Abstract:The desalination of seawater and brackish water is a desirable technique to address water scarcity today and in the uncertain future. Three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide–melamine formaldehyde composites (3D RGO–MF) were prepared by the carbonization of GO–MF composites, which were prepared through the electrostatic attraction between GO and MF nanoparticles. The obtained composites exhibited a hierarchical porous structure, with a specific surface area of 352 m2 g−1 and high degree of nitrogen doping of 10.86%. Thus, they had an enhanced specific capacity of 76.8 F g−1, which is much larger than that of a pristine RGO electrode (23 F g−1). With their enhanced electrochemical capacity, the as-prepared nitrogen-doped graphene composites were successfully employed as high performance electrodes for capacitive deionization. Their excellent electrochemical capacity with low inner resistance and high reversibility endows the 3D RGO–MF electrodes with an outstanding specific electrosorptive capacity of 21.93 mg g−1 at a direct voltage of 2.0 V in NaCl aqueous solution. It was confirmed that the 3D RGO–MF electrode is quite appropriate for high-performance capacitive deionization.

Abstract:In this work, metal–organic framework (MOF)/ reduced graphene oxide (RG)/ carbon nanotube (CNT) composite was synthesized by solvent method. Zeoliticimidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles were linked by CNT and attached to graphene lamelayer. After carbonization and acid etching, the obtained N-doped derived hierarchically porous carbon material (NPC/CNT-RG) possessed three-dimensional (3D) conductive network structure, which was not only conductive to promote ions rapidly diffusion, but also provide more active sites and shot the ions transport path. The NPC/CNT-RG electrode displayed a high specific capacitance of 412.5 F/g. Moreover, NPC/CNT-RG electrode exhibited an excellent desalination performance in NaCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 (initial concentration of 500 mg/L and the voltage set at 1.2 V) solutions, the salt adsorption capacity (SAC) were 28.99 mg/g, 33.01 mg/g and 34.84 mg/g, respectively. This derived carbon composite material as electrode might be beneficial to improve the desalination performance in CDI.

