Abstract:Resin matrix composite materials have characteristics such as high strength ratio and modulus ratio,good anti-fatigue properties and technology performance,able to design and so on.In the industrial it has always been attached importance.Various composite materials products have been applied to all walks of life,especially the aerospace field.The process from raw material to create products of composite materials need all to cure and form.The ways of curing and forming have been dozens.We introduce major matrix solidification methods and forming processes of composite materials domestic and foreign,and related researches.Solidification methods mainly include heat-curing,radiation-curing and microwave-curing.Forming processes mainly include die pressing forming,penetration forming,winding forming,draw and wring forming.The prospect of processes research and application are described.

Abstract:The research and application progress situations of liquid composite molding technology on aeronautics were summarized. The aerospace applications of the resin composite were summarized,the meaning of the liquid composite molding, the advantages and disadvantages of several typical liquid composite molding and their applications in the field of aviation were reviewed. The latest research progress of the liquid composite molding were summarized,some technical problems in the current stage of liquid composite molding were analyzed,and the aviation applications of auxiliary liquid composite molding such as automated placement technology and utilization of liquid composite molding on load-bearing structure were generalized. Focus on the gap between domestic and foreign liquid composite molding,it was discussed for that the urgent problems waiting to be solved of liquid composite molding,and the future development prospects were prospected of liquid composite molding. It is believed that the liquid composite molding will gradually realize the integration,automation,digitalization and intelligent development.

Abstract:For the successful operation of civil aircraft, the main drivers currently are environmentally based. This implies that significant weight reductions are essential, and hence, a fundamental re-think of the materials and their manufacturing processes used has taken place over a number of years. For realizing the benefits offered by advanced composite materials, manufacturing processes must be able to produce economically large components with as few joints as possible. Also, in order to increase the robustness of primary structures in-service, there is a move toward cocuring monolithic components and elimination of cellular sandwich panels and multistage cures; this presents challenges regarding the complexity of tooling and control of the process. This chapter presents the key manufacturing processes used for composite aerospace applications, control of these processes, and some basic theory. Current applications of these processes on modern composite airframes are provided.

Abstract:Thermosetting composites in aircraft structures are typically based on high-performance reinforcing materials, such as carbon fibre, held together by polymer resins, such as epoxies, which undergo an irreversible curing reaction to form the desired structural components. Compared to conventional metallic materials used in aerostructures, thermosetting composites offer superior specific strength and stiffness, along with improved corrosion and fatigue resistance. This can lead to significant gains in performance and fuel efficiency, along with reduced maintenance requirements. Consequently, these materials continue to gain favour in aircraft construction. The drive towards lower production costs, partly facilitated through the development of larger integrated structural components at higher production rates, is leading to new innovations in manufacturing. Advances in liquid resin infusion methodologies are helping to produce such large structural components more economically, while the development of automated fibre placement technologies is enhancing production quality and minimising conventional labour costs. However, a lack of maturity and experience in the analysis, design, manufacture, and maintenance of composite aerostructures continue to necessitate the need for greater research. For example, improvements in non-destructive inspection and adhesively bonded repairs are required to make composite maintenance more efficient and reliable. Further weight savings and performance benefits could also be achieved by integrating essential systems within composite structures, imbuing them with ‘multifunctionality’. Composite waste is another significant issue, given the projected increase in demand for these materials. In particular, thermoset composite recycling is expected to be a key technology requirement.

Abstract:In recent years, a lot of progress has been created on aerospace materials for structural and engineering applications. Composites are made when two or more different materials are combined to create superior and distinctive materials. For aerospace engineering, there is considerable progress in material science and engineering with the technological challenges in terms of subtle and specialized materials like composite materials. These days composites materials have gotten necessary in aerospace engineering because of their high specific strength at lower weight, stiffness, and corrosion resistance. Apart from it, nanotube benefits also have an essential role in advancement in the aerospace applications. Carbon nanotubes (CNT) applications have progressively enlarged because of its excellent options exhibited by these materials. The potential applications of CNTs are enlarged by an oversized variety of various applications in scientific fields, like storing energy, biological applications, and emission. Besides that, various fillers were utilized to increase the thermal conductivity of the chemical compound composite matrix. In order to take full advantage of these nanofiller, it is critical to control the distribution of nanofillers within the polymer matrix, as this structural organization affects how the two constituent components interact with one another. Thus, this chapter investigates the advancement of composite in aerospace applications in terms of opportunities, challenges, and future perspective.

