Abstract:Three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) is employed to model the published calibration chamber test of a closed-ended displacement pile driven in sand. To achieve large chamber-to-pile and pile-to-particle size ratios for unbiased predictions, a high-performance graphics processing unit-powered DEM code is utilised in conjunction with the axisymmetric assumption and particle refinement method. The DEM parameters are first calibrated against the drained triaxial compression test data on Fontainebleau sand. Then, the DEM modelling of pile driving demonstrates quantitative agreement with the experimental counterpart in terms of cone resistance, stress contours, and distributions.

Abstract:Establishing the stress conditions developed around displacement piles in sands is crucial to improving the understanding and modeling of their behavior. High-quality experiments and theoretical analyses are providing new insights into the effects of penetration on stress conditions. This paper synthesizes the findings from three independent experimental studies on normally consolidated silica sands and a trio of numerical analyses that tackle the problem from different perspectives. The significant degrees of uncertainty in the measurements and predictions are recognized and significant differences between data sets are discussed and largely resolved. Applying a consistent normalized interpretive framework leads to clear common trends regarding how installation affects the stress regime. While the main emphasis is placed on the radial effective stresses developed around pile shafts, the circumferential and vertical stress states are also considered.

Abstract:Displacement piles are driven to support a wide range of structures. However, analysis of the stress and strain fields developed during their installation remains one of the most challenging problems in geotechnical engineering. Advances in design methods, particularly for sand sites, have had to rely on an imperfect analogy between pile and cone penetration test (CPT), rather than modeling pile installation itself. Recent physical model experiments have provided benchmark data sets that describe the stress and deformation patterns developed around displacement piles penetrating sand masses. Following from large-deformation finite-element analyses that captured the stresses measured in the Grenoble 3S-R calibration chamber NE34 sand experiments, this paper presents simulations of the displacements measured in equivalent high-quality experiments conducted at Purdue University with dense, angular #2Q-ROK silica sand. A modified Mohr-Coulomb model with state-dependent parameters was calibrated to match element tests conducted by the authors, and an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian scheme was applied in the simulations. The evolution and distribution of the deformations induced by pile penetration are compared with the experiments. Predictions for the deformation and strain fields applying during and after pile installation are presented, showing broad agreement between the simulations and experiments. The predicted and measured pile capacities are also compared and contrasted. Points of divergence between the simulations and tests are highlighted and their implications for numerical modeling are discussed.

Abstract:This letter extends an earlier theoretical and numerical analysis that aimed to improve predictions for the large-displacement end-bearing capacity of piles in sand by considering the boundary conditions applying to steady penetration and the effects of grain crushing via breakage mechanics. The earlier work led to good agreement with the end-bearing capacities, soil displacements and evolution of grain size distributions observed in experiments of penetrating model piles. The purpose of the current paper is to complement the previous evaluation through comparisons with more recently published calibration chamber measurements of the stresses surrounding instrumented model piles penetrating into dense silica sand. Encouraging agreement is demonstrated for the radial, circumferential and vertical stress components. Scope for further improvements is also identified.

Abstract:The challenges of predicting the stresses acting around piles driven in sand limits meaningful analysis of their single and group loading responses, aging processes and scale/in-situ stress level dependency. Benchmark local stresses measurements made in the sand mass and pile shaft in Calibration Chamber (CC) models show that sharply different regimes act when the pile is either penetrating or temporarily stationary. This paper presents an Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite element simulation of installation into dense sand, highlighting the stress changes developed between intermittent penetration stages and exploring the effects of initial stress level. The installation by cyclic jacking of closed-ended model piles studied in a highly-instrumented CC experiments is simulated with a state-dependent Mohr–Coulomb model calibrated to high-quality element tests on the sand employed. The predicted pile head loads and local stresses are compared with the CC experiments, showing generally good agreement over the lower parts of the pile shaft while also matching key field-scale trends from CPT-based practical design approaches. More advanced constitutive modeling appears necessary to eliminate discrepancies noted over the higher shaft levels, which may be linked to currently neglected aspects of the sands’ highly non-linear behavior, including grain crushing and hysteresis under cyclic loading.

