Abstract:An important step towards improving performance while reducing weight and maintenance needs is the integration of composite materials into mechanical and aerospace engineering. This subject explores the many aspects of composite application, from basic material characterization to state-of-the-art advances in manufacturing and design processes. The major goal is to present the most recent developments in composite science and technology while highlighting their critical significance in the industrial sector-most notably in the wind energy, automotive, aerospace, and marine domains. The foundation of this investigation is material characterization, which offers insights into the mechanical, chemical, and physical characteristics that determine composite performance. The papers in this collection discuss the difficulties of gaining an in-depth understanding of composites, which is necessary to maximize their overall performance and design. The collection of articles within this topic addresses the challenges of achieving a profound understanding of composites, which is essential for optimizing design and overall functionality. This includes the application of complicated material modeling together with cutting-edge simulation tools that integrate multiscale methods and multiphysics, the creation of novel characterization techniques, and the integration of nanotechnology and additive manufacturing. This topic offers a detailed overview of the current state and future directions of composite research, covering experimental studies, theoretical evaluations, and numerical simulations. Abstract:The environmental changing and the innovative production methods have made advanced composite materials essential for the modern societies. Due to their unique properties, such multimaterial systems have found use in a variety of contemporary contexts. In this work, the implementations of composite materials in automotive, aerospace, marine, sport, defense, structural, and building applications have been debated and explored systematically. Composite materials have been shown to be superior to traditional materials in a number of ways, such as their ability to reduce system weight, which leads to significant energy savings and enhanced performance in a number of different contexts. Also taken into account was the feasibility of mass-producing composite material systems meeting the needs of a variety of designs with varying degrees of complexity in order to allow for extensive leeway in the creation of new shapes, while keeping the number of individual parts to a minimum. Moreover, there is the option to pick and choose the components in order to tweak them until they have the desired properties and functionality. Thus, this work demonstrates the advantages of adopting composite materials in a variety of industries to improve designers’ and decision makers’ comprehension of the characteristic-performance scheme in the field of composite systems.

Abstract:The development of high-performance polymers continues to grow in both academia and industry due to their numerous benefits for society and diverse commercial potential. Further, polymer materials with varied functional properties can be modified through blends and composites to enhance their performance. The unique functional, thermal, and mechanical characteristics, along with the ease of processing, have created new opportunities for product applications in various sectors, including packaging, agriculture, energy, automobiles, infrastructure, retail, aerospace, defense, and other growing industries. This review primarily focuses on the scientific and technological advances in high-performance materials such as polyolefins and elastomers, as well as their composites. Furthermore, it addresses the environmental concerns arising from plastic mismanagement, emphasizing sustainability aspects, including the circular economy and the development of biodegradable, bio-compostable and bio-based polymers. The review also discusses new directions in polymer science and engineering, such as life cycle management, flexible manufacturing, and the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning to accelerate sustainable development.

Abstract:Commodity thermoplastics and thermoplastic composites are staples in Additive Manufacturing (AM). Their use is widespread and accounts for the largest volume of 3D printed materials. Accessible property ranges of current material formulations are limited, and thus there is high interest in extending AM to high-performance engineering polymers and nanocomposites that have yet to gain wide commercial acceptance in AM. Current applications of high-performance thermoplastic polymers are limited to adaptations from conventional plastics processing such as injection molding, thermoforming, extrusion, and others. Thermoplastic composites can be categorized into particle-, fiber-, and nanomaterial-based composites as well as polymer blends. The importance of these different composite systems to AM is discussed in this review. Also reviewed are trends in instrument development such as in-nozzle impregnation, dual print heads, and higher temperature FDM that improve printing of thermoplastic composites. An overview of newer types of AM techniques allowing higher filler loading for thermoplastic composites like liquid deposition modeling (LDM) sometimes known as direct ink writing (DIW) are discussed. Finally, a perspective is given on the important parameters and standards needed to make AM printed objects from polymer composites more effective in cost/performance ratio.

