Abstract:Near‐infrared materials exhibiting high photoluminescence quantum yields present a promising avenue to broaden our capacity and threshold for detection and manipulation, extending beyond the visible emission range. The spotlight has shifted to near‐infrared (NIR) luminescent materials emitting beyond 1000 nm, with growing interest due to their unique characteristics. The ability of NIR‐II emission (1000‐1700 nm) to penetrate deeply and transmit independently positions these NIR luminescent materials for applications in optical‐communication devices, bioimaging, and photodetectors. The combination of rare earth metals/transition metals with a variety of matrix materials provides a new platform for creating new chemical and physical properties for materials science and device applications. In this review, we summarize the recent advancements in NIR emission activated by rare earth and transition metal ions and illustrate their role in applications spanning bioimaging, sensing, and optoelectronics. We start from the various synthesis techniques, including high‐temperature solid‐state, hydrothermal, and thermal decomposition methods, on how to delicately incorporate the rare‐earth/transition metals to the NIR various matrixes, each imparting distinct characteristics to these luminescent materials. We then extend the discussion to strategies of enhancing excitation absorption and emission efficiency, spotlighting innovations like dye sensitization and surface plasmon resonance effects. Subsequently, a significant focus is placed on functionalization strategies and their applications. Finally, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the challenges and proposed strategies for rare earth/transition metal ion‐doped near‐infrared luminescent materials, summarizing the insights of each section. Abstract:Luminescence thermometry is a unique temperature detection technology with remote and noncontact functions. Rare earth doped materials have been widely used for luminescent thermometers due to their chemical stability and non-blinking properties. With rapid development of the nanoscience and nanotechnology, rare earth doped nanoparticles (RE-doped NPs) have emerged as good candidates for luminescence thermometry by providing high spatial resolution and wide temperature detection ranges. In this report, we focus on the principles and applications of RE-doped NPs for Luminescence thermometry and present recent advances, challenges, and perspectives.

Rare-earth Doped Optical Spectral Conversion Materials with Their Applications

Abstract:Based on the research work carried out in our laboratory in recent years, we focus on three categories of rare-earth doped spectral conversion materials, i.e., red phosphor for white-LED lighting, near-infrared downconversion materials and upconversion nanosized biological fluorescent labeling materials. Our work on the red phosphor for white-LED has been mainly focused on Eu3+ doped materials, and the energy transfer from sensitizers to Eu3+ ions is investigated in order to enhance the efficiency under the excitation of near-ultraviolet light. For the purpose of enhancing the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells, we have carried out the studies on near-infrared downconversion materials based on stepwise and cooperative energy transfer mechanisms and have clarified the downconversion mechanisms in NaYF4:Ho3+, Yb3+ and YVO4:Yb3+ materials. Biological fluorescent labeling is another important application of luminescent materials, which has some stringent requirements on the materials, such as the nanoparticle size, water-solubility, non-toxicity and luminescent efficiency. In our recent work, core/shell NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+(Tm3+)/NaYF4 UCNPs have been successfully synthesized and transferred to aqueous phase by coating a cross-linked PMAO polymer. The cross-linked core/shell nanoparticles are very stable for several days, and are successfully internalized into human prostate cancer cells, which substantiates the utility of these nanoparticles in biolabeling applications. To sum up, due to significant existing and potential applications in biological and chemical sensing, new energy resources, energy saving and environmental protection, rare-earth doped spectral conversion materials have been attracting extensive attention. The future of rare-earth doped optical spectral conversion materials would be bright.

Abstract:At present, the application of rare-earth organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) in fluorescence sensing has entered rapid development and shown great potential in various analytical fields, such as environmental analysis, food analysis, drug analysis, and biological and clinical analysis by utilizing their internal porosity, tunable structural size, and energy transfer between rare-earth ions, ligands, and photosensitizer molecules. In addition, because the luminescence properties of rare-earth ions are highly dependent on the structural details of the coordination environment surrounding the rare-earth ions, and although their excitation lifetimes are long, they are usually not burst by oxygen and can provide an effective platform for chemical sensing. In order to further promote the development of fluorescence sensing technology based on Ln-MOFs, we summarize and review in detail the latest progress of the construction of Ln-MOF materials for fluorescence sensing applications and related sensor components, including design strategies, preparation methods, and modification considerations and initially propose the future development prospects and prospects.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has received considerable interest for broad applications due to the potential remarkably high sensitivity and extremely wide dynamic range. In recent years, due to the unique physical (structural, electronic, magnetic and optical) and chemical (catalytic) properties of nanomaterials (NMs), great efforts have been made to investigate their application in ECL. In this review, we present a general description of ECL related to NMs as the emitter. It mainly focuses on the basic mechanisms and the development of an ECL sensing platform fabricated from semiconductor nanocrystals and metal nanoclusters. Finally, we conclude with a look at the future challenges and prospects of the development of ECL.

