Abstract:We construct several new families of non-congruent numbers with arbitrarily many prime factors congruent to 3 modulo 8. Our results generalize the work of Reinholz, Spearman and Yang [14]. Our methods are based on Monsky's formula on the 2-Selmer rank of the congruent elliptic curve and the recent results by Tian, Yuan and Zhang on the congruent number problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain some non-congruent numbers by studying the 8-ranks of the class groups of imaginary quadratic number fields ℚ(√(-n)) and the homogeneous spaces of congruent elliptic curves E_n . We also give some criteria for non-congruent numbers in terms of class groups.

Abstract:This paper is a survey on recent results of new series of non-congruent numbers which can be acquired by traditional arithmetic theory of elliptic curves plus a result from algebraic graph theory. More precisely, we start from the following two facts: (1) A square-free positive integer n is a non-congruent number if and only if the rank of the group E(n)(Q) of rational points of the elliptic curve E(n) : y(2) = x(3) - n(2)x is zero. (2) If the 2-Selmer groups S(n) and (S) over cap (n) of the elliptic curve E(n) and its dual curve (E) over cap (n) : y(2) = x(3) + 4n(2)x have minimal sizes |S(n)| = 1 and |(S) over capn| = 4, then rank(E(n)(Q)) = 0. Selmer groups can be determined by the data of locally solvability conditions of the homogenous spaces of elliptic curves E(n) and (E) over cap (n). The next step is to organize the data into carefully constructed graphs so that the Selmer groups have minimum if and only if the graphs have specific "odd" property. By a result in algebraic graph theory, an odd graph can be described by the rank of the Laplace matrix of the graph over F(2). Thus, by computing the rank of a certain matrix over F(2), we can determine all n such that S(n) and (S) over cap (n) have minimum, in which case n is a non-congruent number. After explaining this method and related concepts, we describe the results on new series of non-congruent numbers obtained in this way and illustrate them by examples.

This is a well-known result in group theory. In this paper, we prove two analogous theorems on matrices, which have independence significance. Specifically, let [math] be a given positive integer and [math] a complex square matrix satisfying that (i) all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and (ii) [math]; then [math] has a unique [math]-th root [math] with [math], all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and moreover there is a polynomial [math] with [math]. Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract: We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $\pi/3$ and $2\pi/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $\pi/3$ and $2\pi/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $\pi/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $\pi/3$($resp.$ $2\pi/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.

Abstract:We prove the unbounded denominators conjecture in the theory of noncongruence modular forms for finite index subgroups of SL_2(Z). Our result includes also Mason's generalization of the original conjecture to the setting of vector-valued modular forms, thereby supplying a new path to the congruence property in rational conformal field theory. The proof involves a new arithmetic holonomicity bound of a potential-theoretic flavor, together with Nevanlinna's second main theorem, the congruence subgroup property of SL_2(Z[1/p]), and a close description of the Fuchsian uniformization D(0,1)/\Gamma_N of the Riemann surface C \setminus \mu_N.

Abstract:In this paper, based on an ideal of Tian, we establish a new sufficient condition for a positive integer to be a congruent number in terms of Legendre symbols of prime factors of the positive integer. Our criterion generalizes previous criterions of Heegner, and Birch--Stephens, Monsky, and Tian, and conjecturally provides a list of positive density of congruent numbers. Our method of proving our criterion is to give formulae for the analytic Tate--Shafarevich number in terms of the so-called genus periods and genus points. These formulae are derived from the Waldspurger formula and the generalized Gross--Zagier formula of Yuan-Zhang-Zhang.

Abstract:Several discrete geometry problems are closely related to the arithmetic theory of elliptic curves defined on the rational fields ℚ. In this paper we consider the θ-congruent number for θ=π/3 and 2π/3 and tiling number n. For the case that n⩾ 2 is square-free odd integer, we determine all n such that the Selmer rank of elliptic curve E_n,π/3: y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n) or/and E_n,2π/3: y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n) is zero. From this, we provide several series of non θ-congruent numbers for θ=π/3 and 2π/3, and non tiling numbers n with arbitrary many of prime divisors.

Abstract:We show that Ramanujan-type congruences are preserved by the action of the shallow Hecke algebra and provide several structure results for them. We discover a dichotomy between congruences originating in Hecke eigenvalues and congruences on arithmetic progressions with cube-free periods. The scarcity of the latter was investigated recently. We explain that they provide congruences among algebraic parts of twisted central $\mathrm{L}$-values. We specialize our results to partition congruences, for which we investigate the proofs of partition congruences by Atkin and by Ono, and develop a heuristic that suggests that their approach by Hecke operators acting diagonally modulo $\ell$ on modular forms is optimal. In an extended example, we showcase how to employ our conclusions to benefit experimental work.

Computing finite index congruences of finitely presented semigroups and monoids

Abstract:In this paper we describe an algorithm for computing the left, right, or 2-sided congruences of a finitely presented semigroup or monoid with finitely many classes, and alternative algorithm when the finitely presented semigroup or monoid is finite. We compare the two algorithms presented to existing algorithms and implementations. The first algorithm is a generalization of Sims' low index subgroup algorithm for finding the congruences of a monoid. The second algorithm involves determining the distinct principal congruences, and then finding all of their possible joins. Variations of this algorithm have been suggested in numerous contexts by numerous authors. We show how to utilise the theory of relative Green's relations, and a version of Schreier's Lemma for monoids, to reduce the number of principal congruences that must be generated as the first step of this approach. Both of the algorithms described in this paper are implemented in the GAP package Semigroups, and the first algorithm is available in the C++ library libsemigroups and in its python bindings libsemigroups_pybind.
