Abstract:In this review, the research conducted by the authors on anodic oxide films on aluminum is described, paying particular attention to how the electric field strength, as a factor other than voltage, controls the nanostructures and properties of the films. It will also be indicated what factors contribute to the formation of defects, which, in contrast to the ideal or model film structure, contains a significant number of defects in the film. In addition to electrochemical measurements, the films were examined with a variety of advanced instruments, including electron microscopes, to confirm the “reality of film nanostructure” from a slightly different angle than the conventional view. The following topics on anodic films formed in four types of major anodizing electrolytes are discussed: pore initiation process, steady-state porous structure, sealing mechanism, the relationship between cell parameters and voltage/electric field strength, amount and depth of anion incorporation, electrolyte types, radial branching of pores, atypical pore structures, defect formation mechanism, self-ordering, Al coordination number, and the creation of α-alumina membranes.

Changes in the Structure and Corrosion Protection Ability of Porous Anodic Oxide Films on Pure Al and Al Alloys by Pore Sealing Treatment

Abstract:It is well known that corrosion protection of pure Al is enormously improved by the formation of porous anodic oxide films and by pore sealing treatment. However, the effects of anodizing and pore sealing on corrosion protection for Al alloys are unclear, because the alloying elements included in Al alloys affect the structure of anodic oxide films. In the present study, porous anodic oxide films are formed on pure Al, 1050-, 3003- and 5052-Al alloys, and pore sealing was carried out in boiling water. Changes in the structure and corrosion protection ability of porous anodic oxide films on pure Al and the Al alloys by pore sealing, were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). SEM observation showed that anodic oxide films formed on pure Al have a smooth surface after pore sealing, and that cracks are formed in anodic oxide films on 1050-, 3003- and 5052-aluminum alloys, after pore sealing. Corrosion protection after pore sealing increased with anodizing time on pure Al, but only slightly increased with anodizing time on the Al alloys.

Peculiar Porous Aluminum Oxide Films Produced via Electrochemical Anodizing in Malonic Acid Solution with Arsenazo-I Additive

Abstract:The influence of arsenazo-I additive on electrochemical anodizing of pure aluminum foil in malonic acid was studied. Aluminum dissolution increased with increasing arsenazo-I concentration. The addition of arsenazo-I also led to an increase in the volume expansion factor up to 2.3 due to the incorporation of organic compounds and an increased number of hydroxyl groups in the porous aluminum oxide film. At a current density of 15 mA·cm-2 and an arsenazo-I concentration 3.5 g·L-1, the carbon content in the anodic alumina of 49 at. % was achieved. An increase in the current density and concentration of arsenazo-I caused the formation of an arsenic-containing compound with the formula Na1,5Al2(OH)4,5(AsO4)3·7H2O in the porous aluminum oxide film phase. These film modifications cause a higher number of defects and, thus, increase the ionic conductivity, leading to a reduced electric field in galvanostatic anodizing tests. A self-adjusting growth mechanism, which leads to a higher degree of self-ordering in the arsenazo-free electrolyte, is not operative under the same conditions when arsenazo-I is added. Instead, a dielectric breakdown mechanism was observed, which caused the disordered porous aluminum oxide film structure.

Abstract:The effect of surface roughness of aluminum on pore arrangement of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) has been studied. Level crossing analysis was used in order to quantitatively evaluate the surface roughness (smoothness) of aluminum which was electropolished under a wide range of different voltages, temperatures and times, using ( t ormalsize H_3PO_4+H_2SO_4+H_2O(4:4:2, v/v)) electrolyte. We present an image processing method which quantitatively determines the pore arrangement of AAO nanostructures which were formed in 0.3 M oxalic acid via two-step self-organized anodization, at 1 °C at constant voltage of 40 V. Here, we have analysed AAO which naturally forms hexagonal structures. However, the image processing method we have proposed here can be used basically to analyse any periodic structure. We have shown that the pore arrangement of AAO is in direct correlation with surface roughness and the best arrangement in AAO can be achieved for the smoothest surface, i.e. lowest value of level crossing.