Abstract:Displacement piles are driven to support a wide range of structures. Predicting their axial limiting capacities and load-displacement behavior is critical to many such engineering applications. Although field load tests may be conducted to check design assumptions, such tests can prove expensive and difficult to generalize. Numerical analyses undertaken to support design face uncertainty over the potentially important effects of pile installation because no well-developed method exists to predict the stresses applying during and after driving. Recent experiments have provided evidence regarding the stresses and strains developed around displacement piles during installation in sand that can help guide representative numerical modeling. This paper contributes to this development by reporting large displacement numerical analyses and linking these to high-quality experiments. The arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) options available in ABAQUS 2016/Explicit have been employed to simulate highly instrumented calibration chamber tests made with closed-ended piles penetrated into sand. Predictions for the stress components developed during and after pile installation are presented, along with measurements made by other authors of the corresponding strain fields. The simulations' broad agreement with the available experimental evidence indicates that the adopted ALE technique and soil modeling approach are appropriate for pile installation analysis in sands.

This paper considers these particulate processes, reporting experiments with model displacement piles installed in uniform pressurised sand and parallel interface ring shear tests. Abstract:It is known that plugging behaviour plays a significant role in affecting the bearing capacity of open-ended piles driven in sands. However, numerical analyses of pile plugging presents multiple challenges. To better understand plugging development during open-ended pile installation, three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) simulations have been undertaken of small model piles' penetration in virtual calibration chamber tests. The analyses employed the open-source MUSEN framework and took advantages of graphics processing unit (GPU) acceleration, particle refinement and axisymmetric modelling. The simulation was able to reproduce pile plugging behaviour in sands ranging from fully coring to fully plugged states. The contributions to pile capacity of internal and external shaft friction are correlated with plug indices including incremental filling ratio (IFR) and plug length ratio (PLR). The new, purely theoretical, analyses show shaft resistances that agree well with estimates made from well-known CPT-based offshore design methods. The poorer agreement found for base resistances also identified ways in which the new DEM analyses may be improved.

Abstract:The material point method (MPM), which is known to be advantageous in modeling large deformation and contact problems, is utilized in this study to simulate displacement pile installation in sand. A modified Bardenhagen’s contact algorithm is proposed that calculates the node-to-surface distances between the deformable soil mass and the rigid pile surface more effectively, along with a smoothing factor for the change of momenta between the contacting bodies. The modified algorithm is shown to produce more accurate and stable contact results. Three tests, namely, the rolling cylinder, the penetrating wedge, and the strip footing, are first conducted to demonstrate the validity of the modified algorithm. It is then applied to analyze the installation of a closed-ended pile, employing a state-dependent Mohr–Coulomb model to capture the sand’s state-dependent shearing behavior. Detailed analyses of the stress and deformation fields developed around the pile during steady penetration reveal quantitative agreement between the MPM predictions and published experiments, indicating that the approach holds promise for use in more sophisticated analyses designed to improve the understanding of industrially driven piles.

Abstract:A series of small-scale 1 g model tests were conducted using a self-designed pile driving loading model test system to investigate the effect of relative density and cross-section geometry on the development of soil stress around the pile during the penetration of X-section Cast-in-place Concrete (XCC) pile in sand. It is found that the variations of the radial stress Δ σ' r / σ' v0 in the surrounding soil presented a significant “ h / R effect” during the penetration of the XCC pile, indicating that the “ h / R effect”, which was found for circular pile during the penetration of piles, was also observed for the XCC pile. The radial stress distribution along the axial direction of the pile could be divided into three zones, i.e., the pile body region, the pile tip region, and the soil region below the pile tip. The development trend of the radial stress along with soil depth is different in each region. Additionally, the peaks of the radial stresses in the pile tip region were very sensitive to the variations of the relative density of the surrounding soils and the cross-section geometry of the piles, which increased significantly with increasing the relative density and cross-section geometry. The radial stresses Δ σ' r / σ' v0 decreased exponentially as the radial distance r/R increased. The decay rates decreased with increasing the relative densities of the surrounding soils, while increased with decreasing the cross-section geometry parameter of the piles.

