Abstract:With the deepening exploration of space by humans,traditional radio frequency(RF)communication increasingly fails to meet the demands of high-speed deep space communication.Various spacefaring nations have undertaken research on deep space optical communication technology.Optical communication is a crucial means of achieving space communication.Compared to traditional RF communication,optical communication offers advantages such as high communication speed,small terminal payload,strong anti-interference capabilities and so on,making it more suitable for ultra-long-distance deep space communication.Currently,the United States leads in research and has successfully conducted two deep space optical communication demonstrations.This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing research plans and demonstration results in deep space optical communication.It analyzes the key technologies for implementing deep space optical communication,reflects on the developmental history,and contemplates the future prospects of deep space optical communication.

Abstract:Satellite communications (SatComs) have recently entered a period of renewed interest motivated by technological advances and nurtured through private investment and ventures. The present survey aims at capturing the state of the art in SatComs, while highlighting the most promising open research topics. Firstly, the main innovation drivers are motivated, such as new constellation types, on-board processing capabilities, non-terrestrial networks and space-based data collection/processing. Secondly, the most promising applications are described, i.e., 5G integration, space communications, Earth observation, aeronautical and maritime tracking and communication. Subsequently, an in-depth literature review is provided across five axes: i) system aspects, ii) air interface, iii) medium access, iv) networking, v) testbeds & prototyping. Finally, a number of future challenges and the respective open research topics are described.

Abstract:The low-Earth orbiting (LEO) satellite constellations in the 90s (such as Iridium and Globalstar), although representing a major technical breakthrough, were not able to achieve the initial goal of complementing the second-generation mobile terrestrial networks due to the rapid worldwide adoption of GSM and other standards. However, the decline of conventional linear television and the persisting need to mitigate the digital divide still affecting billions of people recently generated a renewed interest by private investors for Low-Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite mega-constellations. The mega-constellations under deployment can provide lower delays versus geostationary (GEO) satellites, broadband access anywhere, anytime leveraging the low-cost series production of small satellites, and more affordable launch solutions. At the end of the last decade, key industrial players realized the potential complementary role satellites can play to extend the 5G terrestrial network coverage over low-density populated areas, oceans, or similar. This has led to great technological developments and a sharp reduction in LEO satellite volume, weight, and, ultimately, manufacturing and launching costs. Also, it has triggered the inclusion of a non terrestrial network (NTN) component in the latest 5G 3GPP standard releases. Yet, there are many technological challenges remaining to ensure that both the quality and cost of the NTN services are comparable to the terrestrial counterpart. This is mainly due to the constraints in satellite payload power, mass, and antenna size. This comes in addition to the stringent power flux density limitations on the ground, in particular in the below 6 GHz satellite bands. The required order of magnitude increase of the effective delivered throughput and service cost reduction can only be achieved by a mix of system architectures and innovative technologies for both the space and ground segments. Space communication systems and technologies will also play a key role in human return to the Moon planned for mid-2020, to prepare for human exploration of Mars in the more distant future and further cosmic exploration. As missions voyage further from Earth, it is important to consider how we can continue to reliably communicate with them and how they will accurately navigate through space when they are so far from home.

Abstract:Given the increasing number of space-related applications, research in the emerging space industry is becoming more and more attractive. One compelling area of current space research is the design of miniaturized satellites, known as CubeSats, which are enticing because of their numerous applications and low design-and-deployment cost. The new paradigm of connected space through CubeSats makes possible a wide range of applications, such as Earth remote sensing, space exploration, and rural connectivity. CubeSats further provide a complementary connectivity solution to the pervasive Internet of Things (IoT) networks, leading to a globally connected cyber-physical system. This paper presents a holistic overview of various aspects of CubeSat missions and provides a thorough review of the topic from both academic and industrial perspectives. We further present recent advances in the area of CubeSat communications, with an emphasis on constellation-and-coverage issues, channel modeling, modulation and coding, and networking. Finally, we identify several future research directions for CubeSat communications, including Internet of space things, low-power long-range networks, and machine learning for CubeSat resource allocation.

Abstract:Since the first space probe flew to the Moon in 1959, over 200 deep-space exploration missions have already been carried out on the eight planets, various asteroids and comets in the solar system. Amount of deep-space scientific experiments promoted people to understand about the origin and evolution of the universe. With the rapid developments of equipment and spacecraft with high-accuracy detector and long-term energy, more and more ambitious deep-space exploration plans have also been scheduled or under discussion about space resources utilization and space migration, e.g., manned landing on the Mars, guard infrastructures on the Moon and human-flight to the edge of the solar system (>100 AU), etc.

Abstract:Space communications are challenged by long delays, high error probability, frequent intermittent connectivity and link disruption. The challenges promote the progressive improvements of space communications technologies and networking architectures. Nowadays, the physical layer technologies are unable to meet the needs of more complex scientific activities. The communication means is transforming into hop-to-hop to guarantee the reliability and efficiency of a communications process over an interplanetary network. A universal infrastructure for interplanetary networking and novel communication technologies are needed urgently for scientific research and possible commercial applications in the near future. This paper discusses the state-of-the-art of interplanetary communication technologies and network architecture. A networked interplanetary architecture under Earth-Mars scenario is envisioned. A brief overview of Delay/Disruption-Tolerant Network (DTN) architecture are presented. Several representative applications and experiments in space DTN are discussed in details relative to terrestrial DTN applications. Finally, some open issues, such as network modeling, routing, congestion control, security and free space optical communication, are presented for further research.

Abstract:With the development of deep space exploration technologies, main space agencies all over the world are working hard to develop the solar system interplanetary communication networks(SSICN). SSICN is a perspective communication networking system characterized by high data rate, high intelligent and perfect interconnection, which could provide the deep-space mission control and scientific application with the convenient, reliable and secure data transmission services. Following the introduction of future deep space exploration prospect, this paper analyzes the similarities and differences for three networks, terrestrial internet, near Earth space networks and SSICN, then discusses the key technologies and research trends of SSICN in details, and finally proposes the suggestions for the construction of future Chinese SSICN.