Abstract:Ordered porous metal oxide thin films (PMOTF) have attracted vivid attention due to their unique mesostructures and special magnetic, optical, and electrical properties. The electrochemical anodic oxidation preparation of PMOTF were demonstrated to be an efficient and well-controlled method in a single fabricating step. However, the formation mechanism of the porous structure is still controversial. In this paper, the causal relationship between crystalline structure of anode metals and morphologies of PMOTFs were proposed. Systemical investigation show that the anode metals with face-centered cubic (fcc) structure will form a highly ordered porous film with regular shape pores after anodic oxidation; the anodic oxidation of hexagonal densely packed (hcp) metals results in an ordered array of nanotubes; for body-centered cubic (bcc) structure metals after anodic oxidation, the above two kinds of film structures can be formed, but the order degree is worse. These results provide a new view-angle and theoretical framework for anodic oxidation preparation of PMOTF.
Defect Formation in SOFC Electrolyte Films during Fabrication

Abstract:A defect-free electrolyte film is an essential component for a solid oxide fuel cell. Fabrication often requires the electrolyte film to be sintered under the constraint of a non-sintering (effectively rigid) substrate and large defects can be formed as a result of this constrained sintering. A full understanding of the formation of such large defects is still lacking. In this work, particle packing uniformity in screen-printed electrolytes was investigated using photoluminescence spectroscopy mapping on the green film in which α-Al2O3 particles had been introduced by impregnation. This revealed the existence of low density domains of size 30-50 μm in the green film. The mechanical properties of the green films were investigated by nano-indentation, which showed the polymeric binder used in screen-printing can significantly increase the creep of green film. Defects were also generated by indentation and their evolution during sintering was examined and is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Self-organised nanoporous anodic films were fabricated on 904L superaustenitic stainless steel by the electrochemical treatment in ethylene glycol electrolyte containing perchloric acid. The effects of experimental conditions, such as electrolyte temperature and applied voltage on nanoporous morphology, were studied by the way of scanning electron microscopy. The results show that lower solution temperature promotes formation of orderly nanopores. Nanoporous anodic films cannot be formed, and pitting will appear on the stainless steel when temperature is above 40 degrees C. The sizes of pores gradually increase with increasing applied voltage when the applied voltage is lower than 30 V. Porous morphology will change from roughly circular to polygonal, and the size will change from uniform to uneven when the applied voltage is higher than 30 V. It is difficult to form orderly nanoporous anodic films when the applied voltage is too high. Difference of element content in stainless steel is also an important factor for the porous morphology. When the applied voltage is 50 V, orderly pores are formed on 316 austenitic stainless steel surface. However, under the same conditions, this phenomenon does not occur on 904L superaustenitic stainless steel surface. From the analysis of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the films are composed of various metal oxides.

Abstract:The preparation of ordered porous metal oxide films by anodic oxidation is an efficient and simple preparation method. However, there has been no unified explanation about the formation mechanism of the porous structure for many years. In this paper, the relationship between the crystal structure of metals and the morphology of ordered porous metal oxide films is proposed. The influence of the crystal structures of different metals on the optimal morphology of porous films is discussed. Systematic studies show that anodic metals with face-centered cubic structure form highly ordered porous metal oxide films after anodic oxidation; metals with hexagonal dense arrangement form ordered nanotube arrays after anodic oxidation, but those with body-centered cubic structure form poorly ordered porous films after anodic oxidation. These results provide a new perspective and theoretical framework for the preparation of ordered porous metal oxide films by anodic oxidation.

Abstract:Single and multilayer of Al2O3 and TiO2 were fabricated on anodized aluminum by atomic layer deposition. The effect of processing parameters on pore sealing and anti-corrosion property was studied. It is concluded that the micropores on anodized aluminum could be sealed by atomic layer deposition oxide films through SEM and staining experiments. The anti-corrosive property is affected mainly by the film thickness and process temperature. The acidic drip and salt spray test shows that the anti-corrosion property is enhanced as the film thickness increase. With the similar thickness, Al2O3/TiO2 multilayer film has the best anti-corrosion property, while the single Al2O3 layer appears the poorest. The complementary roles between two basic materials result in the enhanced application property.

