Abstract:Cubic and biquadratic reciprocity have long since been referred to as "the forgotten reciprocity laws", largely since they provide special conditions that are widely considered to be unnecessary in the study of number theory. In this exposition of finite fields and higher reciprocity, we will begin by introducing concepts in abstract algebra and elementary number theory. This will motivate our approach toward understanding the structure and then existence of finite fields, especially with a focus on understanding the multiplicative group $\mathbb{F}^{*}$. While surveying finite fields we will provide another proof of quadratic reciprocity. We will proceed to investigate properties of the general multiplicative character, covering the concept of a general Gauss sum as well as basic notions of the Jacobi sum. From there we will begin laying the foundations for the cubic reciprocity law, beginning with a classification of the primes and units of the Eisenstein integers, denoted $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$, and further investigations into the residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}[\omega]/\pi\mathbb{Z}[\omega]$ for $\pi$ prime, which is predominantly the world in which cubic reciprocity lies. We then define the cubic residue character and state the full law of cubic reciprocity. We will finish the section on cubic reciprocity with a brief survey of the cubic residue character of the even prime $2$ and state a significant result due to Gauss that summarizes the conditions for $2$ to be a cubic residue. We conclude with a brief survey of the law of biquadratic reciprocity.

Abstract:In the last article of this series we will first explain how Artin's reciprocity law for unramified abelian extensions can be formulated with the help of power residue symbols, and then show that, in this case, Artin's reciprocity law was already stated by Bernstein in the case where the base field contains the roots of unity necessary for realizing the Hilbert class field as a Kummer extension. Bernstein's article appeared in 1904, almost 20 years before Artin conjectured his version of the reciprocity law, and seems to have been overlooked completely.

Abstract:Let $s(a,b)$ denote the classical Dedekind sum and $S(a,b)=12s(a,b)$. Recently, Du and Zhang proved the following reciprocity formula. If $a$ and $b$ are odd natural numbers, $(a,b)=1$, then $$ S(2a^*,b)+S(2b^*,a)=\frac{a^2+b^2+4}{2ab}-3, $$ where $aa^*\equiv 1\mod b$ and $bb^* \equiv 1 \mod a$. In this paper we show that this formula is a special case of a series of similar reciprocity formulas. Whereas Du and Zhang worked with the connection of Dedekind sums and values of $L$-series, our main tool is the three-term relation for Dedekind sums.

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$ of $n$, the {\it Schur functor} $\mathbb{S}_\lambda$ associates to any complex vector space $V$, a subspace $\mathbb{S}_\lambda(V)$ of $V^{\otimes n}$. Hermite's reciprocity law, in terms of the Schur functor, states that $ \mathbb{S}_{(p)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(q)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_{(q)}\left(\mathbb{S}_{(p)}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right). $ We extend this identity to many other identities of the type $\mathbb{S}_{\lambda}\left(\mathbb{S}_{\delta}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)\simeq \mathbb{S}_{\mu}\left(\mathbb{S}_{\epsilon}(\mathbb{C}^2)\right)$.

An explicit version of Shimura's reciprocity law for Siegel modular functions

Abstract:We give an explicit version of Shimura's reciprocity law for singular values of Siegel modular functions. We use this to construct the first examples of class invariants of quartic CM fields that are smaller than Igusa invariants. Our statement also enables a new proof of Shimura's reciprocity law by Tonghai Yang.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish an explicit higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring over a nonprincipal ultraproduct of finite fields. Such an ultraproduct can be taken over the same finite field, which allows to recover the classical higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring Fq[t] over a finite field Fq that is due to Dedekind, Kühne, Artin, and Schmidt. On the other hand, when the ultraproduct is taken over finite fields of unbounded cardinalities, we obtain an explicit higher reciprocity law for the polynomial ring over an infinite field in both characteristics 0 and p>0 for some prime p . We then use the higher reciprocity law to prove an analogue of the Grunwald–Wang theorem for such a polynomial ring in both characteristics 0 and p>0 for some prime p .

Abstract:We construct three-variable $p$-adic families of Galois cohomology classes attached to Rankin convolutions of modular forms, and prove an explicit reciprocity law relating these classes to critical values of L-functions. As a consequence, we prove finiteness results for the Selmer group of an elliptic curve twisted by a 2-dimensional odd irreducible Artin representation when the associated $L$-value does not vanish.

Abstract:We produce a new proof of the reciprocity law for the twisted second moment of Dirichlet L-functions that was recently proved by Conrey. Our method is to analyze certain two-variable sums where the variables satisfy a linear congruence. We show that these sums satisfy an elegant reciprocity formula. In the case that the modulus is prime, these sums are closely related to the twisted second moment, and the reciprocity formula for these sums implies Conrey's reciprocity formula. We also extend the range of uniformity of Conrey's formula.

Abstract:The determinant of a skew-symmetric matrix has a canonical square root given by the Pfaffian. Similarly, the resultant of two reciprocal polynomials of even degree has a canonical square root given by their reciprocant. Computing the reciprocant of two cyclotomic polynomials yields a short and elegant proof of the Law of Quadratic Reciprocity.

Abstract:We indulge in what mathematicians call frivolous activities. In Arithmetic Billiards, a ball is bouncing around in a rectangle. In Parity Checkers we place checkers on a checkerboard under certain parity constraints. Both activities turn out to capture the division of congruence classes modulo a prime into squares and non-squares, allowing fairly simple proofs of the celebrated Law of Quadratic Reciprocity. Since the activities are analyzed somewhat in parallel we don't obtain two independent proofs. But Franz Lemmermeyer's online list of reciprocity proofs already contains well over three hundred items, which seems enough anyway.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to offer a general theory of reciprocity laws for symbols on arbitrary vector spaces, and to show that classical explicit reciprocity laws are particular cases of this theory (sum of valuations on a complete curve, Residue Theorem, Weil Reciprocity Law and the Reciprocity Law for the Hilbert Norm Residue Symbol). Moreover, several reciprocity laws introduced over the past few years by D. V. Osipov, A. N. Parshin, I. Horozov, I. Horozov - M. Kerr and the author -together with D. Hernández Serrano-, can also be deduced from this general expression.
