Abstract:A class of constraint preconditioners for solving two-by-two block linear equations with the (1,2)-block being the transpose of the (2,1)-block and the (2,2)-block being zero was investigated in a recent paper of Cao (Numer Math. 2006; 103:47-61). In this short note, we extend his idea by allowing the (1,2)-block to be not equal to the transpose of the (2,1)-block. Results concerning the spectrum, the form of the eigenvectors and the convergence behaviour of a Krylov subspace method, such as GMRES are presented. Copyright (c) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We study the eigenvalue bounds of block two-by-two nonsingular and symmetric indefinite matrices whose $(1,1)$ block is symmetric positive definite and Schur complement with respect to its $(2,2)$ block is symmetric indefinite. A constraint preconditioner for this matrix is constructed by simply replacing the $(1,1)$ block by a symmetric and positive definite approximation, and the spectral properties of the preconditioned matrix are discussed. Numerical results show that, for a suitably chosen $(1,1)$ block-matrix, this constraint preconditioner outperforms the block-diagonal and the block-tridiagonal ones in iteration step and computing time when they are used to accelerate the GMRES method for solving these block two-by-two symmetric positive indefinite linear systems. The new results extend the existing ones about block two-by-two matrices of symmetric negative semidefinite $(2,2)$ blocks to those of general symmetric $(2,2)$ blocks.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the preconditioners of Sturler and Liesen [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 26(2005): 1598-1619]. The spectral characteristics of the preconditioners are investigated and the results show that all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are strongly clustered. Finally, numerical experiments are also reported for illustrating the efficiency of the presented preconditioners.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the eigenvalues properties of the general saddle point problem with preconditioners which contain a real parameter alpha. We will give the minimal polynomial of these preconditioned matrix and show that the eigenvalues of preconditioned matrix are real, and the exact Schur complement leads to preconditioned matrix with exactly two or exactly three distinct eigenvalues which are the function of the parameter alpha.

Abstract:Linear systems with M-matrices often occur in a wide variety of areas including scientific computing, operations research, stochastic analysis and economics. In this paper, we use a new preconditioner for solving such a kind of system by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. We show that our preconditioner can obtain a fast convergence rate. A numerical example is also given.

Abstract:The solution of systems of linear(ized) equations lies at the heart of many problems in Scientific Computing. In particular for systems of large dimension, iterative methods are a primary approach. Stationary iterative methods are generally based on a matrix splitting, whereas for polynomial iterative methods such as Krylov subspace iteration, the splitting matrix is the preconditioner. The smoother in a multigrid method is generally a stationary or polynomial iteration. Here we consider real symmetric indefinite and complex Hermitian indefinite coefficient matrices and prove that no splitting matrix can lead to a contractive stationary iteration unless the inertia is exactly preserved. This has consequences for preconditioning for indefinite systems and smoothing for multigrid as we further describe.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive bounds for the complex eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix with a symmetric positive semidefinite (2, 2) block, that extend the corresponding previous bounds obtained by Bergamaschi. For the nonsymmetric saddle point problem, we propose a block diagonal preconditioner for the conjugate gradient method in a nonstandard inner product. Abstract:In this paper, first, by using the diagonally compensated reduction and incomplete Cholesky factorization methods, we construct a constraint preconditioner for solving symmetric positive definite linear systems and then we apply the preconditioner to solve the Helmholtz equations and Poisson equations. Second, according to theoretical analysis, we prove that the preconditioned iteration method is convergent. Third, in numerical experiments, we plot the distribution of the spectrum of the preconditioned matrix M−1A and give the solution time and number of iterations comparing to the results of [5, 19].

Abstract:We present a novel preconditioner for numerical solutions of large sparse linear systems with indefinite and asymmetric matrices. This new preconditioner named as product preconditioner(PS) is constructed by two fairly simple preconditioners. The distribution of eigenvalues and the form of the eigenvectors of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed. Moreover, an upper bound on the degree of the minimal polynomial is also studied. Numerical experiments with several examples show that the proposed PS performs better than block diagonal preconditioner(BD) and block triangular preconditioner (BT) as well as the constraint preconditioner(SC) in terms of the number of iteration and computational time.

Abstract:For a general infinite system of convex inequalities in a Banach space, we study the basic constraint qualification and its relationship with other fundamental concepts, including various versions of conditions of Slater type, the Mangasarian--Fromovitz constraint qualification, as well as the Pshenichnyi--Levin--Valadier property introduced by Li, Nahak, and Singer. Applications are given in the restricted range approximation problem, constrained optimization problems, as well as in the approximation problem with constraints by conditionally positive semidefinite functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of highly efficient preconditioners for the large sparse non-Hermitian positive definite systems of linear equations. The construction of the preconditioners is based on the Hermitian/skew-Hermitian splitting of the coefficient matrix. Abstract:Linear systems with M-matrices occur in a wide variety of areas including numerical partial differential equations, input-output production and growth models in economics, linear complementarity problems in operations research and Markov chains in stochastic analysis.In this paper, we propose a new preconditioner for solving a system with symmetric positive definite M-matrix by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. We show that our preconditioner increases the convergence rate of the PCG method and reduces the operation cost. Numerical results are given.

Liu, Modified iterative methods for nonnegative matrices and M-matrices linear systems, Comput. Math. Appl. 50 (2005) 1587–1602]. Three mathematical models are presented to seek the optimal parameter for these preconditioners. Numerical results are presented, which show the improvements on the convergence rate of the Jacobi type and Gauss–Seidel type preconditioned iterative methods.

Abstract:We present a valid lower bound for the real eigenvalues of a nonsymmetric saddle point matrix even if its $(2,2)$ block is singular. This bound, together with bounds introduced by Benzi and Simoncini in [Numer. Math., 103 (2006), pp. 173-196], is applied for the analysis of symmetric indefinite preconditioners and primal-based penalty preconditioners. Eigenvalue estimates for the Hermitian and skew-Hermitian splitting preconditioned saddle point matrices are also derived. The model problem of Stokes equations is used to illustrate the presented theoretical results.