Abstract:The nanoporous film has been widely studied because of its unique properties, of which the self-organizing porous array is significant for various potential applications. Herein, the self-organized porous film with the diameter of 43-104nm was fabricated on FeCrAl alloy by anodic oxidation in perchloric acid-based electrolyte. And the pore diameter linearly varied with the applied voltage from 40V to 70V. The evolution of porous films were investigated via HIM and AFM. The pore depth firstly increased, kept constant and then decreased. The ordered pore was formed within initial 3-5min. To elucidate the anodizing mechanism, the composition of anodic film and precipitate were analyzed by XPS and FTIR respectively. Possible formation mechanism of the anodic films on the FeCrAl substrate was proposed: the porous film was sourced from the coordination compound, which consisted of metal ions (Fe2+, Fe3+, Al3+ and Cr3+) and carboxyl organic compounds from ethylene glycol oxidization. In the anodic film, the atomic concentration followed the order of Al > Fe > Cr. The study provided for the guideline for enhancing the mechanical strength between metallic substrate and coating.

Abstract:In this study, advanced coating with self-healing property for corrosion protection of Al alloy was developed. This coating can be formed on Al alloy anodized, and pores in porous type of anodic oxide film formed on Al substrate was filled by a healing agent of coating. It is clear that the defect formed by mechanical damage was covered by self-healing structure, when this coating formed on Al surface was damaged. And corrosion protection also keep high if this coating was damaged.

Abstract:In reinforced concrete, the first step of steel corrosion is the structural deterioration of the passivation film that can prevent further corrosion. Due to the nanoscale properties of passivation film structure, understanding its deteriorated mechanism is still a challenge. Here, the nano-process of passivation film corrosion is revealed by employing reactive molecular dynamics. It is found that the layer structure of γ-FeOOH in passivation film has a strong resistance to corrosion in solution, which corresponds to its high corrosion prevention. The perfect structure of γ-FeOOH is hard to deteriorate. However, introducing the defects in the passivation film structure can facilitate corrosion deterioration. By introducing the [001] and [100] defects in the γ-FeOOH structure, the interaction between passivation film and solution is increased. But only the [100] defects can lead to structural deterioration. The difference between the [001] and [100] defects are originated from the competitive effects between the O atoms in γ-FeOOH and the O atoms in water on Fe atoms. The γ-FeOOH structure deteriorates when the O atoms in water are winning. Moreover, the nano products of γ-FeOOH deterioration are also observed. This work reveals the fundamental deteriorated process of passivation film and is also the first step to exploring the corrosion of steel bars in the engineering environment.

Abstract:In this article, the perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS) is used as a low surface energy substance to self-assemble in Al2O3 surface to prepare a corrosion-resistant composite film by anodization and self-assembly technology. The morphology, structure, wettability, and chemical composition of the composite film are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, water contact angle, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corrosion resistance of the composite film is tested through electrochemical test and the neutral salt spray test, and various pollution simulations are performed to test the self-cleaning performance of the film. The formation mechanism of the film is discussed by quantum chemical calculations. The results show that compared with Al alloy, the AC impedance of the composite film is increased by five orders of magnitude, the corrosion current density is reduced by three orders of magnitude, and the neutral salt spray corrosion test reaches 31 days. Meanwhile, theoretical studies of quantum chemical calculations show that Al2O3/POTS film is adsorbed on the surface of Al alloys through SiOAl chemical bonds. This work puts forward scientific viewpoints and novel design concepts to create effective anti-corrosion coatings to protect Al alloys, and then expand its potential applications in other fields.

Abstract:The impact of voltage on the formation of nanopores through electrochemical anodization of high-purity aluminum was examined. The electrochemical bath was carefully prepared with oxalic acid electrolyte, while a 99.5% pure aluminum electrode served as the cathode and an aluminum template as the anode. The anodization process was conducted at room temperature, with voltage increments ranging from 20V to 65V, which was made possible by the in-house electrochemical cell. Notably, each incremental increase in voltage yielded a significant surge in current density, accompanied by a marked expansion in nanopore size, growing from approximately 35 nm to 125 nm. X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were used to characterize the films. A slight phase change was observed in the aluminum substrate's FCC structure after the anodization process, transitioning to a monoclinic structure at 39° and 45° for all applied potentials. The stoichiometry of the films was determined through RBS analysis. The nano pores' resulting morphology and phase composition were further examined using SEM and EDS, providing insights into their structural characteristics. Furthermore, the water contact angle of the anodized aluminum oxide samples was measured, revealing a range of approximately 85.16 to 61.01 degrees.