Abstract:The existing database of the loading response of offshore pile foundations needs to be enriched, so that safety and economic considerations can be optimally balanced in design. This paper details a programme of field tests on an open-ended steel pile. The pile with a diameter of 2 m was driven to a depth of 72.8 m in a stratified soil site and then subjected to monotonic compressive, tensile and lateral loadings. Resting periods were allowed before each test to enable strength recovery, and a period of about one month was found to be sufficient (i.e., the axial bearing capacity increases from about 10 MN to 25 MN). The test results were interpreted in terms of the internal forces and displacements/deformations of the pile, and the more detailed pile-soil interactions (i.e., q(s)-s and p-y curves). It is found that, for cohesive soils, the unit shaft resistance q(s) remains constant through each soil layer regardless of the almost linearly varying undrained shear strength s(u) obtained from CPTu tests, and the soil layer with overall higher s(u) does not guarantee greater q(s) owing to different proportions of silty and clayey components. Upon reaching the ultimate uplift load, the shaft resistance within the cohesive soils shows a clear softening response. Extensive comparisons were made between these results and the predictions from existing design methods wherever applicable to discuss the accuracy of each.

Abstract:Results from experimental testing of four approximately one-third scale laterally loaded H-piles, subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading are presented. The test setups were designed to prevent torsion in the pile during testing and to eliminate the self-weight of the hydraulic actuator that could otherwise induce moment on the model piles. The tests were conducted in compacted medium dense sand and all the piles were extensively instrumented. Test results indicate that the lateral force–displacement responses under cyclic loading exhibited slight pinching behavior due to the gap that opened at the top of the soil-pile interface. Numerical simulations show that p–y curves based on the American Petroleum Institute (API) recommendations and that proposed by Reese et al. can reasonably predict the lateral response of the piles though slightly underestimate the ultimate capacities. The general pile behavior such as force–displacement response and moment distributions along the pile depth show slight sensitivity to the subgrade reaction modulus at large displacements.

Abstract:Under conditions of seismic action or any other mutation stresses, the soil of the liquefiable foundation can lose its strength and stiffness rapidly due to the liquefication, resulting in the loss of the bearing capacity. The traditional anti-liquefaction measures mainly focus on the ground treatment, while the open-hole pipe pile provided in this paper has both anti-liquefaction and bearing capacity. Firstly, the liquid flow in the holes of the pipe pile is assumed to meet the Poiseuille equation, and the equal strain assumption is applied. Then we derive the analytic solution of the pore pressure considering both radial and vertical flows under the time-varying load, combined with the stress concentration phenomenon of the pipe pile composite foundation. Furthermore, considering the pore pressure accumulation under cyclic loading, the analytical solution is improved by using the empirical model of pore pressure development. Based on the analytical solution, this paper analyzes and compares the development of pore pressure of the open-hole pipe piles, gravel piles, undrained piles and natural foundation. Thus, the results indicate that the open-hole pipe pile has the best drainage capacity. The factors such as the modulus ratio of pile and soil and the radius ratio have important influence on the development of pore pressure. The higher the modulus ratio of pile and soil is, the smaller the radius ratio is, and the faster the pore pressure dissipation rate is. The influence of open-hole coefficient on the development of pore pressure is not obvious. The load frequency only affects the peak value of initial pore pressure and has little influence on the rate of pore pressure oscillation attenuation.

Abstract:The complete process of successive penetration of single jacked pile is simulated with finite element method based on the commonly used large-scale software ANSYS; and compacting displacements are analyzed in detail. The displacement fields caused by different modulus ratios of pile to soil, frictions between pile and soil and Poisson's ratios of soil are given. Some complex problems, such as elastoplastic constitutive law, stress field of soil's dead weight, large deformation and sliding friction between pile and soil, are taken into account by using the displacement penetration method which is more reality and has the effect of animated simulation.

