Abstract:In recent years, several papers appeared on generalizations of Fermat's little theorem and the Gauss congruence to integer square matrices. We will give simple and intuitive proofs deriving these matrix versions from the corresponding number-theoretic results.

Abstract:The theorem proved in this paper gives a congruence for the traces of powers of an algebraic integer for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power. The theorem implies a congruence in Gauss’ form for the traces of the sums of powers of algebraic integers, generalizing many familiar versions of Fermat’s little theorem. Applied to the traces of integer matrices, this gives a proof of Arnold’s conjecture about the congruence of the traces of powers of such matrices for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Abstract:Fermat's Little Theorem states that if p is a prime number and gcd (x,p) = 1, then xp−1 ≡ 1 (modp) If the requirement that gcd (x,p) = 1 is dropped, we can say xp ≡ x(modp)for any integer x. Euler generalized Fermat's Theorem in the following way: if gcd (x,n) = 1 then xφ(n) ≡ 1(modn), where φ is the Euler phi-function. It is clear that Euler's result cannot be extended to all integers x in the same way Fermat's Theorem can; that is, the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn)is not always valid. In this note we show exactly when the congruence xφ(n)+1 ≡ x(modn) is valid.

Abstract:We present an intuitively satisfying geometric proof of Fermat's result for positive integers that for prime moduli p, provided p does not divide a. This is known as Fermat’s Little Theorem. The proof is novel in using the idea of colorings applied to regular polygons to establish a number-theo retic result. A lemma traditionally, if ambiguously, attributed to Burnside provides a critical enumeration step.

Abstract:This paper verifies $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem for twisted gamma factors of irreducible cuspidal representations of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_p)$, for $n\leq 5,$ and of irreducible generic representations, for $n<\frac{q-1}{2\sqrt{q}}+1$ in the appendix by Zhiwei Yun, where $p$ is a prime and q is a power of $p$. The counterpart of $n\times 1$ converse theorem for level zero cuspidal representations also follows the established relation between gamma factors of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathcal F})$ and that of ${\rm GL}_n({\mathbb F}_q)$, where ${\mathcal F}$ denotes a $p$-adic field whose residue field is isomorphic to ${\mathbb F}_q.$ For $n=6,$ examples failed $n\times 1$ Local Converse Theorem over finite fields are provided and the authors propose a set of primitive representations, for which $n\times 1$ gamma factors should be able to detect a unique element in it. For $m, n\in {\mathbb N},$ in the spirit of Langlands functorial lifting, we formulate a conjecture to relate $n\times m$ gamma factors of finite fields with Gauss sums over extended fields.

Abstract:A frequently cited theorem says that for n > 0 and prime p, the sum of the first p n-th powers is congruent to -1 modulo p if p-1 divides n, and to 0 otherwise. We survey the main ingredients in several known proofs. Then we give an elementary proof, using an identity for power sums proven by Pascal in 1654. An application is a simple proof of a congruence for certain sums of binomial coefficients, due to Hermite and Bachmann.

Abstract:Considering $\mathbb{Z}_n$ the ring of integers modulo $n$, the classical Fermat-Euler theorem establishes the existence of a specific natural number $\varphi(n)$ satisfying the following property: $ x^{\varphi(n)}=1%\hspace{1.0cm}\text{for all}\hspace{0.2cm}x\in \mathbb{Z}_n^*, $ for all $x$ belonging to the group of units of $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this manuscript, this result is extended to a class of rings that satisfies some mild conditions.

We use algebra, modular math, and binomial series to develop inherent mathematical relationships hidden within Fermat's Last Theorem. With these derived relationships, we are able to develop general pattern applicable for all positive integers of n. Finally, we are able to confirm and complete the direct proof for Fermat's Diophantine equation for all n.

A Matrix Generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya Rearrangement Inequality and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:It is well known that in C[X], the product of two polynomials is equal to the product of their greatest common divisor and their least common multiple. In a recent paper, we proved a similar relation between the ranks of matrix polynomials. More precisely, the sum of the ranks of two matrix polynomials is equal to the sum of the rank of the greatest common divisor of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix and the rank of the least common multiple of the polynomials applied to the respective matrix. In this paper, we present three new proofs for this result. In addition to these, we present two more applications.
