Abstract:Luminescence is the eye-catching phenomenon of light emission by a mineral after some input of energy (the excitation). Although commonly used in Earth sciences only to produce images, much more can be extracted from this phenomenon. Luminescence is extremely sensitive to low levels of emitters (activators), which helps to reveal the geochemistry or the creation of defects. We give an overview of the great variety of techniques (cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence, and more), discuss vocabulary issues (such as excitation versus stimulation, or the different types of persistent luminescence phenomena), and propose wording we feel best reflects today's knowledge. We explain the basics of luminescence spectroscopy with emission, excitation, and time-resolved spectra to obtain useful data for Earth scientists.

Abstract:The use of labelling or staining agents has greatly assisted the study of complex biological interactions in the field of biology. In particular, fluorescent labelling of biomolecules has been demonstrated as an indispensable tool in many biological studies. Types of fluorescent labelling agents that are commonly used include conventional classes of organic fluorophores such as fluorescein and cyanine dyes, as well as newer types of inorganic nanoparticles such as QDs, and novel fluorescent latex/silica nanobeads. The newer classes of fluorescent labels are gaining increasing popularity in place of their predecessors due to their better optical properties such as possessing an enhanced photostability and a larger Stokes shift over conventional organic fluorophores, for example. This paper gives an overview of the recent advances on these luminescent nanomaterials with emphases on their optical characteristics that are crucial in fluorescence microscopy, both advantages and limitations in their usage as well as challenges they face, and puts forward the future direction of fluorescent labels in the area of biolabelling.

Abstract:Luminescent small, all‐organic molecules are of tremendous interest in materials and life science applications. Nevertheless, targeted design requires a basic understanding of the excited state deactivation pathways of the molecules themselves, and the modulations of the processes that occur in the solid state. This particularly concerns crystalline molecular solids, as here not only solid‐state rigidification contributes to these modulations, but specific intermolecular interactions as well. Starting from the molecular properties, this work carefully disentangles all intramolecular and intermolecular factors to the radiative and nonradiative processes in crystalline all‐organic molecular solids to provide guidelines for targeted molecular materials design.

Abstract:Luminescence is a powerful tool to infer physical and chemical conditions during mineral growth. It is very subtly linked to temperature of formation, composition and structural state, and related changes during rock evolution that often cause striking contrasts in the light emitted. This information can show magma sources and the hydrothermal evolution of igneous rocks, sources and diagenesis in sedimentary systems, and the pressure–temperature evolution during metamorphism. However, luminescence is most powerful when it goes beyond imaging , coupling with spectrosco-pies and microgeochemical techniques. We present examples of luminescence spectroscopies in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks to show how these methods elucidate geological processes. Luminescence imaging is an exciting scientific frontier in which novel methods provide ever deeper insights into petrogenesis.

Abstract:Luminescence imaging and hyperspectral luminescence mapping are powerful analytical tools with widespread applications in geosciences and materials science. The luminescence of minerals is mainly a defect phenomenon caused by lattice defects and/or impurity elements. This in turn allows one to study trace-element composition and the structural state of a sample by means of its emission. One of the most spectacular and widely used applications of luminescence images is to visualise internal textures in minerals that are not revealed by other analytical techniques. Herein we present a selection of examples for the extraordinary sensitivity of luminescence imaging. We also show that precise information on samples is obtained if luminescence imaging is combined with spectroscopic analysis of the emission and/or complementary analytical techniques.

Abstract:Luminescence applications in ore geology, mining, and beneficiation include remote prospecting, ground-based exploration, and radio metric sorting. Remote prospecting for ores with a drone or helicopter-borne luminescent sensing using laser excitation and time-delayed detection is becoming commonplace. Modern ground-based exploration increasingly utilises outlining of luminescing "fugitive calcite" veinlet halos, whose characteristics can rapidly and inexpensively give information on the overall size of a mineralised system and the principal structural controls on ore fluid migration pathways. Diamonds and scheelite have been found and recovered through X-ray luminescent radiometric sorting, while laser-induced luminescence has great potential, especially for sorting diamonds lacking X-ray luminescence, fluorite, spodumene, and rare earth element (REE)–bearing minerals. The luminescence concept is expanded here to include laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy; its fusion with X-ray techniques provides simultaneous information on both the mineralogical and chemical composition of a rock.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are very promising multifunctional luminescent materials because of their inherent advantages of both organic linkers and inorganic metal ions, as well as the tailorability in terms of structure, dimension, size, and shape. Furthermore, the metal centers, organic linkers, metal-organic charge transfer, and guest molecules within porous MOFs all can potentially generate luminescence. Such uniqueness can allow us to generate luminescent MOF materials with systematically varied luminescence properties which are crucial for the lighting, display, and optical devices. Although luminescent MOFs are still in their infancy, the currently available results have unambiguously demonstrated that the design and construction of MOFs for luminescent functionality is very active, and hundreds of papers published in the last few years indicate that this interest is still increasing. This chapter outlines the basic principles and luminescence origins of MOF materials and then describes the latest developments in luminescent MOFs and their applications in light-emitting devices, chemical sensors, and biomedicine. As a conclusion, several evident research trends were proposed which are particularly promising but will require concerted effort for success.

