Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology to supply deionized water as liquid coolant for the thermal management in microelectronics. Graphene has been demonstrated as a promising candidate for CDI electrode. However, the performance of current graphene-based CDI is far below expectation due to the limited specific surface area (SSA) and electrical conductivity of the chemically reduced graphene. Here we presented a KOH-activated graphene that has ultrahigh SSA of 3513m2/g and electrical conductivity of 104S/m. With improved materials properties, an ultrahigh electrosorption capacity of 11.86mg/g and a significant adsorption rate of 20min are achieved.
Fabrication of Mesoporous Graphene Electrodes with Enhanced Capacitive Deionization

Abstract:Mesoporous graphene electrodes are facilely fabricated via a simple thermal treatment of graphene oxide as well as site-localized etching of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (E-Gr-Fe3O4). Influences of FeCl2 precursor on the amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and textural properties of E-Gr-Fe3O4 are investigated. The obtained graphene framework exhibits a porous structure with a specific surface area of 362 m(2)/g and excellent specific capacity of 128 F/g, which is twice higher than that of pristine reduced graphene oxide electrodes (RGO, 66 F/g). With the enhanced electrochemical capacity, low inner resistance and good stability, the as-prepared mesoporous E-Gr-Fe3O4 electrode exhibits a high electrosorptive capacity of 10.3 mg/g when the initial NaCl conductivity is 300 mu s/cm, which is much higher than that of RGO (6 mg/g). The results demonstrate that E-Gr-Fe3O4 is quite a promising candidate as high performance electrodes for capacitive deionization. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:AbstractIn order to achieve optimal desalination during capacitive deionization (CDI), CDI electrodes should possess high electrical conductivity, large surface area, good wettability to water, narrow pore size distribution and efficient pathways for ion and electron transportation. In this work, we fabricated a novel CDI electrode based on a three-dimensional graphene (3DG) architecture by constructing interconnected graphene sheets with in-plane nanopores (NP-3DG). As compared to 3DG, NP-3DG features a larger specific surface area of 445 m2 g−1 and therefore the higher specific capacitance. The ultrahigh electrosorptive capacity of NP-3DG predicted from Langmuir isotherm is 17.1 mg g−1 at a cell potential of 1.6 V. This can be attributed to the interconnected macropores within the graphene networks and nanopores on graphene sheets. Both of macropores and nanopores are favorable for enhancing CDI peroformance by buffering ions to reduce the diffusion distances from the external electrolyte to the interior surfaces and enlarging the surface area.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology offering a green and efficient route to obtain clean water. According to its basic working mechanism, the covalent bond attached three-dimensional graphene/carbon nanotubes hybrid (G-CNTs) can be considered a promising material for CDI performance. In this paper, we present a novel strategy to improve wettability through moderate oxidation treatment for G-CNTs-based CDI electrodes because the poor wettability of G-CNTs will limit electrosorption performance. The results showed that the activated G-CNTs-1 h exhibited good cycling stability performance and high electrosorption capacity of 8.45 mg g(-1) when the initial concentration of NaCl was 500 mg L-1, more than twice that of the pristine G-CNTs (3.95 mg g(-1)). This work may provide a new insight into the future pretreatment of graphene or carbon nanotube based CDI electrode materials.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology that supplies deionized water to resolve the fresh water shortage. CDI electrodes are mainly made up of carbon materials, of which the deionization performance is closely related to their physical properties and structures. Hence, a rational design of electrode material structure is essentially significant. Functionalized graphene (fG) in particular has recently been regarded as characteristic CDI electrode material. However, preparation of fG based on graphene oxide usually results in serious secondary pollution due to usage of highly poisonous chemicals, and thus still cannot meet the demand of practical application. It is feasible that environmentally-friendly activated carbon (AC) and small amounts of fGs can be combined rationally, and used as CDI electrodes. Here, sono-assembled AC/m-phenylenediamine (mPEA) or p-phenylenediaminefG inter-connected network architecture has been constructed for the first time successfully. The specific capacitances of the AC/fG composites were found to be significantly higher than that of the AC electrode owing to mesoporous generation. Also, among all the samples, the AC composite with 5 wt % mPEA-fG exhibited an ultrahigh electrosorption capacity of 12.58 mg/g (or 0.22 mmol/g) in NaCl solution. These observations indicate that fG can serve as an efficient conductive bridge to decrease the aggregation of AC particles, and improve the electron transfer with the composite electrode. This work provides an effective strategy for the environmental and economical electrode architectures for general applications in CDI and energy storage. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a technology with excellent potential for applications in the field of desalination and water treatment. Graphene is considered to be an ideal material in the field of CDI due to its large surface area and high electrical conductivity. However, the severe π-π restacking of graphene sheets leads to problems such as long ion transport distances and small interlayer distances, which result in low desalination capacity and poor cycling performance. Herein, we prepared partially reduced holey graphene oxide by H 2 O 2 treatment and subsequent ascorbic acid reduction of graphene oxide, which led to high specific capacitance and cyclic stability. The partially remaining oxygen-containing functional groups can act as spacers to effectively prevent π-π stacking phenomenon from occurring in graphene sheets, which provides sufficient storage space to facilitate the rapid transfer of ions. As electrode material for CDI, the electrode delivers a desalination capacity as high as 22.4 mg g −1 (applied potential: 1.4 V; initial NaCl concentration: 1500 ppm) and good cycling performance (desalination capacity retention of 81.5 % after 50 cycles). This rational combination of surface etching and partial reduction strategies can be used to fabricate high-performance CDI electrodes, which are expected to be applied to other energy storage and conversion systems.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) technology represents a potent approach towards energy-efficient and sustainable access to potable water, with minimal environmental impact. However, the ion removal capacity of CDI systems remains inadequate for desalination of saline water. Herein, mesopore-enhanced graphene foam with modified hydrophilicity via O 2 -plasma treatment (MGFP) is proposed for ultrahigh CDI. This developed MGFP encompasses abundant mesopores, outstanding electrical conductivity and good hydrophilicity, enabling fast ions migration, efficient solution/pores contact and high adsorption capacity. As such, MGEP delivers a high specific capacitance of 156.64 F g −1 at 1 mV s −1 , and a maximum salt adsorption capacity (SAC) up to 40.76 mg g −1 (1000 mg L −1 , 1.2 V), much higher than most of the CDI systems leveraging the carbon-based materials. What's more, MGFP can be employed in the treatment of wastewaters containing various heavy metals, with the SAC of 89.96, 83.38, and 91.80 mg g −1 , as for CuCl 2 , CoCl 2 , and NiCl 2 (1000 mg L −1 , 1.6 V), respectively. This well-developed MGFP undoubtedly presents a promising material platform within the CDI system, effectively tackling the pressing concern of water scarcity.