Abstract:This paper involves a destructive full-scale load test on long bored pile instrumented with strain gauges along the shaft. The load-displacement response, the distribution of axial force, and the thresholds of displacement for fully mobilizing the skin resistances in different soils in tension case were discussed in this paper. The field test results show that the measured tip resistance in the pile under tension is near zero during the whole loading, and the softening is accompanied with a reduction in skin friction when the skin friction is fully developed. It also can be investigated that the threshold of displacement for fully mobilizing skin friction is different even if in the same soil type due to different soil stress states. Generally speaking, the thresholds of relative pile-soil displacement for fully mobilizing skin frictions in the sandy silt, silty sand mixed silt, silty clay, silty clay mixed sand and gravel are about 4 mm, 11 mm, 7 mm, 6 mm, and 5.5 mm, respectively.

Abstract:This study investigates the displacement-dependent lateral earth pressure of sandy soil in active state. 3D DEM numerical simulations of plane strain unloading test (unloading in the minor principal stress direction) are carried out firstly to acquire the hyperbolic stress–strain relationship of sandy soil. The initial modulus of sandy soil is observed to increase with the increasing of major principal stress, initial lateral earth pressure coefficient and relative density, while the failure ratio is little influenced by these factors. A simplified hyperbolic model calibrated by the DEM results are then developed to calculate the displacement-dependent active lateral earth pressure of sandy soil. It was found that the hyperbolic model can well predict the variation of lateral earth pressure distribution at intermediate active state of T- (Translation) and RB- (Rotate about the base) mode of retaining structure movement. But it can hardly capture the lateral earth pressure distribution on retaining structure under RT- (Rotate about the top) mode due to significant rotation of principal stress direction. According to the theoretical analysis, the required retaining structure displacement leading to the limiting active state is varied along the retaining structure, and it also dependents on the initial stress state as well as the relative density.
STUDY OF COMPACTING SOIL DISPLACEMENTS AROUND JACKED SINGLE PILE BASED ON EXCESS PORE PRESSURE DISSIPATION

Abstract:Compacting soil displacements vary with the dissipation of excess pore water pressure produced by the installed pile，and this problem is still not well resolved because of the piling process complexity. According to strain path method and source-sink method，the closed-form analytical expressions of displacement fields caused by the installation of jacked pile due to the dissipation of excess pore water pressure were obtained in small strain condition. The solution taking into consideration stress-free ground surface and dissipation of excess pore water pressure was in accordance with the practical engineering，and the solution could provide the whole-depth compacting soil displacements. Based on soil deformation characteristics near the installed pile，the integrate expressions of compacting soil displacements in large strain condition were also deduced，and the differences of compacting soil displacements in small and large strain conditions were analyzed. The influences of excess pore water pressure dissipation on compacting soil displacements were analyzed by use of the theoretical solution and the analytical results of compacting soil displacement were compared with field tests. The results show that the horizontal and vertical compaction soil displacements of the installed pile reduce with the dissipation of excess pore water pressure. Theoretical solution variation trends of compacting soil displacements based on the dissipation of excess pore water pressure were in accord with measured results，and the calculating values of soil displacements were agree well with experimental results.

Abstract:Driven piles are used widely both offshore and onshore. However, accurate axial capacity and load-displacement prediction is difficult at sand-dominated sites, and offshore practice is moving towards cone penetration test (CPT) based design methods developed from instrumented pile research and database studies. However, onshore use of these methods remains limited; there is a paucity of high quality case histories to assess their potential benefits clearly, and application in layered profiles may be uncertain. This paper presents new tests on prestressed concrete (PHC) pipe piles driven in sands for a major new Yangtze River bridge project in China, assessing the performance of the 'new CPT' and conventional capacity approaches, considering the influence of weak sublayers on base resistance and noting the marked changes in shaft capacity that apply over time.
