Abstract:To solve the construction ventilation problem of super long (length greater than 10000 m) tunnel passing through discrete lenticular gas bag tunnel under complex working conditions in carbonaceous shale stratum, relying on the construction of Banzhulin tunnel of the new Xuyong-Bijie Railway (Sichuan-Yunnan). Using the finite element analysis software, the flow field distribution of the tunnel return air flow in the case of simultaneous excavation of multiple working faces is simulated, and the formation position and influence range of the vortex area which is easy to form gas accumulation are analyzed. On this basis, the technical team developed the PLC uninterruptible self starting ventilation power supply control program. By comparing the changes in the time required for ventilation power supply failure before and after the adoption of this technology, and the comparison of the gas concentration in the return air flow within a relatively short time of the failure, it is proved that this technology reduces the fault response time to 15.74% of the original time, and can well avoid gas accumulation within the failure time, It provides some reference for similar engineering construction.

Abstract:Highway tunnel ventilation systems are associated with high civil construction and operation costs, as well as large differences in the total required air volume for uphill and downhill tunnels. Thus, in the current study, a complementary ventilation system is applied to the shaft segmented longitudinal ventilation mode to form the mixed ventilation mode of the complementary combined ventilation shaft. The mixed ventilation formula is derived based on the tunnel ventilation theory. Combined with the design process of tunnel ventilation, the design process from the location of the ventilation shaft, design air volume, the air interchange channel location, the air exchange ratio of air interchange channel to pollutant concentration is determined, and the mixed ventilation mode conditions are analyzed. Moreover, an engineering example is employed to analyze the mixed ventilation, and to compare the traffic wind utilization rate, operation energy consumption and the civil construction scale between conventional segmented longitudinal ventilation and mixed ventilation. The results reveal that compared with the conventional segmented longitudinal ventilation mode, the mixed ventilation mode effectively improves the utilization rate of traffic wind, reduces the adverse effect of surplus traffic wind pressure on tunnel ventilation and minimizes mechanical power usage. In terms of operating energy consumption, taking a vehicle speed of 60 km/h as an example, the mixed ventilation method fully utilizes the traffic wind pressure in the tunnel. Although it is necessary to turn on the jet fan in the tunnel to increase the power, the energy consumption of the axial flow fan is reduced by 31.9 %, and the total power is reduced by 9.5 %, greatly lowering the energy consumption of the tunnel operation. Despite the addition of the traverse ventilation channels by the mixed ventilation method, reductions are observed in the construction of a ventilation shaft, the connecting channels, the overall ventilation civil engineering volume, and the initial civil construction investment cost. Moreover, the mixed ventilation method includes a smoke exhaust channel, thus solving the smoke exhaust problem of tunnel fires.

Abstract:During the excavation process of underground caverns, the rational selection of the ventilation scheme is very important for the safety and health of construction workers. The flood discharge tunnel groups at the Changheba Hydropower Station are selected as a case to study the design of ventilation schemes in inclined tunnel groups; these groups are characterized by a gradient of approximately 10% and a complex intersecting relationship among the tunnels. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is used to simulate the fluid dynamics in tunnel groups when different ventilation schemes are employed. Four ventilation schemes with the same duct at different positions along the transverse section are formulated, and the scheme approaching the right side with most of the construction adits is adopted in engineering after a comparative analysis, as it offers a well-distributed velocity field and sufficient security distance. The study reveals that flow vortices appear in the tunnels with a long axis length ranging from 5m to 20m; the observation that the flow velocity on the transverse sections is away from the heading face indicates that a low-velocity area is always present in the vicinity of an air duct, and the security distance on the upstream side is 60% shorter than on the downstream side with the same air-blower when the tunnels have a 10% gradient. In addition, when the excavation distance rises 200m, the ventilation condition in the tunnels, especially in the areas around tunnel intersections, is greatly improved by the completion of pilot tunnels and shafts in advance.

