Abstract:This paper presents a progressive damage model, which is sufficiently general to predict the ultimate load-bearing ability and complex failure behaviors of the aluminum–carbon fiber/epoxy composite vessel structure. The model is implemented in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS based on the integration of material property degradation method (MPDM) and cohesive element (CE) method. The MPDM is implemented by ABAQUS user subroutine UMAT to model the intralaminar failure of composite laminates, while CEs are employed to simulate the delamination initiation and evolution at the interfaces. The progression of damage is controlled by a linear damage evolution law, which is based on the fracture energy dissipating during the process. In addition, the predictions of the model are also compared with experiments and reasonably good agreements are obtained.
Review of Damage Tolerant Analysis of Laminated Composites

Abstract:With advanced composites increasing replacing traditional metallic materials, the material inhomogeneity and inherent anisotropy of such materials lead to not only new attributes for aerospace structures, but also introduce new technology to damage tolerant design and analysis. The deleterious effects of changes in material properties and initiation and growth of structural damage must be addressed. The anisotropic and brittle properties make this requirement a challenging to composite structural designers. Accurate, reliable and user-friendly computational methods, design and analysis methods are vital for more damage tolerant composite structures. Both durability and damage tolerant methodologies must address the possible changes in mechanical properties and the evolving damage accumulations that may occur during the vehicle’s service lifetime. Delamination is a major failure mode in laminated composites and has received much research attention. It may arise out of manufacturing defects, free edge effects, structural discontinuities, low and high velocity impact damage, and even bird strikes. Early pioneering work established that the reduction in strength following delamination damages placed severe limits on the design allowable for highly loaded components such as aircraft wing and fuselage structure. In the present article, we provide a state-of-art survey on damage tolerant design correlated failure behavior and analysis methodologies of laminated composites. Particular emphasis is placed on some advanced formulations and numerical approaches for efficient computational modeling and damage tolerant analysis of laminated composites. © 2010 IAU, Arak Branch. Abstract:Sandwich composites have been a growing subject of interest to various industries, thus it has become essential to monitor these structures. There is a need to implement damage identification and characterization strategies. This work aims to study the reliability of the implementation of strain gauge sensors, the mechanical properties of an asymmetric sandwich composite made by a core of cork agglomerate, two fibre-reinforced epoxy skins and a natural stone on top. Initially, destructive bending tests were conducted to establish the maximum load for the specimens. This served as a crucial reference point for subsequently employing strain gauges to investigate the mechanical properties of the composite. Finally, the destructive bending tests were performed using strain gauges in order to assess the performance of strain gauges to detect damage within the composite. The study provides comprehensive insights into various mechanical properties, including bending strength, tensile, compressive, and flexural moduli, as well as the determination of the neutral line location within the material. Notably, the results from the destructive bending tests employing strain gauges demonstrated their effectiveness in detecting catastrophic events within the composite. This research contributes to the advancement of reliable structural integrity monitoring and characterization techniques for sandwich composites.

Abstract:Composite materials are those formed by combining two or more different materials to take advantage of the best characteristics of each one. However, due to this heterogeneity, composite materials suffer from non-linear failure modes. Because of this complexity, damage to composite structures cannot be identified by visual inspection or conventional techniques. Therefore, several complex techniques are employed in this type of material, with Machine Learning being the main way of dealing with the excessive data extracted from these techniques. Given the rapidly increasing use of composite materials in real-world applications, the demand for damage assessment (detection, quantification, and localization) methods is increasingly high. This article reviews the main and most recent works on ML methods for the damage assessment of composite structures. The selected studies are then covered in detail to provide researchers with an in-depth comprehension of what is new in ML algorithms for the damage assessment of composite structures. From 2019 to now, there has been a large increase in the number of publications related to damage assessments of composite materials, with a strong predominance of Artificial Neural Networks, Convolutional Neural Networks, and Principal Component Analysis techniques. However, there is still a lack of studies with real cases in real environments. Finally, future research directions and a summary of all selected works are suggested, presenting possible improvements of the state of the art.

