Abstract:Deep excavation in Xiaosan of Hangzhou was located in deep silty sand layer.The soil-nailing wall was the main type of pit-protection system;meanwhile,some types of composite soil-nailing support were adopted according to the depth and the circumstances of the excavation.The design idea and the characteristics of deep excavation engineering were introduced.The problem of soil-nailing support technology for deep excavation located in deep silty sand layer was analyzed and summarized to provide reference to the similar projects.

Abstract:Soil nailing is a widely used means for slope stabilization in the last two decades. The traditional limit equilibrium method in the design of soil-nailed systems can not give the maximum depth Hu for soil-nailed retaining structure and excavation depth Dhi of each step. Based on energy method and power equilibrium equation,the formula of limit excavation depth of soil-nailed retaining structure is presented,and a new safety factor ki of each step and Dhi of each step are also established. Pseudo cohesion DC is obtained by taking the effect of reinforcement and restriction soil nail as the increasing soil cohesion. The main influence factors of soils and soil nails and the variation rules of limit excavation are analyzed. All these can be used for references to the design of soil-nailed retaining structures.

Abstract:In soft soil foundation, the strength of soft soils is low and the quality of the construction of the conventional soil-nailing is hard to be controlled. To solve these problems, new slurry pressure type soil nailing technology is developed, and the soil-nailing ultimate resistance is calculated by carrying out the field pullout tests. In addition, the finite element software is adopted to establish the three finite element analysis model for slurry pocket pressure type soil nailing. The transfer law of load is studied, and the effects of the soil conditions and the dimensions of the grouting are analyzed.

Abstract:Soil-nail wall support was employed in the deep foundation works of Olympic Sports Center Station of Nanjing Metro Project. Analysis on the monitoring result of the soil-nail wall construction demonstrates that this form of support creates good construction environment and fast construction speed. However, when it is used in soft soil, particular attention should be paid to "time-space effect" and foundation pit will have big slope displacement and boundary settlement.

Abstract:Aiming at the uncertainty and variation of geo-material parameters in foundation pit engineering, the reliability analysis method of soil-nailing wall is discussed based on the response surface method, genetic algorithm and taboo search techniques. A modified Morgenstern-Price limit equilibrium method for analysis of the interior stability of soil-nailing wall is presented by considering the reinforcement effect of soil nails. An approximate reliability calculation method of soil-nailing wall, in which the response surface function is constructed by these sample points that are obtained from the modified Morgenstern-Price method instead of traditional FEM numerical simulation method, is established based on the response surface principle. Taking soil shearing strength parameters c and. as the random variables. a global optimal algorithm. adaptive taboo search genetic algorithm (ATSGA) is presented for soil-nailing wall reliability, which can effectively locate the critical slip surface associated with the minimum reliability index. An example is given; and the calculation results computed by proposed method show that if taking the minimum reliability index and the minimum safety factor as the target function respectively, the two critical slip surfaces are significantly different.

Abstract:The main geology matters of the foundation were the silt plastic state and miscellaneous fill with the poor stability ability and restrictions on construction site conditions and economic considerations.The final choice of support scheme is: I section is supported by the top section slope-DJM-soil anchor;Ⅱ,Ⅲ are supported by shotcrete-bolt support.The later deformation monitoring data show that the supporting schemes are successful.

A New Bracing Structure: Channel-Steel-Pile Composite Soil Nailing

Abstract:A new bracing structure, channel-steel-pile composite soil nailing (CCSN), has been developed by Cai Chang-Bin in Wenzhou, southeast of China, which can be used in soft clay foundation. The technic and composing of CCSN are introduced in this paper. Investigation shows that CCSN has some advantages as following: (1) CCSN can be used in soft clay foundation. (2) It is easy to observe the soil displacement in CCSN. (3) CCSN is easy to construct. (4) Cost of CCSN is not expensive, since channel-steel can be reused. (5) Compared with soil nailing, the construction speed of CCSN is faster for the less quantity. (6) Seepage can be prevented in CCSN. (7) CCSN is suitable for complex geometry shape of foundation. It has been proved by many engineering cases that CCSN is a sort of safe and economical bracing construction. Widely use of CCSN can be expected.