Abstract:Abundant endeavors have been undertaken to explore high-quality and inexpensive materials for capacitive deionization desalination. However, one major problem is the sluggish adsorption rate and inferior adsorption performance of these materials in practical applications. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon nanofiber-reinforced hierarchical hollow iron oxide nanorods grown on electrospinning carbon nanofibers (denoted Fe 2 O 3 @CNFs) were rationally designed and synthesized for high-efficiency capacitive deionization. Such composition and distinctive hierarchical porous structure prevent agglomeration of Fe 2 O 3 nanorods, boosting the ionic/electronic transport through the synergistic effect between the Fe 2 O 3 nanorods and N-doped carbon nanofibers. When employed as a cathode for capacitive deionization without adding any polymeric binder or conductive additives, this material exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 114.97 mg/g and a rapid salt adsorption rate (7.79 mg/g min). Moreover, the sodium storage mechanism was revealed through ex situ XRD, EDX mapping and ex situ XPS. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the electrons are redistributed at the heterojunction interface, refining the electrochemical activity. This work is anticipated to afford an innovative path for the development of porous transition metal oxide-based fibers with outstanding effectiveness and stability toward environmental research of high-performance capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Carbonaceous materials, one of the most important electrode materials for sea water desalination, have attracted tremendous attention. Herein, we develop a facile and effective two-step strategy to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon nanotubes/graphene/carbon nanofibers (CNTs/G/CNFs) composites for capacitive desalination application. Graphite oxide (GO), Ni2+, and Co2+ are introduced into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers by electrospinning method. During the annealing process, the PAN nanofibers are carbonized into CNFs felt, while the CNTs grow in situ on the surface of CNFs and graphite oxide are reduced into graphene simultaneously. Benefiting from the unique hierarchical porous structure, the as-prepared CNTs/G/CNFs composites have a large specific surface area of 223.9 m2 g−1 and excellent electrical conductivity. The maximum salt capacity of the composites can reach to 36.0 mg g−1, and the adsorbing capability maintains a large retention of 96.9% after five cycles. Moreover, the effective deionization time of the CNTs/G/CNFs composites lasts more than 30 min, much better than the commercial carbon fibers (C-CFs) and graphene/carbon nanofibers (G/CNFs) composites. Results suggest that the designed hierarchical porous CNTs/G/CNFs architecture could enhance the capacitive desalination properties of electrode materials. And the possible adsorption mechanism of the novel electrode materials is proposed as well.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology offering a green and efficient route to obtain clean water. According to its basic working mechanism, the covalent bond attached three-dimensional graphene/carbon nanotubes hybrid (G-CNTs) can be considered a promising material for CDI performance. In this paper, we present a novel strategy to improve wettability through moderate oxidation treatment for G-CNTs-based CDI electrodes because the poor wettability of G-CNTs will limit electrosorption performance. The results showed that the activated G-CNTs-1 h exhibited good cycling stability performance and high electrosorption capacity of 8.45 mg g(-1) when the initial concentration of NaCl was 500 mg L-1, more than twice that of the pristine G-CNTs (3.95 mg g(-1)). This work may provide a new insight into the future pretreatment of graphene or carbon nanotube based CDI electrode materials.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising technique for desalination of brackish water because it is highly energy-efficient and environmentallyfriendly. However, one of the most challenging issues in developing CDI technologies is the rational design and synthesis of active electrode materials, with favorable morphologies, reasonable porous structure, excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity. Herein, three-dimensional graphene-supported N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (3DNHPC) is rationally designed and originally prepared and applied in electrode materials for capacitive deionization. The 3DNHPCs are fabricated by a simple template-direct method using polyacrylonitrile coated polystyrene spheres as templates. The synthetic composites based on graphene have a hierarchically porous nanostructure with hollow mesoporous carbon spheres uniformly embedded in the graphene sheets. The hierarchically porous structure of 3DNHPC electrodes can ensure fast transport of salt ions and N-doped carbon can provide a bulk of adsorption sites for the formation of an electrical double layer due to its high specific surface area. Furthermore, the graphene sheets in the 3DNHPC act as the interconnected conductive networks result in fast charge transfer. Benefiting from the unique 3DNHPC structure, the composites possess high specific capacitance, low inner resistance and long cycling lifetime. A stable capacitive deionization performance with 25.5 mg g-1 salt adsorption capacity was achieved.

Abstract:Large-scale Li-ion doped graphene/carbon nanofiber porous architectures were prepared by electrospinning homogeneous LiNO3/graphene oxide/polyacrylonitrile nanofibers, followed by carbonization at 900°C. Capacitive de-ionization was measured in a dynamic mode. The architectures show excellent electrical adsorption, which is enhanced by the incorporation of LiC6 and graphene with a higher electro-adsorption capacity and a faster adsorption rate due to the large surface area (393.64m2g−1) and good conductivity.

