Abstract:Some new sufficient conditions are given, which ensure that the k -subdirect sum of Nekrasov matrices and strictly diagonally dominant matrices is in the class of Nekrasov matrices. In addition, several examples are also given to illustrate the conditions presented.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for the subdirect sum of a Nekrasov matrix and a strictly diagonally dominant matrix being still a Nekrasov matrix. Adopting this sufficient and necessary condition, we present several simple sufficient conditions ensuring that the subdirect sum of Nekrasov matrices is in the same class. Examples are reported to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:The concept of $ k $-subdirect sums of matrices, as a generalization of the usual sum and the direct sum, plays an important role in scientific computing. In this paper, we introduce a new subclass of $ S $-Nekrasov matrices, called $ \{i_0\} $-Nekrasov matrices, and some sufficient conditions are given which guarantee that the $ k $-subdirect sum $ A\bigoplus_k B $ is an $ \{i_0\} $-Nekrasov matrix, where $ A $ is an $ \{i_0\} $-Nekrasov matrix and $ B $ is a Nekrasov matrix. Numerical examples are reported to illustrate the conditions presented.

Abstract:This paper concerns the problem of the k-subdirect sum of two H-matrices. Some sufficient conditions are given such that the k-subdirect sum of two H-matrices is an H-matrix. Our main results generalize the one provided by Bru, Pedroche and Szyld [Subdirect sums of M -matrices and of their inverse, Electron. J. Linear Algebra, 13,162-174(2005)]. Furthermore, the subdirect sum of block strictly diagonally dominant (BSDD) matrices is also researched. Examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results presented.

Abstract:We describe recent work of Kim in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1210.5190" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1210.5190">arXiv:1210.5190</a> to show that operator convex functions associated with quasi-entropies can be used to prove a large class of new matrix inequalities in the tri-partite and bi-partite setting by taking a judiciously chosen partial trace over all but one of the spaces. We give some additional examples in both settings. Furthermore, we observe that the equality conditions for all the new inequalities are essentially the same as those for strong subadditivity.

Abstract:We first propose a new error bound for the linear complementarity problems when the involved matrices are generalized Nekrasov matrices, which generalizes the recent result obtained by Li et al. (Numer. Algorithms 74:997–1009, 2017). Then we present two new error bounds for the linear complementarity problems when the involved matrices are Nekrasov matrices. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:Tian and Styan have shown many rank equalities for the sum of two and three idempotent matrices and pointed out that rank equalities for the sum P 1 + ⋯ + P k with P 1 , ... , P k be idempotent ( k > 3 ) are still open. In this paper, by using block Gaussian elimination, we obtained rank equalities for the sum of finitely many idempotent matrices and then solved the open problem mentioned above. Extensions to scalar-potent matrices and some related matrices are also included.

Abstract:The following theorem is proved: Suppose $M = (a_{i,j})$ be a $k \times k$ matrix with positive entries and $a_{i,j}a_{i+1,j+1} > 4\cos ^2 \frac{\pi}{k+1} a_{i,j+1}a_{i+1,j} \quad (1 \leq i \leq k-1, 1 \leq j \leq k-1).$ Then $\det M > 0 .$ The constant $4\cos ^2 \frac{\pi}{k+1}$ in this Theorem is sharp. A few other results concerning totally positive and multiply positive matrices are obtained. In this paper, we focus on the subdirect sum of $ GSD{D_1} $ matrices, and some sufficient conditions to ensure that the subdirect sum of $ GSD{D_1} $ matrices with strictly diagonally dominant $ \left({SDD} \right) $ matrices is in the class of $ GSD{D_1} $ matrices are given. Moreover, corresponding examples are given to illustrate our results.

Abstract:The infinity norm bounds for the inverse of Nekrasov matrices play an important role in scientific computing. We in this paper propose a triangulation-based approach that can easily be implemented to seek sharper infinity norm bounds for the inverse of Nekrasov matrices. With the help of such sharper bounds, new error estimates for the linear complementarity problem of Nekrasov matrices are presented, and a new infinity norm estimate of the iterative matrix of parallel-in-time methods for an all-at-once system from Volterra partial integral-differential problems is given. Finally, these new bounds are compared with other state-of-the-art results so that the effectiveness of our proposed results is verified.

Exponential Erdős-Szekeres theorem for matrices

Abstract:In 1993, Fishburn and Graham established the following qualitative extension of the classical Erdős-Szekeres theorem. If $N$ is sufficiently large with respect to $n$, then any $N\times N$ real matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix in which every row and every column is monotone. We prove that the smallest such $N$ is at most $2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$, greatly improving the previously best known double-exponential upper bound, and getting close to the best known lower bound $n^{n/2}$. In particular, we prove the following surprising sharp transition in the asymmetric setting. On one hand, every $8n^2\times 2^{n^{4+o(1)}}$ matrix contains an $n\times n$ submatrix, in which every row is mononote. On the other hand, there exist $n^{2}/6\times 2^{2^{n^{1-o(1)}}}$ matrices containing no such submatrix .

Abstract:The H-matrices are an important class in the matrix theory, and have many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order ?-tensors. In this paper, we establish important properties of diagonally dominant tensors and ?-tensors. Distributions of eigenvalues of nonsingular symmetric ?-tensors are given. An ?+-tensor is semi-positive, which enlarges the area of semi-positive tensor from ?-tensor to ?+-tensor. The spectral radius of Jacobi tensor of a nonsingular (resp. singular) ?-tensor is less than (resp. equal to) one. In particular, we show that a quasi-diagonally dominant tensor is a nonsingular ?-tensor if and only if all of its principal sub-tensors are nonsingular ?-tensors. An irreducible tensor Ais an ?-tensor if and only if it is quasi-diagonally dominant.
