Abstract:With sustainable developments in transportation facilities, the construction of the undersea tunnel has become inevitable. Controlling the construction and operation of the undersea tunnel structures dynamically and ensuring their safety is of primary concern. Therefore, using the rich water mountain section of the Lujiazhi subsea tunnel constructed by NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) as a case study, an intelligent real-time tunnel health monitoring system integrating tunnel monitoring, wireless transmission and safety assessment was developed. The monitoring results show that the surrounding rock water pressure, earth pressure and stress of the secondary lining structure experienced stages of rapid change, continuous change and stability. The tunnel substructure is relatively weak as a whole, and the left invert is the weakest part of the whole structure. It was suggested to optimize and reinforce the tunnel substructure accordingly. The rationality of the tunnel drainage system and reliability of field test data are verified by numerical simulation. Finally, the real-time fuzzy comprehensive evaluation model of tunnel operation safety conditions based on online monitoring data is established to realise the real-time evaluation and early warning of Lujiazhi tunnel structures' health conditions. An intelligent real-time tunnel health monitoring system is developed. The deformation characteristics of submarine tunnel are revealed. The submarine tunnel drainage system rationality of lining structure are proved. The safety evaluation model of submarine tunnel structure is proposed.

Abstract:Tunnel construction as a typical geotechnical engineering, compared with other civil engineering, has the characteristics of high uncertainty, which brings great challenges to the early design, middle construction and late operation. The so-called tunnel information construction is mainly based on advanced geological prediction, monitoring and measurement data and other information, combined with the actual geological description in the excavation process, timely decision-making on the site, rapid change of construction methods, or adjustment of support structure, in order to adapt to changes in geological conditions, so as to achieve dynamic feedback construction. Because of the advantages of tunnel information construction in modern tunnel construction, and there are many successful cases at home and abroad, it is necessary to have a systematic understanding of it. Based on the above background, the research status and successful cases of tunnel informatization construction at home and abroad are summarized. Abstract:When a tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavates in poor geological conditions like fracture zones, soft rock with high ground stress, hard rock with high ground stress, and water inrush ground, severe problems such as surrounding rock collapse, convergence, rock burst and water and mud outburst are usually encountered. These problems existed in the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel project in Xinjiang, China. Several methods and techniques were adopted to reduce construction risks and improve construction efficiency. The seismic wave reflection long-distance geological forecasting method was employed to forecast and predict these adverse geological conditions. The pre-reinforcement construction method was employed on the surrounding broken rocks in front of the tunnel face to lower the risks of tunnel collapse and machine jamming. A combined steel arch was applied to prevent tunnel arch collapse. An artificial cap method was applied to prevent the jamming caused by high-ground stress soft rock. Measures such as spraying water on the tunnel face and drilling stress holes were employed to prevent rock bursts caused by high-ground stress in hard rock. Implementing the advanced pipe shed method during water influx, sudden mud, and other working conditions reduced the risk of groundwater damage to equipment and lowered risks to personnel safety. The successful application of these techniques can provide a reference for TBM tunnel construction in similar ground conditions.
Application of 3D laser scanning on NATM tunnel deformation measurement during construction

Abstract:The 3D laser scanning technology is implemented to multi-temporally scan the lining of a NATM tunnel during construction. An improved moving average method (IMAM) is firstly proposed for downsizing the scanned point clouds. The correspondence between two temporal point clouds is determined by the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, and then the deformation between each paired points was obtained throughout the data. Subsequently, the full-space deformation field of tunnel lining can be calculated, which provides extensive deformation information of the complete tunnel lining for construction. The verification is conducted by a 20-mm convergence test, and it shows that the IMA method can maintain the accuracy at 78% when the reserved ratio is as low as 3% in NATM tunnel, which is significantly better than the random sampling method and the curvature sampling method. The results also indicate that proposed deformation analysis method performs well even for rough linings. The validation of the proposed method is carried out by comparing the 3D laser scanning and total station measurement of the Nanshan Tunnel. The measurement using the proposed technology has a good agreement with that obtained by using traditional total station monitoring method. In addition, the full-space deformation field of tunnel lining can be obtained for more extensive discussion on the development of deformation.

Abstract:Under the combined impacts of the operation time, design concept, and construction technology, extensive damage has occurred in tunnels built in China during the early stages of rapid development. Therefore, relevant research on tunnel damage is of urgent importance. This study takes the Liupanshan Highway Tunnel on G312 in Guyuan City as a case study, and uses field investigations, radar scans, and other methods to investigate the occurrence of a series of defects in the tunnel, including lining splitting, water leakage, and tunnel bottom damage, to analyze the damage characteristics and occurrence mechanism in detail based on both external causes and internal causes. From the results, by combing relevant materials both in China and abroad with the engineering characteristics, a comprehensive management method for reinforcing and strengthening damaged tunnels with a reinforced concrete umbrella arch is proposed. At the same time, considering the degradation in the bearing capacity of the existing lining structure and utilization degree of the bearing capacity of newly increased reinforced concrete umbrella arch, this study performs a theoretical analysis of the calculation for the safety factor of the reinforced damaged tunnel. The calculation results show that the reinforced Liupanshan Tunnel is in a secure state, which can provide references for similar projects in the future.