Abstract:Two hybrid pseudocapacitive materials Na 8 Ti 5 O 14 /rGO (NTO/rGO) and Ti 3 C 2 T x /rGO (MXene/rGO) were successfully synthesized using two-step easy hydrothermal processes, respectively. In this carefully nano-engineered architecture, the dense structure of NTO synthesized firstly were intertwined with the rGO nanosheets framework; whereas the highly organized thoroughly exfoliated MXene nanosheet were deposited with rGO nanosheets. The electrochemical capacitances of both hybrid pseudocapacitive nanocomposites were increased by 99.7 % and 72.7 % compared to the nanocrystals only, the capacitance retention and impendence were also improved. In the CDI experiments, the high salt removal capacities of the hybrid nanocomposite NTO/rGO and MXene/rGO were obtained as 75.6 mg g −1 and 64.3 mg g −1 , which exceeded other reported values using similar electrodes. A 100 % regeneration in multiple cycles was achieved. This high desalting performance was attributed to the synergistic effect of efficient ion intercalation along with enhanced electrical conductivity and structure accessibility. These hybrid mechanism of ion intercalation and electrical double layer formation in action opened up the possibility of using hybrid pseudocapacitive nanocomposite electrodes such as Na 8 Ti 5 O 14 /rGO and Ti 3 C 2 T x /rGO for effective capacitive desalination. Their respective selectivity in aqueous ionic solution will be investigated in future studies.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization can alleviate water shortage and water environmental pollution, but performances are greatly determined by the electrochemical and desalination properties of its electrode materials. In this work, B and N co-doped porous carbon with micromesoporous structures is derived from sodium alginate by a carbonization, activation, and hydrothermal doping process, which exhibits large specific surface area (2587 m 2 ·g − 1 ) and high specific capacitance (190.7 F·g − 1 ) for adsorption of salt ions and heavy metal ions. Furthermore, the materials provide a desalination capacity of 26.9 mg·g − 1 at 1.2 V in 500 mg·L − 1 NaCl solution as well as a high removal capacity (239.6 mg·g − 1 ) and adsorption rate (7.99 mg·g − 1 ·min − 1 ) for Pb 2+ with an excellent cycle stability. This work can pave the way to design low-cost porous carbon with high-performances for removal of salt ions and heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a technology with excellent potential for applications in the field of desalination and water treatment. Graphene is considered to be an ideal material in the field of CDI due to its large surface area and high electrical conductivity. However, the severe π-π restacking of graphene sheets leads to problems such as long ion transport distances and small interlayer distances, which result in low desalination capacity and poor cycling performance. Herein, we prepared partially reduced holey graphene oxide by H 2 O 2 treatment and subsequent ascorbic acid reduction of graphene oxide, which led to high specific capacitance and cyclic stability. The partially remaining oxygen-containing functional groups can act as spacers to effectively prevent π-π stacking phenomenon from occurring in graphene sheets, which provides sufficient storage space to facilitate the rapid transfer of ions. As electrode material for CDI, the electrode delivers a desalination capacity as high as 22.4 mg g −1 (applied potential: 1.4 V; initial NaCl concentration: 1500 ppm) and good cycling performance (desalination capacity retention of 81.5 % after 50 cycles). This rational combination of surface etching and partial reduction strategies can be used to fabricate high-performance CDI electrodes, which are expected to be applied to other energy storage and conversion systems.

Abstract:Carbon-based capacitive deionization (CDI) systems are universally subject to the limited desalination capacity, due to the electrosorption characteristics and undesirable pore structures. Herein, a two-pronged strategy is proposed to boost the desalination performance of the electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs), where silicalite-1 nanoparticles as the internal porogen create mesopores and macropores, and zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L) leaves as the external carbon source provide micropores and mesopores. This combination results in the large surface area, well-developed graded pore structure, and increased nitrogen content of the core-shell polyacrylonitrile/silicalite-1@ZIF-L-derived CNFs (defined as PCNFs-SZ) electrode, which delivers a superior specific capacitance of 145.4 F g −1 in a neutral electrolyte. The symmetric CDI cell assembled by the self-supporting PCNFs-SZ membrane electrodes holds a prominent desalination capacity of 37.09 mg g −1 and a rapid salt removal rate of 10.36 mg g −1 min −1 at 1.2 V (initial NaCl concentration: 500 mg L −1 ), and demonstrates significant potential for real-world applications in the desalination and purification of reclaimed water. Furthermore, theory calculations confirm the enhanced Na + -capture capability of PCNFs-SZ. The present work highlights an effective and viable approach to enhance the desalination performance of carbon-based CDI cells.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an alternative, effective and environmentally friendly technology for desalination of brackish water. The performance of the CDI device is highly determined by the electrode materials. In this paper, a composite of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in activated carbon nanofiber (ACF) was prepared by a direct co-electrospinning way and subsequent CO2 activation. The introduction of CNTs can greatly improve the conductivity while the CO2-mediated activation can render the final product with high porosity. As such, the hybrid structure can provide an excellent storage space and pathways for ion adsorption and conduction. When evaluated as electrode materials for CDI, the as-prepared CNT/ACF composites with higher electrical conductivity and mesopore ratios exhibited higher electrosorption capacity and good regeneration performance in comparison with the pure ACF.