Abstract:The aerospace systems of the twenty-first century will have mission requirements considerable beyond present day vehicles; including operation in a cost-effective manner. This in turn will require materials with enhanced mechanical property characteristics compared to current state-of-the-art materials. The mission scenarios of the future air and space systems will be briefly reviewed followed by a general consideration of the materials of construction. Two specific types of advanced materials will then be discussed - intermetallic compounds and metal matrix composites. It will be pointed out that while both generic types of materials offer increased strength, stiffness and temperature capability, both also suffer from low ambient temperature “forgiveness” (ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue crack growth rate, etc.) and high cost. The advances which have been made in resolving these concerns, while maintaining other characteristics at attractive levels, will be discussed. A detailed presentation of monolithic and composite titanium aluminides (Ti Al, where x = 1 or 3) will be made.

Abstract:Until recently metals were mostly used in the construction of aerospace structures, however, advances in materials science, especially in composites science and technology, allowed the development of promising new materials for aerospace engineering. Composites are hybrid materials developed by combining two or more components, in order to utilize the advantageous features of each component. Recently, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, developed by reinforcing different types of matrices with fibrous materials have garnered tremendous attention in aerospace engineering. Aerospace materials carry the loads exerted on the airframe of the aircraft during its flight operation from take-off, through cruising, to the final landing stage. Aerospace materials are also used in primary and secondary structural parts, including rocket motor castings, antenna dishes, engine nacelles, horizontal and vertical stabilizers, center wing boxes, aircraft wings, pressure bulkheads, landing gear doors, engine cowls, floor beams, tall cones, flap track panels, vertical and horizontal stabilizers, and so on. Some of these components are considered safety-critical. Aerospace materials also encompass jet engine structural materials such as turbine blades and other important components.

Abstract:The composite materials utilized in the aerospace sector are discussed in this chapter. Fabrication of aviation materials begins with the use of natural composite materials, such as wood. The aerospace industries are then dominated by steel, which is followed by the plastic era. There has been significant development made on composite materials for aircraft due to concerns about lightweight aircraft structures, fuel efficiency, and high-strength aircraft structures and certain demands on high-temperature requirements. In the aircraft structure, composites such as polymer matrix composite (PMC), metal matrix composite (MMC), and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) were used. Composite materials were used to construct nearly half of the aircraft’s construction. Composite materials have evolved with improved reinforcing fillers that can improve composite qualities, thanks to cutting-edge technologies. Materials used in the composite include nanofiller, natural fibers, and self-healing materials. There was a thorough discussion of the various types of composites. Finally, in this chapter, the future of aerospace composite materials was examined.

