Abstract:Slurry shield has been widely used in construction of cross-river tunnels.One big challenge is how to traverse the embankment without impacting its regular service and safety.Based on the field settlement monitoring data in construction of Hangzhou Qingchun Road cross-river tunnel,ground settlements induced by shield tunneling under greenfield and the embankment are compared.The results show that the settlements of the embankment are larger,for which for the shielding disturbance to the surrounding soils,the complexity of the embankment structure,the vehicle travelling on the embankment and sustained rainfall are accounted.Peck equation's applicability to predict the ground settlements due to shield tunneling in Hangzhou is evaluated,and the values of the ground trough-width parameter and the volume loss in this project are suggested.By combining the successful experience of crossing the embankment in this tunnel,some practical and effective measures are suggested for slurry shield to traverse the embankment.These results will provide a scientific reference for the design and construction of similar shield tunnels in practice.

Abstract:The prediction of rock structure in front of face during tunneling using geophysical methods has the advantage of high speed and accuracy. Using this method, we are accurately informed the rock structure in front of the face of tunneling and we may provide information for further construction. The information is very important in arranging the tunneling method and reducing the risk of work. Abstract:During the tunnel construction, the soil loss and construction methods cause the soil deformation around the tunnel. The existed constructions and pipes are terribly affected by soil deformation. Hence, the significant studying on the soil displacement is implemented during tunneling construction. On the background of Hangzhou Metro Linel, the in-site monitoring is implemented to find the discipline of the soil deformation development. The numerical method is applied to simulate the tunneling process, and the results meet the discipline of monitoring data. The conclusions are consulted for soil deformation prediction during the tunnel construction.

Abstract:Visualized supervision and control system for shield tunnel boring machine was developed, according to the request of the upper workstation. The hardware design and software structure were introduced. Specially, logical judgment of working state and static and dynamic prediction model of earth surface level variation were given and analyzed. The solutions to avoid land surface sedimentation accruing were brought forward: ensuring the working state of the programs precisely at any time according to running state of the tunneling machine with using logical judgment formula; forecasting the quantities of the surface sedimentation comparatively exactly by evaluating on-line and visualized supervision means. It is testified that the system can supervise multi-subject, can forecast exactly, as well as can realize visualized evaluation and prediction on line.

Abstract:The technique of geological prediction, based on which geological conditions can be known in advance to improve construction progress, is widely adopted during tunnel excavation. Because of the problems associated with current, single-method prediction techniques, a comprehensive technique combining engineering geophysical exploration with engineering geology is proposed in this study. This method could make excavation more economical and safer by improving the accuracy of such predictions. It uses engineering geophysical exploration measures such as tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) to detect the geological conditions ahead, and measures the investigation and deduces the precise results either in the tunnel or on the surface. Compared with single-method techniques, its advantages include high resolution, speed, ease of use, and low cost. By comparing the application of the various techniques and a successful example of application of technique TSP203 with the measures of investigation and deduction in engineering geology, we show the superiority of the proposed comprehensive method and its favorable prospects. This contribution also provides a new concept for the development of tunnel geological prediction techniques.
Land-surface subsidence induced by slurry shield tunneling-assessment and modification of traditional calculation methods

Abstract:The methods for calculating the land-surface subsidence induced by shield tunneling were reviewed,and then,their applicability for the prediction of ground surface settlement during the construction of the Qingchun Road river-crossing tunnel in Hangzhou was assessed. Based on the field observations,some calculation methods were appropriately modified for better predictions. Some calculation methods,such as the Peck method,the modified Loganathan method,the Chi method,the Celestino method and the Vorster method,have good accuracy in fitting the transverse ground surface settlements. However,the Sagaseta method,the Verruijt&Booker method,the Loganathan&Poulos method,the Loganathan method and the Park method may lead to a wider settlement trough compared to the field observations. When the ground loss is substantial,the longitudinal ground surface settlement curves fitted by the Yoshikoshi method and the modified Sagaseta method with the offset considered can be in good agreement with the measured ones,but when the ground loss is small and the influence of shield driving parameters on the ground surface movements is significant,the fitting accuracy using the two methods may not be good.