Abstract:Limited by multiple factors, such as land use planning, landscape coordination and environmental standards, the ventilation conditions of the urban highway tunnels are insufficient, and therefore the joint control of ventilation and purification becomes a necessary solution. In this study, the effect of number, location of decentralized purification equipment, and the tunnel ventilation rate on pollution in the tunnel are studied using one-dimensional calculation. The results show that the arrangement of purification equipment can reduce the design ventilation rate to a certain extent. When purification equipment is arranged, the maximum NO2 concentration can be reduced by up to 30.9%, and the average NO2 concentration can be reduced by up to 18.2% compared with that without purification. The purification equipment arranged in the rear section of the tunnel is conducive to reducing the concentration of pollutants at the exit, while the arrangement in the middle section of the tunnel is conducive to reducing the average concentration of pollutants in the tunnel.

Abstract:Underground utility tunnel refers to a passage built underground to accommodate two or more types of urban engineering pipelines, including water supply pipes, sewer pipes, steam, gas, electricity, fiber optics, television cables, telephone cables, etc. It allows not only comprehensive utilization and resource sharing of underground space but also an easy and safe access to these service infrastructures for regular inspections and maintenance that would otherwise require recurring street works in the case of direct burial trenches, impacting on traffic, business, and environment. The initial investment is high but can be compensated by later benefits in maintenance.

Abstract:Abstract Tunnel leakage is a common disaster in operating highway tunnel, causing many adverse effects on tunnel stability, cave facilities, traffic safety and the environment. Based on the causes and hazards of operating highway tunnel leakage, the tunnel leakage is divided into four types : construction joints leakage, lining crack leakage, fracture and cavity behind the lining leakage, concrete lining damage leakage. And the related crucial techniques and schemes were proposed. The achievements have been widely applied in Kaiyuan tunnel successfully, which offers a reference for similar tunnels.

Abstract:Forced ventilation is typically used in the construction of tunnels since it is an economical method to provide high amounts of fresh air. Air velocity and pollutant concentration near the work face are determined by the ventilation arrangement. In the study, field measurement of air velocity was performed, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models were constructed to investigate airflow near the work face and predict the gas distribution in a gas tunnel construction. The effects of the distance between the air duct exit and the work face (L 1) were evaluated by analyzing the flow field and pollutant concentration. The evaluation shows that the ventilation efficiency improves if L 1 does not exceed 15 m in a road tunnel with full-face excavation. With respect to a road tunnel with benching excavation, the effects of bench length (L 2) are analyzed, and the results of the analysis indicate that ventilation efficiency is optimal when L 2 = 5 m and L 2 = 10 m and the air-duct diameter corresponds to 1.6 m. The CFD results fit the field measurement significantly well, and the current ventilation system in the construction exhibits a relativelyhigh efficiency. The findings of the study aid practitioners in optimizing ventilation efficiency.

Abstract:In order to study the influence of ventilation parameters on the ventilation of plateau highway construction tunnels, a highway tunnel construction section in Yunnan is taken as the research background, and Fluent software is used for simulation. The results of the study show that: under the conditions of press-in ventilation, the wind speed in the center of the vortex area in the wind flow field is smaller than the wind speed in the surrounding area, and with the diffusion of the flow field, the average wind speed in the tunnel section gradually decreases, and ultimately stabilizes at the level of 0.5 m/s. After blasting, the dust mass concentration on the return side of the tunnel is higher than that on the duct side. Dust with a particle size of 30 μm or more settled rapidly within 100 m from the boring face, while dust with a particle size of 30 μm or less gradually diffused outward under the action of the wind flow. In the vicinity of the tunnel boring face, reducing the distance from the air outlet to the boring face and increasing the air velocity can improve the dust removal effect. This conclusion can provide theoretical basis and certain guidance for the evolution of dust and dust prevention in the tunnel construction process in plateau area.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of the population density, the above-ground transportation mode cannot withstand the drastic increase in travel pressure. Therefore, the construction of river-crossing tunnels has gradually become an effective way to alleviate traffic dilemmas. To further investigate the ventilation and smoke extraction systems in tunnels, four different kinds of practical river-crossing tunnels: Double-Line Tunnel, Unilateral-Line Tunnel (ULT), Single-Tube Tunnel, and the Double-Circular Tunnel (DCT) are selected for a detailed comparison. It is found that the ceiling smoke temperature and the carbon dioxide concentration produced in a fire of the ULT are the lowest. Meanwhile, the results show that the smoke temperature, visibility at a height of 2 m above the ground and smoke layer sedimentation height of the ULT are obviously lower than that in the DCT. Based on the excellent performance of the ULT, the internal exhaust vent groups (EVGs) layout is rearranged. It comes to conclusion that the fire risks caused by the number of smoke exhaust groups are completely different, and the risk ranking of the three smoke extraction schemes is: 1-EVG>3-EVGs>2-EVGs. Moreover, the consequence corresponding to the 0.43. slope segment is the most harmful, and the damage of the +1.60 degrees slope segment is minimal. All the parameters obtained by a series of simulations provide effective reference and support for fire protection design of actual tunnel construction. In particular, it plays a guiding role in the practical engineering implementation.

