Abstract:A square matrix A of order n is said to be tripotent if A 3 = A. In this note, we give a nine-term disjoint idempotent decomposition for the linear combination of two commutative tripotent matrices and their products. Using the decomposition, we derive some closed-form formulae for the eigenvalues, determinant, rank, trace, power, inverse and group inverse of the linear combinations. In particular, we show that the linear combinations of two commutative tripotent elements and their products can produce 39 = 19,683 tripotent elements.

Abstract:A matrix over ring with identity has the consecutive-column (CC) property if for all k, all its relevant submatrices having k consecutive rows and the first k columns are invertible. Similarly, the consecutive-row (CR) is defined. In this paper, we show that a arbitrary m x n matrix has both CC and CR properties if and only if it admits a certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This factorization is unique. We also show that there is a mutual 1 - 1 relations between the matrices having CC and CR properties and this certain factorization with bidiagonal-type factors (with invertible entries). This bidiagonal factorization has important applications in computer aided geometry design, electrical network and many other fields.

Abstract:Gerstenhaber proved in 1961 that the unital algebra generated by a pair of commuting $d\times d$ matrices over a field has dimension at most $d$. It is an open problem whether the analogous statement is true for triples of matrices which pairwise commute. We answer this question for special classes of triples of matrices arising from combinatorial data.

Abstract:The M-matrix is an important concept in matrix theory, and has many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order tensors [18]. In this paper, we establish some important properties of M-tensors and nonsingular M-tensors. An M-tensor is a Z-tensor. We show that a Z-tensor is a nonsingular M-tensor if and only if it is semi-positive. Thus, a nonsingular M-tensor has all positive diagonal entries; an M-tensor, regarding as the limit of a sequence of nonsingular M-tensors, has all nonnegative diagonal entries. We introduce even-order monotone tensors and present their spectral properties. In matrix theory, a Z-matrix is a nonsingular M-matrix if and only if it is monotone. This is no longer true in the case of higher order tensors. We show that an even-order monotone Z-tensor is an even-order nonsingular M-tensor, but not vice versa. An example of an even-order nontrivial monotone Z-tensor is also given.

Abstract:We present canonical forms for all indecomposable pairs $(A,B)$ of commuting nilpotent matrices over an arbitrary field under simultaneous similarity, where $A$ is the direct sum of two Jordan blocks with distinct sizes. We also provide the transformation matrix $X$ such that $(A, X^{-1}BX)$ is in its canonical form.

Abstract:The H-matrices are an important class in the matrix theory, and have many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order ?-tensors. In this paper, we establish important properties of diagonally dominant tensors and ?-tensors. Distributions of eigenvalues of nonsingular symmetric ?-tensors are given. An ?+-tensor is semi-positive, which enlarges the area of semi-positive tensor from ?-tensor to ?+-tensor. The spectral radius of Jacobi tensor of a nonsingular (resp. singular) ?-tensor is less than (resp. equal to) one. In particular, we show that a quasi-diagonally dominant tensor is a nonsingular ?-tensor if and only if all of its principal sub-tensors are nonsingular ?-tensors. An irreducible tensor Ais an ?-tensor if and only if it is quasi-diagonally dominant.

Abstract:For a skew-symmetrizable cluster algebra ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ with principal coefficients at $t_{0}$, we prove that each seed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}_{t}$ of ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$ is uniquely determined by its $C$-matrix, which was proposed by Fomin and Zelevinsky (Compos. Math. 143 (2007), 112–164) as a conjecture. Our proof is based on the fact that the positivity of cluster variables and sign coherence of $c$-vectors hold for ${\mathcal{A}}_{t_{0}}$, which was actually verified in Gross et al. (Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31(2) (2018), 497–608). Further discussion is provided in the sign-skew-symmetric case so as to obtain a weak version of the conjecture in this general case.
Is This a New Class of Matrices?

Abstract:We consider a new class of matrices associated to a real square matrix $A$ and to a vector $\vec{c} \in \{-1,1\}^n$ such that $c_1=1$ by using a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ which turns out to be a conjugation of a matrix $A$ by a signature matrix. It is shown that every such matrix is similar and congruent to a matrix $A$ and that they have same permanental polynomials. There are $2^{n-1}$ maps $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ and they form an abelian group under the composition of maps isomorphic to the group $({\mathbb{Z}_2}^{n-1}, +)$. A decomposition of matrices, on a symmetric and antisymmetric matrix under a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$, is considered. Particularly, it is shown that sum of all principal minors of the order two of a matrix $A$ is equal to the sum of all principal minors of the order two of their symmetric and antisymmetric parts. It is shown that any symmetric matrix and any antisymmetric matrix under the map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ are simultaneously permutation similar to certain block matrices which have two blocks. Finally, for a fixed matrix $A$, it is proved that the number of different matrices $\varphi_{\vec{c}}(A)$ is $2^{n-t}$, where $t$ is the number of connected components of the graph $G$ whose adjacency matrix is $A$.