Abstract:Damage characterization of laminated composites has been thoroughly studied the last decades where researchers developed several damage models, and in combination with experimental evidence, contributed to better understanding of the structural behavior of these structures. Experimental techniques played an essential role on this progress and among the techniques that were utilized, acoustic emission (AE) was extensively used due to its advantages for in-situ damage monitoring with high sensitivity and its capability to inspect continuously a relatively large area. This paper presents a comprehensive review on the use of AE for damage characterization in laminated composites. The review is divided into two sections; the first section discusses the literature for damage diagnostics and it is presented in three subsections: damage initiation detection, damage type identification and damage localization, while the second section is devoted to damage prognostics and it focuses on the remaining useful life (RUL) and residual strength prediction of composite structures using AE data. In every section, efforts have been made to analyze the most relevant literature, discuss in a critical manner the results and conclusions, and identify possibilities for future work.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. This study introduces a novel approach to obtaining and predicting damage evolution laws using quasi-static cyclic testing within the framework of continuum damage mechanics. To achieve this, a comprehensive set of characterization and parameter identification tests was performed. Carbon-epoxy specimens were manufactured using the filament-winding technique, and these laminates were tested using a universal testing machine. Digital image correlation was employed in all experiments to capture strain fields, and an alternative method utilizing the combined loading compression device is presented to obtain mechanical properties. Once the material was characterized, cyclic tests were conducted, including [math], [math], and [math] tensile tests, and shear v-notch tests. These aim to determine damage evolution laws for both conditions, pure and coupled stress states. From these tests, values for damage onset and threshold were obtained and used to define four new parameters. These parameters permit the estimation of degradation relationships for any arbitrary orientation without requiring additional tests. This approach was tested as the proof-of-concept within the positive range of transverse tension and in-plane shear stress domain. The obtained results are promising, justifying its extension to other failure mechanisms. While acknowledging its limitations, this new approach holds potential for implementation in the analysis of progressive failure in fiber-reinforced composite materials, possibly in conjunction with established failure criteria and computational tools, mainly in the finite element method domain.

Abstract:Composite structures can be considerably weakened by the introduction of geometrical singularities such as holes or notches, and the strength analysis of these composite parts is thus a major aspect in the design of aeronautical structures. This article proposes to evaluate the maturity of different strength analysis methods dedicated to the prediction of the final failure of open-hole plates. To evaluate the predictive capabilities of the studied failure approaches, tensile tests have been performed on multi-perforated laminated plates with different configurations of perforation, stacking sequences, and two different carbon/epoxy materials. Three different fast computational methods, used in post-treatment of finite-element simulations, are studied: the classical point stress method, the fracture characteristic volume method, and the critical damage area method. Their predictions are compared with the available test results on multi-perforated plates. The limitations of the point stress method are highlighted and the advantages of the two other alternative strength methods are discussed.

Abstract:Steel–concrete composite systems are an efficient alternative to mid- and high-rise building structures because of their high strength-to-weight ratio when compared to traditional concrete or steel constructive systems. Nevertheless, composite structural systems are susceptible to damage due to, for example, deficient construction processes, errors in design and detailing, steel corrosion, and the drying shrinkage of concrete. As a consequence, the overall strength of the structure may be significantly decreased. In view of the relevance of this subject, the present paper addresses the damage detection problem in a steel–concrete composite structure with an impact-hammer-based modal testing procedure. The mathematical formulation adopted in this work allows for the identification of regions where stiffness varies with respect to an initial virgin state without the need for theoretical models of the undamaged structure (such as finite element models). Since mode shape curvatures change due to the loss of stiffness at the presence of cracks, a change in curvature was adopted as a criterion to quantify stiffness reduction. A stiffness variability index based on two-dimensional mode shape curvatures is generated for several points on the structure, resulting in a damage distribution pattern. Our numerical predictions were compared with experimentally measured data in a full-scale steel–concrete composite beam subjected to bending and were successfully validated. The present damage detection strategy provides further insight into the failure mechanisms of steel–concrete composite structures, and promotes the future development of safer and more reliable infrastructures.

Abstract:Journal of Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. The complexity of the damage behavior of composite materials due to the simultaneous evolution of different mechanisms involving matrixes, reinforcements and interfaces is a topic which, despite decades of knowledge, still requires specific insights and is the subject of a multitude of researches. Recently, with the attention increasingly directed towards biobased raw materials, these aspects have shown a renewed interest, prompting the need for further contributions. In this context, this experimental research work aims to investigate the damage behavior of laminate structures based on a commercial polyamide obtained from castor oil, reinforced with woven basalt fibers. The focus was on samples obtained by hot compaction using two different pressure profiles and subjected to low velocity impacts with different impact energies. Damage analysis was performed on impacted specimens using ultrasonic phased array inspections and pulsed thermography. The non-destructive analysis supported low velocity impact test results, confirming the different contribution of the damage mechanisms involved, as expected from the different level of compaction of the materials, in turn due to diverse manufacturing conditions. This research has emphasized the complementarity and effectiveness of these two non-destructive characterization techniques, providing potentially useable results for the optimal design and manufacturing of biocomposite systems.