This review concentrates on the preparation, structure and luminescence properties of nanoscale rare earth compounds. Spectroscopic studies range from basic luminescence spectroscopy, luminescence intensity and decay time to concentration quench. Finally, some suggestions of further research work are preferred.

Abstract:Due to the isolation and fabrication of a rapidly increasing number of 2D materials, extensive attention is drawn to investigate 2D materials for scientific and technological studies as well as potential applications. In recent years, a series of significant and fascinating properties have been found and further modified in graphene and graphene‐like 2D layered materials. Among them, luminescence is one of the important investigation aspects, which is relevant to the unique structural, carrier transport, photonic, and optoelectronic properties of 2D materials. Herein, a general overview of recent advances of luminescence in 2D systems, including 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, is given. This review article provides an insight into the mechanism of luminescence and the luminescent characterizations and performance as well as the methods employed to modulate the luminescence behaviors of 2D systems. A number of recent works are introduced to specifically describe the new developments of photoluminescence, electroluminescence, and nonlinear optics in 2D materials. Then, the applications of luminescence in 2D systems are discussed in terms of optoelectronics and biological fields. By summarizing the importance of luminescence in 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, the challenges and opportunities for future investigation and applications are highlighted. Luminescence in 2D materials is not only essential for structural and properties' characterization but also significantly important for device applications in optoelectronics, biomedicine, and future quantum technologies. Herein, recent advances and new developments in luminescence are reviewed, including the luminescent mechanism, characterizations, performance, and applications based on 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures.

Abstract:To fully appreciate the contributions of Professor Watanabe to studies of luminescence, it is important to recall how, during his lifetime, not only have experimental facilities changed dramatically, but also there have been (and still are) many conflicting models as to the relevant lattice sites. This current overview summarises some of these factors. Indeed, several powerful early techniques have gone into abeyance, but there is a real potential benefit in resurrecting them. Equally, early key experiments on the existence of long-range interactions are frequently ignored, to the detriment of many models of lattice sites related to luminescence. Despite difficulties with defect site models and understanding luminescence processes, empirical data have nevertheless been effective in many applications from archaeological dating, luminescence dosimetry, and the development of modern phosphors for use across a wide range of modern applications. Improved models that include long-range features will inevitably add to this empirical progress.

Abstract:Up to now, the underlying mechanism of the energy dissipation process of mechanoluminescence (ML) is still dubious. It is challengeable and significant to take the initiative to control in terms of light intensity and colour. Here, by rubbing silica surface against other materials, we are able to detect a controllable luminous energy emission, the colour as well as the intensity of which can be dominated by the crystal structural state of silica. The results show that Purplish blue light is observed between quartz and alumina, while the light emitted from the interfaces of amorphous silica and alumina is orange red which is also affected by external force. The basics of such phenomenon are well explained by both experimental and theoretical simulation analysis. Our results show that the emitted light colour transition from purplish blue to orange red, is suggested to be strongly related to the increase of defect centers in amorphous silica resulting from the structural changes in the rubbing surface. Our work provides a promising way for controlling mechanoluminescence, as well as a deep view into the basic mechanism of ML light emission.

Some of their more relevant and novel biomedical, analytical, and optoelectronic applications are also commented on.

Abstract:The frontispiece shows the milestones of research on mechanoluminescent materials first documented in 1605. Since 1999, when mechanoluminescence emission was made visible to the naked eye, this field has evolved into a highly interdisciplinary subject by applications in biology, energy storage, and information technology. In the Minireview on page 1209, F. Wang et al. describe recent developments in the fabrication, characterization, and technological application of mechanoluminescent phosphors doped with lanthanide or transition-metal ions. Challenges to further development and use of mechanoluminescence are also discussed.
