Abstract:Let K = $k(\sqrt \theta )$ be a real cyclic quartic field, k be its quadratic subfield and $\tilde K = k(\sqrt { - \theta } )$ be the corresponding imaginary quartic field. Denote the class numbers of K, k and $\tilde K$ by h K , h k and {417-3} respectively. Here congruences modulo powers of 2 for h − = h K /h K and $\tilde h^ - = h_{\tilde K} /h_k $ are obtained via studying the p-adic L-functions of the fields.

Abstract:Let r be a positive integer, and let be integers such that for all . In this article, we prove the existence of infinitely many positive integers D such that the class numbers of the real quadratic fields are simultaneously divisible by 3. This result gives an affirmative answer to a weaker version of a conjecture of Iizuka (J Number Theory 184:122–127, 2018).

Abstract:In 1951, Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla published a brief note containing four congruence relations involving the class number of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ for positive squarefree integers $d\equiv 1 \bmod{4}$. Many of the ideas present in their paper can be seen as the precursors to the now developed theory of cyclotomic fields. Curiously, little attention has been paid to the cases of $d\equiv 2,3\bmod{4}$ in the literature. In the present work, we show that the congruences of the type proven by Ankeny, Artin, and Chowla can be seen as a special case of a more general methodology using Kubota$\unicode{x2013}$Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-functions. Aside from the classical congruence involving Bernoulli numbers, we derive congruences involving quadratic residues and non-residues in $\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ by relating these values to a well known expression for $L_p(1, \chi)$. We conclude with a discussion of known counterexamples to the so-called Composite Ankeny$\unicode{x2013}$Artin$\unicode{x2013}$Chowla conjecture and relate these to special dihedral extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:We give a new and self-contained proof for an alternative form of Tunnell’s theorem on congruent numbers. The proof relies on more knowledge on quadratic forms with less calculation than Tunnell’s proof. The approach is based on our observation that the equality $$\#\{(x,y,z,w) \in \mathbb {Z}^4|p=2x^2+3y^2+3z^2+4w^2+2yz\}=\#\{(x,y,z) \in \mathbb {Z}^3|p^2=2x^2+4y^2+9z^2-4yz\}$$ holds for any odd prime p. The same method is applied to the elliptic curves $$E_n:~y^2=x^3+n^2x$$ and $$E_{n}:~~y^2=x(x-n)(x+3n)(E_{-n}:~~y^2=x(x+n)(x-3n))$$ ( $$\pi /3$$ ( $$2\pi /3$$ )-congruent elliptic curves), where we list, without proof, the analogous results. A series of criteria for congruent numbers are given. In particular, for a prime p, we show that if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {8}$$ is a congruent number then the 8-rank of $$K_2O_{\mathbb {Q}(\sqrt{p})}$$ equals one; if $$p\equiv 1\pmod {16}$$ with $$h(-p)\not \equiv h(-2p)\pmod {16}$$ then 2p is not a congruent number; and if $$p\equiv 1, q\equiv 3\pmod {8}$$ are two primes with $$h(-pq)\not \equiv h(-p)\pmod {8}$$ then pq is not a congruent number.

Abstract:Assume $x,\ y,\ n$ are positive integers and $n$ is odd. In this note, we show that the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{x^{2}-y^{n}})$ is divisible by $n$ for fixed $x, n$ if $\gcd(2x,y)=1$ and $y>C$ where $C$ is a constant depending only on $x$ and $n$. Based on this result, for any odd integer $n$ and any positive integer $m$, we construct an infinite family of $m+1$ successive imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1^{2}})$, $\cdots$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+m^{2}})$ $(d\in \mathbb{Z})$ whose class numbers are all divisible by $n$.

Recently a q-analogue of the first congruence was conjectured by Guo and Zeng. In this paper we prove the conjecture of Guo and Zeng, and also give a q-analogue of the second congruence.

Abstract:Let q ≥ 5 be a prime number.Let be a quadratic number field,where d = Then the class number of k is divisible by q for certain integers u,w.Conversely,assume Ω/ k is an unramified cyclic extension of degree q Ω (which implies the class number of k is divisible by q),and Ω is the splitting field of some irreducible trinomial f(X) = Xq-aX-b with integer coefficients,K=Q(D(F))with D(f) the discriminant of f(X).Then f(X) must be of the form f(X) = Xq-uq-2wX-uq-1 in a certain sense where u,w are certain integers.Therefore,K=Q(d) with d = (-1)q(q-1)/2(-q-1)q-1uwq-1uw-+u2qq).Moreover,the above two results are both generalized for certain kinds of general polynomials.

Abstract:The theory of continued fractions of functions $ \sqrt D $ is used to give lower bound for class numbers $h(D)$ of general real quadratic function fields $K=k(\sqrt D)$ over $k={\bf F}_q(T)$. For five series of real quadratic function fields $K$, the bounds of $h(D)$ are given more explicitly, e.g., if $ D=F^2+c,$ \mbox{}\hspace{0.1cm} then $ h(D)\geq {deg}F /{deg} P;$ \hspace{0.1cm} if $D=(SG)^2+cS, $ then $ h(D)\geq {deg}S / {deg} P; $ if $D=(A^m+a)^2+A, $ then $ h(D)\geq {deg}A / {deg} P, $ where $P$ is irreducible polynomial splitting in $K, c\in {\bf F}_q$ is any constant. Abstract:In this article, we prove a modulo $p$ congruence which connects the class number of the quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{(-1)^{(p-1)/2}p})$ and the trace of a certain monomial in a root $\theta$ of the Artin-Schreier polynomial $\theta^{p}-\theta-1$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ of $p$ elements. This formula has a flavor of Dirichlet's class number formula which connects the class number and the $L$-value. The proof of our formula is based on several formulae satisfied by the Bell number, where the latter is defined as the number of partitions of $\{ 1, 2, ..., n \}$ and a purely combinatorial object. Among such formulae, we prove a generalization of the so called ``trace formula'' due to Barsky and Benzaghou which describes the special values of the Bell polynomials modulo $p$ by the trace mentioned above.

Abstract:We exhibit an explicit formula for the cardinality of solutions to a class of quadratic matrix equations over finite fields. We prove that the orbits of these solutions under the natural conjugation action of the general linear groups can be separated by classical conjugation invariants defined by characteristic polynomials. We also find a generating set for the vanishing ideal of these orbits.
