Abstract:This represents the second volume of a special issue dedicated to Bioderived and Bioinspired Sustainable Materials. The volume starts with a comprehensive review on the very important topic of polymers upcycling co-authored by Johannes DeVries, Head of Department 'Catalysis with renewable resources' at Leibniz Institute for Catalysis in Rostock. This review is followed by two research papers on the utilization/transformation of bio-based precursors into useful high value advanced materials such as 'Bio-based 2-thiothiophenes' as exemplified by Jonathan Sperry et al. from The University of Auckland on New Zealand, Dr Zoe Schnepp form University of Birmingham, UK on using 'Milling as a route to porous graphitic carbons from biomass' as well as Lars Bostan from Faserinstitut Bremen e.V together with Omid Hosseinaei from RISE Research Institutes of Sweden describing 'Upscaling of lignin precursor melt-spinning by bicomponent spinning and its use for carbon fibre production'. These papers are followed by a series of research papers on the use of materials derived from bio-based precursors in energy storage and conversion technologies. Oxygen reduction reaction is a key reaction occurring at the cathodes of fuel cells to generate CO2 free electricity using H2. Ulrike Kramm et al. from the University of Darmstadt have conducted a 'Systematic study of precursor effects on structure and oxygen reduction reaction activity of FeNC catalysts' in order to establish meaningful structure-function correlations of critical importance to advance the fundamental understanding of this important area of research. Similarly, Yasuto Goto and Masaru Watanabe from Tohoku University in Japan performed and published a study on 'Synthesis of unused-wood-derived C-Fe-N catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction by heteroatom doping during hydrothermal carbonization and subsequent carbonization in nitrogen atmosphere'.