Abstract:In this paper, based on a similar theory, the model test of shotcrete surface support is carried out concerning the traditional soil nail wall. By testing a slope with a vertical excavation depth of 1 m and a slope ratio of 1:0.4, the damage mechanism of soil nail wall and unsupported slope during excavation and loading is analyzed and compared. The test results show that: compared with the unsupported slope, the soil nail wall can limit the horizontal displacement of the slope, enhance the ability of internal stress adjustment, and effectively strengthen the lower support capacity of the pit; the axial force of the soil nail develops gradually from the two ends of the soil nail to the middle, and its strength increases with the increase of excavation depth and load; the damage of the soil nail wall is in the form of gradual plastic damage, and its slip cracking surface is closer to the end of the soil nail and develops deeper and farther than the unsupported slope; and the soil nail wall has greater bearing capacity than the unsupported slope and is more widely used in the project.

Abstract:The composite support form for shallow excavation of depth H=7 m has been suggested and widely used in recent years. Basing on the engineering practice, we adopt the elastoplastic model and use plane finite element method to analyze the effect of supporting parameters on the deformation behavior of excavation with composite supporting. The general principle of deformation behavior of different support methods is obtained. When the soil nails and piles are adopted simultaneous as composite support system, they will notably enhance the effect of the support; and the deformation behavior is different from that using soil nail merely, and the maximal displacement of the supporting system will move downwards closely to the bottom of foundation pit. And when the appropriate angle of the slop is used the composite support form will control the displacement of the side of foundation pit more effectively.

Abstract:It is common to have a foundation pit accident, when failing to deal with the effect of confined water. In order to avoid such accidents, the Jiangnan launching shaft of Qingchun Road River-Crossing Tunnel in Hangzhou was investigated. According to the analysis of on-site monitoring data of wall deflection, settlement, and strut load, some conclusion can be drawn. Firstly, the wall deflection is closely related to the plane size of the foundation pit, and through strengthening the stiffness of the central support, the wall deflection can be greatly controlled. Secondly, the maximum settlement point is 0.5 times depth of the excavation away from retaining wall. Finally, load in the first level strut gradually decreased during the construction, and even can turn to be tensile force.

Abstract:The pile foundation cutting and underpinning process during shield tunnelling significantly impacts the stability of bridge substructures. In this paper, the shield tunnel area from Hongguzhong Avenue Station to Yangming Park Station of Nanchang Metro Line 2 was taken as the research subject, which crosses the pile foundation underpinning project of the south approach section of Bayi Bridge. Through numerical simulation and on-site monitoring analysis, the influence of the active underpinning process of shield tunnelling pile foundation on the deformation of bridge substructure was studied. First, through analyzing on-site conditions and comparing technical solutions, an active gantry bridge pile foundation underpinning technology was proposed, and the specific construction steps were determined. On this basis, for the C15 pile foundation with the most complex working conditions, ABAQUS software was applied to simulate the jack-up, unloading and pile-cutting process during the pile foundation underpinning construction, and the displacement development of the bridge pier, underpinning beam and new pile during the whole construction process were analyzed. Finally, through on-site monitoring data analysis, the technology’s feasibility and safety were further verified. At the same time, according to the analysis of the monitoring results of the bridge piers, underpinning beams and new piles, the results from the finite element software were nearly the same as the trend shown by the monitoring results, and the displacement of the main structures of the lower part of the bridge was small and within the control range. The above research work verified the applicability of the active gantry type bridge pile foundation underpinning technology in the pile foundation underpinning condition of the single-column single-pile bridge in the narrow space curved bridge section, and is worthy of further promotion and application.