Abstract:Oxygen deficiency and coldness are the main challenges for highway tunnel construction in high-altitude areas such as western Sichuan plateau. The artificial oxygen supply and anti-freezing structure in the tunnel construction process has a significant impact on vocational health and the environment. Thus, the conditions of tunnels need to be carefully evaluated before construction. However, the current design code for tunnel construction contains few instructions about these aspects. This paper attempts to establish a simple evaluation method to guide the construction design by analyzing the oxygen partial pressure of trachea, the mean temperature of the coldest month, and the maximum freezing depth for tunnel projects in western Sichuan plateau. Based on the on-site meteorological monitoring at different altitudes of three typical tunnels in the western Sichuan plateau and the comparative analysis of the existing meteorological data, the corresponding relationships between the three parameters and the altitude were investigated. The thresholds by altitude for grading the tunnels are identified as 2100 m and 4200 m, respectively. The highway tunnels in the western Sichuan plateau are graded in three categories, namely, general-altitude tunnels, high-altitude tunnels, and ultra-high-altitude tunnels. The corresponding measures of oxygen supply and freezing prevention for different graded tunnels are recommended. The results would provide a basis for the design and construction of new tunnels and enhance the service life and operations safety of the tunnels in western Sichuan plateau and other similar high-altitude areas.

Abstract:By taking the typical large interval tunnels of urban rail transit in a city as example, the conditions of fire and blocking in large interval tunnels, the design of an emergency ventilation mode in different working conditions like one train running and two trains tracking are compared and analyzed. On this basis, multiple emergency ventilation modes are designed according to different working conditions, the result of emergency ventilation is verified through simulation. This research will provide a reference for the design and operation personnel to formulate more reasonable emergency ventilation modes.

Abstract:To explore the diffusion law of harmful gases near the excavation face in tunnel construction on plateaus, select the optimal ventilation parameters, and improve the ventilation efficiency, Ansys Fluent was used to set the environmental parameters according to the highland, where the tunnel is located, and simulate and curve fit the diffusion phenomenon of CO and NO based on the fluid control equations and species transport model. The effects of air velocity, ventilation time, and duct position on the diffusion law of harmful gases were analyzed, from which the optimal ventilation conditions were selected, and the ventilation effects under the optimal conditions were compared with those under the original conditions. The study shows that after the fresh airflow passes through the outlet, part of it flows out along the tunnel wall toward the cave entrance, and the other part interacts with the return air to form a vortex; when the air supply speed is 10 m/s and the distance from the duct outlet to the excavation face is 25 m, the maximum concentration of harmful gases decreases by 92-99% after 20 min of ventilation compared with that before optimization and the smoke exhaust efficiency increases by 2.5% per minute.

Abstract:A large amount of pollutants are generated during tunnel blasting construction, which seriously endangers the life and health of construction personnel. Reasonable design and resolution of ventilation issues have become the key to ensure the safety of engineering construction. This study established a ventilation simulation engineering during tunnel construction using numerical methods of computational fluid dynamics. The mechanism of the turbulent air flow generated by the restriction of air jet and wall is proved by simulating the distribution of the flow field in the tunnel under various ventilation modes. The retarding effect of vortex conducted by air flow and pollutant transport diffusion mechanism resulted in two peak distributions of pollutants. The discharge of harmful gases has both the transport effect of the main airflow and the diffusion effect of the turbulent airflow. Jet fans can effectively accelerate the dispersion of pollutants in the vortex zone. The time cost law of ventilation saving under different ventilation modes is found through comparison. On this basis, a new annular ventilation method combining longitudinal and transverse ventilation in tunnels is proposed. Not only can it greatly save ventilation time and costs, but it also provides a very friendly solution to the residual pollutants in the vicinity of the working face. The research work of this project provides important reference and guidance value for practical engineering.