Abstract:The complicated geological conditions and geological hazards are challenging problems during tunnel construction, which will cause great losses of life and property. Therefore, reliable prediction of geological defective features, such as faults, karst caves and groundwater, has important practical significances and theoretical values. In this paper, we presented the criteria for detecting typical geological anomalies using the tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) method. The ground penetrating radar (GPR) signal response to water-bearing structures was used for theoretical derivations. And the 3D tomography of the transient electromagnetic method (TEM) was used to develop an equivalent conductance method. Based on the improvement of a single prediction technique, we developed a technical system for reliable prediction of geological defective features by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of all prediction methods. The procedure of the application of this system was introduced in detail. For prediction, the selection of prediction methods is an important and challenging work. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was developed for prediction optimization. We applied the newly developed prediction system to several important projects in China, including Hurongxi highway, Jinping II hydropower station, and Kiaochow Bay subsea tunnel. The case studies show that the geological defective features can be successfully detected with good precision and efficiency, and the prediction system is proved to be an effective means to minimize the risks of geological hazards during tunnel construction.

Abstract:For the Da-puling tunnel of Puqing Expressway in Guangxi, the advanced geological prediction is carried out by combining TSP long-distance forecast method with short distance geological radar method. This paper describes the principle of seismic wave propagation in elastic medium, as well as the key points of data processing and analysis, some requirements that should be paid attention to the field test and scientific way of image interpretation put forward to improve the accuracy of prediction; When TSP is deployed, it should be sharp angle with potential joint surface. P-wave reacts surrounding rock properties, the shear wave is closely related to the transverse skeleton of medium. In data interpretation, it is necessary to focus on the analysis of the characteristics of P-wave and S-wave, weakening Poisson’s ratio and Young’s modulus. TSP and GPR can achieve the mutual complement and improve the detection accuracy.

Abstract:Along with the need for western economic development, the number of long tunnel projects which go through mountains is constantly on the rise. In the process of construction, various disaster-causing structures are frequently exposed, which leads to many geological disasters. The traditional idea is that the reverse fault is not easily developed for an underground river, which means that the tunnel elevation design is not considered adequately. When some tunnels cross the bottom of the river, the fractures near the fault between the underground river and the excavation space may be activated and then evolve into channels, causing serious water inrush accidents during construction and operation processes. Taking the Qiyueshan Tunnel site as an example, on the premise of the anatomy of the control mechanism of the reverse fault on the development of the underground river, based on the multiperiod typical structural traces of the tunnel and surface outcrop, it was found that stratifications, dip joints, transverse joints, and tension joints of good aperture grade are important control factors. The cut block easily loses its stability and provides space for karst development, while intermittent uplifting of regional structures provides hydrodynamic conditions for the development of the underground river, causing the hydraulic gradient to be inconsistent in the overall underground river. Finally, the rainwater dynamic monitoring and tracer connectivity are data that can be fully utilized to demonstrate that a reverse fracture can control the development of the underground river. The authors further considered the effect of the vertical zoning of the fault structure and the excavation disturbance, and, drawing on the experience of the relative location of the same site in the same field, put forward the suggestion that the construction of the follow-up tunnel in the study area should be slightly higher than the elevation of the underground river. The research results can provide useful reference for similar engineering problems in the future.

Abstract:In the tunnel construction, due to the limitation of the survey and design and the complex dynamics of tunnel surrounding rock geological conditions, so it is difficult for complex geology with the microscopic accurate grasp, often which caused by geological exploration data do not tally with the actual situation, often encountered in karst water inrush, large deformation in weak rock, cave-in subsidence, geological hazards, such as gas outburst, rock burst cause person casualties, delays, in order to minimize geological disaster influence degree, advanced geological prediction before construction is very necessary. Using regression analysis, based on engineering vault subsidence and horizontal convergence has carried on the regression analysis, research results can be reference for related engineering design and construction. Detailed introduces the principle, methods and outstanding characteristic of tunnel reflection tomography advanced prediction system, and take Jianfengling mountain tunnel of Darui line railway as an example, the prediction results are analyzed in detailed processing, and on-site validation, finally points out the problem for further study the technology.
Research and application of a comprehensive forecasting system for tunnels in water-bearing fault fracture zones: a case study