Abstract:Composite materials play a vital role in modern engineering from aerospace to nuclear devices. Computational mechanics endeavours to provide precise numerical models of composites. More recently, it has been necessary to take account of the stochastic nature of their behaviour indicated by experiment. The approach of Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials lays stress on the advantages of combining theoretical advancements in applied mathematics and mechanics with the probabilistic approach to experimental data in meeting the practical needs of engineers. Features: Programs for the probabilistic homogenisation of composite structures with finite numbers of components allow composites to be treated as homogeneous materials with simpler behaviours. Allows treatment of defects in the interfaces within heterogeneous materials and those arising in composite objects as a whole by stochastic modelling. Provides new models for the reliability of composite structures. Propounds novel numerical algorithms for more effective Monte-Carlo simulation. Computational Mechanics of Composite Materials will be of interest to academic and practising civil, mechanical, electronic and aerospatial engineers, to materials scientists and to applied mathematicians requiring accurate and usable models of the behaviour of composite materials. The Engineering Materials and Processes series focuses on all forms of materials and the processes used to synthesise and formulate them as they relate to the various engineering disciplines. The series deals with a diverse range of materials: ceramics; metals (ferrous and non-ferrous); semiconductors; composites, polymers biomimetics etc. Each monograph in the series will be written by a specialist and will demonstrate how enhancements in materials and the processes associated with them can improve performance in the field of engineering in which they are used.

Abstract:<span>In recent years, new revolutionary paradigms generally indicated using the term Industry 4.0, have been conceived and are progressively applied in several manufacturing systems to achieve a smarter, more effective, and sustainable production. This article aims to depict the present and future scenarios related to the application of Industry 4.0 concepts to polymer composites manufacturing. To provide a view on future potential, and open new research frontiers, the article attempts to address through elaborate discussions two major questions: What is the future of fiber-reinforced polymer composites manufacturing in the Industry 4.0 context?What are the recent and potential developments in robotic and additive manufacturing of advanced fiber-reinforced composites?The article, in addition, connects new avenues in additive manufacturing, for instance, incorporating topology optimization, design opportunities, recent industrial developments in machines and patent disclosures, and defect detection/mitigation during manufacture. Similarly, recent developments concerning robotic Automated Fiber/Tape Placement have been provided, discussing state-of-the-art research trends and future opportunities.</span>

Abstract:The use of additive manufacturing (AM) has moved well beyond prototyping and has been established as a highly versatile manufacturing method with demonstrated potential to completely transform traditional manufacturing in the future. In this paper, a comprehensive review and critical analyses of the recent advances and achievements in the field of different AM processes for polymers, their composites and nanocomposites, elastomers and multi materials, shape memory polymers and thermo-responsive materials are presented. Moreover, their applications in different fields such as bio-medical, electronics, textiles, and aerospace industries are also discussed. We conclude the article with an account of further research needs and future perspectives of AM process with polymeric materials.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM), commonly referred to as 3D printing, has revolutionized the manufacturing landscape by enabling the intricate layer-by-layer construction of three-dimensional objects. In contrast to traditional methods relying on molds and tools, AM provides the flexibility to fabricate diverse components directly from digital models without the need for physical alterations to machinery. Four-dimensional printing is a revolutionary extension of 3D printing that introduces the dimension of time, enabling dynamic transformations in printed structures over predetermined periods. This comprehensive review focuses on polymeric materials in 3D printing, exploring their versatile processing capabilities, environmental adaptability, and applications across thermoplastics, thermosetting materials, elastomers, polymer composites, shape memory polymers (SMPs), including liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), and self-healing polymers for 4D printing. This review also examines recent advancements in microvascular and encapsulation self-healing mechanisms, explores the potential of supramolecular polymers, and highlights the latest progress in hybrid printing using polymer–metal and polymer–ceramic composites. Finally, this paper offers insights into potential challenges faced in the additive manufacturing of polymer composites and suggests avenues for future research in this dynamic and rapidly evolving field.
