 2D layered materials. Among them, luminescence is one of the important investigation aspects, which is relevant to the unique structural, carrier transport, photonic, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. Herein, a general overview of recent advances of luminescence in 2D systems, including 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, is given. This review article provides an insight into the mechanism of luminescence and the luminescent characterizations and performance as well as the methods employed to modulate the luminescence behaviors of 2D systems. A number of recent works are introduced to specifically describe the new developments of photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and nonlinear optics in 2D materials. Then, the applications of luminescence in 2D systems are discussed in terms of optoelectronics and biological fields. By summarizing the importance of luminescence in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, the challenges and opportunities for future investigation and applications are highlighted. Luminescence in 2D materials is not only essential for structural and properties' characterization but also significantly important for device applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and future quantum technologies. Herein, recent advances and new developments in luminescence are reviewed, including the luminescent mechanism, characterizations, performance, and applications based on 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters (MNCs) can be synthesized with atomically precise structures and molecule formulae due to the rapid development of nanocluster science in recent decades. The ultrasmall size range (normally < 2 nm) endows MNCs with plenty of molecular-like properties, among which photoluminescent properties have aroused extensive attention. Tracing the research and development processes of luminescent nanoclusters, various photoluminescent analysis and characterization methods play a significant role in elucidating luminescent mechanism and analyzing luminescent properties. In this review, it is aimed to systematically summarize the normally used photoluminescent characterizations in MNCs including basic parameters and methods, such as excitation/emission wavelength, quantum yield, and lifetime. For each key parameter, first its definition and meaning is introduced and then the relevant characterization methods including measuring principles and the revelation of luminescent properties from the collected data are discussed. Then, it is discussed in details how to explore the luminescent mechanism of MNCs and construct NC-based applications based on the measured data. By means of these characterization strategies, the luminescent properties of MNCs and NC-based designs can be explained quantitatively and qualitatively. Hence, this review is expected to provide clear guidance for researchers to characterize luminescent MNCs and better understand the luminescent mechanism from the measured results.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very promising multifunctional luminescent materials because of their inherent advantages of both organic linkers and inorganic metal ions, as well as the tailorability in terms of structure, dimension, size, and shape. Furthermore, the metal centers, organic linkers, metal-organic charge transfer, and guest molecules within porous MOFs all can potentially generate luminescence. Such uniqueness can allow us to generate luminescent MOF materials with systematically varied luminescence properties which are crucial for the lighting, display, and optical devices. Although luminescent MOFs are still in their infancy, the currently available results have unambiguously demonstrated that the design and construction of MOFs for luminescent functionality is very active, and hundreds of papers published in the last few years indicate that this interest is still increasing. This chapter outlines the basic principles and luminescence origins of MOF materials and then describes the latest developments in luminescent MOFs and their applications in light-emitting devices, chemical sensors, and biomedicine. As a conclusion, several evident research trends were proposed which are particularly promising but will require concerted effort for success.

Abstract:The microstructures of nanomaterials play important role in electrochemical and optical properties of nanomaterials. With wide applications of nanomaterials in electrochemiluminescence (ECL), how the microstructures of nanomaterials affect the ECL properties of nanomaterials have attracted increasing attentions. Deeper understanding of the relationship between microstructures of nanomaterials and ECL properties can not only facilitate better performances of nanomaterials in ECL applications, but also promote new emerging applications of nanomaterial-based ECL. In this review, recent progress on impact of microstructures of nanomaterials on ECL properties was introduced. The microstructures of nanomaterials include defect, morphology, surface ligand, valence state and spatial distribution of nanomaterial composition. The ECL properties involve ECL intensity and efficiency, wavelength and polarization of ECL emission as well as ECL triggering potential. In addition, the mechanisms of how microstructures of nanomaterials shape ECL properties were discussed. Finally, future perspectives in this field were provided. This review may inspire researchers in analytical chemistry and material science to design and apply nanomaterials with well-controlled microstructures for desired ECL performances in various applications.
