Abstract:Advanced composite materials have excellent performance and broad engineering application prospects, and have received widespread attention in recent years. Advanced composite materials can mainly be divided into fiber-reinforced composite materials, laminated composite materials, matrix composite materials, and other composite materials. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the types and characteristics of advanced composite materials, and provides a comprehensive evaluation of the latest research on structural strengthening and resilience improvement in advanced composite materials from the perspectives of new methods, modeling optimization, and practical applications. In the field of fiber-reinforced composite materials, the hybrid technology of carbon fiber and glass fiber can achieve dual advantages in combining the two materials. The maximum increase in mechanical properties of multilayer sandwich RH plate by hybrid technology is 435.4% (tensile strength), 149.2% (flexural strength), and 110.7~114.2% (shear strength), respectively. In the field of laminated composite materials, different mechanical properties of laminated composite materials can be obtained by changing the deposition sequence. In the field of matrix composites, nano copper oxide particles prepared by nanotechnology can increase the hardness and tensile strength of the metal matrix material by 77% and 78%, respectively. In the field of other composite materials, viscoelastic materials and magnetorheological variants have received widespread attention. The development of composite materials benefits from the promotion of new methods and technologies, but there are still problems such as complex preparation, high cost, and unstable performance. Considering the characteristics, application requirements, cost, complexity, and performance of different types of composite materials, further improvements and innovations are needed in modeling and optimization to better meet practical engineering needs, such as the application of advanced composite materials in civil engineering, ships, automobiles, batteries, and other fields.

Abstract:The characters of advanced polymer matrix composite were briefly introduced.From the application point of view,a summary of such materials,as well as the current situation and future development of their major manufacturing processes,were given.The application history of advanced polymer matrix composites in aviation industry was reviewed,and the latest research results of the low temperature curing composites,E-beam technology curing composites,microwave absorbing structure composites,and nano-composites were reported.Finally the development emphasis of advanced polymer matrix composites was analyzed and discussed based on the requirements of domestic aircraft development.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing technology brings new revolutionary potential for the development of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Continuous carbon fiber reinforced composites developed using fused deposition modeling technology have the characteristics of high specific strength, high specific modulus, light weight, and flexible design, which is the solution direction for low-cost, rapid, and flexible application of advanced composite materials in the future. In this paper, the preparation of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites with continuous carbon fibers as reinforcement and thermoplastic/thermoset as matrix, surface modification and their mechanical properties are investigated, the interfacial characteristics and properties of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites under different pretreatment processes, auxiliary processes and post-treatment processes are studied, and the connection between the micro-morphology and the mechanical properties of this composite is further analyzed. The direction of defect resolution of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites fabricated by fused deposition technology is provided, and the future development direction is envisioned.

Abstract:Among the many potential applications of carbon nanotubes (CNT), its usage to strengthen polymers has been paid considerable attention due to the exceptional stiffness, excellent strength, and the low density of CNT. This has provided numerous opportunities for the invention of new material systems for applications requiring high strength and high modulus. Precise control over processing factors, including preserving intact CNT structure, uniform dispersion of CNT within the polymer matrix, effective filler-matrix interfacial interactions, and alignment/orientation of polymer chains/CNT, contribute to the composite fibers' superior properties. For this reason, fabrication methods play an important role in determining the composite fibers' microstructure and ultimate mechanical behavior. The current state-of-the-art polymer/CNT high-performance composite fibers, especially in regards to processing-structure-performance, are reviewed in this contribution. Future needs for material by design approaches for processing these nano-composite systems are also discussed.

Abstract:Nanomaterials currently commonly used for interfacial modification of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites exhibit excellent characteristics such as light weight, high specific strength, specific stiffness, and chemical stability, making them customizable to meet the specific demands of various sectors such as the automotive, aerospace, defense, biomedical, and energy industries. However, the inert surface of carbon fibers (CFs) results in a poor interface compatibility with polymer matrices, leading to numerous interfacial defects and pores in prepared CFRP composites. These drawbacks significantly limit the application of CFRP composites in high‐end fields. The higher surface area and smaller size of nanomaterials provide multiple advantages for high‐performance CFRP composites that enhance the mechanical properties, impact resistance and interface adhesion between the fiber and the matrix. Hence, this review firstly summarizes the interfacial behavior and interface enhancement mechanisms for CFRP composites. Subsequently, we comprehensively review the recent advances in various nanomaterials‐modified CFRP composites, including carbon‐based nanoparticles, silicon‐based nanomaterials and metal nanomaterials, et al. Besides, we also present the applications of CFRP in emerging fields, such as military, aerospace, automotive, sports equipment, and medical, etc. Finally, we also prospected the challenges and future development trends of CFRP composites, aiming to provide new ideas and insights for future research on nanomaterial modifications and promote the development of high‐performance CFRP composites. Highlights The interface reinforced theory of CFRP is comprehensively summarized. Different types of nanoparticles that can be used for reinforcement in CFRP composites and nanomaterials modification methods are reviewed. Application of CFRP composites in various fields is presented. Challenges and future development directions of preparation of high‐performance CFRP composites are proposed.