Abstract:Large-scale Li-ion doped graphene/carbon nanofiber porous architectures were prepared by electrospinning homogeneous LiNO3/graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile nanofibers, followed by carbonization at 900°C. Capacitive de-ionization was measured in a dynamic mode. The architectures show excellent electrical adsorption, which is enhanced by the incorporation of LiC6 and graphene with a higher electro-adsorption capacity and a faster adsorption rate due to the large surface area (393.64m2g−1) and good conductivity.

Abstract:<p>Capacitive deionization (CDI) has attracted considerable interest as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for water desalination. The fundamental working principle of CDI relies on ion electrosorption on the surface of a pair of electrically charged electrodes. Therefore, the development of more efficient electrode materials with high salt adsorption capacity is at the heart of CDI technology, and has motivated considerable efforts over the past decade. In particular, various carbon materials, including conventional activated carbon and various forms of porous carbon and graphene, have been intensively investigated as the CDI electrode materials for their electrochemical stability and large surface area, which typically relies solely on ion absorption and the formation of Helmholtz electrical double layer. It has more recently been shown that significant improvements in salt adsorption capacity can be further achieved either by functionalization of carbon surface with redox-active groups, or by introducing electrochemically active transition metal oxides or conductive polymers into the carbon matrix. Herein, we briefly summarize the fundamental principle of CDI technology, and review the recent progress in the design and development of high performance CDI electrode materials. We will conclude with a brief perspective on the current challenges and future opportunities in CDI technology.</p>

3D Graphene-supported N-doped Hierarchically Porous Carbon for Capacitive Deionization of Saline Water

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising technique for desalination of brackish water because it is highly energy-efficient and environmentallyfriendly. However, one of the most challenging issues in developing CDI technologies is the rational design and synthesis of active electrode materials, with favorable morphologies, reasonable porous structure, excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity. Herein, three-dimensional graphene-supported N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (3DNHPC) is rationally designed and originally prepared and applied in electrode materials for capacitive deionization. The 3DNHPCs are fabricated by a simple template-direct method using polyacrylonitrile coated polystyrene spheres as templates. The synthetic composites based on graphene have a hierarchically porous nanostructure with hollow mesoporous carbon spheres uniformly embedded in the graphene sheets. The hierarchically porous structure of 3DNHPC electrodes can ensure fast transport of salt ions and N-doped carbon can provide a bulk of adsorption sites for the formation of an electrical double layer due to its high specific surface area. Furthermore, the graphene sheets in the 3DNHPC act as the interconnected conductive networks result in fast charge transfer. Benefiting from the unique 3DNHPC structure, the composites possess high specific capacitance, low inner resistance and long cycling lifetime. A stable capacitive deionization performance with 25.5 mg g-1 salt adsorption capacity was achieved.