Abstract:This paper presents the process of preparing a phosphoric-acid thin anodic oxide composite film on an 18 μm aluminum alloy foil. The parameters of anodizing were adjusted to obtain a thin anodic oxide film, and then the nano-pores of the film were sealed by electrodeposited silane doped with Y3+. A dense and uniform oxide-organic composite film (called TAO-Si@Y film) with a thickness of only about 275 nm was successfully prepared. The structure, morphology, composition and corrosion resistance of the composite film were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy spectroscopy (EDS), potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and neutral salt spray. The silanol groups of the silane reacted with the thin anodic oxide film to form Al-O-Si. The TAO-Si@Y film had a corrosion current density icorr of 9.18 × 10−9 A cm−2 and a low-frequency impedance modulus |Z|0.01 of 2.26 × 106 Ω cm2, which could provide long-term corrosion protection to the Al foil substrate. Furthermore, the influence of the Y3+ doping in silane solution on the composite film was also discussed.

Abstract:The lightweight, recyclable aluminum alloy with the "green metal" modifier enhances energy efficiency by substituting various metals; however, its thin natural oxide layer is susceptible to cracking or corrosion in harsh environments, requiring surface treatment, such as anodization. Anodization improves metal's corrosion and wear resistance, hardness, and esthetic impression. Its arrangement of the nanopore structure influences the uniformity of secondary processes, such as coloring, paint, and coating adhesion. This study applied time variables to the three-step process's first anodization and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) removal steps to confirm AAO pore uniformity. A six-hour anodization formed 8.26 ± 0.10 μm thick AAO. Subsequent removal steps, lasting 0.5, 2, 6, and 10 h, resulted in a 5.04 μm h −1 AAO removal rate. As the AAO removal time increased, pore diameter ( D p ) and interpore distance ( D int ) changed, and the 6 h AAO removal condition was used for anodization. The AAO's pore uniformity, surface roughness, and wettability were observed after the first anodization for 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 h; AAO removal; and second anodization. Furthermore, larger, uniform pores formed as the first anodization time increased, and pore structure changes increased AAO's roughness and decreased contact angle. This study introduces an efficient anodization manufacturing method that can be employed across various fields, aiming to enhance material stability and improve energy storage efficiency.

Abstract:Several chips of porous alumina films with different nanostructures and scales were prepared by using the method of anodic oxidation. An atomic force microscope (AFM) was employed to image the surfaces of alumina films, and the corresponding reflective spectra of them were acquired with a spectrometer. The experiments show that the alumina films with average pore diameters of 26 and 39 nm feature particular reflective spectra, each consisting of a periodic distribution of peaks and valleys within the wavelength range from 500 nm to 1000 nm. The density or the number of peaks and valleys was determined by the scales of nanostructures. The present paper discussed the relationship between the scale of nanostructures and the distribution of reflective spectra. Some satisfying explanations for them were presented.
Defects analysis in self-organized nanopore arrays formed by anodization of aluminium at various temperatures

Abstract:The self-organized anodization of aluminium in sulphuric acid was employed for formation of high-density nanostructures at various cell potentials and temperatures. The well-ordered arrangement of nanopores was obtained by two-step anodization process. The qualitative and quantitative analyses of defects were performed from SEM images of nanostructures. The Fourier transform (FFT) analyses showed that the uniformity of the triangular lattice increases gradually with increasing anodising potential independently of temperature. The order in the nanopore arrangement and size of well-ordered domains increase with increasing anodising potential for all studied temperatures. Quantitative analyses of defects, known as Delanuay triangulations, were performed for various anodising potentials and temperatures. The percentage of generated defects is constant at the cell potential between 15 and 23 V. At the temperature of 1 degree C, the percentage of defects equals to 20% while at temperatures of -8 or 10 degrees C reaches a value of about 30%. At the anodising potential of 25 V the percentage of generated defects in porous alumina is drastically reduced to about 10%, independently of the anodising temperature. The perfect nanopore arrangement on the anodised surface with the smallest number of defects can be obtained at 25 V.
