Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition was presented for the quadratic stability of interval matrices and a related calculation method of stability margin. The results were obtained in terms of LMIs. With the powerful LMI toolbox, it was very convenient to solve this problem. Examples showed that this method is effective in determining the robust stability and related stability margin of interval matrices.

Furthermore, based on the estimation for the rank, some sufficient conditions for nonsingular matrices are obtained.

Abstract:The H-matrices are an important class in the matrix theory, and have many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order ?-tensors. In this paper, we establish important properties of diagonally dominant tensors and ?-tensors. Distributions of eigenvalues of nonsingular symmetric ?-tensors are given. An ?+-tensor is semi-positive, which enlarges the area of semi-positive tensor from ?-tensor to ?+-tensor. The spectral radius of Jacobi tensor of a nonsingular (resp. singular) ?-tensor is less than (resp. equal to) one. In particular, we show that a quasi-diagonally dominant tensor is a nonsingular ?-tensor if and only if all of its principal sub-tensors are nonsingular ?-tensors. An irreducible tensor Ais an ?-tensor if and only if it is quasi-diagonally dominant.

Abstract:The M-matrix is an important concept in matrix theory, and has many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order tensors [18]. In this paper, we establish some important properties of M-tensors and nonsingular M-tensors. An M-tensor is a Z-tensor. We show that a Z-tensor is a nonsingular M-tensor if and only if it is semi-positive. Thus, a nonsingular M-tensor has all positive diagonal entries; an M-tensor, regarding as the limit of a sequence of nonsingular M-tensors, has all nonnegative diagonal entries. We introduce even-order monotone tensors and present their spectral properties. In matrix theory, a Z-matrix is a nonsingular M-matrix if and only if it is monotone. This is no longer true in the case of higher order tensors. We show that an even-order monotone Z-tensor is an even-order nonsingular M-tensor, but not vice versa. An example of an even-order nontrivial monotone Z-tensor is also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a nonlinear matrix equation. We propose necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Hermitian positive definite solutions. Some necessary conditions and sufficient conditions for the existence of Hermitian positive definite solutions of this equation is also derived. Based on the Banach fixed point theorem, the existence and the uniqueness of the Hermitian positive definite solution are studied. An iterative method for obtaining the Hermitian positive definite solution of this equation is proposed. Finally, some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the performance and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Nonsingularity of a matrix is investigated in this technical note that depends affinely on several uncertainty matrices whose real and imaginary parts are constrained by some quadratic forms. Based on some equivalent descriptions for these uncertainty matrices, a sufficient condition is derived. This condition is given in a linear matrix inequality form and can in principle be efficiently validated. The obtained result includes some well known results in systems and control theory as a special case, such as the Lyapunov equation based stability criterion for linear time invariant systems, the (D,G)-scaling based upper bound for the mixed structured singular value, a sufficient condition for the stability of spatially interconnected systems, etc. A computationally verifiable condition is also provided that indicates situations under which the aforementioned condition becomes necessary.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the problem of the uniqueness of singular points of vector fields on Riemannian manifolds. The radii of the uniqueness balls of the singular points of vector fields are estimated under the assumption that the vector fields satisfy the γ-condition, and the results due to Wang and Han in [Criterion α and Newton's method under weak conditions, Chinese J. Numer. Appl. Math. 19(2) (1997) 96–105] are extended. Moreover, applications to analytic vector fields are given.

These sufficient conditions only depend on the elements of given matrices, and so they provide some simple criteria for applications. Moreover, numerical examples are given to illustrate the conditions presented.

Abstract:Commutative matrices of MIMO linear system are considered. The existence of the feedback matrices of commutative state matrix set in the SISO closed-loop systems is reduced to the eigenvalue and eigenvector of matrices A and the existence of feedback matrices in the MIMO closed-loop systems is reduced to invariance subspace of matrix A, and the existence of feedback matrices in the open-loop systems is equivalent,to the existence of the solution of Lyapunov matrix equation. Kronecker product is used as the tool in dealing with commutative state matrix set. Results are demonstrated by two material examples.

Abstract:In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of the Hermitian positive definite solution for a nonlinear matrix equation are derived. Then, a sufficient condition for the existence of the unique Hermitian positive definite solution is presented. Further, we propose to use Newton's method to solve this nonlinear matrix equation with some constraints. In addition, we prove the convergence of Newton's method. Finally, we present some numerical examples to illustrate the effectiveness of the derived results.

Abstract:Newton's inequalities $c_n^2 \ge c_{n-1}c_{n+1}$ are shown to hold for the normalized coefficients $c_n$ of the characteristic polynomial of any $M$- or inverse $M$-matrix. They are derived by establishing first an auxiliary set of inequalities also valid for both of these classes. They are also used to derive some new necessary conditions on the eigenvalues of nonnegative matrices.

Abstract:General stationary iterative methods with a singular matrix M for solving range‐Hermitian singular linear systems are presented, some convergence conditions and the representation of the solution are also given. It can be verified that the general Ortega–Plemmons theorem and Keller theorem for the singular matrix M still hold. Furthermore, the singular matrix M can act as a good preconditioner for solving range‐Hermitian linear systems. Numerical results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the general stationary iterations and the singular preconditioner M. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to obtain new lower bounds for the smallest singular value for some special subclasses of nonsingularH-matrices. This is done in two steps: first, unifying principle for deriving new upper bounds for the norm 1 of the inverse of an arbitrary nonsingular H-matrix is presented, and then, it is combined with some well-known upper bounds for the infinity norm of the inverse. The importance and efficiency of the results are illustrated by an example from ecological modelling, as well as on a type of large-scale matrices posessing a block structure, arising in boundary value problems.