Abstract:Flow capacitive deionization is a water desalination technique that uses liquid carbon-based electrodes to recover fresh water from brackish or seawater. This is a potential second-generation water desalination process, however it is limited by parameters such as feed electrode conductivity, interfacial resistance, viscosity, and so on. In this study, titanium oxide nanofibers (TiO2NF) were manufactured using an electrospinning process and then blended with commercial activated carbon (AC) to create a well distributed flow electrode in this study. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to characterize the morphology, crystal structure, and chemical moieties of the as-synthesized composites. Notably, the flow electrode containing 1 wt.% TiO2NF (ACTiO2NF 1 wt.%) had the highest capacitance and the best salt removal rate (0.033 mg/min·cm2) of all the composites. The improvement in cell performance at this ratio indicates that the nanofibers are uniformly distributed over the electrode’s surface, preventing electrode passivation, and nanofiber agglomeration, which could impede ion flow to the electrode’s pores. This research suggests that the physical mixture could be used as a flow electrode in capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is one of the most promising energy-efficient technologies for water desalination, however its industrial translation is slow and impeded by limited electrosorption capacity, slow electrosorption rate and poor cycling stability. Herein we address the above challenges by developing and validating a new concept of unimpeded and selective full-cell anion-cation separation using custom-designed anion-kinetics-selective anode and cation-energy-selective cathode. Nanoporous graphene anode enables the selective anion kinetics, while cation selectivity on the functionalized MXene cathode is due to the difference in ion adsorption energy. These mechanisms are validated by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements. The finely-tuned balance between ion transport and adsorption causes unimpeded ion diffusion, leading to the higher electrosorption rates. These effects are guided by the atomistic and quantum chemistry simulations, and also confirmed experimentally by tuning the pore size of graphene anode and the functionalization of MXene cathode. The fabricated asymmetric CDI cell exhibits superior electrosorption capacity of 49 mg g(-1) and high electrosorption rate of 2.92 mg g(-1) min(-1) in 5000 mg L-1 NaCl solution as well as excellent cycling stability (100 cycles), which are among the best of the current state-of-the-art CDI studies. These results demonstrate the design of advanced electrode materials for the effective control of ion kinetics and energies to achieve selective ion transport, thus providing new insights for a broader range of energy-related applications.
Bio-composite nanoarchitectonics for graphene tofu as useful source material for capacitive deionization

Abstract:The development of low cost, naturally sustainable, and high-performance electrode materials is the primary issue that determines the large-scale application of capacitive deionization (CDI). In this work, the nitrogen-doped activated porous carbon decorated by 3D interconnected graphene (NAPC/G) was synthesized by pre-carbonization and KOH activation of soy milk and graphene oxide composite gel (graphene tofu). The NAPC has an ultra-high specific surface area (SSA) of 2993.5 m2 g−1, rich micro-mesoporous structure, and good hydrophilicity. In addition, the 3D graphene network enhances the conductivity of the composite. Therefore, benefited from the synergetic effect of abundant ions adsorption sites and improved conductivity, the specific capacitance of NAPC/G electrodes is up to 370 F g−1 and maintains capacitance retention of 97% after 3000 cycles. For CDI electrode materials, the salt adsorption capacity (SAC), desalination rate, and cycle stability are the three important parameters. In this work, the NAPC/G electrode achieves an high SAC of 38.5 mg g−1, large desalination rate of 6.6 mg g−1 min−1 and good cycle stability that desalination performance remains 93.5% after 50 cycles. This research provides an effective way to promote the sustainable large-scale application of CDI.

Abstract:Unimpeded ion traffic in carbon materials with ionic selectivity remains a challenge in electrochemical energy storage and chemical purifications represented by capacitive deionization (CDI) of potable and industrial water. In this work, a new concept of solar nano-ionics is developed to directly feed solar energy into photocarriers and localized electric fields near the edges of graphene nanostructures that enable effective, mobility-based ion transport with high mass exchange rates and selectivity. This concept is applied to demonstrate the new approach for CDI, namely the photo-electric capacitive deionization (PECDI), enabled by the solar-enhanced ionic transport. Materialized by edge-enhanced vertical graphenes (eVG), the photocarriers are localized along the edge nano-antennas of eVG to boost the edge-localized electric fields by two orders of magnitude, as confirmed by near-field photo-induced force microscopy. The localized photo-electric fields control and restructure the nanoionic flows leading to selective transport of ions with different mobility and dramatically enhanced kinetics, as validated by in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. With the photo-enhanced ionic transport kinetics, an average adsorption capacity of 33 mg g-1 at 200 mg L-1 (165 mg g-1 at 5000 mg L-1), a fast adsorption/desorption response and the impressive efficiency are achieved.