Abstract:Let R be an arbitrary ring. In this paper, the following statements are proved: (a) Each idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized if and only if each idempotent matrix over R has a characteristic vector. (b) An idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized under a similarity transformation if and only if it is equivalent to a diagonal matrix. (a) and (b) generalize Foster's and Steger's theorems to arbitrary rings. We give some new results about 0-similarity of idempotent matrices over R.

Abstract:We consider 9 Gaussian matrix ensembles characterized by single symmetry among the 38-fold symmetry classification classes of non-Hermitian random matrices, and establish exact duality formulae of certain observables between them. Particularly, averaged products of K characteristic polynomials in an N×N matrix ensemble can be expressed in terms of another K×K matrix ensemble. Our method is to combine matrix-valued heat equations and differential identities for determinants and Pfaffians and has more possible applications.

For a nilpotent group [math] without [math]-torsion, and [math], [math], if [math] for a [math]-number [math], then [math]; if [math] for [math]-numbers [math], [math], then [math]. This is a well-known result in group theory. In this paper, we prove two analogous theorems on matrices, which have independence significance. Specifically, let [math] be a given positive integer and [math] a complex square matrix satisfying that (i) all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and (ii) [math]; then [math] has a unique [math]-th root [math] with [math], all eigenvalues of [math] are nonnegative, and moreover there is a polynomial [math] with [math]. In addition, let [math] and [math] be complex [math] matrices with all eigenvalues nonnegative, and [math], [math]; then (i) [math] when [math] for some positive integer [math], and (ii) [math] when [math] for two positive integers [math] and [math].

Abstract:A commutator of unipotent matrices of index 2 is a matrix of the form $XYX^{-1}Y^{-1}$, where $X$ and $Y$ are unipotent matrices of index 2, that is, $X\ne I_n$, $Y\ne I_n$, and $(X-I_n)^2=(Y-I_n)^2=0_n$. If $n>2$ and $\mathbb F$ is a field with $|\mathbb F|\geq 4$, then it is shown that every $n\times n$ matrix over $\mathbb F$ with determinant 1 is a product of at most four commutators of unipotent matrices of index 2. Consequently, every $n\times n$ matrix over $\mathbb F$ with determinant 1 is a product of at most eight unipotent matrices of index 2. Conditions on $\mathbb F$ are given that improve the upper bound on the commutator factors from four to three or two. The situation for $n=2$ is also considered. This study reveals a connection between factorability into commutators of unipotent matrices and properties of $\mathbb F$ such as its characteristic or its set of perfect squares.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop and enrich the theory of nonnegative tensors. We define the sign nonsingular tensors and establish the relationship between the combinatorial determinant and the permanent of nonnegative tensors. We generalize the results from doubly stochastic matrices to totally plane stochastic tensors and obtain a probabilistic algorithm for locating a positive diagonal in a nonnegative tensor under certain conditions. We form a normalization algorithm to convert some nonnegative tensors to plane stochastic tensors. We obtain a lower bound for the minimum of the axial N-index assignment problem by means of the set of plane stochastic tensors.

Abstract:The problem of classifying tuples of nilpotent matrices over a field under simultaneous conjugation is considered "hopeless". However, for any given matrix order over a finite field, the number of concerned orbits is always finite. This paper gives a closed formula for the number of absolutely indecomposable orbits using the same methodology as Hua [5]; those orbits are non-splittable over field extensions. As a consequence, those numbers are always polynomials in the cardinality of the base field with integral coefficients. It is conjectured that those coefficients are always non-negative.

Abstract:Let $M_{1,2}(F)$ be the algebra of $3 \times 3$ matrices with orthosymplectic superinvolution $*$ over a field $F$ of characteristic zero. We study the $*$-identities of this algebra through the representation theory of the group $\mathbb{H}_n = (\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2) \sim S_n$. We decompose the space of multilinear $*$-identities of degree $n$ into the sum of irreducibles under the $\mathbb{H}_n$-action in order to study the irreducible characters appearing in this decomposition with non-zero multiplicity. Moreover, by using the representation theory of the general linear group, we determine all the $*$-polynomial identities of $M_{1,2}(F)$ up to degree $3$.
