Abstract:A series of precursors Li1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4, Li2ZrO3-coated Li1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4 and Li1.6Mn1.6O4 were successfully synthesized via simple hydrothermal treatment following roasting. Lithium ion-sieve was achieved by acid pickling the as-prepared precursors. The precursor itself dissolution during acid pickling was greatly inhibited after Li2ZrO3 coating. The substitution of Zr for Mn forms a strong Zr-Mn-O bond and increases the retention of adsorption capacity of lithium ion-sieve during cycling. Li2ZrO3 coating combined with Zr doping produces a synergistic effect for simultaneous improving the adsorption performance and cycling stability. Li1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4 coated with 2 wt% Li2ZrO3 exhibits a core-shell structure with a lithium adsorption capacity of 38.43 mg·g−1 in salt lake brine and initial Mn dissolution percentage of 2.76%. After 20 cycles, the capacity retention of Li2ZrO3-coated H1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4 maintains up to 94.5%, markedly higher than 78% for the pristine H1.6Mn1.6O4 and 85% for H1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4. What is more, the Mn dissolution percentage reduces to 0.15%, much lower than Li1.6Mn1.6O4 and Li1.6Zr0.04Mn1.56O4. This combination of coating and doping strategy provides a new window for the structure design of lithium ion-sieve.