Abstract:Abstract Rare earth based phosphors are largely the most applied luminescent materials in the present lightening devices. Their ubiquity in lighting system, like light emitting diodes or compact fluorescent lamps, is related to the optical high efficiency of the rare earth as luminescent ions but also to the relative easiness of growth technique as well high structural stability of rare earth based host matrices, like garnets, perovskites and oxyorthosilicatas. On the other hand, the need of new devices virtually free of any elements with high supply disruption, the ones classified by EU community and US government as critical raw materials, boosts the research for alternatives materials. In this paper, we focalize on the optical properties of the REE based phosphors with the intent to underline the performances the new materials should grant, thus addressing the possible direction for new material development. In particular the features related to the possibility of tuning the luminescence, the interaction among doping ions and with surface defects were analysed. Abstract:Inorganic fluorescent nanoparticles (NPs) have initiated an extensive upsurge in biological application research. Just as quantum dots are regarded as a vigorous reinforcement of the organic dye family, rare earth (RE) fluorescent NPs, as another phosphors branch, also possess unique optical characteristics. The advantages of RE NPs in photostability and colorimetric purity make them suitable for bioprobe applications. Since the preparation technologies have been well developed, it is favourable to prompt the research in the interdisciplinary field of biology and material sciences. Herein, we summarize the synthesis and performance, together with bioprobe applications of RE oxide, sulfoxide, vanadate, phosphate, fluoride, and sodium RE fluoride nanomaterials. The prospects of these promising materials as applied in the biological field is described to draw readers' attention and to attract more research interest.

Abstract:Fast, cost effective, and robust means of detecting and quantifying lanthanides are needed to support more efficient tracking within the nuclear, medicinal, and industrial fields. Furthermore, methods for isolating lanthanide signal from spectroscopic interferents are also needed. Applying spectroelectrochemistry to the detection of these species can meet those needs. However, application of this technique is limited by the low molar absorptivities and quantum yields of the lanthanides. These limitations can be circumvented by complexing the lanthanides with sensitizing ligands that enhance fluorescence, thereby dropping the limits of detection. Complexation will also cause changes in the electrochemical be havior of the lanthanides. To demonstrate this concept, studies were completed using europium as a model lanthanide in complexes with four different sensitizing ligands, which included 2,2'-bipyridine and related derivatives. Results indicate that all four studied complexes demonstrate quasi-reversible redox couples and improvements in limits of detection where electrochemical and spectroscopic characteristics showed some dependence on attached ligand. All four complexes studied display the necessary characteristics for spectroelectrochemical analysis, which was successfully and reproducibly applied to all Eu complexes.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence has been developed as a robust analytical technique owing to its intrinsic advantages, such as near-zero background signal noise, wide dynamic ranges, high sensitivity and low cost and simple equipment. ECL luminophore as the critical component to generate light signals plays significant roles in this robust analytical system. Compared with traditional ECL luminophores, near infrared (NIR) ECL luminophores have attracted significant attentions recently due to their negligible autofluorescence, lower background interference and deep tissue penetration. Although substantial progresses have been achieved in exploring novel NIR ECL luminophores and elucidating their roles in addressing diverse challenges, there is still scarce of comprehensive reviews on the development of NIR ECL luminophores so far. In this review, the recent advancements on NIR ECL materials, including inorganic metal complexes, organic small molecules, metal nanoclusters, quantum dots and lanthanide-based materials, have been thoroughly summarized and discussed. In addition, we also provide a comprehensive overview of the challenges and prospects that lie ahead for the future development of NIR ECL luminophores in the future.

Laser-induced fluorescence (LiF) spectroscopy for detecting REE cross-contaminations in the Smithsonian rare-earth element phosphate standards