Abstract:This study focuses on the numerical analysis and experimental evaluation of failures and damages in the bolted joints of CFRP composite laminates under tensile loads. Firstly, failure criteria for fiber and matrix are established based on the Puck/LaRC failure criteria and in-situ strength theory. A mechanical model for composite damage analysis is established by adopting the nonlinear stiffness degradation method. Secondly, the tensile properties of composite laminates and perforated plates are analyzed using a mechanical model developed above. Finally, we conducted an experimental investigation of the composite joints and finite element analysis of their failure and damage evolution. The comparison between the calculated and experimental results demonstrated that the employed mechanical model and calculation method could accurately predict the strength and damage of carbon fiber composite joints under tensile loads. Moreover, to evaluate the fracture angle in matrix failures, we proposed a new method, which is found to be beneficial in improving the accuracy and efficiency of evaluating fracture angles.

Abstract:Woven composites have better integrity and anti-delamination properties than laminates, due to the interlaced yarns in the woven structures. However, these structural characteristics lead to a more complex failure mechanism, which brings great challenges to the damage evolution studies of woven composites. In this paper, the research status of damage evolution of woven composites is summarized and reviewed from the aspects of experimental techniques, damage evolution model and simulation. In terms of experimental techniques, the methods to characterize the damage evolution of woven composites are summarized emphatically, including the damage characterization based on strain, acoustic emission, infrared characteristics and computed tomography (CT). The application conditions, problems and challenges of these methods are reviewed briefly. In terms of damage evolution models and numerical simulations, the typical research methods for woven composites under quasi-static load, fatigue and impact load are summarized considering the loading characteristics. On the basis of the above summaries, the future research trends of damage evolution of woven composites are put forward, including the multi-means integrated characterization of damage mechanisms, damage related tests of macro and meso basic mechanical properties, macro and meso strength criterion and strength design, simulation models combining machine learning algorithm and finite element method or more, service performance studies based on digital twin and whole life cycle under complex circumstances, etc.
Strategies For Improving The Damage Tolerance Of Future Composite Materials

Abstract:Improving the damage tolerance of a composite is identified as a key goal for future development. A change in emphasis is suggested with a move away from the philosophy of improving performance by increasing the resistance of the laminate to damage formation, which should be accompanied by attempts to control the nature of damage such that energy can be absorbed through cracking in a way that is not deleterious to the final properties of the structure.Different strategies are proposed to achieve this, consisting of specific attempts to maximise the resistance of the laminate to damage growth by improving interlaminar toughness, G(I) (prop) or by introducing new architecture into the composite such that the nature of damage is modified. Examples are provided of the use of interlaminar veils, 3D textile fauns and the use of specific fiber hybridisation to facilitate the improved resistance to crack propagation.

Abstract:Composite materials/structures are advancing in product efficiency, cost-effectiveness and the development of superior specific properties. There are increasing demands in their applications to load-carrying structures in aerospace, wind turbines, transportation, medical equipment and so on. Thus, robust and reliable non-destructive testing of composites is essential to reduce safety concerns and maintenance costs. There have been various non-destructive testing methods built upon different principles for quality assurance during the whole lifecycle of a composite product. This article reviews the most established non-destructive testing techniques for detection and evaluation of defects/damage evolution in composites. These include acoustic emission, ultrasonic testing, infrared thermography, terahertz testing, shearography, digital image correlation, as well as X-ray and neutron imaging. For each non-destructive testing technique, we cover a brief historical background, principles, standard practices, equipment and facilities used for composite research. We also compare and discuss their benefits and limitations and further summarise their capabilities and applications to composite structures. Each non-destructive testing technique has its own potential and rarely achieves a full-scale diagnosis of structural integrity. Future development of non-destructive testing techniques for composites will be directed towards intelligent and automated inspection systems with high accuracy and efficient data processing capabilities.

Abstract:Detection of damage due to impact in an isotropic structure like metal, its alloys, etc. is an easy task but in the case of fibre reinforced polymer matrix composite structures, it becomes one of the critical factors which cannot be tolerated to use this structure extensively. Metals are usually ductile in nature as they can absorb more energy but in case of composite it is different; impact in composite reduces the structural strength. Most of the composite are brittle in nature. Composite can absorb energy in elastic deformation but not via plastic deformation. So it becomes important to consider the impact loading and influence of parameters to improve the damage resistance of composite structures in many applications like automobiles, aerospace, defense, etc. This paper presents the pivotal reviews of the previously published literature regarding the influence of parameters, damage mechanisms, enhancement of damage resistance of various composites. Firstly this paper briefly reviews the approach of analysis and the influence of stacking sequence on failure of the composite. Following this, the compendium review of other parameters for improvement of low velocity impact resistance specifically different constituents materials, geometrical factors, self-healing, bio-composites, off-centre loading and angle impact that influences the structural behaviour of different composites under the impact loading is briefly discussed. This review further discusses the different factors to be considered to enhance the impact damage resistance of fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites and concludes with future work discussion.