Abstract:In the process of tunnel construction, there is a high probability of encountering fault fracture zones. Tunnel deformation, water-inrush, and mud-inrush accidents easily occur in these sections. There is an urgent need for tunnel engineering to accurately predict the geological characteristics and spatial locations of water-bearing faults in front of tunnels. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various prediction technologies, a comprehensive water-bearing fault forecasting system is proposed, and the application process of this system is introduced in-depth for the Bifeng Temple high-speed railway tunnel project. First, the geological and hydrological conditions of the Bifeng Temple high-speed tunnel are analysed, and the orientations of the fault fracture zone and dense joint zone in the tunnel site area are determined. Then, tunnel seismic prediction (TSP) is applied to detect the spatial relationship and geological characteristics between the water-bearing faults and tunnel. To improve the forecasting accuracy, ground penetrating radar (GPR) is applied synthetically when approaching the fault. According to the comprehensive physical forecast results, the target area is verified by fixed-point advancing holes. The forecast results are consistent. Finally, the curtain-grouting method and three-step temporary inverted arch method are used to control the water-rich fault zone, and water inrush is successfully prevented. The monitoring and measurement results of the rock surrounding the tunnel in the fault zone verify the reliability of the control measures. This comprehensive forecasting system has been successfully put into practise in the water-bearing fault tunnel in Fujian, and it can play a guiding role in similar projects.

Abstract:Tunnel boring machines (TBM) have gained extensive utilization in tunnel construction. Ensuring TBM construction safety hinges upon a precise understanding of adverse geological conditions. To predict geological conditions within the tunnel of the Hangzhou Second Water Diversion Project (Jiangnan Line), a geological analysis was conducted to estimate the potential adverse geological conditions ahead. To obtain the detailed distribution of fractured zones, we devised a tunnel-and-surface integrated seismic detection methodology. This approach integrates surface-wave detection, seismic imaging methods, Tunnel-Seismic-While-Drilling method (TSWD), and seismic ahead-prospecting methods. The surface-wave detection and seismic imaging method were initially employed to achieve a comprehensive assessment of adverse geology on a large scale. Subsequently the TSWD method and seismic ahead-prospecting method were applied within tunnel to get more accurate geological information. The integrated interpretation successfully identified five fractured zones, which were further validated through the analysis of TBM drilling parameters and measurements of uniaxial compressive strength. Compared to the preliminary investigation, the integrated detection method provided a more detailed insight into adverse geological conditions, thus enhancing the safety and efficiency of TBM drilling and tunnel construction. This study underscores the significance of accurate geological analysis for ensuring the success of TBM projects in challenging terrains.

Abstract:Cangling tunnel in Taizhou?Jinyun highway,with a depth about 768 m and with a length about 7.6 km,will be the deepest and longest tunnel in Zhejiang Province after construction. Rockburst is a serious problem during the tunnel excavation. For the prediction of rockburst,physico-mechanical properties of the rock masses were tested in the laboratory;and the in-situ stress state in the engineering area was measured and analyzed. Then, the rock masses along the tunnel were classified on the basis of local geological investigation. A mechanical model was developed to express the actual conditions of the engineering area according to properties of the rock masses, focal mechanism solutions,and in-situ stress state. The in-situ stress field of the engineering area was regressed by 3D finite element method (FEM) by using in-situ measured stress. The calculated results were applied to numerical analysis of the stress distribution in rock masses around the tunnel. Finally,the probability and intensity of rockburst along tunnel were predicted according to four different rockburst prediction models developed by predecessors on the basis of calculated stress distribution around the tunnel and uniaxial compressive strength of the rock masses.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urban underground traffic, the study of soil deformation induced by subway tunnel construction and its settlement prediction are gradually of general concern in engineering circles. The law of soil displacement caused by shield tunnel construction of adjacent buildings is analyzed in this paper. The author holds that ground surface settlement based on the Gauss curve or Peck formula induced by tunnel excavation of adjacent buildings is not reasonable. Integrating existing research accomplishments, the paper proposed that surface settlement presents cork distribution curve characters, skewed distribution curve characteristics and normal distribution curve characteristics when the tunnel is respectively under buildings, within the scope of the disturbance and outside the scope of the disturbance. Calculation formulas and parameters on cork distribution curve and skewed distribution curve were put forward. The numerical simulation, experimental comparison and model test analysis show that it is reasonable for surface settlement to present cork distribution curve characters, skewed distribution curve characteristics and normal distribution curve characteristics within a certain range. The research findings can be used to make effective prediction of ground surface settlement caused by tunnel construction of adjacent buildings, and to provide theoretical guidance for the design and shield tunnelling.