Abstract:The glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) soil nail is a newly developed structural element for slope stabilization and has the advantages of light dead weight,high strength and high resistance to corrosion,etc.In this paper,based on the basic characteristics of GFRP soil nail,the current research progress on the supporting mechanism of GFRP soil nail for slope was summarized.The merits and demerits of conventional steel soil nail and GFRP soil nail were compared and the mechanical transfer mechanism on the interface between the GFRP soil nail and soil mass was analyzed.The suggestions for further research were briefly presented.

Due to such complexity, it is often difficult to solve the problems by analysis. FEM analysis provides a solution for the optimal design and safety stability of soil nailing support structure. Abstract:The behavior of a nailed retaining wall was analyzed through a case by using 2D-FEM analysis.The retaining walls were used for excavation work of a building foundation.In numerical analysis,deep mixed walls and soft soils were represented by Mohr-Coulomb materials and the nails were modeled by bar elements.The calculated results were compared with the field measured values.The results show that the numerical analysis can simulate field performance fairly well.The distribution tension force in nail and effective factors such as length,stiffness,spacing of nails,and stiffness of mixed walls were discussed.The results show that the parameters of nails have great influence on the lateral displacements of the nailed walls.

Abstract:Soil–nailing technology is widely applied in practice for reinforcing slopes. A series of centrifuge model tests was conducted on slopes reinforced with a soil nail wall under three types of loading conditions. The behavior and mechanism of failure process of the reinforced slopes were studied using image-based observation and displacement measurements for the slope, nails, and cement layer. The nailing significantly increased the stability level and restricted the tension cracks of the slopes. Increasing the nail length improved the stability of the reinforced slopes with deeper slip surfaces. The reinforced slope exhibited a significant failure process, in which slope slippage failure and cement layer fracture occurred in conjunction with a coupling effect. The deformation localization was induced by the loading within the slope and ultimately developed into a slip surface. The nailing reinforced the slope by significantly delaying the occurrence of the deformation localization within the slope. The failure of nails was recognized as a combination of pull-out failure and bend deformation. The loading conditions were shown to have a significant effect on slope deformation and nail deflection, and they consequently influenced the failure behavior and its formation sequence.

Abstract:This paper deals with stability of the Sangzhouling Tunnel construction. First, FEM is used to analyze the stability of the shallow tunnel section, and soil nails are used to improve the upper soils. Second, monitoring work is done deliberately. The collapse of local face is predictsed successfully. The monitoring results show the influence of the aguifers in the loose surrounding rock on the stability.

Abstract:Large deformation and support failure of a tunnel with poor lithology, which significantly threaten the stability of the tunnel, have always been major difficulties in underground engineering construction. This paper describes a case study of the failure mechanisms and support design for tailrace tunnels that cross a wide fracture zone in the Wuyue pumped storage power station in Henan Province, China. Geological investigation and mechanical experiments, including large-scale triaxial tests, X-ray diffraction, and free swell tests, were performed to reveal the failure mechanism of the tailrace tunnel. It was observed that the surrounding rock of the tunnel is a completely weathered granite that is characterized by extremely poor rock mass quality, severe deformation, and significant expansibility. Based on the failure mechanism and combined with the concept of "inner and outer load-bearing structures", a multilevel support system with "long anchor bolts + anchor bolts + rigid arch" as a core is proposed with consideration of the rotation of the principal stress axis. Numerical simulation was adopted to verify the rationality of the proposed support system compared with other support conditions, i.e. no support and uniform support. The results indicate that the proposed support system effectively improves the principal stress state of a tunnel with poor lithology and controls the large deformation of the surrounding rock, especially in the floor and inclined sidewall. Additionally, three successful application cases were introduced to promote the utilization of the proposed support, and possible improvements in enhancing engineering applications were evaluated. The support methodology presented in this paper can support the design of other engineering projects in complex geological environments.