Abstract:Recent advances in aircraft materials and their manufacturing technologies have enabled progressive growth in innovative materials such as composites. Al-based, Mg-based, Ti-based alloys, ceramic-based, and polymer-based composites have been developed for the aerospace industry with outstanding properties. However, these materials still have some limitations such as insufficient mechanical properties, stress corrosion cracking, fretting wear, and corrosion. Subsequently, extensive studies have been conducted to develop aerospace materials that possess superior mechanical performance and are corrosion-resistant. Such materials can improve the performance as well as the life cycle cost. This review introduces the recent advancements in the development of composites for aircraft applications. Then it focuses on the studies conducted on composite materials developed for aircraft structures, followed by various fabrication techniques and then their applications in the aircraft industry. Finally, it summarizes the efforts made by the researchers so far and the challenges faced by them, followed by the future trends in aircraft materials.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. The disposal of Fiber Reinforced Composites (FRCs) waste is becoming a very critical aspect, from both a technical and an economic point of view, due to the continuous increase of the production of such a class of materials. Thus, the possibility to produce new composites by employing recycled materials is a crucial aspect both to guarantee the circularity of the manufacturing processes and the reduction of costs. In this work, the manufacturing process, together with the performance of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate obtained by employing into sandwich structures a novel commercial recycled non-woven carbon fabric with an epoxy resin, have been investigated. The fabrication process based on the Resin Infusion under Flexible Tooling (RIFT) has been selected and performed in different conditions. The mechanical behavior of the resulting laminates has been investigated by quasi-static tensile, and flexural characterization, to evaluate both the optimal conditions for the process, and the possible anisotropy of the product. Moreover, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was applied to complete the post-processing characterization of the resulting laminate by determining the actual carbon fibers (CFs) content, thus, to validate the reproducibility of the manufacturing process. The laminates obtained by the RIFT method exhibited good mechanical properties and isotropy if cross-ply stratification is adopted. The use of recycled CFs allows high sustainability and reduced cost for the composites, making the RIFT method investigated a scalable process and the so-manufactured products a valid candidate for numerous applications.

Abstract:Space is a stupendous and elephantine field that needs immense exploration and the advancements in the field of spacecraft materials are the top-notch field of today's research. The objective of the article is to examine the compositions of advance and composite materials used in the designing of space shuttle. The present work will discuss the applications and mechanical properties of reinforced materials used in the aerospace industry. Moreover, the paper is focused to highlight the usage and endurance limits of aluminum alloys in the air frame structure. An attempt has been made to provide the distribution of metallic materials in the structure of space shuttle through graphical representation. The thermodynamic characteristics of composite materials and possible advancements in the composite materials are discussed. The merits and demerits of composites such as advance carbon, reinforced carbon, flexible insulation blanket etc. in air shuttle fabrication are discussed to provide further directions for researchers. The developmental stages and growth of space materials are provided to select the suitable compositions of space shuttle materials.

Abstract:Abstract Metal additive manufacturing (AM) encapsulates the myriad of manufacturing processes available to meet industrial needs. Determining which of these AM processes is best for a specific aerospace application can be overwhelming. Based on the application, each of these AM processes has advantages and challenges. The most common metal AM methods in use include Powder Bed Fusion, Directed Energy Deposition, and various solid-state processes. Within each of these processes, there are different energy sources and feedstock requirements. Component requirements heavily affect the process determination, despite existing literature on these AM processes (often inclusive of input parameters and material properties). This article provides an overview of the considerations taken for metal AM process selection for aerospace components based on various attributes. These attributes include geometric considerations, metallurgical characteristics and properties, cost basis, post-processing, and industrialization supply chain maturity. To provide information for trade studies and selection, data on these attributes were compiled through literature reviews, internal NASA studies, as well as academic and industry partner studies and data. These studies include multiple AM components and sample build experiments to evaluate (1) material and geometric variations and constraints within the processes, (2) alloy characterization and mechanical testing, (3) pathfinder component development and hot-fire evaluations, and (4) qualification approaches. This article summarizes these results and is meant to introduce various considerations when designing a metal AM component.

Abstract:Continual development and establishment of innovative materials in aerospace applications intends at reduction in weight, improved fuel efficiency, superior performance, and decreased cost. Progress of engineering materials for aerospace application affects both financial and ecological issues. Latest developments in advanced composites impact aerospace applications, due to superior strength-to-weight ratio, wear resistance, and thermal resistance compared to conventional materials. Composite materials, due to their unique features, lighter weight, high fatigue strength, and anticorrosion resistance, have begun to be used more prominently for almost a decade to produce wings and fuselages in major commercial aircraft. In the last 20 years, advanced hybrid composites have turned out to be established as exceptionally efficient, elevated performance structural materials, and their consumption is increasing rapidly. This review chapter on recent advancements in advanced composites for aerospace applications presents a brief review of the present status of hybrid composite materials technology, in terms of characteristics and classification of aerospace composites, selection criteria, manufacturing process, and application of advanced composites in the aircraft and aerospace industries.
