Abstract:Inspired by the works of L. Carlitz and Z.-W. Sun on cyclotomic matrices, in this paper, we investigate certain cyclotomic matrices involving Gauss sums over finite fields, which can be viewed as finite field analogues of certain matrices related to the Gamma function.

Abstract:Let $q=p^n$ be an odd prime power and let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. Let $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$ be the group of all multiplicative characters of $\mathbb{F}_q$ and let $\chi$ be a generator of $\widehat{\mathbb{F}_q^{\times}}$. In this paper, we investigate arithmetic properties of certain cyclotomic matrices involving nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For example, let $s_1,s_2,\cdots,s_{(q-1)/2}$ be all nonzero squares over $\mathbb{F}_q$. For any integer $1\le r\le q-2$, define the matrix $$B_{q,2}(\chi^r):=\left[\chi^r(s_i+s_j)+\chi^r(s_i-s_j)\right]_{1\le i,j\le (q-1)/2}.$$ We prove that if $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$, then $$\det (B_{q,2}(\chi^r))=\prod_{0\le k\le (q-3)/2}J_q(\chi^r,\chi^{2k})= \begin{cases} (-1)^{\frac{q-3}{4}}{\bf i}^nG_q(\chi^r)^{\frac{q-1}{2}}/\sqrt{q} & \mbox{if}\ r\equiv 1\pmod 2,\\ G_q(\chi^r)^{\frac{q-1}{2}}/q & \mbox{if}\ r\equiv 0\pmod 2, \end{cases}$$ where $J_q(\chi^r,\chi^{2k})$ and $G_q(\chi^r)$ are the Jacobi sum and the Gauss sum over $\mathbb{F}_q$ respectively.

Abstract:The classical quadratic Gauss sum can be thought of as an exponential sum attached to a quadratic form on a cyclic group. We introduce an equivariant version of Gauss sum for arbitrary finite quadratic forms, which is an exponential sum twisted by the action of the orthogonal group. We prove that simple arithmetic formulae hold for some basic classes of quadratic forms. In application, such invariant appears in the dimension formula for certain vector-valued modular forms.

Abstract:We study four sums including the Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker, Bump--Friedberg, and Jacquet--Shalika sums associated to irreducible cuspidal representations of general linear groups over finite fields. By computing explicitly, we relate Asai and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors over finite fields to those over nonarchimedean local fields through level zero supercuspidal representation. Via Deligne--Kazhdan close field theory, we prove that exterior square and Bump--Friedberg gamma factors agree with corresponding Artin gamma factors of their associated tamely ramified representations through local Langlands correspondence. We also deduce product formulae for Asai, Bump--Friedberg, and exterior square gamma factors in terms of Gauss sums. By combining these results, we examine Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika, Flicker--Rallis, Jacquet--Shalika, and Friedberg--Jacquet periods and vectors and their connections to Rankin-Selberg, Asai, exterior square, and Bump-Friedberg gamma factors, respectively.

To state the first result of this paper, we also fix r distinct multiplicative characters χ1,...,χ r for each finite field F q with more than r elements. Abstract:Galois rings and exponential sums over Galois rings have many applications in algebraic combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography. In this paper, we present explicit description on the Gauss sums and Jacobi sums over Galois ring GR(p 2, r), and show that the values of these sums can be reduced to the Gauss sums and Jacobi sums over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{p^r }$ for all non-trivial cases.

We provide lower bounds for the cardinality of a subset of the matrix algebra over a finite field such that its distance set is the whole matrix algebra. Abstract:Using the weak field approximation, we can express the theory of general relativity in a Maxwell-type structure comparable to electromagnetism. We find that every electromagnetic field is coupled to a gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic field. Acknowledging the fact that both fields originate from the same source, the particle, we can express the magnetic and electric field through their gravitational respective analogues using the proportionality coefficient k. This coefficient depends on the ratio of mass and charge and the ratio between the electromagnetic and gravitic-gravitomagnetic permittivity and permeability respectively. Although the coefficient is very small, the fact that electromagnetic fields in material media can be used to generate gravitational and gravitomagnetic fields and vice versa is not commonly known. We find that the coupling coefficient can be increased by massive ion currents, electron and nuclear spin-alignment. Advances in material sciences, cryogenic technology and high frequency electromagnetic fields in material media may lead to applications of the derived relationships.

Bilinear forms with Kloosterman and Gauss sums in function fields

Abstract:In recent years, there has been a lot of progress in obtaining non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman sums in $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$ for arbitrary integers $m$. These results have been motivated by a wide variety of applications, such as improved asymptotic formulas for moments of $L$-functions. However, there has been very little work done in this area in the setting of rational function fields over finite fields. We remedy this and provide a number of new non-trivial bounds for bilinear forms of Kloosterman and Gauss sums in this setting, based on new bounds on the number of solutions to certain modular congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$ .

Abstract:The classical problem of whether mmth-powers with or without zero in a finite field Fq\mathbb {F}_q form a difference set has been extensively studied, and is related to many topics, such as flag transitive finite projective planes. In this paper new necessary and sufficient conditions are established including those via a system of polynomial equations on Gauss sums. The author thereby solves the problem for even qq which is neglected in the literature, and extends the nonexistence list for even mm up to 2222. Moreover, conjectures toward the complete classification are posed.

Abstract:In this paper, explicit determination of the cyclotomic numbers of order l and 2 l , for odd prime l ≡ 3 (mod 4), over finite field 𝔽_q in the index 2 case are obtained, utilizing the explicit formulas on the corresponding Gauss sums. The main results in this paper are related with the number of rational points of certain elliptic curve, called “Legendre curve”, and the properties and value distribution of such number are also presented.

Abstract:We generalize Burgess' results on partial Gaussian sums to arbitrary finite fields. The main ingredients are the classical method of amplification, two deep results on multiplicative energy for subsets in finite fields which are obtained respectively by the tools from additive combinatorics and geometry of numbers, and a technique of Chamizo for treating the difficulty caused by additive character. Our results include the recent works on character sums in finite fields by M.-C. Chang and S. V. Konyagin.

Under the assumptions [(ℤ/mℤ)* : 〈p〉] = 4 and −1 ∉ 〈p〉, the decomposition field of p in thecyclotomic field ℚ(ζ m ) is an imaginary quartic (abelian) field. And G (χ) is an integer in K. We dealwith the case where K is cyclic in this paper and leave the non–cyclic case to the next paper.

Abstract:We give a definition of generalized hypergeometric functions over finite fields using modified Gauss sums, which enables us to find clear analogy with classical hypergeometric functions over the complex numbers. We study their fundamental properties and prove summation formulas, transformation formulas and product formulas. An application to zeta functions of K3-surfaces is given. In the appendix, we give an elementary proof of the Davenport-Hasse multiplication formula for Gauss sums.

Abstract:We study the Gauss and Jacobi sums from a viewpoint of motives. We exhibit isomorphisms between Chow motives arising from the Artin-Schreier curve and the Fermat varieties over a finite field, that can be regarded as (and yield a new proof of) classically known relations among Gauss and Jacobi sums such as Davenport-Hasse's multiplication formula. As a key step, we define motivic analogues of the Gauss and Jacobi sums as algebraic correspondences, and show that they represent the Frobenius endomorphisms of such motives. This generalizes Coleman's result for curves. These results are applied to investigate the group of invertible Chow motives with coefficients in a cyclotomic field.