Problems and Countermeasures in Tunneling by Open TBM in Chongqing Rail Transit Works

Abstract:Open TBMs are used in the construction of Wulidian Station-Shanyanggou Reservoir Station section of the first phase of No. 6 line of Chongqing rail transit project,which is the first time in China that open TBMs have been used in the construction of rail transit works. The engineering practice of the tunneling of the trial section by open TBMs shows that the tunneling has such problems as the primary support being too strong,the secondary lining being difficult to be installed,and the construction schedule being difficult to be controlled. Countermeasures,including optimizing the design of the primary support based on"dynamic design and dynamic construction"concept,adopting"synchronous ling"and optimizing open TBM tunneling plan,are proposed. In the end,the open TBMs have achieved successful driving in the trial section,which verifies the feasibility of open TBMs in the construction of underground tunnels of Chongqing rail transit works.

Abstract:Due to limited land resources, there are more and more tunnel projects around the world, such as subways, mountain tunnels, undersea tunnels and high-speed railway tunnels. Being independent of their purpose, such underground construction environment is sinister and complex. With the long-time use of tunnels, it is necessary to detect and diagnose quality defects to avoid accidents, such as geological environment, lining cavity, concrete strength, lining thickness, seepage water, section deformation, crack and so on. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of geological exploration before the completion of tunnels, the analysis and control of quality defects during the structure construction as well as the continuous monitoring and diagnosis of tunnel faults after establishment. Finally, challenges and future tunnel inspection directions are discussed.

Abstract:Construction technique considering the optimal sequence of pilot-tunnel excavation was investigated in order to ensure the safety of construction process of long-span shallow-buried tunnel. Firstly, optimal comparisons of the effect of different sequence of pilot-tunnel excavation on the ground settlement were implemented by the numerical analysis. Secondly, an optimal construction method was determined and applied to the construction of a practical tunnel. Some key issues and procedure of the selected construction method were described in detail. Finally, the numerical modeling and calculation of the tunnel construction process were conducted, and the effectiveness of these simulations was demonstrated by using the measured data of the practical tunnel.

Abstract:Taking Shanyang tunnel of Dali to Ruili (DaRui) railway as background, the construction technology of micro bench cut method for weak rock tunnel with high in-situ stress is established by combining the full-fgenius tunnelling method and bench cut method. For weak rock tunnel with large deformation, corresponding construction control points and technical characteristics are discussed. The following results are achieved. (1) The horizontal convergence deformation of Shanyang tunnel is larger than that of the subsidence displacement of the vault. Feet-lock bolt, reinforced grouting of arch foot surrounding rock, and expand support measures for arch foot are equipped to increase the stability and resistance of the supporting steel frame. (2) The narrow working surface of a single-line tunnel can be effectively utilized and the rapid construction of tunnel is also realized. (3) The construction technology can realize the rapid closure of the initial support into a ring, ensure the tunnel safety of the IV and V grade surrounding rock, reduce the construction cost, and improve the construction efficiency. The construction methods and techniques proposed in the article can provide reference for similar projects.

Abstract:Based on the construction mechanics theory of underground engineering,the numerical model was formulated for simulating the CRD dynamic construction process of Xiamen sub-sea tunnel in terrestrial shallow section.The developing process of displacement was analyzed with excavation of various parts of the tunnel.The ground surface settlement of large-span shallow tunnel was analyzed by the Peck prediction method and numerical simulation method,and the numerical simulation results gave the dynamic process of ground surface settlement with the construction.The evaluation of lining security could be made by the mechanics analysis of primary support.With excavation,the dynamic process of stressed state and plastic zone were analyzed,providing theoretical foundation for evaluation of surrounding rocks stability.Through the analysis on dynamic construction of sub-sea large-span shallow tunnel,the mechanical response of surrounding rocks and supporting system were understood during construction process,and the present theory provided an scientific method for the dynamic design and construction of tunnel.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a case study of super-large cross-section tunnel in Zhuhai, China. The excavation section of Gongbei tunnel is 336.8 m<sup>2</sup>. The construction method of freezing pipe roof and five-bench fourteen-step excavation is expected to be adopted, which is the first case in the world. The tunnel construction risk is great because the stratum which the tunnel passes through is mainly silt and the construction procedure is complex. In addition, the load-transfer mechanisms in tunnelling construction are not clear. In this paper, the field test method and numerical simulation were utilized to study the development and distribution of ground deformation and support deformation during the construction of Gongbei tunnel, and the mechanical responses of tunnel support structure in the tunnelling construction were investigated. The results showed that the ground deformation was uplifted with the excavation of the tunnel due to the freezing and grouting of the surrounding rock. The vault deformation during the excavation process was fluctuating due to Gongbei tunnel was excavated in several steps, which was generally in the state of settlement first and then heave. The peripheral convergence around the tunnel increased first and then tended to be stable with the excavation progress. The removal of temporary support had a slight impact on the convergence around the step C. Due to the existence of the pipe roof and freezing soil, the tunnel supporting stress was small, which ensure the safety of the tunnel structure. Stress results of steel frame of initial support showed that the vault and invert bent to the inside of the tunnel, and the side wall bent to the outside of the tunnel. The bending moment of the secondary lining was larger than that of the initial support due to the ring forming of the secondary lining separately, and the secondary lining might be damaged locally. After the temporary support was removed, the overall stress of the initial support and secondary lining increased slightly. The stress concentration of the secondary lining was relieved after thawing. The interface stress between secondary lining and tertiary lining was large. This case study might severe as a practical reference for similar tunnelling constructions.</p>