Abstract:Spectroscopy based methods have proven great potential in efficient, non-invasive material characterization. Recording the material-specific optical properties delivers instant information on the composition of an investigated sample surface without chemical sample preparation and may be operated in spatially continuous mode.&#160;In minerals, laser-induced fluorescence (LiF) provides a promising method to address the challenges of robust and efficient rare-earth element (REE) detection.&#160;The method is based on the characteristic electronic transitions within the incompletely filled f-shell of REE. The corresponding emission shows distinct features (spectral fingerprints) in the visible and near-infrared (VNIR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum that allow to distinguish between individual REE and mineral matrix luminescence. Only REE with completely filled or empty f-orbitals miss characteristic luminescence (i.e. Y3+, Sc3+, La3+, Lu3+), while the emissions of Gd3+ lie at lower wavelengths than the observed VNIR range.We test the suitability of LiF in applications of REE identification by (1) building a spectral LiF library from a sample set of luminescent REE phosphates and (2) evaluating observed emissions in samples of non-luminescent REE, and (3) comparing indicated REE cross-contamination to results of neutron activation analysis (NAA). As samples, we use the Smithsonian REE phosphate standards for electron microprobe analysis. The synthetic material delivers a simple, well-defined host composition, is well investigated and NAA results are available on additional trace REE concentration resulting from the material production procedure. The trace REE concentrations are at the order of 10-4 given in mass fraction. We employ laser-induced fluorescence at three commonly used laser wavelengths (325 nm, 442 nm, 532 nm) to acquire our REE sample spectra and record LiF signals in the visible to near-infrared spectral range (350 &#8211; 1080 nm).The comparison of spectra from non-luminescent REE phosphates shows clear similarities in emission patterns that can be assigned to specific luminescent REE using the spectral LiF library. Our results demonstrate the suitability of LIF for REE detection along with the benefits of selective element excitation and highlight the high sensitivity of the LiF method. The detected emissions in the non-luminescent samples indicate a detection limit below mass fractions of 10-4, when compared to NAA results, but also show that not all REE are equally responsive. Here, the co-existence of REE with complex interactions such as charge transfer contributes to the observed emission pattern.&#160;Adding to the spectral LiF library data and expanding investigations to further mineral hosts will facilitate new applications of LIF for REE analysis in natural samples and its implementation in raw material exploration.

Abstract:Luminescent sensing materials are attractive for environmental analysis due to their potential for high selectivity, excellent sensitivity and rapid (even instantaneous) response towards targeted analytes in diverse sample matrices. Many types of analytes have been detected in samples of wastewater for environmental protection, reagents and products in industrial production of drugs and pesticides, and biological markers in blood and urine for early diagnosis. It is still challenging, however, to develop appropriate materials with optimal sensing function for a targeted analyte. Here we synthesize metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing multiple luminescent centers, such as metal cations (for example, Eu 3+ and Tb 3+ ), organic ligands and guests, which are chosen for optimal selectivity for the analytes of interest, including industrial synthetic intermediates and chiral drugs. Interaction between the metal node, ligand, guest and analyte results in a complex system with different luminescence properties compared with the porous MOF on its own. The operation time for the synthesis is usually less than 4 h; the quick screening for sensitivity and selectivity takes ~0.5 h and includes steps to optimize the energy levels and spectrum parameters. It can be used to accelerate the discovery of advanced sensing materials for practical applications.

Abstract:With the rapid development of modern technology and information systems, optical anti-counterfeiting and encryption have recently attracted considerable attention. The demand for optical materials is also constantly increasing, with new requirements proposed for performance and application fields. Currently, rare earth ion doped materials possess a unique electronic layer structure, underfilled 4f5d electronic configuration, rich electronic energy level, and long-life excited state, which can produce a variety of radiation absorption and emission. The distinctive properties of rare earth are beneficial for using in diverse optical output anti-counterfeiting. Design is essential for rare earth ion doped materials with multiple responsiveness and multi-channel optical information anti-counterfeiting in the field of information security. Therefore, this mini review summarizes the luminescent mechanisms, preparation methods, performance characteristics and anti-counterfeiting application of rare earth doped materials. In addition, we discuss some critical challenges in this field, and potential solutions that have been or are being developed to overcome these challenges.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of fifteen elements ranging from lanthanum (Z = 57) to lutetium (Z = 71), also called lanthanides. Two further elements, namely scandium (Z = 21) and yttrium (Z = 39), are often referred to as REEs because they have chemical properties similar to lanthanides and are commonly found in the same mineral assemblages. The modern applications of these elements are countless. They constitute critical components of many technological devices and new functional materials, as well as they are extensively used in medical diagnostic applications and for these reasons, REEs are raising new interests of scientists worldwide. The search for chemical sensors suitable for selective sensing of trivalent REE ions represents an important and hard challenge because of their complicated coordination properties due to not well-defined stereo-chemical requirements and an uncertain coordination number, especially in aqueous solution. This review focuses on some of the main works published in the area of fluorescent and electrochemical probes for the detection of REE ions.

Abstract:Light and rare earths (RE) have a long lived relationship that dates from the discoveries of these elements in the nineteenth century. Since then, the increasing comprehension of their spectroscopic properties conducted to a wide and alluring literature about light absorption and emission by this particular and fascinating group. For more than 50 years, RE-containing solid-state optical materials have undoubtfully been an important subject for the development of more efficient lighting, visualization, communication and health everyday applications. Therefore, this review introduces the spectroscopic properties of rare earth materials and their applications, with a brief discussion of the main mechanisms of light absorption and emission from a 4f elements inorganic physical chemistry perspective. Special attention is devoted to the use of these elements in systems concerning photoprotection and to the fundamentals of visible light generation for lighting and visualization.