Abstract:The characteristics of carbon fibre reinforced laminates have widened their use from aerospace to domestic appliances, and new possibilities for their usage emerge almost daily. In many of the possible applications, the laminates need to be drilled for assembly purposes. It is known that a drilling process that reduces the drill thrust force can decrease the risk of delamination. In this work, damage assessment methods based on data extracted from radiographic images are compared and correlated with mechanical test results-bearing test and delamination onset test-and analytical models. The results demonstrate the importance of an adequate selection of drilling tools and machining parameters to extend the life cycle of these laminates as a consequence of enhanced reliability.

Abstract:Laminated composites have been increasingly used in structural components. However, transverse impact to a composite laminate can cause initial damage such as notches and delamination, jeopardizing the integrity and safety of composite laminated structures. With this concern, this study proposes a novel damage characterization approach for the identification of initial damage in composite laminates, even in the absence of material and structural information. In particular, starting from the vibration equation of composite laminates, a novel concept of damage-caused force is formulated to characterize damage, and strategies of isotropization and normalization are further integrated to deal with the absence of material and structural information. Thereby, a baseline-free damage index is established using the damage-caused force, by which the presence, location, and size of initial damage in cross-ply composite laminates can be characterized without knowledge of material and structural parameters. The capability of the approach is numerically verified on carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with a notch and a delamination, respectively. The applicability of the approach is experimentally validated by identifying a notch and a delamination in CFRP laminates, respectively. The CFRP laminates are excited by lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) actuators and scanned by a scanning laser vibrometer (SLV) to acquire high-resolution mode shapes. Numerical and experimental results show that the proposed approach features high robustness to environmental noise and is capable of identifying initial damage in cross-ply composite laminates without prior material and structural information.

Abstract:Damage evolution in composite sandwich panels under quasi–static impact is investigated by using a progressive failure analysis methodology. Several failure criteria, e.g. Hashin's and Besant's criteria, are used for different failure mechanisms such as fiber breakage, matrix or core cracking, and interfacial delamination in the impacted face sheet. Material degradation is achieved through a set of degradation factors for different failure modes. Three dimensional honeycomb sandwich panels are analyzed by using commercial finite element code, ABAQUS, incorporating different failure criteria user–defined material model. Comparisons of the numerical results and experimental data for maximum contact force and delamination area are presented. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:High-fidelity strength prediction of composites requires advanced numerical methods that can explicitly resolve the multiple damage processes and their nonlinear coupling at various scales. Nonlinear fracture models such as cohesive zone models are critical for damage descriptions and need to be properly embedded in a numerical framework so that correct coupling between different damage process zones can be guaranteed. This paper reviews the recent developments in advanced numerical methods that have the potential to address the important issue of progressive damage evolution in composites. Candidate FE-based numerical methods, including X-FEM, A-FEM, and phantom node methods, are reviewed and their capabilities in handling the multiple damage coupling in composites are assessed. Successful simulations of composites at various scales using the framework of A-FEM are presented and the numerical and material issues associated with these high-fidelity analyses are highlighted. Finally, we address the question of how to integrate all these different scale analyses into a single multiscale numerical framework by using the Arlequin coupling method.

Abstract:This review paper presents an overview of computational methods for modelling the failure of composite materials, with a focus on fracture modelling. The paper begins by discussing the principles and concepts of continuum damage mechanics (CDM), phase field method (PFM), cohesive zone model (CZM) and discrete element method (DEM), highlighting their ability to predict crack initiation, propagation, and coalescence. The paper also includes case studies and examples that demonstrate the effectiveness and limitations of each method in simulating fracture behaviour in different composite materials. We then review existing methods for modelling the deformation and fracture behaviour of composite material under dynamic loading. Additionally, the significance of multiscale modelling, multi-physics modelling and data-driven methods in composite failure analysis is discussed. Multiscale models provide a comprehensive understanding of deformation and fracture across various length scales, while multi-physics modelling can provide valuable insights into failure mechanisms when multiple physical phenomena are coupled, such as hygrothermal degradation of composite materials. On the other hand, data-driven methods enhance fracture and multiscale modelling through machine learning and statistical techniques. Current challenges and recommendations for future work have also been articulated.
