Abstract:The 14th Electromagnetic and Light Scattering Conference (ELS-XIV) was held at the Universit de Lille 1, Villeneuve d'Ascq, France on 17-21 June 2013. The conference was attended by 200 scientists from 26 countries. The scientific program included one plenary lecture, 12 invited reviews, 100 contributed oral talks, and 86 poster presentations. The program, the abstracts, and the slides of the oral presentations are available at the conference web site http:www-loa.univ-lille1.frELS-XIV. To highlight one of the traditional ELS themes, the ELS-XIV featured a special session on Remote sensing of aerosols and clouds using polarimetric observations. This session was sponsored and co-organized by the French space agency CNES and attracted representatives from nearly all research teams word-wide involved in the development and active use of space-borne, in situ, and ground-based polarimetric observations.

Abstract:Abstract. The ISPRS Technical Commission I Midterm Symposium on "Intelligent Sensing and Remote Sensing Application" was held in Changsha, China, during May 13–17, 2024, aiming to provide a platform to share the latest researches, advanced technologies and application experience, to discuss the future development and to seek international cooperation in various forms. The Symposium has received 229 full paper and abstract s, among them 45 double-blind peer-reviewed full papers were published in ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information, and 165 papers accepted through abstract review were published in the International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences. These papers are mostly dedicated to topics of the 8 TC I Working Groups, 3 Inter-commission Working Groups, including Satellite Missions and Constellations for Remote Sensing, Mobile Mapping Technology, Multispectral, Hyperspectral and Thermal Sensors, LiDAR, Laser Altimetry and Sensor Integration, Microwave and InSAR Technology for Earth Observation, Orientation, Calibration and Validation of Sensors, Data Quality and Benchmark of Sensors, Multi-sensor Modelling and Cross-modality Fusion, Robotics for Mapping and Machine Intelligence, Autonomous Sensing Systems and their Applications, Digital Construction: Reality Capture, Automated Inspection and Integration to BIM, Point Cloud Generation and Processing, Artificial Intelligence Technology Related to Sensor Systems, Multi-sensor Remote Sensing Applications.. These papers presented the latest trends of sensor systems. The full papers and abstracts were reviewed by the members of the Symposium Scientific Committee comprised of Working Group officers and invited experts. Abstract:In this paper, research progress in Fudan WSRSC during recent four years on theoretical modeling and data validation is reported. A theoretical model of multi-level, non-spherical scatterers is developed for completely polarized scattering in SAR remote sensing image. The Mueller matrix, coherency matrix and its eigen-analysis are discussed. Comprehensive vector radiative transfer (VRT) theory and numerical approaches for multi-level non-spherical and densely clustered scatterers are developed for the earth surfaces such as snowpack, vegetation canopy, sea surface, etc. Numerical results simulate the observations of DMSP SSM/I, ERS and other microwave remote sensing sensors. The algorithm and retrieval method of data calibration/validation for satellite-borne microwave remote sensing are discussed with theoretical simulations. Correlation of active and passive remote sensing such as ERS and SSM/I and are simulated and discussed.

Advances in Study of Snow-cover from Remote Sensing Data

Abstract:The main sources of remote sensing data and data processing methods of snow information retrieval are introduced. For the optical remote sensing, the AVHRR and MODIS data were widely used to distinguish the snow cover from other land cover types mostly according to the high reflectance of snow in the visible band and low in the near infrared band; and the snow cover area and depth also can be obtained by regression equations. With advanced sensors, the data from MODIS is obviously superior to that from AVHRR in algorithms and resolution to derive the snow information. For the microwave remote sensing: passive microwave remote sensing has all-weather and day-night data acquisition capability, the earth surface information can be obtained in whole day. So it is more useful to detect the snow depth than optical remote sensing. The snow cover was detected through retrieving the brightness temperature of snow. Active microwave remote sensing can estimate snow cover by different backscattering coefficient. Finally, the main problem and development trends of snow information retrieval technique by using satellite remote sensing data are discussed.

Abstract:The Inter-Society Technology Panel (ISTP) program was established in 2021 by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Technology Society (MTT-S) as a new initiative under the auspices of the MTT-S Inter-Society Committee. This program, currently led by Drs. Ke Wu and J.-C. Chiao, collaborated with the 2023 European Microwave Week (EuMW) Steering Committee and ISTP organizers to develop two exciting panels for EuMW 2023 in Berlin, Germany. The ISTP program's goal is to provide an international platform for collaboration and exchanges of ideas among members of MTT-S, other IEEE entities (societies and councils), and non-IEEE organizations. These panels aim to facilitate discussions on cross-disciplinary research and development, involving academia, industry, standards, and commercial sectors in the context of emerging technologies and applications.

Abstract:Due to the advance of space-borne remote sensing technology in recent decades, the transition from data to information of the earth environment has become of great importance. Interaction of electromagnetic waves with the earth environment should be well modeled and applied to information retrieval. The most important advances of po--larimetric scattering for SAR imagery and vector radiative transfer theory for scattering and emission of natural media are briefly presented. Some examples from the SAR SIR-C and DMSP SSM/I observations and information inversions are demonstrated. Some key points for future research are discussed.
Scattering and Emission Models for Microwave Remote Sensing of Snow Using Numerical Solutions of Maxwell Equations

Abstract:Snowpack consists of ice grains that are densely packed in the wavelength scale at microwave frequencies so that the coherent microwave interactions among the ice grains are important in microwave signatures. We have used Numerical Maxwell Model of 3D simulations (NMM3D) of random media/discrete scatterer to study such interactions. In the partial coherent model of Dense Media Radiative Transfer (DMRT), we use NMM3D to calculate the effective propagation constants, the extinction coefficients and the phase matrices. These are then used in radiative transfer equations to calculate the emission and backscattering signatures. In the fully coherent model, we use NMM3D to calculate the bistatic scattering and emissivity for a layer of snow pack over the ground. Using the fully coherent approach, we calculate the complex scattering amplitudes from the snowpack, including both magnitude and phase. In microstructure characterization of snow, we have used 2 models a) densely packed scatters of sticky particles or multiple sizes, and b) computer generated bicontinuous media. Both models can be characterized by correlation functions. In this paper, we also describe the recent simulated results for tomography and co-polarization phase differences of anisotropic dense media.

Abstract:Highly accurate observations at various scales on the land surface are urgently needed for the studies of many areas, such as hydrology, meteorology, and agriculture. With the rapid development of remote sensing techniques, remote sensing has had the capacity of monitoring many factors of the Earth's land surface. Especially, the space-borne microwave remote sensing systems have been widely used in the quantitative monitoring of global snow, soil moisture, and vegetation parameters with their all-weather, all-time observation capabilities and their sensitivities to the characteristics of land surface factors. Based on the electromagnetic theories and microwave radiative transfer equations, researchers have achieved great successes in the microwave remote sensing studies for different sensors in recent years. This article has systematically reviewed the progresses on five research areas including microwave theoretical modeling, microwave inversion on soil moisture, snow, vegetation and land surface temperatures. Through the further enrichment of remote sensing datasets and the development of remote sensing theories and inversion techniques, remote sensing including microwave remote sensing will play a more important role in the studies and applications of the Earth systems.
