Abstract:In this short note, we prove that given any nonsingular matrix, the singular values of the super-optimal preconditioned matrix do not exceed the corresponding singular values of the optimal preconditioned matrix.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the eigenvalues properties of the general saddle point problem with preconditioners which contain a real parameter alpha. We will give the minimal polynomial of these preconditioned matrix and show that the eigenvalues of preconditioned matrix are real, and the exact Schur complement leads to preconditioned matrix with exactly two or exactly three distinct eigenvalues which are the function of the parameter alpha.

Abstract:We present a valid lower bound for the real eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix even if its $(2,2)$ block is singular. This bound, together with bounds introduced by Benzi and Simoncini in [Numer. Math., 103 (2006), pp. 173-196], is applied for the analysis of symmetric indefinite preconditioners and primal-based penalty preconditioners. Eigenvalue estimates for the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting preconditioned saddle point matrices are also derived. The model problem of Stokes equations is used to illustrate the presented theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, the condition number of singular value is discussed. The expressions of the zero-structured and patterned conditioning are also studied. The numerical tests are reported to provide interesting information about the singular value sensitivity when the perturbations of the matrix have arbitrarily assigned zero-structured and patterned case.

Under the nonsingularity assumption of the relative generalized Jacobian matrices at the solution c⁎, a convergence analysis for the multiple and positive case is provided and the superlinear or quadratical convergence properties are proved. Moreover, numerical experiments are given in the last section and comparisons are made.

Abstract:We study the issue of numerically solving inverse singular value problems (ISVPs). Motivated by the Newton-type method introduced in [3] for solving ISVPs with distinct and positive singular values, we propose an extended Newton-type method working for ISVPs with multiple and/or zero singular values. Because of the absence of some important and crucial properties, the approach/technique used in the case of distinct and positive singular values no longer works for the case of multiple and/or zero singular values, and we develop a new approach/technique to treat the case of multiple and/or zero singular values. Under the standard nonsingularity assumption of the relative generalized Jacobian matrix at a solution, the quadratic convergence result is established for the extended Newton-type method, and numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the convergence performance of the extended method. Our extended method and convergence result in the present paper improve and extend significantly the corresponding ones in [1,3,25] for the special cases of distinct and positive singular values and/or of square matrices.

Abstract:In this study, some upper and lower bounds for singular values of a general complex matrix are investigated, according to singularity and Wielandt’s lemma of matrices. Especially, some relationships between the singular values of the matrix A and its block norm matrix are established. Based on these relationships, one may obtain the effective estimates for the singular values of large matrices by using the lower dimension norm matrices. In addition, a small error in Piazza (2002) [G. Piazza, T. Politi, An upper bound for the condition number of a matrix in spectral norm, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 143 (1) (2002) 141–144] is also corrected. Some numerical experiments on saddle point problems show that these results are simple and sharp under suitable conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive bounds for the complex eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix with a symmetric positive semidefinite (2, 2) block, that extend the corresponding previous bounds obtained by Bergamaschi. For the nonsymmetric saddle point problem, we propose a block diagonal preconditioner for the conjugate gradient method in a nonstandard inner product. Abstract:The aim of this paper is to obtain new lower bounds for the smallest singular value for some special subclasses of nonsingularH-matrices. This is done in two steps: first, unifying principle for deriving new upper bounds for the norm 1 of the inverse of an arbitrary nonsingular H-matrix is presented, and then, it is combined with some well-known upper bounds for the infinity norm of the inverse. The importance and efficiency of the results are illustrated by an example from ecological modelling, as well as on a type of large-scale matrices posessing a block structure, arising in boundary value problems.

Abstract:I revisit the condition number of computing left and right singular subspaces from J.-G. Sun (1996) [19]. For real and complex matrices, I present an alternative computation of this condition number in the Euclidean distance on the input space of matrices and the chordal, Grassmann, and Procrustes distances on the output Grassmannian manifold of linear subspaces. Up to a small factor, this condition number equals the inverse minimum singular value gap between the singular values corresponding to the selected singular subspace and those not selected.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an extended Ulm-like method for solving the inverse singular value problem (ISVP for short) with multiple and/or zero singular values. Compared with the Ulm-like method, the proposed method reduces the amount of calculations and is well-defined even when multiple and/or zero singular values appear. Under the nonsingularity assumption for the relative generalized Jacobian at a solution and by using a new technique, a convergence analysis is provided and the quadratic convergence is proved. Our results in the present paper improve and extend significantly the corresponding ones of Vong et al. (2011) and Shen et al. (2018) for the ISVP with distinct and positive singular values and/or with square matrices. In particular, we solve the interesting problem raised in Vong et al. (2011): whether the Ulm-like method and its convergence result can be extended to the cases of multiple singular values and of zero singular values. Numerical results reveal that the extended Ulm-like method is an efficient algorithm for the ISVPs even when multiple and/or zero singular values appear.

Abstract:A class of constraint preconditioners for solving two-by-two block linear equations with the (1,2)-block being the transpose of the (2,1)-block and the (2,2)-block being zero was investigated in a recent paper of Cao (Numer Math. 2006; 103:47-61). In this short note, we extend his idea by allowing the (1,2)-block to be not equal to the transpose of the (2,1)-block.