Abstract:The ability of fibre reinforced composites to deform with a non-linear stress-strain response and gradual, rather than sudden, catastrophic failure is reviewed. The principal mechanisms by which this behaviour can be achieved are discussed, including ductile fibres, progressive fibre fracture and fragmentation, fibre reorientation, and slip between discontinuous elements. It is shown that all these mechanisms allow additional strain to be achieved, enabling a yield-like behaviour to be generated. In some cases, the response is ductile and in others pseudo-ductile. Mechanisms can also be combined, and composites which give significant pseudo-ductile strain can be produced. Notch sensitivity is reduced, and there is the prospect of increasing design strains whilst also improving damage tolerance. The change in stiffness or visual indications of damage can be exploited to give warning that strain limits have been exceeded. Load carrying capacity is still maintained, allowing continued operation until repairs can be made. Areas for further work are identified which can contribute to creating structures made from high performance ductile or pseudo-ductile composites that fail gradually.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing (AM) has brought about a revolution in the way we can manufacture complex products with customized features. AM has paved its way in the application areas ranging from aerospace, automotive, consumer to biomedical. AM of composites has attracted special attention due to its promise in improving, modifying, and diversifying the properties of generic materials through introducing reinforcements. This review provides a detailed landscape of fiber‐reinforced composites processed via AM techniques. Different AM processes, various material formulations, and strengths and drawbacks of AM methods are discussed. Emphasis is paid to AM techniques focusing on continuous fibers, as they hold the promise of becoming the next‐generation composite fabrication methodology. The article also tries to identify the potential of AM technology for fiber‐reinforced composites and delves into challenges facing the area. Recent progress in the development of additive manufactured fiber reinforced polymer composite, fabricated using various AM techniques, is reviewed. Several important aspects of composite materials are focussed upon, which include 1) types of reinforcements and matrices; 2) good fiber‐to‐matrix bonding; 3) fiber homogeneity; 4) fiber alignment; 5) good interlayer bonding; and 6) minimal porosity.

Abstract:In this work, the progress of structural materials is reviewed, the strengthening mechanisms of different types of structures are highlighted, and the impact of architecture design on the performance of advanced materials is discussed. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of structural innovation of advanced materials in improving material properties are discussed. The natural design and coupling of biological structures are the root of realizing the high strength, toughness, and unique functional properties of biomaterials. Advanced architecture design is applied to many materials, including metal materials, inorganic nonmetallic materials, polymer materials, and so on. To improve the performance of advanced materials, the designed architecture can be enhanced by bionics of biological structure, optimization of structural parameters, and coupling of multiple types of structures. Herein, the progress of structural materials is reviewed, the strengthening mechanisms of different types of structures are highlighted, and the impact of architecture design on the performance of advanced materials is discussed. Architecture design can improve the properties of materials at the micro level, such as mechanical, electrical, and thermal conductivity. The synergistic effect of structure makes traditional materials move toward advanced functional materials, thus enriching the macroproperties of materials. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of structural innovation of advanced materials in improving material properties are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years,various advanced polymer materials such as graphene/polymer nanocomposites and high performance polymer composites are attracting more and more attention.In this review,the importances of different interfacial interactions between graphene and polymer matrices including hydrogen bonding,π-πstacking,covalent bonding and coordination bonding for fabrication of graphene/polymer nanocomposites are systematically summarized.Further,how to achieve high-performance polymer nanocomposites through blending is also described.Besides,because failure mechanism and lifetime prediction of materials are very important for their application,the effects of additives,stress and lubricants on ageing behavior of rubber seals are investigated.The failure mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Composites have been identified as the most promising and discriminating material now accessible in the twenty-first century. Currently, composites reinforced with high-performance fibers of synthetic or natural materials are gaining traction as the market's need for lightweight materials with high strength increases. Outstanding performance not only does a fiber-reinforced polymer composite have a high strength-to-weight ratio, but it also exhibits excellent qualities such as increased durability, stiffness, damping property, flexural strength, corrosion resistance, wear, impact, and fire. Composite materials have found uses in various industrial sectors, including mechanical, construction, aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and marine. Because their constituent elements and fabrication techniques primarily determine the performance of composite materials, it is necessary to investigate the functional properties of various fibers available worldwide, their classifications, and the fabrication techniques used to fabricate the composite materials. A survey of a broad range of high-performance fibers is offered, together with their qualities, functionality, categorization, and production procedures, to identify the optimal high-performance fiber-reinforced composite material for crucial applications. Due to their superior performance in a wide variety of applications, high-performance fiber-reinforced composite materials have emerged as a viable alternative to solo metals or alloys.