Abstract:<p>Capacitive deionization (CDI) has attracted considerable interest as an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach for water desalination. The fundamental working principle of CDI relies on ion electrosorption on the surface of a pair of electrically charged electrodes. Therefore, the development of more efficient electrode materials with high salt adsorption capacity is at the heart of CDI technology, and has motivated considerable efforts over the past decade. In particular, various carbon materials, including conventional activated carbon and various forms of porous carbon and graphene, have been intensively investigated as the CDI electrode materials for their electrochemical stability and large surface area, which typically relies solely on ion absorption and the formation of Helmholtz electrical double layer. It has more recently been shown that significant improvements in salt adsorption capacity can be further achieved either by functionalization of carbon surface with redox-active groups, or by introducing electrochemically active transition metal oxides or conductive polymers into the carbon matrix. Herein, we briefly summarize the fundamental principle of CDI technology, and review the recent progress in the design and development of high performance CDI electrode materials. We will conclude with a brief perspective on the current challenges and future opportunities in CDI technology.</p>

Bio-composite nanoarchitectonics for graphene tofu as useful source material for capacitive deionization

Abstract:The development of low cost, naturally sustainable, and high-performance electrode materials is the primary issue that determines the large-scale application of capacitive deionization (CDI). In this work, the nitrogen-doped activated porous carbon decorated by 3D interconnected graphene (NAPC/G) was synthesized by pre-carbonization and KOH activation of soy milk and graphene oxide composite gel (graphene tofu). The NAPC has an ultra-high specific surface area (SSA) of 2993.5 m2 g−1, rich micro-mesoporous structure, and good hydrophilicity. In addition, the 3D graphene network enhances the conductivity of the composite. Therefore, benefited from the synergetic effect of abundant ions adsorption sites and improved conductivity, the specific capacitance of NAPC/G electrodes is up to 370 F g−1 and maintains capacitance retention of 97% after 3000 cycles. For CDI electrode materials, the salt adsorption capacity (SAC), desalination rate, and cycle stability are the three important parameters. In this work, the NAPC/G electrode achieves an high SAC of 38.5 mg g−1, large desalination rate of 6.6 mg g−1 min−1 and good cycle stability that desalination performance remains 93.5% after 50 cycles. This research provides an effective way to promote the sustainable large-scale application of CDI.

