Abstract:Humanities and Social Sciences ( HSS) are undergoing the transformation of spatialization and quantification. Geo-computation, with geoinformatics ( including RS: Remote Sensing;GIS: Geographical Information System;GNSS: Global Navigation Satellite System) , provides effective computational and spatialization methods and tools for HSS. Spatial Humanities and Geo-computation for Social Sciences ( SH&GSS) is a field coupling geo-computation, and geoinformatics, with HSS. This special issue accepted a set of contributions highlighting recent advances in methodologies and applications of SH&GSS, which are related to sentiment spatial analysis from social media data, emotional change spatial analysis from news data, spatial analysis of social media related to COVID-19, crime spatiotemporal analysis,"double evaluation"for Land Use/Land Cover (LUCC), Specially Protected Natural Areas (SPNA) analysis, editing behavior analysis of Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI), electricity consumption anomaly detection, First and Last Mile Problem ( FLMP ) of public transport, and spatial interaction network analysis for crude oil trade network. Based on these related researches, we aim to present an overview of SH&GSS, and propose some future research directions for SH&HSS.

Abstract:Frontiers in cartographic research are often found at the intersections where cartography overlaps with other domains in art, science, and technology. In this editorial, we summarize the major themes that are found in a new collection of invited literature reviews. Broad themes that emerge from this collection include the rise of novel virtual environments, ongoing user-centered design challenges for improving the utility and usability of geographic visualizations, and new approaches for representation and analysis for the development of geovisualizations.

Abstract:Increased environmental and social risk, ubiquitous information technology, and growing demands for and growing threats to democracy and public participation will alter the education and practice of all the design professions and the geographically oriented sciences, and the ways in which their activities towards influencing environmental and social change are organized and carried out. We all know about these trends, but we do not take them seriously enough. We are not adapting fast enough towards education or professional practice that is collaborative and globally oriented.

Abstract:In the last decades green infrastructure planning, design, and management have been widely recognized as a way to contribute to reach higher levels of sustainability of development. However, often green infrastructures are considered in a sectoral way, while their design should be more integrated within comprehensive planning and design. The paper proposes the use of geodesign methods and technology to support the early phases of integrated strategic territorial planning, in order to enrich the relationships between the design of green infrastructure and of the other relevant systems via more comprehensive planning and design, and by applying systems thinking. A case study developed with architecture and engineering students under the umbrella of the International Geodesign Collaboration is used, to demonstrate how with intensive geodesign workshops it is possible to create spatially explicit design scenarios which take into account the relationships between green infrastructure and other territorial systems and dynamics. A set of analyses on the case study results of the two scales is used to demonstrate the assumption. It is also argued that geodesign intensive workshops can, in a very short time, contribute to raising the awareness among the participants of collaborative design to the importance of green infrastructure in strategic territorial planning.

Abstract:In the last decade, real-time access to data and the use of high-resolution spatial information have provided scientists and engineers with valuable information to help them understand risk. At the same time, there has been a rapid growth of novel and cutting-edge information and communication technologies for the collection, analysis and dissemination of data, re-inventing the way in which risk management is carried out throughout its cycle (risk identification and reduction, preparedness, disaster relief and recovery). The applications of those geospatial technologies are expected to enable better mitigation of, and adaptation to, the disastrous impact of natural hazards. The description of risks may particularly benefit from the integrated use of new algorithms and monitoring techniques. The ability of new tools to carry out intensive analyses over huge datasets makes it possible to perform future risk assessments, keeping abreast of temporal and spatial changes in hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The present special issue aims to describe the state-of-the-art of natural risk assessment, management, and communication using new geospatial models and Earth Observation (EO)architecture. More specifically, we have collected a number of contributions dealing with: (1) applications of EO data and machine learning techniques for hazard, vulnerability and risk mapping; (2) natural hazards monitoring and forecasting geospatial systems; (3) modeling of spatiotemporal resource optimization for emergency management in the post-disaster phase; and (4) development of tools and platforms for risk projection assessment and communication of inherent uncertainties.

Abstract:Territorial and environmental problems demand, now more than ever, and particularly in Italy where the situation is dramatic, the constant presence of the geologist in all social, cultural, economic and territorial contexts. It is necessary to act with greater authority and to make the public aware of how the territory in which they live can be both a source of risk and a resource. Knowledge is the key tool; the diffusion of scientific heritage, using well known and appreciated topics that are more accessible to the public, may represent one of the goals for the communication and sensitivity versus natural disasters. From the latest dramatic events in Italy emerged the need to create a new kind of communication that can activate a wider and conscious target, providing society with correct and clear information about the geo-environmental conditions in Italy. There is an obvious need for a new approach to the problems related to the complex context that now shows us a planet going beyond the critical point. A holistic approach is imperative, that is a one that considers the environmental and social ecosystem in its entirety, providing all policy makers with a realistic view of the situation and of possible developments. In fact, a big problem for scientists as well as for society, is the prediction of natural disasters. Knowing what is going to happen, as accurately as possible, is the key to be able to provide an effective warning of the population and plan action to safeguard people and properties.

Abstract:Starting from the conclusion of the previous report by Innes Keighren on the history and philosophy of geography, this report assesses the ‘state of the art’ of current attempts to make this field of studies more inclusive and to foster the increasing acknowledgement of geography’s plural pasts. It does so by analysing scholarship published this year (including contributions from outside the Anglosphere), which rediscovers geographical traditions other than Northern ones, diversifies archives and places by including feminist, decolonial and subaltern outlooks, and addresses geographical traditions in radicalism and activism, increasingly connecting this field of studies with wider scholarly and political debates.
