What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily focuses on the mechanical performance research of advanced composite materials and their structures. Edited by Professor Yin Fan, this special issue compiles a series of research findings on different types of advanced composite materials, including Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP), Metal Matrix Composites (MMC), nano-enhanced materials, auxetic lattices, and other types of composites. Specifically, this special issue aims to explore the following points: 1. **Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP)**: - A new finite element model was proposed to evaluate the performance of foam-filled composite tubes during collisions. - The performance of CFRP joints under different testing methods was discussed. - The compressive strength of bio-inspired spiral laminates was studied. - The design of bio-inspired spiral composite laminates was optimized, and their nonlinear bending was analyzed. - An auxetic composite laminate with a negative Poisson's ratio in the thickness direction was proposed to mitigate low-velocity impact damage. - Different cross-sections of CFRP medical desktops were designed and tested. - The effect of processing parameters on the in-situ bonding between continuous fiber-reinforced PEEK laminates and short fiber-reinforced PEEK 3D prints was investigated. 2. **Metal Matrix Composites (MMC)**: - A novel alumina-based composite reinforced with MAX phase (titanium aluminum carbide Ti₃AlC₂) was proposed, showing higher fracture toughness. - The effect of different volume fractions of Al₂O₃ on the microstructure and mechanical wear properties of CrFeCuMnNi high-entropy alloy-based composites was studied. 3. **Nano-enhanced Materials**: - The inherent negative Poisson's ratio property of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) was discovered and verified through molecular dynamics simulations. 4. **Auxetic Lattices**: - The performance of additively manufactured auxetic lattices in terms of repeated impact and penetration resistance was tested. 5. **Other Composite Materials**: - A fiber-reinforced 3D printing method suitable for clay was developed and verified for its ability to increase the tensile strength of unfired clay in both dry and wet states. - The elastic properties of Mg₃Bi₂₋ₓSbₓ were studied through density functional theory calculations. In summary, the goal of this special issue is to collect and showcase the latest research findings on advanced composite materials and their mechanical properties, covering different research fields from the nano-scale to the macro-scale. It aims to provide new insights and technological advancements for material science and engineering in application areas such as aerospace, civil engineering, sensors, and medical devices.
