Georisk Assessment and Management of Risk for Engineered Systems and Geohazards
Abstract:This special issue is a companion to the special issue on "Machine Learning and AI in Geotechnics" that was published by Georisk as Volume 17, Issue 1 in 2023 (Phoon et al. Citation 2023a ). The 2023 special issue contains one foresight review paper on the "Future of machine learning in geotechnics" (Phoon and Zhang Citation 2023 ), 12 technical papers on the application of machine learning to site characterization (2 papers), soil behavior (1 paper), soil dynamics (1 paper), landslides (2 papers), tunnelling (4 papers), and mining (2 papers), and a report for the ISSMGE TC309/TC304/TC222 Third Machine Learning in Geotechnics Dialogue (Phoon, Zhang, and Cao Citation 2023b ). The current companion special issue (Volume 18, Issue 1 in 2024) contains one spotlight article on "Digital Geotechnics: from Data-driven Site Characterization towards Digital Transformation and Intelligence in Geotechnical Engineering" (Wang and Tian Citation 2024 ), 2 review papers (Chen, Zhang, and Yin Citation 2024 ; Bozorgzadeh and Feng Citation 2024 ), 13 technical papers on the application of machine learning (ML) to engineering practice (2 on site characterization, 3 on slope stability analysis, 5 on landslides, and 3 on tunneling), a report for the ISSMGE TC309/TC304/TC222 and ASCE Geo-Institute Risk Assessment and Management Committee Fourth Machine Learning in Geotechnics Dialogue (Leung et al. Citation 2024 ), a report for the First Workshop on the "Future of Machine Learning in Geotechnics (FOMLIG)" (Phoon and Shuku Citation 2024 ), and a book review (Fatahi Citation 2024 ).

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to better utilize data - driven methods in geotechnical engineering to improve the quality and efficiency of decision - making. Specifically, this special issue brings together a series of studies on "practice - oriented data - centric geotechnical engineering" and aims to explore the following aspects: 1. **Data - driven geotechnical engineering practice**: By using technologies such as big data and machine learning, improve the decision - making quality of geotechnical engineering projects, especially in the applications of site characterization, slope stability analysis, landslide prediction and tunnel construction. 2. **Challenges of data quality and quantity**: Many geotechnical engineering data sets have problems such as multi - variables, uncertainty and irregularity, and there may also be data missing in the modeling and prediction stages. Therefore, how to effectively process these complex data and construct high - quality training data sets has become an important topic. 3. **Evaluation and application of machine - learning models**: Propose and discuss the standards and guidelines for evaluating the application of machine - learning models in geotechnical engineering practice, especially considering the applicability of the models, data types, and their quality and quantity. 4. **Inter - disciplinary cooperation**: Emphasize the cooperation between the geotechnical engineering industry and academia, especially the importance of testing machine - learning solutions in actual projects and jointly developing relevant standards and regulations such as data management with government agencies. 5. **Future prospects**: Discuss the development trends of data - centric geotechnical engineering, including possible challenges and opportunities, such as the application prospects of robotics in the construction industry. In summary, this collection of papers focuses on how to promote the digital transformation in the field of geotechnical engineering through data - driven methods and technologies, and improve the intelligence level and safety of engineering projects.