There is a little study on this type of the access design now. The article systematically analyzes the main contents in the design of the urban tunnel-type expressway access. The article studies the reasonable distance of the ramp accesses in the tunnel type, puts forward the basic tactics and the methods of the ramp control, and gives the detail studying example for the design of the sign boards and ground markings at the accesses in the aspect of the traffic management facilities able to provide the better reference for the design of the access system of the urban tunnel-type expressways.

Abstract:On the basis of analysis of ventilation requirement and CO concentration distribution character in dead-end tunneling, this paper designed the ventilation equipment layout. Furthermore, a control strategy which includes normal ventilation mode and gun smoke discharging mode is established. In view of expert experience and numerical simulation results dead-end tunneling, fuzzy control is adopted to deal with this problem. Control rules principle is described in detail. Applying direct torque speed adjustment mode, an experimental system is designed and implemented. Partial experimental results show that gun smoke emission process is fast in order to increase efficiency, while normal ventilation mode is adjustable air flow for energy conservation.

Abstract:In order to study the fire properties, the variation laws of smoke's velocity field and temperature field in the municipal road tunnel with openings on roof, full-scale tests of tunnel fire are designed and conducted. The variation laws of smoke temperature and smoke spread are gained, for example, temperature of different distance from fire source varies with time, maximum temperature under the ceiling of different distance from fire source varies with longitudinal distance, and temperature at safety height varies with longitudinal distance from fire source, smoke longitudinal spread laws and sedimentation laws. The test data are analyzed with MatLab software and so on. On the base of theoretically analyzing the test data, the test phenomenon are summed up, the security of the tunnel's natural ventilation in fires is evaluated and the corresponding solutions are brought forward. Scientific gist is afforded for construction of future municipal road tunnel with natural ventilation.

Abstract:The breakage and bending of ducts result in a difficulty to cope with ventilation issues in bi-directional excavation tunnels with a long inclined shaft using a single ventilation method based on ducts. To discuss the hybrid ventilation system applied in bi-directional excavation tunnels with a long inclined shaft, this study has established a full-scale computational fluid dynamics model based on field tests, the Poly-Hexcore method, and the sliding mesh technique. The distribution of wind speed, temperature field, and CO in the tunnel are taken as indices to compare the ventilation efficiency of three ventilation systems (duct, duct-ventilation shaft, duct–ventilated shaft-axial fan). The results show that the hybrid ventilation scheme based on duct-ventilation shaft–axial fan performs the best among the three ventilation systems. Compared to the duct, the wind speed and cooling rate in the tunnel are enhanced by 7.5%–30.6% and 14.1%–17.7%, respectively, for the duct-vent shaft-axial fan condition, and the volume fractions of CO are reduced by 26.9%–73.9%. This contributes to the effective design of combined ventilation for bidirectional excavation tunnels with an inclined shaft, ultimately improving the air quality within the tunnel.

Abstract:The Tianshan Shengli Tunnel is currently the longest high-altitude highway tunnel. In order to ensure the safe operation of the tunnel, the SES software is used to investigate the wind speed laws in the tunnel, and the tunnel is divided into 16 disaster prevention sections based on the shaft and critical wind speed. The principles of disaster prevention and rescue of Tianshan Shengli Highway Tunnel are given, and the emergency treatment process of tunnel disaster prevention and rescue is given. The disaster prevention and rescue plan of Tianshan Shengli Tunnel from fire occurrence, personnel and vehicle evacuation, and fire treatment are discussed in detail.

Abstract:The paper is aimed to present two alternative schemes of fire-smoke control and evacuation for extremely long highway tunnels by taking Er Lang Shan highroad tunnel as an example through CFD simulation.For the given purpose,temperatures,pressures,as well as the movements of the smoke current in the tunnel have been analyzed under the two alternative smoke control and evacuation schemes at different fire-and heat-releasing rates(HRR).And,then,corresponding smoke control schemes are proposed on how to make the fresh air forced into the pilot tunnel and how to keep the positive pressure in it by preventing the smoke-spreading inside the tunnel so that the evacuees can escape through the pilot tunnel conveniently.And,finally,proper approaches to the control and evacuation both for the people and the vehicles are simulated based on the principle respectively.
