Abstract:In the last article of this series we will first explain how Artin's reciprocity law for unramified abelian extensions can be formulated with the help of power residue symbols, and then show that, in this case, Artin's reciprocity law was already stated by Bernstein in the case where the base field contains the roots of unity necessary for realizing the Hilbert class field as a Kummer extension. Bernstein's article appeared in 1904, almost 20 years before Artin conjectured his version of the reciprocity law, and seems to have been overlooked completely.

Abstract:Cubic and biquadratic reciprocity have long since been referred to as "the forgotten reciprocity laws", largely since they provide special conditions that are widely considered to be unnecessary in the study of number theory. In this exposition of finite fields and higher reciprocity, we will begin by introducing concepts in abstract algebra and elementary number theory. This will motivate our approach toward understanding the structure and then existence of finite fields, especially with a focus on understanding the multiplicative group $\mathbb{F}^{*}$. While surveying finite fields we will provide another proof of quadratic reciprocity. We will proceed to investigate properties of the general multiplicative character, covering the concept of a general Gauss sum as well as basic notions of the Jacobi sum. From there we will begin laying the foundations for the cubic reciprocity law, beginning with a classification of the primes and units of the Eisenstein integers, denoted $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$, and further investigations into the residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]/\pi\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ for $\pi$ prime, which is predominantly the world in which cubic reciprocity lies. We then define the cubic residue character and state the full law of cubic reciprocity. We will finish the section on cubic reciprocity with a brief survey of the cubic residue character of the even prime $2$ and state a significant result due to Gauss that summarizes the conditions for $2$ to be a cubic residue. We conclude with a brief survey of the law of biquadratic reciprocity.

Abstract:In this paper we construct an algebraic invariant attached to Galois representations over number fields. This invariant, which we call an Artin symmetric function, lives in a certain ring we introduce called the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions. This ring is built from a family of symmetric functions rings indexed by prime ideals of the base field. We prove many necessary basic results for the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions as well as introduce the analogues of some standard number-theoretic objects in this setting. We prove that the Artin symmetric functions satisfy the same algebraic properties that the Artin L-functions do with respect to induction, inflation, and direct summation of representations. The expansion coefficients of these symmetric functions in different natural bases are shown to be character values of representations of a compact group related to the original Galois group. In the most interesting case, the expansion coefficients into a specialized Hall-Littlewood basis come from new representations built from the original Galois representation using polynomial functors corresponding to modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Using a special case of the Satake isomorphism in type GL, as formulated by Macdonald, we show that the Artin symmetric functions yield families of functions in the (finite) global spherical Hecke algebras in type GL which exhibit natural stability properties. We compute the Mellin transforms of these functions and relate them to infinite products of shifted Artin L-functions. We then prove some analytic properties of these Dirichlet series and give an explicit expansion of these series using the Hall-Littlewood polynomial functors.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to offer a general theory of reciprocity laws for symbols on arbitrary vector spaces, and to show that classical explicit reciprocity laws are particular cases of this theory (sum of valuations on a complete curve, Residue Theorem, Weil Reciprocity Law and the Reciprocity Law for the Hilbert Norm Residue Symbol). Moreover, several reciprocity laws introduced over the past few years by D. V. Osipov, A. N. Parshin, I. Horozov, I. Horozov - M. Kerr and the author -together with D. Hernández Serrano-, can also be deduced from this general expression.

Abstract:We construct three-variable $p$-adic families of Galois cohomology classes attached to Rankin convolutions of modular forms, and prove an explicit reciprocity law relating these classes to critical values of L-functions. As a consequence, we prove finiteness results for the Selmer group of an elliptic curve twisted by a 2-dimensional odd irreducible Artin representation when the associated $L$-value does not vanish.

Abstract:We produce a new proof of the reciprocity law for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet L-functions that was recently proved by Conrey. Our method is to analyze certain two-variable sums where the variables satisfy a linear congruence. We show that these sums satisfy an elegant reciprocity formula. In the case that the modulus is prime, these sums are closely related to the twisted second moment, and the reciprocity formula for these sums implies Conrey's reciprocity formula. We also extend the range of uniformity of Conrey's formula.

Abstract:We indulge in what mathematicians call frivolous activities. In Arithmetic Billiards, a ball is bouncing around in a rectangle. In Parity Checkers we place checkers on a checkerboard under certain parity constraints. Both activities turn out to capture the division of congruence classes modulo a prime into squares and non-squares, allowing fairly simple proofs of the celebrated Law of Quadratic Reciprocity. Since the activities are analyzed somewhat in parallel we don't obtain two independent proofs. But Franz Lemmermeyer's online list of reciprocity proofs already contains well over three hundred items, which seems enough anyway.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we introduce new local symbols, which we call 4-function local symbols. We formulate reciprocity laws for them. These reciprocity laws are proven using a new method - multidimensional iterated integrals. Besides providing reciprocity laws for the new 4-function local symbols, the same method works for proving reciprocity laws for the Parshin symbol. Both the new 4-function local symbols and the Parshin symbol can be expressed as a finite product of newly defined bi-local symbols, each of which satisfies a reciprocity law. The K -theoretic variant of the first 4-function local symbol is defined in the Appendix. It differs by a sign from the one defined via iterated integrals. Both the sign and the K -theoretic variant of the 4-function local symbol satisfy reciprocity laws, whose proof is based on Milnor K -theory (see the Appendix). The relation of the 4-function local symbols to the double free loop space of the surface is given by iterated integrals over membranes.