Abstract:Metal oxide nanoparticles are one kind of important electrode materials for capacitive deionization (CDI) application. Unfortunately, most metal oxide materials usually exhibit poor electrical conductivity and often experience slow dissolution of metallic species, thereby resulting in limited desalination performance. Overcoming these obstacles still remains challenging due to the lack of synthetic approaches. Taking it into consideration, herein we proposed a dual confinement strategy to promote the CDI application of metal oxide nanoparticles. Nb 2 O 5 was synthesized as a typical example for designing metal oxide/MXene-reduced graphene oxide (rGO) derived from Nb 2 CT x /graphene oxide (GO) under hydrothermal condition. In the hybrid, Nb 2 CT x and rGO serve as both the confinement agent and conductive support for Nb 2 O 5 nanoparticles, endowing Nb 2 O 5 /Nb 2 CT x -rGO with improved electronic conductivity and structural stability. As a result, the hybrid shows outstanding desalination performance, including a NaCl adsorption capacity of 41.07 mg g −1 , an ultra-fast average NaCl adsorption rate of 4.14 mg g −1 min −1 and excellent long-term cycling stability of 50 cycles (81 % desalination capacity retention rate). This work is expected to bring new insights in the synthesis of metal oxide materials for electrochemical desalination.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) based on the theory of a double electric layer has received much attention in the past two decades as a highly promising desalination technology, and carbon nanospheres are considered promising carbon-based electrode materials for CDI, which have been investigated by a large number of researchers. However, the isolation between the spheres greatly increases the contact resistance, limiting their application in CDI. To understand the effect of structure on the performance of CDI and to obtain a better CDI performance, solid carbon spheres and monodisperse hollow carbon spheres were prepared and compared with interconnected hollow carbon spheres (IHCSs). The resulting IHCSs, with their unique cavity structure and interconnected carbon walls, exhibited superior electrochemical performance and electrosorption capacity. In addition, we improved the electrical conductivity, surface wettability, and adsorption properties of the carbon nanospheres by incorporating nitrogen doping. By adjusting the amount of nitrogen functional groups in the carbon nanosphere precursors, we produced interconnected hollow carbon nanospheres with similar structures (particle size, specific surface area, and porosity) but different nitrogen contents and investigated the effects of different nitrogen contents on the CDI properties of hollow carbon nanospheres. The results indicated that interconnected hollow carbon nanospheres with a high nitrogen content (designated as NFs-2) demonstrated the best CDI performance, achieving an electrochemical adsorption capacity of 20.43 mg g(-1) in a NaCl solution with a concentration of 500 mg L-1. Additionally, NFs-2 exhibited the largest specific surface area of 728 m(2) g(-1). Furthermore, NFs-2 displayed excellent cycle stability in a desalination cycle using a 100 mg L-1 NaCl solution, retaining up to 97.17% of its initial desalination capacity after 25 sorption-desorption cycles. These findings highlight the promising applications of NFs-2 in CDI technology.
Enhanced Capacitive Deionization Properties of Activated Carbon Doped with Carbon Nanotube-Bridged Molybdenum Disulfide

Abstract:The shortage of freshwater supplies has restricted societal development. Capacitive deionization (CDI) is an emerging technology for desalination of seawater or brackish water, the performance of which is highly dependent on electrode materials. In this work, a molybdenum disulfide/carbon nanotube composite (CNTs-b-MoS2) with high capacitance was successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method. The composite exhibited a specific capacitance of 112.79 F g-1. To reduce costs and determine the practicality of using CNTs-b-MoS2 for CDI, we combined activated carbon (AC) with CNTs-b-MoS2 as a CDI electrode. The research demonstrated that after doping with 5% (mass ratio) CNTs-b-MoS2, the specific capacitance and electrosorption capacity of AC were significantly improved and the maximum desalination capacity of CNTs-b-MoS2/AC reached 8.19 mg g-1. The low dosage of CNTs-b-MoS2 combined with the high specific surface area of AC avoided the shortcomings of CNTs-b-MoS2, namely low specific surface area and high cost. Moreover, the outstanding con-ductivity of CNTs-b-MoS2 improved the conductivity and enhanced the adsorption capacity of AC, giving CNTs-b-MoS2/AC potential as an advanced, low-cost CDI electrode material.

Abstract:Exploring a new-family of carbon-based desalinators to optimize their performances beyond the current commercial benchmark is of significance for the development of practically useful capacitive deionization (CDI) materials. Here, we have fabricated a hierarchically porous N,P-doped carbon-graphene 2D heterostructure (denoted NPC/rGO) by using metal-organic framework (MOF)-nanoparticle-driven assembly on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets followed by stepwise pyrolysis and phosphorization procedures. The resulting NPC/rGO-based CDI desalinator exhibits ultrahigh deionization performance with a salt adsorption capacity of 39.34 mg g(-1) in a 1000 mg L-1 NaCl solution at 1.2 V over 30 min with good cycling stability over 50 cycles. The excellent performance is attributed to the high specific surface area, high conductivity, favorable meso-/microporous structure together with nitrogen and phosphorus heteroatom co-doping, all of which are beneficial for the accommodation of ions and charge transport during the CDI process. More importantly, NPC/rGO exhibits a state-of-the-art CDI performance compared to the commercial benchmark and most of the previously reported carbon materials, highlighting the significance of the MOF nanoparticle-driven assembly strategy and graphene-carbon 2D heterostructures for CDI applications.
