Abstract:In a description of materials for orthotropic panels with a soft and/or corrugated core, it is important to correctly determine all constitutive parameters. In laboratory practice, the determination of transverse shear modulus is often overlooked. This paper presents a method for determining this property based on a plate torsion test and a correctly formulated analytical description. It has been proved that the transverse shear effect in some cases cannot be omitted because it significantly influences the mechanical behavior of corrugated board. The method of transverse shear modeling used so far can be modified to eliminate dimensionless, physically unjustified coefficient and replace them with coefficients that have a physical basis. It is shown here that such modification leads to results with lower error. The effective modeling of transverse shear effects enables a more conscious design of corrugated board structures, where the final goal is to obtain packaging with high strength and durability but low material consumption.

Abstract:This special issue presents the latest advances in the field of Textile-Reinforced Cement Composites, including Textile-Reinforced Concrete (TRC), Textile-Reinforced Mortar (TRM), Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM), etc. These composite materials distinguish themselves from other fibre reinforced concrete materials by their strain-hardening behaviour under tensile loading. This Special Issue is composed of 14 papers covering new insights in structural and material engineering. The papers include investigations on the level of the fibre reinforcement system as well as on the level of the composites, investigating their impact and fatigue behaviour, durability and fire behaviour. Both strengthening of existing structures and development of new structural systems such as lightweight sandwich systems are presented, and analysis and design methods are discussed. This Special Issue demonstrates the broadness and intensity of the ongoing advancements in the field of Textile-Reinforced Cement composites and the importance of several future research directions.

Abstract:An important step towards improving performance while reducing weight and maintenance needs is the integration of composite materials into mechanical and aerospace engineering. This subject explores the many aspects of composite application, from basic material characterization to state-of-the-art advances in manufacturing and design processes. The major goal is to present the most recent developments in composite science and technology while highlighting their critical significance in the industrial sector-most notably in the wind energy, automotive, aerospace, and marine domains. The foundation of this investigation is material characterization, which offers insights into the mechanical, chemical, and physical characteristics that determine composite performance. The papers in this collection discuss the difficulties of gaining an in-depth understanding of composites, which is necessary to maximize their overall performance and design. The collection of articles within this topic addresses the challenges of achieving a profound understanding of composites, which is essential for optimizing design and overall functionality. This includes the application of complicated material modeling together with cutting-edge simulation tools that integrate multiscale methods and multiphysics, the creation of novel characterization techniques, and the integration of nanotechnology and additive manufacturing. This topic offers a detailed overview of the current state and future directions of composite research, covering experimental studies, theoretical evaluations, and numerical simulations. Abstract:Composite materials play a vital role in modern engineering from aerospace to nuclear devices. Computational mechanics endeavours to provide precise numerical models of composites. More recently, it has been necessary to take account of the stochastic nature of their behaviour indicated by experiment. The approach of Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials lays stress on the advantages of combining theoretical advancements in applied mathematics and mechanics with the probabilistic approach to experimental data in meeting the practical needs of engineers. Features: Programs for the probabilistic homogenisation of composite structures with finite numbers of components allow composites to be treated as homogeneous materials with simpler behaviours. Allows treatment of defects in the interfaces within heterogeneous materials and those arising in composite objects as a whole by stochastic modelling. Provides new models for the reliability of composite structures. Propounds novel numerical algorithms for more effective Monte-Carlo simulation. Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials will be of interest to academic and practising civil, mechanical, electronic and aerospatial engineers, to materials scientists and to applied mathematicians requiring accurate and usable models of the behaviour of composite materials. The Engineering Materials and Processes series focuses on all forms of materials and the processes used to synthesise and formulate them as they relate to the various engineering disciplines. The series deals with a diverse range of materials: ceramics; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous); semiconductors; composites, polymers biomimetics etc. Each monograph in the series will be written by a specialist and will demonstrate how enhancements in materials and the processes associated with them can improve performance in the field of engineering in which they are used.

Abstract:Current research studies take a mechanism-based approach rather than a purely empirical one to identify factors pertinent to manufacturing processes and composition/microstructure parameters that influence the fatigue performance of advanced materials and, hopefully, to guide further improvement and the insertion of new materials for advanced engineering applications. In this special issue, Fatigue in Advanced Materials, twenty-seven research articles are published. The subjects are multidisciplinary and divided into several topics including: (i) fatigue and fracture of additively manufactured materials, (ii) microstructure, micro-scale effects, and mechanical properties, (iii) surrogate approaches applied to mechanical properties relevant to fatigue and fracture, (iv) probabilistic modeling for fatigue life prediction, (v) analytical and numerical fatigue approaches of materials and components, and (vi) other related themes. Abstract:This article focuses on the computational analysis of sandwich composite materials based on polypropylene, polyester, glass, and cotton fibers. In the automotive components prepared from these fiber materials, the various components are used in different proportions. Through the manufacturing process, isotropic materials become somewhat anisotropic. Part of this article is aimed at obtaining input values of material characteristics for calculations using finite element analysis (FEM) and the comparison of experimental results with FEM-based material models created using the Digimat 2023.1 software. This article analyzes the modeling of two-phase as well as multiphase composite materials. This work focuses on calculations using FEM according to the test defined in the PR375 standard for loading the finished product in the luggage compartment of a car. The defined methodology enables the application of the FEM-based calculation directly to the product design in the initial phase of research. The construction and production of expensive prototypes and the subsequent production of automotive parts is replaced by computer-based simulation. This procedure makes it possible to simulate several optimization cycles over a relatively shorter time. From the results of computational simulations, it is clear that materials based on PP/PET/glass fibers show a much higher modulus of elasticity than materials created using cotton, i.e., materials of the PP/PET/cotton type. In order to achieve a high strength and stiffness, it is, therefore, appropriate to use glass fibers in the composite materials used for such applications.