Abstract:AbstractThe inhomogeneous materials and composites with a high strength-to-weight ratio, high dimensional stability, and versatile design options are recognized as the potential next-generation and functional materials to replace the traditional ones. The advanced composites as major components have been deployed in the engineering fields of aerospace, automotive transportation, energy production involving the wind and nuclear power plants, and oil and gas productions. The presence of residual stress generated within the inhomogeneous materials and composites during manufacturing process has been recognized in engineering design practice. The machining-induced uncontrolled and undesirable residual stress in conjunction with morphological evolution of inhomogeneous structures at the microscale may significantly influence the mechanical performances and structural integrity of engineering composites. In this review, recent progresses of theoretical and experimental solutions for evaluating the residual stress distributions, the interacting effects of multiple reinforced microphases, effective properties, and homogenization of inhomogeneous composites are discussed. The analyses of thermal effect due to metallurgical processes and additively manufacturing are provided to elucidate the typical conditions, deformations, and fatigue behaviors in fiber-reinforced, metal-based, and ceramic composite materials, as well as the thin film and coating composites. In addition, this paper also reviews the quantitative evaluation of controlling mechanisms of residual stress and microstructural evolution in functional composites and provides future perspectives on the potential applications of inhomogeneous materials and composites for further development.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:This work provides an overview of recent advances in the polymer nanocompos-ites research. The key research opportunities and challenges in the development of carbon nanotube graphene, interfacial bonding strength in structural and functional nanocom-posites are addressed in the context of fiber reinforced polymer composites. The state of knowledge in mechanical and physical properties of polymer nanocomposite is presented with a particular emphasis on buckypaper enabled polymer nanocomposites, electrically and optically functional nanocomposites, smart and intelligent nanocomposites, and func-tional and multifunctional nanocomposites. Critical issues in the nanocomposites research and applications are discussed.

Abstract:Recently published research indicated that, in additive manufacturing fields, single fiber reinforcements often increased some mechanical properties of composites, but at the same time decreased other mechanical behaviors, leading to a limited application of single fiber filled composites in the industry. Therefore, 3D printed hybrid composites made from a combination of short/short fibers, short/continuous fibers, or continuous/continuous fibers have received significant attention from researchers, owing to the comprehensive performance improvements and tailored mechanical behaviors. This paper reviewed the state-of-the-art 3D printed hybrid composites and elaborated on their mechanical behaviors, application limitations, potential improvements and future perspectives. The review started with a detailed discussion of different existing hybrid composite printing methods. Then, the mechanical performance, deformation and failure behaviors of hybrid composites were discussed. Finally, this review explored the limitations of printed hybrid composites and looked forward to printing hybrid composite with improved performance.

Abstract:In recent years, much progress has been made on the development of aerospace materials for structural and engine applications. Alloys, such as Al-based alloys, Mg-based alloys, Ti-based alloys, and Ni-based alloys, are developed for aerospace industry with outstanding advantages. Composite materials, the innovative materials, are taking more and more important roles in aircrafts. However, recent aerospace materials still face some major challenges, such as insufficient mechanical properties, fretting wear, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion. Consequently, extensive studies have been conducted to develop the next generation aerospace materials with superior mechanical performance and corrosion resistance to achieve improvements in both performance and life cycle cost. This review focuses on the following topics: (1) materials requirements in design of aircraft structures and engines, (2) recent advances in the development of aerospace materials, (3) challenges faced by recent aerospace materials, and (4) future trends in aerospace materials.

Abstract:The Brief Overview of Bamboo Fiber Reinforced Polymeric Composites. Characterized by rapid maturation, short growth cycles, and high strength and toughness, bamboo can be compounded with polymers to produce bamboofiber reinforced polymeric composites (BFRPCs). These composites exhibit corrosion resistance comparable to traditional materials such as glass fiber and carbon fiber composites. Additionally, they possess features like low density, high strength, degradability, and environmental friendliness, with low production costs and strong industrial applicability. This paper reviews the accomplishments in BFRPCs and provides an overview of the production processes for BFRPCs. Furthermore, it summarizes the research status of mechanical properties, moisture absorption characteristics, interface performance, and flame retardancy of these composites. The current issues with BFRPCs were analyzed. Finally, the paper explores future research directions and potential applications of BFRPCs. Highlights The performance studies on BFRPCs are comprehensively presented. Composite processing of BFPRCs is reviewed. Pros and cons of various types of BFRPCs are analyzed. Overview of the applications of BFRPCs in various domains is presented. Future trends and challenges of BFRPCs are introduced.

Abstract:Abstract With the changes of modern warfare modes and the development of missiles and weapons, the battlefield survivability of military vehicles is facing severe challenges. Vehicles must have high protection performance and better mobility. However, both of them are contradictory each other. The advanced resin-based composites has excellent mechanical properties and strong designability, and is one of the main technical means to solve the above problems, but it also encounters a bottleneck. In view of these situations, this paper summarizes the development of advanced composites in recent years, and discusses in detail the protection mechanism of advanced composite materials, material selection and manufacturing processes, and the latest developments and future application trends of advanced composite materials for armor protection systems.