Abstract:Deep excavations have significant influence on existing metro tunnels. Currently, there is still a lack of practical and simple assessment approaches for predicting this influence. In this paper, a new analytical method is developed that uses a continuous Euler-Bernoulli beam to simulate shield tunnel behavior due to overlying basement excavation. Firstly, the excavation-induced greenfield displacement at the tunnel axis is obtained with the application of Mindlin's solution. Secondly, the longitudinal response of the tunnel due to the ground movement induced by excavation is computed using a finite difference method. The effectiveness and applica-bility of the proposed method are validated by three high-quality case histories, including field measurement, FEM method, and semi-analytical method. Different from previous studies, the tunnel-soil interaction behavior is studied based on the displacement coupling condition in the proposed method, capable of accurately considering tunnel-soil interaction behavior. Subsequently, with the verified proposed analytical solution, further parametric studies are performed to investigate the spatial factors affecting tunnel behavior including tunnel buried depth, excavation-tunnel relative distance, excavation geometry, skew angle between tunnel axis, short side of the excavation, and excavation depth, yielding abundant artificial data. Then, a semi-empirical formula considering spatial effect is established for directly predicting the maximum vertical displacement of the tunnel with adequate engineering accuracy and applicability. The proposed analytical method can be applied to predict the potential risk of existing tunnel due to nearby excavation.

Abstract:Tunnel construction is strongly affected by the surrounding geological structure and the tunnel's internal stress.In order to ensure the progress and quality of tunnel construction,tunnel construction monitoring is particularly important.An on-site monitoring method of Xintangfang Tunnel in Chengdu to Chongqing High-speed Railway was introduced in this paper.Based on the monitoring data,the basic rule of rock deformation was found by regression analysis,and reasonable time for the second-time rock retaining was determined.The regression model used in this paper can accurately forecast the conclusion of deformation in a week.

The so-called tunnel information construction is mainly based on advanced geological prediction, monitoring and measurement data and other information, combined with the actual geological description in the excavation process, timely decision-making on the site, rapid change of construction methods, or adjustment of support structure, in order to adapt to changes in geological conditions, so as to achieve dynamic feedback construction. Because of the advantages of tunnel information construction in modern tunnel construction, and there are many successful cases at home and abroad, it is necessary to have a systematic understanding of it. Based on the above background, the research status and successful cases of tunnel informatization construction at home and abroad are summarized. Abstract:Abstract Tunnel seismic prediction(TSP) and ground penetrating radar(GPR) are used in the advance geological prediction of a limestone tunnel. The working principle of two geophysical methods is briefly described. The additional detection work of GPR is carried out in the abnormal area of TSP prediction. The predicted dissolution distribution area of the two methods is relatively consistent. The actual excavation results of the tunnel verify the reliability of the geophysical prediction method. The results show that the velocity of TSP P-wave or S-wave corresponding to the dissolution zone is relatively low, which corresponds to the electromagnetic anomaly with strong amplitude of GPR with hyperbolic event.

Abstract:When a tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavates in poor geological conditions like fracture zones, soft rock with high ground stress, hard rock with high ground stress, and water inrush ground, severe problems such as surrounding rock collapse, convergence, rock burst and water and mud outburst are usually encountered. These problems existed in the Tianshan Shengli Tunnel project in Xinjiang, China. Several methods and techniques were adopted to reduce construction risks and improve construction efficiency. The seismic wave reflection long-distance geological forecasting method was employed to forecast and predict these adverse geological conditions. The pre-reinforcement construction method was employed on the surrounding broken rocks in front of the tunnel face to lower the risks of tunnel collapse and machine jamming. A combined steel arch was applied to prevent tunnel arch collapse. An artificial cap method was applied to prevent the jamming caused by high-ground stress soft rock. Measures such as spraying water on the tunnel face and drilling stress holes were employed to prevent rock bursts caused by high-ground stress in hard rock. Implementing the advanced pipe shed method during water influx, sudden mud, and other working conditions reduced the risk of groundwater damage to equipment and lowered risks to personnel safety. The successful application of these techniques can provide a reference for TBM tunnel construction in similar ground conditions.
